As a Mennonite who is also very into historical fashion I was so glad to find this video! I love how you made the cape dress look so very Edwardian without compromising the traditional dress. Keep making videos!! You did such a good job!

I always get so excited when i see mennonite representation!!!!! My dad was born into a really conservative mennonite community in mexico - they definitely dress differently to the photos you show here, but the historical photos remind me of a picture i have of my great grandparents!! Beautiful work!

I come from a large Mormon family (1 sister, 7 brothers) - and while Mormon's aren't nearly so conservative as Mennonites they're still technically plain folk. My friend, I can relate. I love that you're helping your sisters out and making them dresses. That's so sweet of you.
(also, I love that you name your sewing machines.

You are remarkably skilled in technique, skill, and eye. Your sense of humor had me chuckling along and I was absolutely won over at your hatred for both synthetics and the sound of electric mechanics. Production and editing also top notch. Loved the video from start to finish and I will anxiously await more. Keep up the good work!

What a beautiful dress (and sister)! I have been sewing since my grandmother put a needle into my hands at age three, so I’ve been sewing over 50 years now. I have a Singer red eye treadle machine very similar to yours that was passed down to me from my great great grandmother, who bought it new in 1901.

The colors together are marvellous. I also love how elegant it looks and how with just a few props/accessories it really does look like an Edwardian Walking Suit. Mennonite chic ftw!

I was born Mennonite and have only recently gotten interested in what my ancestors would have worn in the 1730s to 1740s... as that was when my father’s side immigrated to America. I currently live in Williamsburg Virginia which is full of opportunities for historical re-enactors.

There are different "sects" of Mennonite also, who have different styles...such as women wearing black caps & scarfs. Then there are those where the women wear white caps. Also there is the Mennonite church that the women dress just like anyone else in the country & you wouldn't know they were Mennonite unless they told you.

Yup! My grandfather was born into a Mennonite family in Lancaster Co., PA. I have plenty of family who dress in the conservative fashion, but others don't.

I come from a Mennonite family and go to a Mennonite church and unless you knew me and my family you’d never know, my church isn’t very traditional as far as dress. I do see some wearing more traditional Mennonite clothing at church but majority dress causal and the majority of society. Most friends of mine as well are also Mennonite but again you wouldn’t know unless they mentioned it themselves because they don’t dress traditional.

I enjoyed your vid very much, the best part is the clowning at the end, weird the still shots, because you can see how much your sister and you love each other and how much your making the dress means and how much she enjoys and appreciates your attention and bespoke dress. WELL DONE YOU! I am now a fan Edward, and will be looking for that book, as I begin my sewing adventures

Just wanted to say what a fantastic project! It's nice to see more men doing historical costuming! I work in museums and have made a lot of period costume (Roman through to Victorian!) for my friends and colleagues and am attempting to learn enough tailoring to have an everyday historybounding wardrobe of my own - unfortunately the patterns are harder to come by and the tailoring techniques I find much more challenging! My husband is a vicar so I might be attempting cassocks and vestments during this current time of isolation....
Your attention to detail is beautiful to see and the care and passion is really inspiring and I hope to see more in the future! Your video editing and commentary are on point too! Bravo!

@@EdwardianTailorI knew there were different groups & I've always loved modest dress. I'm a Secular Discalced (the religious, I.e. monks & nuns), male & female, wear sandals) Carmelite & only wear dresses & skirts. I do my best to find long sleeves & long hems. I'm at the point where I'm seriously considering making all my clothes.
I prefer dresses as some skirts give me backache. (Nasty arthritis, a side effect of the Fall...)
I would love to learn more about tailoring & have purchased the Keystone book & another in the same vein. (Can't recall its name...)
Hoping the world regains its mind, SOON! We can't even buy salt!
God keep you safe & healthy.
Addendum: Would you add titles and or links to patterns, etc.?? Also, what happens to the ink? Does heat set it or erase it?

My wife and I both have vintage Singer sewing machines - my wife's machine is from the 1950s, so as it is a "Singer" from the 1950s we call her Doris after another famous "singer" from the '50s!
Great tips on caring for your patterns (using the interfacing - I've never used modern interfacing, but this is a great use for it and a great way to preserve the original patterns).
And the method for permanent pleating with vinegar - thank you so much, my wife and I will certainly try that. Our interest is in fashions from the 1910s and 20s - rather than Edwardian (1901 - 1909), but there's often a lot of pleating in women's fashion then also. In the past it was possible to send things away for permanent pleating, but it is getting very difficult to find people who can still do this.
I must say it's a little strange seeing you use the vintage Singer with all the over-locked edges. And also seeing short sleeves such as these on an Edwardian inspired dress seems rather odd, but as it is for your sister and to her requirements I suppose needs must. It does look a little like a 1930s dress from the waist up and Edwardian from the waist down. But I guess with out period under garments such as corsets it would be difficult to acheive a true Edwardian silhouette.
I'm very impressed to see someone else who takes the time to press everything as you go - keep it up. You might benefit in some wooden paddles to press against things (after you have pressed them with the iron and steam) - It really can help (although I'm not sure how much on synthetics or blends). And a tailor's ham might also be a great help both for pressing and to help in sewing. I'd also suggest you get a few pieces of think cotton wadding to help with the pressing at the hems, seams and in your pleating - artfully placed under and around things you can avoid pressing in the lines of hems etc that may show from underneath.
I'm a musician specialising in 1920s music and really appreciated some background music that is appropriate for the period of your work. I wish some of the others who do similar work to yours (often wonderful videos except for the music) would think more about the music they choose for their videos. Thank you.
And keep up the good work this really a great video. I look forward to your next projects. Best wishes from New Zealand

I agree about natural fabrics being better, even if we do have to iron them. It is nice to wear fabric that can breathe.

Really enjoyed the video. Thank you for making it. Consuelo is a beautiful machine with an appreciative owner. It appears your lovely project has made it's recipient quite happy, that always does the soul well for a creator. It is a gift to be able to use our gifts and passions to do something that brings happiness to our loved ones. Your sister seems to either be a wonderful actress or really enjoy having a fun new dress her brother made especially for her.
The RUclips algorithm may have realized I follow several Historical Costumers for sewing and history and several Mennonite moms for other things and you magically appeared. My minor obsession with Singer treadle machines may have been a bonus. Love this video, looking forward to other videos in future. Consuelo cameos appreciated.
