Every day I wake up early, work out, and read for at least one hour. I do this because there are studies that show that after physical exercise our brain is more active and absorbs information better.
Reading every day is huge for me. For some reason, if I break the habit even once, it's so hard to get back in the swing. The brain does a weird thing where it forgets how enjoyable reading is. Almost PTSD from the forced reading in school growing up.
I can’t imagine a life without reading every day! And your books have been a great discovery for me this year! I stumbled upon your videos on stoicism earlier this year and have binge watched ever since. Got all your books since and have learnt so much! Thanks and happy greetings to you Ryan from Perth, Australia!
I hadn't read any books in years. Then something difficult happened in my life and luckily I found Stoicism. From that point on I made it a habit to read. Got so much out of it.
I do devotions in the morning. The rest of the day I read when time allows. I keep two books going that I bounce between. One being on my iPhone because it’s always on me. At the start of each year I set a reading goals of how many books and subjects.
Listen to you, i feel like my friends feel when I try to explain all this stuff. I can't believe than u are here, i just bought your book the obstacle it's the way some days ago!
Thank you Ryan for all the books you've released so far. After "The Daily Stoic" and "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius I went ahead and bought all the other books you released so far (and recommended at the end of "The Obstacle is the Way) and nearly finished all of them in less than a month. The amount of notes and marks which have been put in them so far have been a tremendous help in steering me into the right direction in life. Keep up the wonderfull and inspiring work ! Greetings from Belgium !
I'm doing the best I can. I'm a grad student in Mathematics so that is what I'm mostly reading, but also working on Essays in Idleness and have the Loeb edition of Meditations on the way.
Making a STRONG DECISION to read every day for at least 30 minutes has been a game changer for me. Every aspect of my life is getting better every day. Applying the knowledge in books is a MUST if you wanna have results. Especially because so few people read regularly. It's a competitive advantage for me. I'm not extra smart but reading daily gives me superpowers over others :)
I finished 26 books this year so far. 20 of them were non-fictions. But I’m thinking of reading less next year. I want to try spending more time thinking and reflecting(thus slower speed) while reading a good book, which are themselves thought-provoking.
Hooray - today I found Meditations in a bookstore in Melbourne, Australia, AND it’s the Gregory Hays translation. I’ll be launching into it this evening.. Thanks Ryan.
Your videos on reading are my favorite to watch and rewatch. Reading is such a gift, it’s easy to slack and take it for granted. Thank you so much for your work and inspiration.
Definitely reading after an evening shift winds me down for the day ,as opposed to tv ,and earlier rise ,so I can get time in bed to chill and read ,since I started non vocalisation my reading has sky rocketed, and so has the fun
❤️ Daily Stoic. It was one of the first 2 Daily reading books that I started reading along with “Daily Drucker” almost everyday since 2015/ 2016 give or take. Now I have approx. 20 daily books I spend hour+ reading. A few months ago I got a copy of Leo Tolstoy’s Calendar of Wisdom & “Wise Thoughts for Everyday”(like this book better since it’s not as religious as the other one) My new favorite is Ian Tuhovsky,s 365 effective communications (2021) -it really had enhance my communications for the last several months. And one daily book I will likely continue to read for life is Krishnamurti’s “The Book of Life” Since 2015, it was Tim Ferriss TOT & TOM that influence me to reading all these other books over the years. I hope Ferriss will also publish his “daily reading” book soon! Look forward to seeing other people’s recommended list of “daily reading” books.
3 books and one meditation book every day. In the morning I listen to audible with a cup of coffee, reading a book efter lunch, reading a book before bed. And in the middle of the day I read a page of meditation book
I always think it is about prioritizing. And when and how to Prioritize reading. Don’t find time if you don’t have it. Replace a existing, maybe waistefull activity. I replaced reading comics with books. Also Don’t force read books if you don’t want to. You are not gonna be motivated to read if you don’t like the book. Find books you want to read. That will make you prioritize to read since reading is more fun. And if you have to read books you don’t like. Read in small increments. Reading 15min in the morning, 15min while having lunch and 15min in the afternoon. Same with books you want to read, but are difficult to read. Increments. A small step is still better than standing still.
Hey Ryan can u make a video on. How to choose a book, how to stick with the content of a book. I started reading books and what I find difficult is to stick with book, when ever I find the content boring I keep procrastinating. We all have a taste to a particular kind of book or particular content.. if someone is interested in knowing about the world around you and is interested in reading and knowing all those but finding it difficult to get the correct book.. how do I handle such issues. Can u please make a video on this topic
Not sure if this will be of any use to you, but the late Christopher Hitchens in a discussion once said that he learned to cut his losses. If a book was boring and not engaging him, he would abandon it and find another to read instead. You may find over time as you read more, that your tastes will change and that things you once found boring or tedious, you start to find interesting. I never had an interest in nonfiction books... Now they are the majority of what I read, because the content I am searching for has changed over time
@ryanholiday. I tried ordering all six of your books on stoicism being I want too support you and buy directly from you so you can keep doing the great work you do, but I had too buy them from amizon being it wouldn’t ship too Canada. Take care Ryan
Years ago I was at a local watering hole, eating dinner, and reading a book. In walks a friend and calmly informs me that "A man who reads while eating enjoys neither." I may have botched it a bit but it's close enough. Slow down, take a minute and eat. I miss you JJ!

I'm trying to remember the value of incremental progress. Even if I can only read a small section of some great writer every day, it should build up if I can just keep at it.
I’ve been a binge reader since I was in elementary. I really like the idea of dedicating weeks to binge. Finding balance as a dad of young kids isn’t ultra easy.
Hello! I'm looking for some book recommendations as I am inclined to study group dynamics, pandemic and mental health preferably from the stoic or psychoanalytic lens. Due to lack of quality supervision in education, I often come here.
I'd agree with almost everything. I'd add, always make sure that you read slightly more fiction than non-fiction.... unless you want reality to swallow you up alive.
I am preparing for engineering entrance exam and this year is very important for my studies. And spending 10-20 hrs is little bit difficult. But I had a lot of interest in stoic philosophy. Should I spend some time on books on stoicism or it will not worth it ? I am preparing for JEE exam and am already studing for 9 to 11 hours Please suggest me how to start stoicism and with which book
I am sooo slow at reading. It takes ages for me to read a book. I feel really stupid when people talk about reading loads of books a week.. it takes me weeks to read just one. 😢
I find I'm at my most stoic after a bit of vodka. I read only the 1st sentence of each paragraph. Reading one page at a time alternating between 2 or more books. Current books...Essential manners for men and Class, A guide through the American status system.
Can anyone suggest me a version of Seneca’s letters? (I have pdf copies which I downloaded from Tim Ferriss’ blog. I read one latter a day, but to reduce the screen time, I want hardcopies. But the problem I’m facing is that I’m not getting the translated versions by Gummore and penguin classics has some letters missing) PS: I’m from India and my to-go site to purchase books is through Amazon

Unrelated question: Why are there no bottle caps in what is clearly a bottle cap map of Texas behind you? I know many Texas microbreweries have switched to canning for environmental reasons, but many still bottle and have specialized caps. I'd be happy to provide a list.
This is like the 20th time I’ve watched the same video. I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard “common place book”. I still like these videos but…how about some new, like new-new, fresh, novel? Maybe it’s pushing me to “be the change” and make a video about my note taking process…need a decent camera.
My roundtrip commute is a bit shy of 3 hours per day... Audiobooks have both saved my sanity and enabled me to "read" several dozen books per year that i never would have otherwise. Actually, that's how I read The Obstacle Is The Way.... Probably never would have opened the physical book... Instead, now I have Meditations at my bedside to better effect.
I can't really read. I'm literate; but my mind wanders when I try to read. It doesn't matter actually , it's just information , of course reading something you can install more data in your brain in a shorter Amount of time , but it doesn't matter at the end of the day
Read Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy by Andy Ngo. It's very informative and goes back to the history of Antifa in Europe. It's well written too.

Same here. Also the same issue if I stop writing in my diary even for a day which turns into a week or more.
Same here.
