SNES Classic Edition vs. Sega Genesis Mini

- The nineties console wars are alive and well in 2019, now in a much smaller form factor. In this episode of Versus, I compare and contrast the features, game selection, emulation quality, system aesthetics and the controllers of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini and the Super Nintendo Classic Edition. It’s a showdown of nineties gaming’s biggest rivalry: it’s the SNES Classic Edition vs. the Sega Genesis Mini.

* The shot of the “ideal” scanline option at 6:10 was captured from a real Sega Genesis using very poor composite video cables.
* Live camera shots were filmed with my Samsung Galaxy A6 cellphone. I’m not a big fan of the quality and will try to refrain from using live-action shots in future videos. - Игры

One minor inaccuracy in the video, the Tetris game on the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini is a 100% brand new title, like Darius. Yes, there is that rare version of Tetris for Mega Drive that was recalled and only a small handful exist today. With that said M2 has gone record several times stating that the Tetris on the Mini was newly created specifically for the Mini and is not an emulation of the rare recalled version of Tetris from back in the day.
The Genesis Mini is hands down the best Mini/Classic gaming device on the market. SEGA did an outstanding job. The NES Classic was lack luster due to the controller cords being so short in length. The SNES Classic doesn't have enough games on it but is better than the NES Classic. The Playstation Classic sucks, and the Neo-Geo Mini should have been made better. SEGA Genesis Mini is #1.
Super power.
@@blitzkrieg1174 We'll have to see if SNK can redeem themselves a bit with the Arcade Stick Pro that is coming out soon.
@@ostiariusalpha I've been curious about that item as well but I'm really not excited for it. I read that a lot of fighting games will be on it but will SNK have printed manuals with the moves to those fighting games included with the Arcade Stick Pro? Probably not. That right there makes the games difficult to play. I want to see a brand new Neo Geo console with new physical games hitting the market. That's what the gamers want!
Just like in the 90s, I ignored the console wars and got both

It just feels good to have both SNES and Sega Genesis back again with so much nostalgia for when I was kid those were the systems I always use to play when coming home from school! I Love Both!
Same here I have both. So fast the only mini console i refuse to buy is the Sony atrocity called mini classic. Free is spending too much on a paperweight that doesn't run games smoothly. If I have to spend extra money to fix it to where it's worthwhile, than I would've spent too much for a novelty.
@@Openreality your silly my classic plays thousands of games all the ones on both consoles in this video, and for $ 25 dollars. You haven’t the slightest.
Superb, very in depth! I was a SNES kid and have the SNES Classic but the Genesis Mini is looking quite great right now! Thank you for your work!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it.
Agree!
I have both and they are definitely worth it
the Sega Genesis mini is awesome, even way more awesome than nes classic edition and SNES classic!!
Genesis does: "Offers a mini console without creating artificial scarcity" You can't do this on Nintendo, Genesis does: "Provides an adequate number of games for the price." You Can't do this on Nintendo!

My only problem with the SNES Classic is that it doesn't have TMNT 4: Turtles in Time and criminally it doesn't have Chrono Trigger.
Sonja Adamson just hack it and u can have any game you want.....
Use Hakchi. Nintendo deserves it.
Chrono Trigger I can probably understand. TMNT can simply be due to licensing.
yeah i have to agree with you about chrono trigger
@@ourphilosophyis9119 Nintendo knows that fans are going to "hack" the NES and the SNES so they placed a massage for the hackers. I mean they even used more space to add games, so I guess they are fine with the hacking. ;)
I have both, but I also do enjoy the Sega Genesis Mini more.
Same here plus it doesn’t have a whopping 4:3 resolution ratio like the snes mini. You actually get a full screen with Sega.
Despite the Genesis Mini having double the amount of games, I find myself playing the SNES Mini far more. It's just a better all round experience imo, from the amazing selection of world-class games to the superior experience with the classic SNES controller. I think even the menu and user interface on the SNES Mini is more slick and user friendly than the Genesis one. It's seem that just like back in the day the Genesis does what Nintendoesn't--it just doesn't do it quite as well ultimately, which was also true back in the day too imo.
Agreed ! Genesis mini might have more games but i only play a handful of them like Earth worm jim for example.
Where as with my snes mini I always play every game it has for hrs on end everytime.
Also the controllers for snes are way more comfy. 👍
The snes classic controller is better for fighting games, but then there’s only one fighting game on the classic. Switching controller might solve that
Always been a SEGA fan and incredibly happy with the Genesis Mini - loving it. Happy to report that I find it to be the best of the Mini consoles thus far.
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised as someone who's always been a huge SNES fan and a middle of the road Genesis fan at best. I've played it more already than I have my SNES Classic which I've had almost two years now.
@@jimmyeddy Your tale reminds me a lot of what happened to me back in around 2012 when I got my Model 2 Genesis and a few games, my 1st games were a repro cart of the modded EUR version of Mega Man The Wily Wars, Batman & Robin, Sonic 3, the 6 pack that comes with Sonic 1, Streets of Rage 1, Revenge of Shinobi, Columns, Golden Axe 1 and Super Hang On, Mortal Kombat 3 and Toy Story, later in around 2016 up to this year I got Ms. Pac Man, got gifted with Aladdin after getting 2nd place in a Super Street Fighter 2 tournament at a retro game store which also rewarded me with a front-loader NES and 2 of the 3 TMNT games of said console and perhaps my big deal (until now, because it took me a LOOONG time to find it)... Sonic & Knuckles (which also means in my case that I can play Sonic 3 & Knuckles in real hardware).
Here it is 2019 and we still have SNES vs Genesis! What a great time to be a gamer. Love the SNES, but I have to go with the Genesis mini. Double the games, and the fact that you can change the regions and languages, hints playing different versions of the game is sweet!
Me too, I won't deny that I also love the SNES Classic, but the Genesis Mini is just too great (and at my place for my fortune was easy peasy to find and with a good price as well... unlike the SNES Classic that even so, I can still find it from time to time), the only "dissapointing?" thing is that the console don't have the 6 button controllers like the JPN mini (but since I didn't had the chance to get/play Genesis games with the original 3 button controller... those helped me to ACTUALLY have the experience of how it was to play Genesis prior to the 6 button controllers, and said controllers are totally A+ in my book).
you can just download genesis games and put them on the snes mini

Why a ps2 mini? Is there any particular games you wanna see on it that aren’t easy to get for the actual ps2?
I had both in the 90s, first the SNES and then the Genesis a few years later with the console redesign. I found that after buying the Genesis though, I still continued to grow my SNES library even more than I did for my newly bought Genesis. For me...SNES all the way!
I grew up with the Sega mega drive and I just got my mini console it’s amazing having a great time the awesome memories flowing back 👍👍👍👍👍
Same. I only had 2 games for the mega drive/genesis as a kid Sonic 1 and Mega Games 1 (a collection with the games world cup '90, Columbus and Super Hang-On). :D I can finally try more of the genesis games that i missed back then. :D
Great job as always! Especially liked the editing, well done.
I have all the mini systems and the TG-16 on preorder, but I haven't even opened one of them yet. I'm not sure why I buy them, lol.
I'm undecided on getting a TG-16 mini. I think my money would be better spent on a Turbo Everdrive for my PC Engine. All the mini systems do look neat lined up together though.
What a fantastically in-depth comparison. Great video!
The ultimate cop-out: get both. These little machines are both amazing and at MSRP they make the perfect 1-2 time capsule of the 16-bit era. Once the PC-Engine/TG-16 is released next year the era will be complete. =)
You know what... you're right!!! And I really want to get the Mini Pc-Engine/TG-16, not only because of the gaming history, but mostly because I NEVER owned the real deal, heck, if it wasn't by AVGN or a Nintendo magazine at my place that mentioned the console during a Castlevania retrospective (mentioning of course... Rondo of Blood) I would have been confused about what is a TG-16.

Glad to own the Snes Mini, but I may just have to get the Sega Mini too now. Great selection of games on there.
Wasn't expecting the Genesis to sound as good as it does. I can hear the difference but it's not bad like it has been in previous clone consoles :)
Yeah, I'm in the same boat. The Mini has a crisper sound in a way, but it's also considerably "tinnier". It blows the sound quality of the Genesis Flashback out of the water though.
i feel the same
I was very sceptical when the Genesis mini was first announced due to AT Games previous flashbacks being absolutely awful. But after seeing the reviews it's by far hands down the best mini of the lot.
Mini is brighter (they probably boosted the highs), while the original has less highs but is WAY warmer and fuller. I like the original better, but neither is bad, and I can see why the original is hard to emulate.
This one was made by M2 and Sega themselves. M2 are a very talented team and Sega paid top dollar for them.
The sound chips in At Games Genesis consoles and those weird knockoff Chinese consoles are very poor Chinese hardware. Sega went all out to distance themselves from previous works of At Games with this console. I wouldn’t be surprised if they started working on a Dreamcast Mini next. I don’t see them doing a Saturn Mini cause Saturn did poorly in the States.

Gotta be honest, I really love how the Genesis mini is on the spot, I never owned the Model 1 and 3 button controllers (have a Model 2 which I have a VEEERY special care because of how long it took me to get it, 6 button controllers only for it) but the MAIN reason I have the mini console (at the side of my model 2 console that is actually hooked up to my LED Screen TV as well... despite having only access to composite video... maybe I'll need a component cable or RGB Scart or whatever to get better picture from my model 2 console) is because it made me go out of my Nintendo fanboy position into something totally neutral that if you ask me what console is best nowdays, I just say, pick the one that catches your attention... but if you can afford to all of them... go nuts with all consoles, heck, I recently got a Sonic & Knuckles cart for my Genesis and NOW I can play in the original way Sonic 3 & Knuckles (but my GCN Sonic Mega Collection JPN and USA was my 1st time playing said game... I regret nothing as I loooove Sonic 3 overall, both as standalone games and combined)
When I heard your accent I would have put money on you preferring the SNES.
Good quality review and honest. 👍🏻
What’s that supposed to mean??
Great review. Really good work :) thanks for sharing
Great work! Great effort! I own both mini consoles and am loving them!
"Personally I'm still in awe it's able to process all that blast" Haha. I love it.
Whoever was in charge of SEGA's advertising back in the day was a genius. SEGA never really explained what blast processing is, except that they had it, and Super Nintendo didn't.
Approximately 7Mhz compared to 2- or 3Mhz
@@oaka5639 I just think it's funny that they called it "blast processing." I mean, if it was 4 mhz would it still be "blast" Probably.
The Mega Drive can load level content off-screen opposed to the sluggish SNES, which in the early days was prone to slow down and in latter titles requires transitions between screens or reduced enemies on screen and static BG layers. Example, even though Super Metroid is a fantastic game, it reduces the BG layering during boss fights and oh, those dreaded screen changes.
They talk about the gimmick of blast processing on console wars on prime. It about sega vs Nintendo in the 90s

Fuck all.
Very nice episode!
I have both systems, but my SNES classic was purchased hacked with the addition of all of the games from the NES classic, plus many more NES and SNES games (including the biggest omission from the SNES classic, Chrono Trigger), making it the hands-down winner for me. I only paid $10 more than the original SNES classic price for it, but it only came with one controller (I wound up getting another controller later). For the Genesis Mini, I went ahead and purchased a 6 button wireless controller for it, and I'm glad that I did. I would have like to have seen some more sports and racing games on the Genesis Mini, but I'm pleasantly surprised with what they included on it. I really wanted Aladdin on it, but now I understand that Disney is re-releasing that game along with Lion King for the current consoles (along with many additional features).
Love the double dragon tune in the background I spent some many quarters on that game in arcade stores I wished arcades would make a come back anyone agree hit like if you agree

The fact that the SNES doesn't have "Zombies ate my neighbors " is a dealbreaker
That'd be a good one to have on either system. Glad I own the SNES cartridge though

Doesn't have the sequel either! (Ghoul patrol), but it's not too hard to add them.
The choice is pretty clear at least for me, the genesis mini features DOUBLE the amount of games of the Snes.. lol
Nintendo has kind of a reputation at being stingy.
When i heard the game number the SNES had i was like. Come on! At least put thirty games for Christ sakes, is not like there is any extra costs to putting more games especially with Nintendo that had so many first party games.
Pretty underated channel, keep up the good work 😄
Best review video on the two 16 bit mini systems. Well done.
I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching!
great vid! looks like i need to get a genesis mini asap!!
As a Kid who grew up on the SNES, i have to say that the Genesis Mini is the better Retro console. While the SNES Mini has all the great classics, the Genesis Mini has just double the games for almost the same price. It might have a few stinkers, it has still alot of Classics that you know and love and even some third party games i was surprised where on there, like Strider, Castle of Illusion and Mega Man the Wily Wars.
While all of the games on the SNES Mini are great, it just can't compete with the quantity of the Genesis Mini. If they maybe included games like Final Fantasy IV, DKC 2 and maybe other third Party games like Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse and Legend of Mystical Ninja. If Nintendo put these games on there and a few more, i would've said SNES Mini. But the Genesis Mini just has more to offer.
Snes has less games but the games they do offer are better let's be real!
Disagree!
Great video! Very informative!
I'm a Sega fan since I was a kid, and even when the emulation in this mini system was perfect for me; giving me something so exactly similar to the real feel, now with your comparison I could tell the difference between real hardware and the mini system. The audio is great, yes, but it's missing some reverb on a few channels. I have to say that I didn't noticed until I watched your video. At least they dropped the At@games team for the M2! How bad could be the genesis mini with them. I have 2 of their retro consoles and the emulation is awful in many ways: input lag, horrible sound and blurred, washed picture. Bravo for Sega.
And bravo for Nintendo: the sound of the SNES is the part that most emulators can't imitate as good as this mini system does.
Good video overall, I did enjoy it a lot.
Garbage no need mutch power.
@ so, saying that I like both SNES and Mega Drive, you said that "garbage no need much power". Does that mean that you consider both system as garbage?
You said how bad would a Genesis Mini be with At Games ? It’s been proven to be very badly. At Games made a Mini in 2017 and then released a newer version of it in 2018. Both were failures and came off as laughable.
Because of Nintendo releasing the flawless SNES Classic, Sega dropped At Games for M2
regarding the genesis emulation sound quality, even the actual hardware can be wildly variable between revisions due to the presence of the (preferable) YM2612 FM chipset vs YM3438, the actual implemented signal path of the chip, and if it unfortunately uses a 3438 whether it's an ASIC or an all-in-one... the emulation sounds like it does a great job compared to a 2612 as far as i'm concerned but the PWM channel is seemingly audibly muted :/

A nice little side note about the Genesis mini. If you get the official 6 button controller to go along with it, instead of having to wait 5 seconds via the Start button, you can just press the Mode button and it will load up the save/load menu instantaneously.
Neat tip! I already bought two six button Retro-bit pads for the original Genesis (not the USB version) to put 8bitdo DIY boards in to use on my original console, otherwise I might've gotten Retro-bit's "official" USB pad.

Yes, SNES Classic Mini does have great titles, such as Megaman X & Contra 3, but when compared to Sega Genesis Mini, SNES Classic Edition was still 21 Game Short, plus, the Lack of Vertical or Horizontal Shoot em up?, Damn Nintendo, You forgot to add Gradius 3, Pop’n Twinbee, Darius Twin, Darius Force, etc.
Especially, you discontinued the production, that’s no fun.

I'm a Super Nintendo guy, but from what I've seen....both units are great! For me the only downfall from the Super Nintendo side was that they didn't include Super Mario All Stars, I really love Super Mario 3! Good thing that both units could be modified.
I like the Genesis.
I'm just wondering where is the Master System Mini???
Seriously. I grew up with that system. Plug and play Rastan, Wonder Boy In Monster Land, Y's, and Phantasy Star II would be great. Don't get me wrong, I have a CRT, a Genesis with the Powerbase converter, and all of those games, but plug and plays are just so easy and convenient, plus I get all the games on a big flat screen. No set up time and everything is in one place.
@@matthewlister3755 I grew up with SMS too, and would LOVE a plug & play one with the games you mentioned, plus Miracle Warriors, Zillion 1 & 2, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Space Harrier 1, Shinobi, and as many others they could fit on it!
You're referring to the states, Master System wasn't even a dent in the market. Not enough people know about it to even make the mini worth it.

Thanks for watching and I appreciate it!
Great vid. I want the swga even more now. I got the nes and snes minis already and they are fantastic.
Snes wins with a clean sweep!!! No in all seriousness they’re both great buys and I recommend both but I will say if you’re just comparing what the consoles come with and not when they are hacked (oops was I supposed to say that) then I’ll go with the snes mini just because I believe Nintendo gave you the very best games for the system you can get for the Super Nintendo (besides chrono trigger and dd country 2) while the Genesis did give you more games but they didn’t give you all of the best they had to offer. Plus I understand they wanted to keep it classic but the three button controllers are a big no no especially when they add games like street fighter or Virtual fighter 2 in there.
Genesis Mini's big advantage is letting people rediscover true hidden gems like Alisia Dragoon and Dynamite Headdy. They have as many stone-cold classics as the SNES Classic (Mario, Zelda and Metrioid are checked by Sonic, Phantasy Star and Streets of Rage). And one more minor point... they have licensed games! Two Mickey Mouse games! In all seriousness they're both great.
I got the SNES with Super Mario World on my birthday and about a year later for XMAS got a model 2 Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Good lord those were amazing times back then (early 90s) and I truly consider that the golden age of gaming. Long before it became mainstream and corporate. It was all about the games and I love them both equally. 16-bit and the 6th gen (PS2, GC, XBOX, DC) are my absolute favorites.
Both look great but if I had to pick one I would go for the Snes mini because I have more nostalgia for it since I grew up owning a Snes. Now I can afford to buy both so most likely I will & the TG16 mini. Really cool video, thanks.
Genesis mini loses out the gate with that 3 button controller
I don't get why they would bother with the 3 button controller in the North American region when in Japan they went with the 6 button, just cost cutting wise make all the controllers the same 6 button. I don't buy the excuse that the Genesis originally came with the 3-button, because some people picked it up when the 6 button was the pack in controller, nevermind including 2 games in the line up that play much better with 6 buttons SF2 CE and Eternal Champions.
@@lazarushernandez5827 yeah Sega had a brain cramp on that one

@@Stoppskylten I guess I was remembering incorrectly, I knew there were 6 button pack ins, but apparently it was with the model 2. They still should've just gone with the 6 button controller, nostalgia or not, it was the better, more complete Genesis controller.
Sega has more games included thats fine but i always lobend the more colourfull Grafik and the Sound on snes.
Great comparison!
great review I subscribed
I passed on the snes mini but got a mini genesis
you did the right thing! Your parents must be proud!! btw akuma is cool!!
Same here, too young to have memories with either originally but I always respected 90s Sega over 90s Nintendo so I cared way more about a Genesis mini
Great vid, man! I hacked my SNES Classic (and got all the SNES, NES, Genesis, TG16, and GBA games i want on it), so i won't be buying the Genesis Mini, but i'm so glad Sega made one for all the millions of retro gamers who missed out on Nintendo's WAY too small production run of it's classics.
The hacking aspect is one of the cooler aspects of the Classic systems. It's not something I'm into myself, but it's great how easy it is to do and also to reverse.
Yeah, I got two SNES Classic one hacked with SNES, other hacked with Genesis and GBA. After Genesis hack comes up, I'll remove from SNES and add more GBA games into that one. Just doesn't feel right playing all those Genesis game with a SNES controller.
I think the sound is improved on both versions. This might be because the hardware DAC's (digital to analogue converters) are less than 16bit in the original versions but they would be 16bit output on modern emulation software.
Ahhh the original console wars are back. :)
Genesis Mini has to take it for amount of games and presentation, but SNES Mini had zero dud titles, and better mix of genres.
SNES Classic is the absolute best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loved standing in line 7 before release date. That line was mf long!!!!!!!!!!! I was the first mf in line! Kept it 100% stock. Did not hack it.
NES Classic is 2nd best! Took me about 2 weeks after initial release date to get it. Had to stand in line at midnight, due to the bih scalpers! OMG those were the fun days. Installing Hakchi on that ish was a dream come true. Got all these Sega Genesis games on my NES Classic. I did not buy the Sega mini. It does look nice though.
Sega Genesis is the best!!!
Great video
Bruh how do only have 2k subs? Btw I subbed
Snes Classic for me :)
Sega Genesis mini for me ;)
I have both!
