A Naofumi in every isekai would absolutely suck. He's an amazing MC because of the story, not because of his archetype. If we had a cynical antihero for every isekai anime then isekai would quickly lose its appeal. Imagine if Rimuru from Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken was like Naofumi. id like to point out that only naofumi thinks here mental state is still that of a young child at this point as the others have realized she is far more mature then naofumi at this point. in fact the only reason raftailia thought she hadn't matured mentally was because she was comparing herself to naofumi who at the time was very very broken and acting like a child.

I just wanted to say that Naofumi's "densness" stems to 95% from the trauma he received during the betrayal. A woman liking him that way doesn't work in his mind without her also being a backstabbing bitch, thus the only way for him to see Raphtalia in a good light is to deny any and all hints and signs that she might like him in a romatic way. If Raphtalia were to just straight up confess to Naofumi he would problably play it of as some kind of joke. Also merely entertaining the thought, that Raphtalia might like him that way makes him remember Malty wich majorly pisses him off. So Naofumi being "dense" is less him being dense and more a psycological protective mecanism to not become mad of rage. ***Spioler territory*** Just to exemplify just how bad his trauma is he would wake up in the middel of the night of fear of being robbed in the presence of a female, very much how one might be conditioned to waking up a few minutes befor the alarm goes of or waking up around that time despite no alarm being set, and Raphtalia is no exeption up until some time after the events of the third wave. Also, there is an event in the webnovel were due to some circumstance Naofumi loses all his hatred for Malty, the king and the people of this world. In this state Naofumi was very much aware of the romantic fellings of his female companions and of his own feelings, but his companions found him creepy in that state and made him absorb all his anger back.
A lot of Japanese voice actors have relationships working like this, it makes the most sense to have actors who know each other to work together, than two complete strangers. It also saves the company a lot of money due to less sessions and shorter time spent recording. Of course these professional voice acting isn't cheap, their prices are negotiated by small or large agency who controls their market... When I say Japan's entertainment industry is CUTTHROAT. I'm being literal.

The anime makes him a bit tame but he is an asshole with more hatred in the novel, it gives more depth to the "Raphtalia pulling him back" moments throughout the series imo(still emotional in the anime, but less impactful).
Im noticing a lot of anime just leaving out things adding there own ideas designs actions and words that would change the story alot or a little or characters like one main reason i like him as a character was because he was down right evil to moat people and a asshole even his eyes in the manga says he gives no fucks and the anime taming all that down rubs me the wrong way
SPOILERS something important about the abilities is that some of those the iron maiden and the blood sacrifice are actually part of the curse series, the wrath shield. Each legendary weapon can unlock these types of the 7 deadly sins but its due to emotions feeling enough envy or greed or lust will unlock those forms and those will show up on the other heroes. But the other thing is that the wrath shield has a counter attack flame that burn his enemies with cursed fire and leaves a curse on them. Its very strong but he starts loosing to his rage when hes got it active as do all curse series weapons what ever the emotion its up to 11 with these, using its ultimate attack also has consequnces like greed devalues your drops from good stuff to worth less junk as well as your gear to barely intact garbage. The other thing is that he also has more than just those for abilities his greatest asset is the shields passives. Due to him unlocking numerous shields the bonuses stack so he keeps getting stronger, plus the passive do the same the slave user shield and monster user shield increase the growth of slaves and monsters under his control. Which is why his two companions in the next wave will be so powerful that they out shine even the heroes. In this world levels are not as important as your overall stats some one who is higher level might have lower stats like in ep 6 the person they were fighting was over 30 -and had a job extension choosing a more advance path of growth, but they beat him because those 2 had much better stats. Also his passives increase healing items he uses so anything he gives to some one -administers, will dramatically boost making it far more effective. As for his love life he knows some girls will like him but he just is so traumitized by the bitch that he just can't do that right now. Also this is from the web novel so it may not be in the anime or light novel but the bow hero is from a world with espers, his own being one that makes it so he is a much better shot, its fairly weak as there is one that makes you never miss. But when he reveals this to them he theorizes that the shield hero also has 2 esper powers, the first is that he is immune to negitive statues effects such getting drunk, sea sickness, ect i think it includes poison but im not totally sure of all poison working on him, he can eat a fruit thats concentrated booze and feel nothing, they usually drop one into a barrel and using to make a keg. he eats them one after another, it also has the bonus of restoring sp to max but the other heroes can't do this. The second is animal friendship, which is another reason the shield choose him. Its also why a lot of his party are demi humans and the girls all want him, their mostly demi humans including raphtallia, and a killer whale woman and a white tiger girl, both look like normal women except for some small things. But he has basically a bonus when dealing with them.
There's actually some mistakes the anime made. Like the Naofumi being able to hurl air strike shield. Air strike shield is suppose to be a static shield. The only way he can use them offensively is blocking an enemy's retreat to prevent them from dodging his allies' attacks.

And based on the light novel, ASS is actually able to move, as *SPOILERS* he uses it as an aerial platform that is dragged through the air to land safely while he was in Glass's world.

naofumi is not evil. he's just returning the deed that the world has done to him. he's actually probably the most heroic and nice guy out of all of the heros
Honestly I love this show and I started reading the Manga which kept me reading for a little more than 2 days. I love this Story and am looking forward to seeing more, the highlight of the Story for me in the Queen. She’s awesome, beautiful, brutal, smart and actually a help to the Main Character. Actually he only pushed Raphtalia to get over her fears. When facing the two headed cerberus, he tried to force her to attack in order to survive, but also to conquer her fears. He explains to her the reason why he needs her. The main reason is because he could not pick up a sword and attack, so he needed her to attack. The problem she was still resisting and he told her to run, since she would not attack. He would not force her if she could not help him. So, she decides to attack when he needs her to. She always viewed him as a parent or friend at the beginning, since he was supporting her and nice to her.
Interestingly enough I think what people miss about Naofumi and how he sees Raphtalia as a kid not an adult is based on his broken mental image, and is dealt with after his duel with Motoyasu. We see his actual mental image and thoughts and how badly they were broken by Mynes betrayal. Remember he cant taste anything and when he sees them free Raphtalia he only sees her as a child not as she currently is. His mental image of things is so shaken and broken that its warped, and he doesn't even hear her saying she will fight by his side forever. So when he finally comes too as Raphtalia pulls him back after the duel. He asks her, who are you? because he literaly Does not recognize her new form since mentally he only ever saw her as the same pip squeak. this is even shown when the Blackmsith calls her a little lady and Naofumis response is huh? We see though after the duel that he can taste things again because of the hope Raphtalia brought to him
The fact that Naofumi is oblivious to Raphtalia's advances are untrue he know about them but he does not act apon it. Hes know about them sent's she was set free from the slave crest the first time. i will not spoil much but he does eventually warm up to her. if people wanna know more your free to ask i have read the manga and in the process of the light novel and i will forward any info you want to know through private messages. not to spoil what others dont wanna know. :)
Iron maiden is actually a skill who's prerequisites are shield prison and change shield attack. After both those conditions are met, an actual iron maiden is summoned to crush the shield prison.
read the novel... Naofumi loves raphtalia more than a lover so when she said she wants to be his wife he agred right a way.. even thou he doesnt see her as a romantic partner at the moment= he loves her too much that he wants her happinest secured and yeah he promise to marry her when she is older
Can I just say, like Goblin Slayer, he started with high hopes, had them burned to ash before him, then his immediate actions afterwards of seeking vengeance against those who had wronged him, I can see myself going down that same path if I'm handed the same situation.
The ending for the web novel was one of the most satisfying ever. To spoil it a bit, he got to stay with Rapthalia romantically, yet managed to escape the FBI factor.
Honestly, Raftalia is in full an analog for what Malty lost when she betrayed Naofumi. She was chosen because of his hatred of Malty, and received the care and ultimately the affection Malty abandoned upon betraying him.
I think that the anime version of Naofumi is significantly taller than his book version, as he looks to be only two or three inches shorter than Motoyasu, the spear hero. If Motoyasu kept his towering six foot tall form, then the anime version of Naofumi looks to stand a full five foot, ten inches, nearly a full eighteen centimeters tall than his book counterpart. Seriously, it looks to me like the show version of Naofumi towers over Ren, the sword hero, and Itsuki, the bow hero, almost as much as Motoyasu, the previously mentioned spear hero.
It kind of blew me away when I realized he had been living a delusion for about 3 or so episodes since he was betrayed...it made me understand why he made some of the comments he made.
Wait. If Naofumi has the Shield of *Wrath* Ren has the Swords of *Greed* and *Gluttony* Itsuki has the bow of *Pride* And Motayasu has the spears of *Lust* and *Envy* Then, where's Sloth? -My brain trembles-
There is one individual introduced much later on who could be considered even more loyal than Raphtalia. Spoiler below... Atla is her name, she becomes so devoted to Naofumi that she essentially takes his word as law and supports him in any decision or action he makes even if it is clearly not a good one, unlike Raphtalia who will confront and even fight against him to bring him back to his senses in a certain situation much farther down the line.
I like the casting of Kaito Ishikawa as Naofumi. We already know he can act different roles, from the serious Genos to the straight-laced Tenya. Naofumi is a lot more bitter and cynical than the two roles I mentioned, but he certainly nailed the frustration and bitterness associated with the character. I am willing to bet casting Asami Seto as Raphtalia was intentional, since these two have brilliant chemistry for some reason, both on and off the screen.
Fun fact!! When Naofumi used blood sacrifice the queen was pissed at the king because Naofumi was injured in the fight. Naofumi in the manga had a 30% debuff on all of his attributes besides defense when fighting glass.

Yeah I fall on the shorter end of the stick. I'm 159cm barely hit 160cm and most guys and girls are taller than me which sucks coz I'm a guy and most girl are taller than me. Strength wise I'd say I'm quite on par as someone with 165cm due to my Stout stature I guess. I'm maybe small but I still has man's strength that's for sure.
3:50 From what I know, Naofumi can ONLY use Iron Maden when Curse shield is active. The Curse Shield is related to seven deadly sins, is activated when Naofumi pushed past his boiling point and is under effect of Wrath. This state increases his powers and gives him an unusual shield, but heavily degrades his stats after use. Also Blood Sacrifice is the same. But it's not the abilities that degrade his stats, it's the Curse Series as a state.
The Curse Series itself does not degrade stats, it actually grants pretty massive stats. It degrades the mental state as it tries to wrest control from the user to turn them into the embodiment of the Curse. Blood Sacrifice (Wrath) and Strong Decline (Gluttony) are the only ones that degrade stats from use. With Blood Sacrifice being the one that reduces stats by 30%, with Strong Decline costing 10 levels on use and locking out XP gain for a period of time.
Not while Curse Series is IN EFFECT. When it passes - it lowers his stats quite a bit. Not to mention, I only count a Curse Series in use if he uses a skill, based on it. His first simple unlock does nothing, but changes his world view. Also, that was not my main point. It was that specific skills can ONLY be used WHILE in Curse mode, and after it passes, his stats are lowered for a time. Namely, he cannot use Iron Maiden OR Blood Sacrifice when he's NOT enraged.

id like to point out that only naofumi thinks here mental state is still that of a young child at this point as the others have realized she is far more mature then naofumi at this point. in fact the only reason raftailia thought she hadn't matured mentally was because she was comparing herself to naofumi who at the time was very very broken and acting like a child.

I just wanted to say that Naofumi's "densness" stems to 95% from the trauma he received during the betrayal. A woman liking him that way doesn't work in his mind without her also being a backstabbing bitch, thus the only way for him to see Raphtalia in a good light is to deny any and all hints and signs that she might like him in a romatic way. If Raphtalia were to just straight up confess to Naofumi he would problably play it of as some kind of joke. Also merely entertaining the thought, that Raphtalia might like him that way makes him remember Malty wich majorly pisses
him off. So Naofumi being "dense" is less him being dense and more a psycological protective mecanism to not become mad of rage.

Just to exemplify just how bad his trauma is he would wake up in the middel of the night of fear of being robbed in the presence of a female, very much how one might be conditioned to waking up a few minutes befor the alarm goes of or waking up around that time despite no alarm being set, and Raphtalia is no exeption up until some time after the events of the third wave.
Also, there is an event in the webnovel were due to some circumstance Naofumi loses all his hatred for Malty, the king and the people of this world. In this state Naofumi was very much aware of the romantic fellings of his female companions and of his own feelings, but his companions found him creepy in that state and made him absorb all his anger back.
I agree that his denseness of Ralphtaila feelings is more psychological than him being well dumb.

A lot of Japanese voice actors have relationships working like this, it makes the most sense to have actors who know each other to work together, than two complete strangers. It also saves the company a lot of money due to less sessions and shorter time spent recording.

The anime makes him a bit tame but he is an asshole with more hatred in the novel, it gives more depth to the "Raphtalia pulling him back" moments throughout the series imo(still emotional in the anime, but less impactful).
Im noticing a lot of anime just leaving out things adding there own ideas designs actions and words that would change the story alot or a little or characters like one main reason i like him as a character was because he was down right evil to moat people and a asshole even his eyes in the manga says he gives no fucks and the anime taming all that down rubs me the wrong way

something important about the abilities is that some of those the iron maiden and the blood sacrifice are actually part of the curse series, the wrath shield. Each legendary weapon can unlock these types of the 7 deadly sins but its due to emotions feeling enough envy or greed or lust will unlock those forms and those will show up on the other heroes. But the other thing is that the wrath shield has a counter attack flame that burn his enemies with cursed fire and leaves a curse on them. Its very strong but he starts loosing to his rage when hes got it active as do all curse series weapons what ever the emotion its up to 11 with these, using its ultimate attack also has consequnces like greed devalues your drops from good stuff to worth less junk as well as your gear to barely intact garbage. The other thing is that he also has more than just those for abilities his greatest asset is the shields passives. Due to him unlocking numerous shields the bonuses stack so he keeps getting stronger, plus the passive do the same the slave user shield and monster user shield increase the growth of slaves and monsters under his control. Which is why his two companions in the next wave will be so powerful that they out shine even the heroes. In this world levels are not as important as your overall stats some one who is higher level might have lower stats like in ep 6 the person they were fighting was over 30 -and had a job extension choosing a more advance path of growth, but they beat him because those 2 had much better stats. Also his passives increase healing items he uses so anything he gives to some one -administers, will dramatically boost making it far more effective.
As for his love life he knows some girls will like him but he just is so traumitized by the bitch that he just can't do that right now.
Also this is from the web novel so it may not be in the anime or light novel but the bow hero is from a world with espers, his own being one that makes it so he is a much better shot, its fairly weak as there is one that makes you never miss. But when he reveals this to them he theorizes that the shield hero also has 2 esper powers, the first is that he is immune to negitive statues effects such getting drunk, sea sickness, ect i think it includes poison but im not totally sure of all poison working on him, he can eat a fruit thats concentrated booze and feel nothing, they usually drop one into a barrel and using to make a keg. he eats them one after another, it also has the bonus of restoring sp to max but the other heroes can't do this. The second is animal friendship, which is another reason the shield choose him. Its also why a lot of his party are demi humans and the girls all want him, their mostly demi humans including raphtallia, and a killer whale woman and a white tiger girl, both look like normal women except for some small things. But he has basically a bonus when dealing with them.
There's actually some mistakes the anime made. Like the Naofumi being able to hurl air strike shield. Air strike shield is suppose to be a static shield. The only way he can use them offensively is blocking an enemy's retreat to prevent them from dodging his allies' attacks.
@@jonathan4554 I wouldn't say that's necessarily a mistake, the creative liberties taken on the abilities of ASS (lol) is definitely much more engaging in an animated setting. And based on the light novel, ASS is actually able to move, as *SPOILERS* he uses it as an aerial platform that is dragged through the air to land safely while he was in Glass's world.
true plus it was early when he wrote that so it does help make the fight look better as he is using everything he has to win but the spear hero only uses his flashy moves that are all preset no imagination just using the skills as is.

I love this Story and am looking forward to seeing more, the highlight of the Story for me in the Queen. She’s awesome, beautiful, brutal, smart and actually a help to the Main Character. Actually he only pushed Raphtalia to get over her fears. When facing the two headed cerberus, he tried to force her to attack in order to survive, but also to conquer her fears. He explains to her the reason why he needs her. The main reason is because he could not pick up a sword and attack, so he needed her to attack. The problem she was still resisting and he told her to run, since she would not attack. He would not force her if she could not help him. So, she decides to attack when he needs her to. She always viewed him as a parent or friend at the beginning, since he was supporting her and nice to her.

Interestingly enough I think what people miss about Naofumi and how he sees Raphtalia as a kid not an adult is based on his broken mental image, and is dealt with after his duel with Motoyasu. We see his actual mental image and thoughts and how badly they were broken by Mynes betrayal. Remember he cant taste anything and when he sees them free Raphtalia he only sees her as a child not as she currently is.
His mental image of things is so shaken and broken that its warped, and he doesn't even hear her saying she will fight by his side forever.
So when he finally comes too as Raphtalia pulls him back after the duel. He asks her, who are you? because he literaly Does not recognize her new form since mentally he only ever saw her as the same pip squeak. this is even shown when the Blackmsith calls her a little lady and Naofumis response is huh? We see though after the duel that he can taste things again because of the hope Raphtalia brought to him
The fact that Naofumi is oblivious to Raphtalia's advances are untrue he know about them but he does not act apon it. Hes know about them sent's she was set free from the slave crest the first time. i will not spoil much but he does eventually warm up to her. if people wanna know more your free to ask i have read the manga and in the process of the light novel and i will forward any info you want to know through private messages. not to spoil what others dont wanna know. :)

Iron maiden is actually a skill who's prerequisites are shield prison and change shield attack. After both those conditions are met, an actual iron maiden is summoned to crush the shield prison.

Honestly, Raftalia is in full an analog for what Malty lost when she betrayed Naofumi. She was chosen because of his hatred of Malty, and received the care and ultimately the affection Malty abandoned upon betraying him.

I think that the anime version of Naofumi is significantly taller than his book version, as he looks to be only two or three inches shorter than Motoyasu, the spear hero. If Motoyasu kept his towering six foot tall form, then the anime version of Naofumi looks to stand a full five foot, ten inches, nearly a full eighteen centimeters tall than his book counterpart. Seriously, it looks to me like the show version of Naofumi towers over Ren, the sword hero, and Itsuki, the bow hero, almost as much as Motoyasu, the previously mentioned spear hero.
There's no way he's 5'3. He's got to be around 5'7-5'10.

Atla is her name, she becomes so devoted to Naofumi that she essentially takes his word as law and supports him in any decision or action he makes even if it is clearly not a good one, unlike Raphtalia who will confront and even fight against him to bring him back to his senses in a certain situation much farther down the line.

I like the casting of Kaito Ishikawa as Naofumi. We already know he can act different roles, from the serious Genos to the straight-laced Tenya. Naofumi is a lot more bitter and cynical than the two roles I mentioned, but he certainly nailed the frustration and bitterness associated with the character. I am willing to bet casting Asami Seto as Raphtalia was intentional, since these two have brilliant chemistry for some reason, both on and off the screen.

Fun fact!! When Naofumi used blood sacrifice the queen was pissed at the king because Naofumi was injured in the fight. Naofumi in the manga had a 30% debuff on all of his attributes besides defense when fighting glass.

Yeah I fall on the shorter end of the stick. I'm 159cm barely hit 160cm and most guys and girls are taller than me which sucks coz I'm a guy and most girl are taller than me. Strength wise I'd say I'm quite on par as someone with 165cm due to my Stout stature I guess. I'm maybe small but I still has man's strength that's for sure.

3:50 From what I know, Naofumi can ONLY use Iron Maden when Curse shield is active. The Curse Shield is related to seven deadly sins, is activated when Naofumi pushed past his boiling point and is under effect of Wrath. This state increases his powers and gives him an unusual shield, but heavily degrades his stats after use.
Also Blood Sacrifice is the same.
But it's not the abilities that degrade his stats, it's the Curse Series as a state.
The Curse Series itself does not degrade stats, it actually grants pretty massive stats. It degrades the mental state as it tries to wrest control from the user to turn them into the embodiment of the Curse. Blood Sacrifice (Wrath) and Strong Decline (Gluttony) are the only ones that degrade stats from use. With Blood Sacrifice being the one that reduces stats by 30%, with Strong Decline costing 10 levels on use and locking out XP gain for a period of time.
Not while Curse Series is IN EFFECT. When it passes - it lowers his stats quite a bit. Not to mention, I only count a Curse Series in use if he uses a skill, based on it. His first simple unlock does nothing, but changes his world view.
Also, that was not my main point. It was that specific skills can ONLY be used WHILE in Curse mode, and after it passes, his stats are lowered for a time. Namely, he cannot use Iron Maiden OR Blood Sacrifice when he's NOT enraged.
@@Plusle843 for Iron maiden and Blood sacrifice he needs to have fueled the shield with enough rage to use the skills for it to turn from Curse shield to Rage then to Wrath (he needs the Rage shield to use Iron maiden and the Wrath shield for Blood sacrifice)and he can use the 2 hate series shields after the shield itself absorbs enough hate from him
