  • Melbourne Cup Day 2024 yielded the best conditions of the week with high temps and light winds. The public holiday saw many pilots converging on Greater Missenden, mostly hiking to launch. Raphael Mayer took the day by flying down wind toward Yarra Glen while Olly Wagner and I took the leisurely option of landing at the footy oval in Yea. The Aussie paragliding season is beginning!

Thanks for sharing, any tips for navigating past the wind farm?

It's only my first time flying past there so it's hard to know for sure what's best. I'd say take whatever lift you can find to stay as high as possible. Raphael and I both got over 1500m from climbs off the NW corner of the farm so investigate any wiff of thermals you encounter in that area. Then we both got good climbs in the hills to the East, which required pushing cross wind from the farm, but if you go downwind you'll end up over the river which I would expect to be very sinky. The hills East of wind farm are where I got to over 1800 which was very high for the day so it seems those hills generate good thermals. Olly's tracklog isn't on xcontest but he flew a pretty straight line SW from the wind farm to Yea and said that any little hill in the flatter areas worked well, so that is another option.
