      And, going slower than a car means you have time to look around, rather than things just wizzing past. I've seen more of Sydney in my few years of cycling than all my years just living here.

    Well done on the double ton. That’s no easy feat. A really entertaining and enjoyable vid to watch. It looked a nice way to spend a day and it seemed more about what an interesting journey around Sydney’s parks has to reveal, rather than it being just a 200k crank-out fest. You really have the Midas touch when it comes to putting this stuff together.

    Fantastic effort Josh! Thanks for sharing this with your big audience - and for plugging the Bicycle NSW article. It’s exciting to see Garry’s concept grow in popularity. A bit of government funding to fill some missing links, improve some dodgy bits and add great signage would turn this into one of the world’s great bike adventures. I’ve done the whole thing too now - but in sections! If anyone is daunted by 200km in one day - fear not! Both loops pass several major stations. So it’s easy to break it up.

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  Месяц назад

      Thanks for watching the video Sarah! A similar concept would be what they did for the Bondi to Manly walk. Just add some signage and connect the missing links and it would be a fantastic asset.

    I’ve been doing “path explore” rides now for about a year now. after getting Covid, I felt lazy getting back on the bike. I kinda needed motivation. It was great to just do casual rides, just exploring different routes and paths. I like going solo, at my own pace, but I like it unplanned and just see where I end up

    Some of those cycle paths is what got me into cycling. My dad gave me his old push bike and I’d ride out to Homebush from Leichhardt along bike paths. Then it would be to parramatta, then it would be to prospect and back. I fell in love with exploring my home city, I wanted more and got on a road bike and hit the roads. Exploring so many cool places I never knew smudge had to offer. That feeling has since faded now that I have rode most routes too. But it really opened my eyes to how beautiful Sydney is.

      @@joshkwan thanks Josh, I want to start riding in different towns on weekends and spend a night or two in those towns. Planning on going to Canberra with my dad for a riding trip, we have done the snowy classic last year which was incredible and tough as guys to say the least, but that opened my eyes up to where cycling can take you. Never would I have thought I’d see that area on a bike like I did.. amazing.

  • @maetl.morphology

    This is fantastic. When I lived in Sydney, I rode a bunch of these individual sections (either on my clunky city bike with rack and fenders or a vintage steel road bike) but I did not know the bike paths were joined up enough now for a route around the whole of the Sydney basin to work. I know people are saying the clockwise direction makes more sense, but coming back from La Perouse through Centennial Park then over the bridge at sunset seems like an iconic way to finish. Definitely got me feeling sentimental. Well done!

    I did the southwest section in 2012 as part of my personal best 110km in one day, “Vineyard to Wynyard” haha. I did some stupid stuff to follow the M5 but have since discovered the Menai cycle network - I quite enjoy it with an e-bike in the winter (probably wise?) and love doing the loop with 5 bridges around Woronora & Alfords Bridges, the railway and Lugarno.
    Cronulla to airport to the city is a piece of cake now, and you join the Manly Ferry or take the (correct) roads through Cameray to get to Spit Bridge, and then ride Manly to Dee Why to Narrabeen Lake and Mona Vale all on cycleway. Or to Church Point.
    Cooks River Cycleway is probably the OLDEST in Sydney, back when they called it a walk in the 1980s, going from Centennial Drive to Princes Hwy. It now joins onto the crazy network at Olympic Park - that’s the real Cooks River Cycleway!

    I'm surprised by how much of this I recognized. I'm a bike lane explorer. Apart from the southern quarter of the trail, I've been to most of these places.
    The full James Cook path is also a favorite of mine. It cuts through from Strathfield all the way to Tempe. It's also a short ride from Olympic Park, so it ends up bisecting the Sydney loop

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  Месяц назад +1

      I think the route utilises some of the more popular bike paths, so it’s good to see you recognise portions of it.

    Great video Josh, and looked like a ton of fun! I did the 150km version over 2 days a while back, and planning to do it in a day with a mate of mine before Xmas (it'll be my longest ride if I make it). Then I'll think about the 200km+ version depending on how that goes... I'll be doing it clockwise to avoid the climb up from Alford's Point Bridge though! ;)
    As for the bike path 'ending' from Brighton.. not so. You can ride the path from Taren Pt Bridge to Kyeemagh without interruption. I couldn't quite work out where you thought it ended, but it's easy to follow all the way to Brighton Le Sands, where you actually have the choice of continuing on the path at street level, or a short length starting on the boardwalk along the beachside. After a few hundred metres they join again and it takes you to Kyeemagh under the Cooks River Bridge. No need to be on the road at all.

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  Месяц назад +1

      I looked at the 150km version too which looked nice. I also need to give it a go in the clockwise direction.
      The Brighton bit, due to the foot traffic we ended up just riding on the road. So we missed that whole section of bike path, which is a shame. I know it’s very scenic and nice. But it was just too busy.

      I’m really glad I got to do this, some of the bike paths were very beautiful. Even if I were riding in the area, I would usually be on the road and never see it.

    Thanks for bringing us on your PP-cherry-popping-journey! What an epic ride! 200km is quite the day out (we'll ignore Sharon for now)! It was interesting to see the different cycling infrastructure all along the way.
    Great photos too! And that shot at 26:42.
    I remember riding after a heavy meal. Felt like throwing up. Good job keeping it all in!

I've done maybe a bit over half the route, Meadowbank to Parramatta and M7 to Glenfield, Alfords Point and Woronora, Woolooware to Wolli Creek and Tempe to La Perouse. Actual Cooks River cycleway from Tempe to Sydney Olympic Park is also worth exploring and probably 80% plus off road although not part of the trail.

    My friend and I have recently fallen in love with riding those e-bikes around the CBD when we’re drunk, which has turned into planning a (sober) day outing to find a scenic cycle route to a cafe and then riding back. I am a complete bike newbie, don’t own a bike, am intimidated by the idea of figuring out the gear to get for biking, hate the idea of biking around cars but don’t know where the nice (safe) cycleways are, but this video has shown me there are nice safe ways to bike around with a view! Thanks Josh. Am so glad this video popped up on my algo - I think I’m going to take the plunge and invest in some gear to get out there!
    If you have any reccs for where to get gear for newbies, or best blogs or sources of info for nice cycle tracks, pls let me know :D

      This is also a good resource: cyclesydney.wiki/?
      All the best.

      Budget - Decathlon
      Mid range - Rapha
      Spendo - CCACHE

Can't believe you're only at 7k subs still....couldn't think of anything to improve your content....maybe some advertisement is all.

I don't go out with friends, I don't make plans, I don't book events, I just stay home and rot then occasionally commute to the CBD for work and go straight back home. From the vibes around Sydney it feels like most people are doing the same. Good to see some people are still spirited.

    By far my favourite stretch of the loop is the cycleway under Gore Hill Freeway - you wouldn’t know the cars were there! It’s a forest. Such a shame you went a weird way to Chatswood, not sure why. The path from Harbour Bridge to Gore Hill to Epping Road basically goes in a straight line. If you can dodge a few suburban streets at Epping to Carlingford, you can rejoin the network at the new tram line.
