This is fucking amazing. I've been in design/illustration for 7 years and I've never seen the golden ratio taught in such an engaging and informative way. I'm gonna buy a set!
I remember watching Kim Possible when I was a child and try to replicate that drawing style, more than 10 years later I'm learning it from the man Himself. Your work is one of the reasons I kept drawing. Love your videos thank for sharing your knowledge!
Can't agree more. This man is my all time favorite artist. I have always dreamed of reaching his levels of talent. Wish I could meet and just draw with 'em for one day.
I'm very glad to find this video. i have been struggling and questioning this golden ratio in term for artwork use, but you explain it in a way that i can really understand, now my life has meaning again *cries in spanish
I just went over to your website and purchased one of these from you. I am stoked! I have wanted one of these for a long time and haven't been able to find the right one for me. This is it! I can't think of a better artist I can support in the process. I loved Kim Possible when my kids were growing up! One of my fav cartoons and still is! Thanks for all you do and share Stephen, I really appreciate it! Gonna check out your campaign for your book as well. Really cool stuff, TFS!! Big Hugs!! Reeah.
I use to do the Golden spiral as a kid in all my notebooks , I guess I could sense it since small ,we are all intertwined and we r all part of An amazing plan made by the Creator. He's fingerprint is in all His creation.
Thanks for making this video! when ever stuff like this was mentioned in my art textbooks it was totally over my head. but this is a very practical was to use it and use it effectively! Ive always struggled to fine just the right proportions. I feel like I'm just shooting in the dark until something just looks good on paper. I'm excited to try this out!
I know this is an oldie, but I just got acquainted with your channel via Will Terry’s. This tool is to die for. I bought one for me and one for one of my best students in class. Thanks for this incredible opportunity to learn more every single day. Best wishes, Ligia.
Thank you so much, Stephen!! This is absolutely awesome and blowed my mind! Studying art we always see the golden section being used in compositions, architecture (as you said), etc. However, I never thought this "obviously" could be used in character design! Thanks for this lesson!
NICE! First time seeing that tool. Thank you Stephen Silver. love that realization at the end that the heads were cut off too; I would've acted the same way. Now I'm itching to try this XD
Stephen.... this has just....FILLED ME WITH DETERMINATION !!!! Great vid, i was currently reading a book on the whole theory but it was waaaay to technical for my brain to wrap around for an artistic purpose - This video was the piece needed to make it all clearer and im definitely saving some cash to order the tool a.s.a.p (one less subway, more art fuel.) Thanks alot !
I like the fact that this is an amazing piece of kit when it comes to getting your proportions right on the mark, 'ESPECIALLY PORTRAITS', just to name a few! But contemporary Art and Abstract, Cubism etc...don't exactly require this instrument, although, IT'S A VERY GOOD TOOL TO HAVE IN YOUR OWN TOOLBOX! I'LL be getting me one or making one or something similar, ie; A Compass altered a bit etc...☺ AWSOME video
I just got my Golden Section calipers.I paint traditional Northern New Mexico style retablos and this is just great. This is just what I needed. Thanks! Fast delivery too.
Kim Possible is the achievement of a lifetime. The best combination of a "modern" look and excellent animation. Some of Kim's extreme poses are just unbeatable in appeal and appropriateness for the character.
I just got my golden ratio calipers and I'm super excited! I have been obsessed with fractals and fibonacci for some time, and have been consistently looking for ways to apply the concepts I learn. Into things I do, and that's how I came across your videos (which are all excellent). Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for this awesome tool!
I have to say you greatly influenced me in my drawing and cartooning style: all I can say is thank you. Thank you for inspiring me to draw and planting the seed for the drive to get better, I cannot express how grateful I am for that.
Ah yes! The ol fibbinaci! Excellent video, thank you for taking the time to demonstrate this and the ending made me laugh HARD. gasp* "nooo...NOOOO!" lol THanks again. ;)
Great information Stephen. It appears at the end that he gasps because he realized he might have filmed this with the majority of it cut off. It still made more than the point though Stephen thanks for the info.
Very informative and interesting video. Totally gobsmacked me when I saw how it worked on bugs and then cartoons. Pretty amazing. I ordered the calipers that day. Any info on how long it'll take to receive it or if any tracking number will be sent out? I especially like how you stressed this is a drawing *aid* and not something to conform to always. Next time, though, try not to lose your head(s) over the recoding. :P
Wouldn't you know it, got mine yesterday. So never mind the original question. Just to "test drive" it, I picked a cartoon book at random, it was the hardcover of "Draw the Looney Tunes". Picked a random page, it was pg 77 -- a drawing of ol' Bugs. And the darn golden section held true. Head and Torso, Eyes and bottom of head (chin). Even the legs and the waist. A. Maze. Ing! Can't wait to test out my original characters with this device. Thank you, Stephen Silver, for this!
Stephen Silver loved your explanation on these great artists. Fantastic layout. I have been looking at this and fractals for a couple years now. What do you know on the fractals in relationship with the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence? I first ran into the Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio when teaching martial arts concerning the art of iado which is sword draws used by the Samuri. I stumbled on it because our oldest sword work founded by musashi is very circular and the movement of the blade leaves the scabbard in a circular way like a nautilus shell shape. I then began to notice how much of the art depicting Samurai had nautilus shells or waves (both with the golden ratio/Fibonacci sequence as their basis. I found that teaching my students this technique greatly accelerate their ability to gain Jules of energy at the forward 1/3 of the blade where the cutting mostly takes place. Have you looked into any Japanese artwork with these symbols in it? Thanks.
Does the golden ratio apply to perspective as well? For example if you draw an 1-point perspective picture of a road that goes towards the horizon with fences along the sides, would the distance between the fence posts be that of the golden ratio?
"Eveness is the killer of a good design" I heard Aaron Blaise say that many times, but I never fully understood it until now. Or according to what do you exaggerate cretin areas.
If I were to simply take a screenshot of these things and scale and rotate it around in photoshop would that work for digital, or is there more to it than that? I don't want to have to pay for software to do that.
Hey Stephen, have you happened upon Myron Barnstone's classes? He went into depth about the Golden Section. I studied with him back in 2010... and he also used calipers extensively.
Stephen, great tutorial, love your accent (Irish-Bostonia?). I neeeed those calipers. I made my own from cardstock, but it's not the same. I went to the wix.com page you have but it says not taking payments at the moment. Please help. You are incredibly talented, btw
facts... he sold the shit out these calipers lol I would have bought them for $10 just to use because i'm new in drawing... but i'm watching the video now in fascination lol
@@StephenSilver ok. It confuses me because just hearing the way it works goes off the top of my head but seeing you do it seems like the basically the golden ratio

it all depends on your intention of the image, but it works on teeth so it can work on fences

The Golden Ratio is found in a host of medieval Cathedrals throughout Europe.

only really for one size. The proportions will get to big when you scale.

You Know!!!?
which place? Which building? are golden ratio point In the world map.
I have a doubt, when I draw the eyes and the nose and even the mouth of cartoon, how can I use this rule? The drawing broken.
Hey Stephen, do you sign all of the golden sections you sell? Or only the ones that people ask to be signed?
