Ryu strategy was not a bad one, but he could have ended it sooner as he had the Shin in trouble several times. The Shin has proven to be vulnerable to head shots in the past and folds like a cheap tent. Good on the Shin for giving it another try, though and continuing to challenge himself.

7:50 but there are takedowns! trips and judo style throws are legal in karate point fighting, a bunch of high level dudes are great and very quick with them, as you see, Shinigami really likes them.

Interesting, it actually was kind of old style karate with the close range, trips, low kicks and knees - not the modern hop step, agile, outfighting style. And the ref even does the traditional "hajime" command, that's boss. 😁 These guys are having a good time.

@@Mighty15xThe whole karate shit is so arcane with all those styles and whatnot. One reason why they could never establish a unified, proper course of competition and standards like Muay Thai or Boxing was able to do. But yeah, generally speaking there's two quite different approaches, the old school style that's close range, square hips, low kicks and standing grappling, and the modern style which is very agile, long distance, blitzing in and out and yelling. Never forget the yelling. It's like SF - if they don't say Hadouken, the technique doesn't work, there's no fire coming out, etc.

One of the strengths of Karate should be the control of 'Ma'i', or fighting distance. Those trained in Shotokan-based styles (including Taekwondo) should practice blitzing in and out and staying at your optimal range.
