      I know for Gold K it's two feet (according to Mark Waid's Super-Quiz, hosted on this very site). Obviously Green has a much wider radius of effect; I seem to recall Luthor mentioning 10 meters in the Action Comics Annual #10? Even if it wasn't that, I'm sure he noted an exact distance.
      Edit: I looked the page up, Luthor said 10 feet, not 10 meters. Regardless, that's an official number, at least for the nebulous (in regards to Superman continuity prior to Secret Origins) and relatively brief post-Infinite Crisis pre-New 52 period. The number may have been different for other versions.

      It's a pointless "weakness" anyway. In the majority of cases it just makes him "weak," and yet somehow villains are never able to kill him while he is under the effect. In many cases Superman still takes a punch from a giant monster or Zod or something, which would liquefy a normal human, and he survives. Superman has ALWAYS been the original "Mary Sue." 🙄

    1:46 for those curious: Lead is one of the very few materials that is able to shield whatever is behind it from gamma rays. If a solar flare were to happen, you can put your electronic devices in a lead container, and you'd be guaranteed to save them.

    • @alexbaker1569
      @alexbaker1569 22 дня назад +66

      That's not true, lead has a high molecular density due to its high number on the periodic table, this means It's more effective at blocking radiation than less dense elements, because the gamma rays are more likely to collide with a nucleus and be absorbed by them
      However, it dosent actually stop gamma radiation, just causes its intensity to decrease quicker than other materials, a thin sheet of lead is going to struggle to sheild against gamma radiation, because the light isn't spending much time in the material, so dosent have many opportunities to be stopped
      Large volumes of basically anything can act as radiation shielding, that's why water and concrete are often used, they're not as effective as lead per cm of shielding distance, but they're cheap and easy to make very thick
      TLDR: lead is good yes, but it isn't a guarantee, anything can sheild against gamma rays, lead is just more effective for the same thickness, and is just as useless when too thin

    • @alexbaker1569
      @alexbaker1569 22 дня назад +13

      With the solar flare example, the atmosphere is doing most of the work blocking any radiation, because even though its not that dense, it's 100km thick, so blocks most cosmic rays (that's part of the reason the ozone layer was so important)

    • @alexbaker1569
      @alexbaker1569 22 дня назад +11

      Other thing, earth's magnetic field is also a big factor, but that's different so I didn't mention it, it's worth nothing one of the main reasons mars is so uninhabitable is because its lack of magnetic field and low atmospheric density causes the surface to be constantly bathed in radiation

    Laser eyes is actually about the worst way to deal with kryptonite since it's actually more deadly to him when it's vaporized. But in the spirit of things.
    1) Claks alternate vision modes aren't constant they're like a voluntary muscle so batman can sneak attack him so long as he can get past his hearing, which he previously has so yeah that would work.
    2) Superman has multiple psychological weaknesses that can be exploited and are frequently.
    3) Various types of solar radiation can drain Superman of his powers. So lock him in a room with red dwarf radiation.
    4) Although green Kryptonite is the most common other types of Kryptonite have more subtle effects and he dosen't always notice until it's to late.
    5) Vaious types of drugs and toxins have been known to work on him so poison his water facet.
    6) He is as powerful as the plot demands so try to bribe the author.

      Yeah, that actually sounds how it would go. Batfans want to believe Batman solos the entire Justice League through prep, but really, without plot armor and artificially-induced stupidity of the characters, Batman could only ever outwit and delay them through massive investment and sacrifice, but fighting and winning a 1v1 battle with any of them is simply impossible, much less him casually soloing everyone.

      @JacksonFactotum-rw2gs Batman could beat most JL member because his definition of "win" isn't "I won the fight" it's "I achieved the objective" and these are two different things. For example in Hush Batman won because his objective was to return Clark to normal Superman lost because he got mind controlled and Ivy lost because Batman won. In Dark Kinght Returns it's very obvious that Superman could kill him in a fair fight but Batman wins, he wins because his objective isn't "curb stomp Superman" it's "Keep Clark out of my way in the future." And Batman did not play remotely fair in that fight, he had Oliver a decade of prep time, Bane's Venom, a power suit and he waited until he knew Clark was injured. He had to sacrifice a lot to, literal billons of dollars, the manor, he has a heart attack at the end of the fight and Alfred dies but he won.
      So bare in mind in the reason Batman "wins" is because winning for him looks different than anyone else winning.

Yet, he has been taken down with bullets many times; same applies for Superman, he's not THAT fast, but he's still much faster than light, no bullet or arrow should ever be able to catch him offguard in any possible scenario.

    These are Superman's weaknesses according to the comics and official DC data books:
    *Vulnerability to Kryptonite*
    Since the destruction of Krypton, its remains (rendered radioactive by the explosion) have been spreading throughout the universe as Kryptonite, a crystalline substance whose specific radioactive wavelength is lethal to Kryptonians native to this reality. The most common form of Kryptonite is Green Kryptonite, and its effect is directly poisonous to him. Kryptonite from other realities do not necessarily have the same effects on all Kryptonians.
    *Vulnerability to Magic*
    Superman's biomatrix is his most powerful asset, but the strength of this field is also its greatest weakness. Its permeability to certain wavelengths makes him vulnerable to certain radiations, particularly magical energies whose chaotic electromagnetic or extra dimensional signatures disrupt this force field. Superman's vulnerability to magic varies depending upon the special effects of the magic. He can be injured and worn down by magical entities. Magic can have powerful and unpredictable effects on Superman and his magical enemies have often proven to be the most dangerous.
    *The Black Tide*
    If Superman's chi flow is disrupted by being overwhelmed by this disturbed substance, he'll suffer from fatigue and pain; until he sub comes to unconsciousness. Eventually he will die, unless acupuncture is administered in time.
    *Lead*
    Superman cannot see through lead with his x-ray vision powers.
    *Solar Energy Dependency*
    His abilities will eventually weaken without replenishing his energy reserves with normal (yellow) sun radiation, especially if he doesn't have any direct contact with yellow sunlight. When exposed to the same red solar radiation as Krypton's red sun Rao, it causes Superman to lose his powers within a large amount of exposure until the exposure to yellow sunlight will reverse this effect.
    *High-Pitched Noises*
    Because of his super hearing, Superman's ears are extra-sensitive to extreme noises. This gives individuals like Black Canary and Silver Banshee who use sonic screeches, a particular advantage in combat against him.
    *Psionics*

    When I was a kid, I found and read an old comic where it gave Luther's backstory. A small meteorite made of kryptonite landed on Earth and Superman got weakened by it. (I think he went up to it to move it or something, I don't recall). Luther saw him and was like, "Oh no, Superman! I'll help!"
    he pushed the meteorite into a lake with a bulldozer and superman flew off, but then all of his hair fell out from the kryptonite. He blamed Superman and that's why he's Superman's arch-nemisis.
    Lex Luther hates Superman because he "made" him bald. And this is the only backstory for Lex that I accept.

      After discovering that Superboy was weak to kryptonite, Lex starts to work on a substance to remove said weakness, but ends up causing a fire, with Lex in danger of dying due to the toxic fumes.
      Superboy sees this and uses his superbreath to remove the fumes, but Lex got bald out of his incident. He throws away the cure and declares himself his arch-enemy. Because he got bald out of something he himself caused.

Superman did trick a Kryptonian villain into recreating the same chemical reaction which forms kryptonite (and thus incapacitating himself with the small amount of kryptonite made).

Radiation can definitely affect him in potent enough levels, but you don't even need to go that far, synthetic kryptonite or just copying the frequency of kryptonite should theoretically be enough since all radiation is just energy that moves in a specific wave frequently. Despite the whole kryptonite rarity thing, it should be pretty easy to replicate it in its most basic form.
