The petticoat is lovely enough to be worn as a skirt, all the swishing and swirling. The material for it may not be historically accurate, but the idea of using what you have on hand, definitely is. I adore the look of twill tape finished seams. The black with the blue wool is gorgeous. My afternoon is now going to be spent getting a bunch of masks cut out in preparation for sewing tomorrow. Thank you for sharing your project. It was lovely to watch, and I will definitely check out your previous one on point-turning. Take care, stay safe.

A tip from a daily corset wearer. If u do make a corset i can recommend that you make a fully mock up (completed corset minus the bias layers, as you will be shocked at how small that gap will become if your have built a sturdy corset. 2-4” of shrinking to your natural waist is normal and comfortable.) i have a range that shrink my waist from 26” to 22-20” of which means i start with a 6” gap at the back and end with a 1-2” gap. Just so everyone knows :)

Ivy Banwell thank you Ivy, that’s a really good tip. I keep reading about shrinkage but no explanation as to why. To those who already know, it is obvious whilst it is considerably less so for those of us who don’t!

Haven't had a waistline that small since I was in my 20s (21" waist an 1982). Even then I still couldn't do up my mum's old wedding dress, her waist was 19" when she married in 1957. That was without corsets or any thought of dieting or even healthy eating, just fresh home grown and cooked food, no ready made or take aways, and walk or cycle everywhere as I didn't drive. Like the skirt and blouse but I prefer the regency style short stays for support as I find them more comfortable. Nowadays my much larger stomach/waist hates anything tight.

I just want to say thank you on how many natural textiles you use in your projects! While it is so much cheaper to buy synthetic fabrics, the microfibers produced by them are very harmful to the environment. In your projects, you are always using natural materials like wool and cotton, and even silk organza! I know it’s very expensive, but not only does it give your projects that extra touch, it also helps the environment. Thank you, and keep making beautiful art!

    • @BellaMaesDesigns

@@BellaMaesDesigns yes I agree, modern natural cloting is so hard to find...
However, I'm curious: how do you take care of historical cloting, big wool skirts, corsets and huge petticoats? I guess chemises and cotton blouses are OK in the washing machine, but for wool or silk...?

Yay, another think it -stitch it person. I've been sewing for more than 4 decades & have never used a Comercial pattern. I even teach as my volunteer work, I decide what the project will be &whip it together. Then I use bristol board or whatever so the people attending the given group can have an idea of how to trace & cut what is getting made. Backward or what lol.😂, lovely items you've made sweetie

💖Love her "Wearing History's Elsie" blouse. Although not a huge fan of buttoning blouses...
      1) ⏳Battle w/an hour glass figure. In order to button properly, I will always have to size up to fit upper & lower proportions😔. That leaves all sorts of excess fabric at the waist🤓.
      2) The above is also partly why I tend to leave blouses unbuttoned over a tank top. ☀️The other reason is that I live in an climate that tends to run desert hot🏜. Find 💞blazers are more of an ❄A/C ofc, night or winter wear. So, in🌡hotter months an unbuttoned blouse can serve as my "light" blazer for a tailored impression.
Really 💕love💕 how Bella added a drawstring channel to her blouse, so she could cinch in the waist.😉Not a skilled sewer, but have done some refashioning♻️. Think I will experiment creating a peplum on some blouses doomed for the thrift store.
      ☘Good luck with your project!

i found your channel last night and have been enjoying your videos and dedication to perfectionism in your garments. i, too, started sewing at a young age with my grandmother. my mom did some sewing when i was little, but not a lot. i started with barbie clothes, but i had to sew my barbies into their formal wear because i didn't know the proper way to make darts, closures, etc. i sewed some of my own garments as a teen, including my graduation dress. i sewed my daughter and nieces dresses until they were about 7 (my daughter and i had a parting of the ways on ideas of what was cute). i'm almost 51 now and have not done any real sewing (aside from masks) in quite a while, but i am getting up the courage to try again. i want to try self drafting because i am plus size and have a very full bust. rarely do i find a pattern that would actually fit me that wouldn't need a ton of adjustments and i don't really know how to do all of that. i never took my skill level beyond intermediate. so i'm really enjoying channels like yours that teach finishing techniques and drafting, as well as fitting. thanks.

She said she practiced on her dolls, and then was able to cut a piece of cloth to make her own dress. She taught us well, and we made all our own clothes. I remember her working at a bathing suit sewing factory during the second WW making parachute packs, and later making bras. My sister and I made our own wedding dresses. It's a wonderful life. I like the skirt, the petticoat is wonderful, but the blouse steals the show for me. I like it better every time I see it. Wonderful project, looking forward to the jacket.

I've been in a sewing slump for a while, and haven't had the motivation to work on any projects anymore, but your video and watching you through the process of creating this outfit not only inspired me to get back into sewing again but also inspired me to look into Edwardian-WW1 fashion era. Maybe I will splurge on the patterns in this video and recreate the whole outfit!
