    Great video man, I will definitely be using this in the classroom with my students.
    And thank you for pointing out the fact that ‘jumping’ in launch is one of the worst things you can do on any site, especially coastal, I’ve seen so many people end up flying backwards straight into rotor!..
    I teach my students just to simply run and keep running until you’re up and flying
    Thanks for sharing

    1) Don't suntan your wing while waiting, unnecessary UV degradation
    2) A helmet cam is a hook for your lines and a future epic crash. Get rid of any helmet cam

    Hey Acro, very helpful video!
    I have a short question: if the Wind is so strong that you cant get to the ground and you flying backwards. What options do I have?

    • @acroal
      @acroal  3 года назад +3

      If you have a speedbar and the air isn't too turbulent, then using that is a good way to push forward.
      If you don't then your options are pretty limited. You would have to assess the ground behind you to find a suitable place to land which will probably in rotor turbulence.
      Avoiding this situation is incredibly important so hopefully some of the tips in this video will help you never have to come close!

    One 'rule of thumb' I've heard at our local coastal site... If the whitecaps begin to persist for a solid "one-thousand-and-one" count, it's time to pack it in.

    • @acroal
      @acroal  5 лет назад

      That's a sound piece of advice for sure!

  • @mickbrett1608
    @mickbrett1608 5 лет назад +1

    Great clip thanks for posting.. Do you use a rule of thumb for where the rotor zone starts for
    a given windspeed ?

    • @acroal
      @acroal  5 лет назад +1

      Not really as it depends on the site and the wind conditions. Generally you can feel the rotor at a site, take a wind indicator like a piece of ribbon and hold it in the air, or look at the direction the grass is blowing in for example.

    • @mickbrett1608
      @mickbrett1608 5 лет назад

      @@acroal thanks..I have some vertical cliffs with mostly right angled tops, I always thought you would get rotor just at the cliff edge in this case and top landing would be out..

    • @acroal
      @acroal  5 лет назад

      @@mickbrett1608 yeah the cliffs you describe cause the most rotor and are tricky to take off from and especially land on. Depending on the site, there may be a band of clean air just behind the cliff edge that is not in the lift band. But it could be very small and drifting too far back would be bad news!
      On some of the cliffs i fly, i can find a part of the cliff that is not so steep and launch from there, below the top of the cliff.
      Always make sure you have a beach to land on just in case!

    • @mickbrett1608
      @mickbrett1608 5 лет назад

      @@acroal yeah bomb out options are slim too.. need some better pilots around to open it up..!

    I don't know the local rules at this spot and I've never done any costal flying (I learned to fly in Chamonix, all my flying is alpine thermal flying or occasionally soaring on valley breeze) but if the wind was strong I'd be setting up right on the ridge with my wing almost on the footpath. Is that not allowed or is there another reason not to?

    • @acroal
      @acroal  Год назад +1

      The path is in a wind shadow so the wind is going up and over the path. See 2:03 and the area marked 'dead air'. It would be very difficult to pull you wing up from there into the airflow, because there is no wind on the ground.
      The path can also be busy with people so not a good idea to block it.
