I think you missed one category. "The O.G." - The fans who have been around since the 80s/90s and seen the rise of anime outside Japan, the rise (and fall) of Fansubs, and the pain that was waiting for releases on VHS/Laserdisc/DVD to be released in Japan, months after the show ends its broadcast. Or waiting for a company to make a sub/dub. And buy them at 2/4 eps per tape/disc for entire seasons. These people were the reason that Anime is as huge as it is today outside Japan, and often have boxes of DVDs, VHS, box sets, and merch from shows before a lot of the current audience was born. This is the sort of person who sees the new Ranma 1/2 and says "I should pull my VHS tapes out of storage to watch again". Often a sub-set of the Otaku. Then there is William Chow (www.youtube.com/@WilliamChow), the OG of the OGs. Owned/ran an anime rental store in the 90s-00s, and is a walking history book of where the fandom came from.
I think we get grandfathered into the Hipster category. We literally were watching anime before it was popular, and a lot of those niche shows are just old shows we saw when there weren't 200 new shows every season
It feels great to find other people who remember the fansubbing era. Connecting with others who were there before it became more easily accessible is a wonderful feeling these days, because there are so many people who are unaware of what it used to be like.
I wasn't around back then, I got into Anime back in 2012 but since like 2018 I pretty much only watch those old 90s and 80s shows and gradually discover parts of the older Anime community. I've heard something people refer to it as "Anime archeology"
I think I qualify in a lot of these, but not enough to say I'm one over the other. Anime is too much of a wild ride across a staggering variety of topics and genres to really want to try and limit myself to one.
I knew aqua gonna die at the end dont know why the second i see aqua and ruby shippers winning i was like author can't let that happen so best way to end shipping kill aqua.
I appreciate that you have something positive to say about every type and explain how they contribute to the propagation of the genre. There are so many divisions and arguments between us (especially regarding the internecine "dub vs. sub" debate) that it's easy to forget that we all fundamentally like the same thing.
yess this video was unexpectedly wholesome and it's great to hear the positive sides of every "group" within the fandom partially because there are so many negative stereotypes
Yeah, I kinda forget just how fanservicey kill la kill is, mostly just because they sexualize EVERYONE to the point where it’s more than just fan-service, it’s just the theme of the show, and it’s actually quite a well written in theme too!
I'm very much a shonen anime fan. I'm not ashamed to admit that every time a character comes up with a cool move or something flashy I go "WHOOOOA" and then pester everyone around me about how awesome it was.
I also love finding forgotten, animes TV series OVA’s, and following modern anime as well not just the big new shows. I have a lot of different anime interests in different genres, but primarily action and adventures sci-fi Mac romance mystery harem. And many more. i’m also a big fan service fan so
The Casual Viewer 0:27 The Hardcore Otaku 1:27 The Shipper 2:37 The Shonen Lover 3:41 The Memer 4:49 The Fandom Intellectual 5:42 The Romance Enthusiasts 6:49 The WEEABOO 8:02 The Degenerate 9:16 The Wifu Fan 10:56 The Sub vs Dub Debater 12:17 The Anime Hipster 13:26 The Manga Pureist 14:47
I haven't even watched 30 seconds yet and I know I'm a shipper, but the realistic shipper, I rarely ship two characters that aren't even attract to each other (looking at you MHA shippers) or have even a chance to be together in the first place. Edit 6:51 : I also fall into the romance enthousiast category.
I honestly don't mind fan service as long as it's tasteful and not using sexual harassment played off as fan service. This dub and sub-debate needs to end! As an anime fan, I'm a mixture of shonen lover, degen and slice-of-life enjoyer. Also, I'm learning Japanese but only at a beginner level.
I've enjoyed the Seinen anime a little bit more than the Shonen shows. Even as a teenager, the more psychological and deeper philosophical themes expressed in many of those shows were more interesting and kept me watching long after I got bored of many shonen shows.
That's not seinen, that's just a fake seinen stereotype. Seinen can go from Needless to Tokyo Ghoul, Kaguya-sama, etc. While on the other hand we have works plenty thought provoking like Zetsubou-sensei which are shounen... Or Simoun, which is technically shoujo. Seinen is just a demography for works published in magazine typically for older audience, but the styles and themes can be broad. I mean, do you know all those cute girls doing cute things animes like K-ON? Well, those seinen. Also, try shoujo manga. There's VERY avant-garde stuff right there.
7:41 in that vein, kaguya-sama is absolute autistic representation (shirogone is literally me Fr Fr) please watch it if you want a bit of insight on what’s going on in our heads. Yes I would absolutely come up with elaborate schemes like that, or instead be entirely unknowing, I have actually lost one crush I had because I didn’t pick up on the fact they didn’t really care for labels. The biggest thing I learned from that, and the show is that the only way for something to get going and keep going is open and honest communication. Actually that’s the lesson I always seem to find when these romance animes come around (it’s almost like it’s important!)
On fanservice: As a femme who has carted around a large bust for a couple decades, fanservice usually doesn't bother me too much, unless the "boob-physics" get too weird. If it looks painful, well... it's about like why guys don't like watching a dude get kicked in the junk. Having lived with that equipment and knowing what that would actually feel like... nope, that's an ouch. Going down a basic flight of stairs without any support is painful when you're carrying J's. You don't want to jumping jacks without a good supportive bra.
Watching a certain anime meme and then dive entirely in the anime itself it's so real. Btw: I'm the intellectual, kinda romantic, and I'm in the middle of casual and otaku, closer to casual. And of course waifu fan.
You forgot the "I've been watching anime since Gigantor, I must be too old to watch anime now, but damn, it looks and sounds so amazing how can I even stop" fans. 😅😅😅
Yeah, they forgot the boomer category. Those who have been watching anime for a long time and often prefer the older anime over the new and thinks anime isn't like what it was or as good as the good old days.
I'm mostly the "Casual" type dominant with "Romantic" second, followed by "Intellectual" and "Shipper" tied in third, and finally "Manga Purist" and "Dub vs Sub" with tiny elements of the other categories. I'm sure there are more Anime Indominus Rexes out there who are better than me?
I'm definitely a Otaku When it comes to those 13 categories. I love a good anime Watch, Ether sub or dub. I say at the end of the day, we're all big enemy fans. It doesn't matter which category you're in. and it always amazes me how the world of anime is just evolving and affecting multiple people in different ways.
Well… using timestamps, I qualify more for Otaku (1:29), Shipper (2:38), Intellectual (5:43), Romantic (6:50), Waifu Fan (10:59), and sort of Hipster (13:31), though not really old-time anime, but modern hidden gem hunter.
I consider myself the escapist type. I've dabbled with other traits but I'm really just watching anime in search of the next good show that let's me forget about the problems in the real world and puts that feeling in your heart when you finish it.
Hmm interesting I can see your personal bias via this video as there were a few places where you refused to comment on the downside of of one of your fan types. Personally I think this whole type debate is useless as almost no one is purely any single type but a mix of several but I get what you were going for. Very entertaining video.
I‘m like a mix of many of these categories but there‘s probably another category or side-category which is a big part of my appreciation for anime because I love the music of many animes and I love it to watch or listen to openings, endings and osts. Many of my favorite songs are from anime. But apart from that I‘m mainly just a normal fan that is hyped over every good anime and is watching most of the time animes that are mainstream right now or that I get recommended from somewhere.
Same. Whenever I start a new anime, I try to find the OP and ED on itunes (if I like them of course). Unfortunately, there are many times where I can’t find the song and sometimes the song is an absolute banger, but for whatever reason it is impossible to find anywhere other than RUclips.
Im happy to be a proud intellectual. Learning allot about lore writing. For me there is nothing better to see an anime where realism and science gets thrown together and where the characters act like real ones would. Some goofy moments are also welcomed for me, that is one of the core points of anime after all^^
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel I love this video and channel Thanks you for your video and channel I love manga and anime all franchise
I’m still casual, but definitely the intellectual type. I was bingeing Bleach:TYBW when I realized there was a whole preceding series. Only, once I started that, I got frustrated with the dialogue. I was hanging around because I like story lines and Bleach is definitely complex weaving. But the over the top transitions were getting stale while the dialogue was a slog. As a naive whim, I decided to check out Kill La Kill. I knew it was a rough series for those not that familiar with tropes and genre mainstays, but reviews suggested there was intellectual rewards. Married and 57yo, I’m not into the fan service but KLK took it so far around the bend, they squeezed very literal art of it! Reviewers said the fan service would just be normalized along your way through the series. But what I appreciated was making that nakedness not only central to the plot, but that accepting the nakedness was actually growth and maturity. The only disturbing scenes were with the big baddie, but I felt they were trying to emphasize the monstrous nature of this character. I shocked my brother by recommending this show, but only because it’s anime. I’m a fan of any art I can relate to that is well done. I’m just as into subtitles on a German drama. For me, sub vs dub is all about the talent and production. I saw Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in the theater(2x) with subs on the screen. The actors emoted while I read. When the dub came out on DVD, it was like scratching the chalkboard. I was very pleased with dub on KLK, but having heard the original in review videos, I’ll probably rewatch in subs. Viva la choice! I’m not gonna be one of those Japanese conversions, but I do enjoy finding commonality as well as diversity. I know it’s not one to one representation of Japanese life, but it carries strong tendencies of actual life. Just like Peter Griffin is not a typical American, you get clues about what is. I grew up when the only Anime available in Texas was Speed Racer. So everything that came after, in my childhood, just seemed like a copycat of SR. It was when I saw the live action movie that I came to understand how much fantasy is wrapped up in Anime. I loved the movie, no matter its actual value as a movie, just because it opened my eyes to storytelling aspects I’d never seen before. I didn’t start watching as a habit, but did watch Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and a few other classics. I’m a big fan of Archer and many other adult animations in the West, but when I ran into Cowboy Bebop, I fell in love the fact that the opening theme inspired Archer so heavily. CB also has fun, twisty stories. Trigun has got to be one of my faves when it comes to heroic resolve, IN ANY GENRE! This is Captain America territory. As an aside, I can’t sit through X-Men animated. It’s almost as laborious as Clone wars! But I also study the shell of the genre, and that’s where videos like yours are so much fun. It’s not necessary for fans to get sorted into different houses, I mean categories, but talking about it is fun enough to justify the indulgence. I don’t know about Kill La Kill saving anime, but I do know I enjoyed the hell out of one smart show! Hunting such treasures is part of the fun. Too bad there aren’t millions of videos and posts from fans telling me what to watch next….oh…wait….
I think a good entry would have been cozy/wholesome anime enjoyers. Thous that enjoy the calming atmosphere and light hearted moments. These anime fans loves everything Studio Ghibli and will probably look through the archive of slice of life anime archives.
Well, I could say that I am a mixture of all the above, although i rather fall in to the category of intellectuals that have never actually watched the anime. I could list you everything about an anime that I didn't even watch.. (That's how i accidentally spoiled the entirety of Cowboy Bebop to my friend)
You are missing the most important community. The AMV creator and watcher community. AMV's brought so many to anime and was the way I discovered shows for quite some time. Often the AMV is a better experience than the anime itself. Not to mention the extra level of creativity and art.
I would say hipster I definitely watch both sub and dub and the debate over which is better anime or manga. They’re two sides of the same coin. Anime and manga are two separate mediums. There are pros and cons to both mediums and there are limitations on what they bring to the table and I enjoy them both.
5:28 that was indeed me, I only stopped because part 6 wasn’t on Tubi and pirating things is hard, I can definitely do it, but that loss of comfort and the way most jojo fans don’t really like it anyway… would probably go read the manga instead if I hadn’t already gotten part-way into the part
Idk what category I fall under, I just know I love Ranma 1/2 (Netflix Remake) for the romance mixed with slapstick comedy and action. AND THE ANIMATION IS AMAZING
318 anime, 14063 episodes, been watching anime for about 27 years now, since the mid-90s. I have my animeplanet profile constantly open in my browser, since it gets updated semi-daily. That said, I have no anime merch in my room nor would I consider myself a hardcore otaku, just an otaku. A lot of these match a part of me, but none of them seem to quite fit me... 10:57 DAMMIT! >.> In my defense, anime waifus are the modern equivalent of animism! I claim an unbroken spiritual lineage dating back to our earliest spiritual moments, when man first saw a woman-shaped cloud and though _'would'!_ More seriously, only four of these archetypes don't fit me at all (casual, memer, shipper, and purist), while every other one fits a part of my anime-diet, to a lesser or greater extent. Perhaps an archetype was left out: _the oldtaku_ - a grizzled anime veteran that's been watching anime longer than most fans have been alive and has seen all kinds of anime, both mainstream and obscure several times over. Still keeps up with some seasonal shows, probably has multiple waifus, watches both sub & dub (sometimes both for the same show), understands a fair bit of Japanese, is familiar with Japanese culture, and reads not only manga but also manhwa if they strike his fancy.
I’m the kind of anime fan that watched it as a child then rediscovered it as an adult when introducing my own child to Pokemon and stumbling across everything I missed in the past 15-20 years and absolutely loving it! But I’m not interested in any merchandise or conventions (the creepy type of anime fans etc. make me uncomfortable) so I also tend not into interact with any other fans and just just enjoy it by myself so no one can ruin it for me. Anyone else? 😅
Id rather fully understand what im watching the first time rather then rewinding constantly to read the subs i missed and then again to rewatch the scene after getting the context and wanting to see what actually happened since my eyes were glued to the bottom of the screen to read
Some of the commenters definitely pointed out big gaps in this list. I definitely count myself as a hybrid of like parts of half the categories and several not mentioned. I don’t know if there is such a category, but I’d call myself a smorgasborder where I watch at least 6 series a season and try to only continue to watch maybe one long-running shōnen a season (if that). The only thing I don’t really watch are kodomo (little kids’) shows.
Personally, I lean towards the casual, intellectual, and hipster categories (and a little bit of a purist). If I find an anime that catches my interest, I like to examine it as a whole. The plot, storytelling, worldbuilding, directive and stuff like that, even something like the change in openings and endings as the series progresses. Though I usually just do it as some extra fun stuff to think about as I watch the series, not really diving too deep. I don't care so much if an anime is mainstream or not, only if it would be enjoyable for me. I also prefer if the anime is adapting the original source material as faithfully as possible, and that extends a bit to my opinion on the dub vs sub argument where I think the original language the story was made for would be best, still I don't care too much as long as it is enjoyable. On a side note, I really hate fan-service in general and I would go out of my way to avoid watching series with excessive amounts of them, but I can tolerate some spicy scenes since if you exclude every anime that has any amount of fan-service you really won't be left with much lol
I used to watch old School anime while waiting for the school bus, have a collection of favorites on Netflix, recently added Mononoke Phantom in the rain
I'm a proud Intellectual anime fan-- I'm an expert when it comes to the Ghost in the Shell franchise, and I've got some connections to the people who made the animes.
I'm not sure where I fit, perhaps the meme one? Or maybe the romance enthusiast one? I honestly just like watching slice of life and sometimes shoujo, I like listening to some of those anime-song remix thingies, maybe I'm just a casual viewer lol, or maybe not? I'm probably in the minority that doesn’t fall into any of these *(unfortunate, I was looking forward to being described by 100% accuracy)*
I'm a different category..... I'm the Japanophile.... Otaku but also now living in Japan, levelling up Japanese, and into everything Japanese (interested in music, history, language, culture, ppl, calligraphy and Japanese novels).
I'm definitely the "Anime hipster". I started out watching Anime back in 2012 but since around 2018 I started watching more and more retro Anime. Generally I don't care when something was made but I've come to find the older stuff more often seem to align with my tastes. I've heard from an anime director that they pretty much greenlit anything back then whilst now they do what they know will sell (hence all these isakais). Also a lot of them took inspiration from American media of the time so there's a lot of matcho action stuff with cars and guns and stuff. It's not just a bunch of teenagers running around casting spells on each other and screaming about friendship or getting flustered (people sometimes call this MANime). A big plus of pretty much everything getting greenlght is that you're more likely to find something that hits a lot of your niches, not just the same crap regurgutated over and over like we get now a days. Also a big reason I watch older shows is because they often have better animation, less corner cutting like CGI or digital composting effect spam and way more original ideas due to the Japanese bubble economy of the time allowing for all those things. Its also fun getting to discover what the culture was like back then and you sometimes get to see the birth of our modern tropes and their origins. Like now a days people consider things like chainsaw man or demon slayer to have exceptional animation but that's mostly because of how low the bar has sunken with all these studios just pumping out slopp trying to make a quick buck. Like 90% of all the OVAs from the late 80s early 90s had animation like those shows and handdrawn at that. Old vehicle animation especially is insane (go look at the 1995 stink bomb chase scene or the 1993 gunsmith cats car chase). Sure we have OVAs now a days as well but they rarely improve on the animation quality, they often just look like a 13th episode of the show with maybe some slightly more aggressive fanservice.
I strongly agree with you on the Fact that, Newbies think, Their Anime was the first to be that unique, ...When literally All the Old Anime had what that and also much more original stuff The new Manga's can't even compare to how sane and Good the old serie were. As much i love Chainsaw-man & Dislike DanDaDan😅, i know they r good but definitely not the Greats we have had before... and Having insane plots and a mix of tons of Spices doesn't make it a best dish. Infact big 3 are the only ones which truly hold credibility to this day as completely Original works... while improvising troops of their predecessors
It's about the sub/dub debate segment when I realized 'oh, you have to choose several of these'. I'm running most of these, but primarily we're talking 'no mainstream shit, ecchi mandatory, subbed, specifically fansubbed, no gruesome shit, no censorship, no killing waifus, kids or pets' so it's understandably slim-pickings these days as all the tourists rage over their fighting anime and insult ecchi, isekai, school anime and others because that's the new bandwagon. Interesting to see that Otaku and Weaboo are not synonyms in this video, I just figured one was the Japanese name for it, whilst the other was the meme name for it.
I would call myself a Casual Hipster. I'm not going really deep into the anime series I like and mostly I'm watching the anime without the original source. I started to go for unknown anime this year and it makes fun to watch obscure titles and find something really good. Hanada Shounen-shi and Fancy Lala are two titles I would like to recommend in this case.
I guess the impressive part about watching every anime from 83 would be the availability of the anime, since many older anime never got an official release outside of Japan or haven’t gotten an official release since it was dubbed back then. But pirating is a thing so that does make it significantly easier to do now.
While pure romance is either boring or too emotional or whatever that is, romcom is pretty cool. I like the comedy element kinda just mixed in with the flow, so idk if its romantic or maybe something else. And I'm talking about anime's like Kaguya sama and Takagi san. They're animes which are pretty long(compared to most other romance animes) with close to no development but every episode is really enjoyable and fun.
Yeah, Kaguya is just a plain good time. Lots of laughs and great character development. Yes, you feel some frustration with Kaguya and Shirogane, but at the same time the situations they get themselves into and the mind games they play are so hilarious that it more than makes up for the slow development. I haven’t watched Tagaki-san, but I do have it on the watchlist.
15:59 "... Their clashes got so heated that Anno quit in protest halfway through and Tsuda walked away, refusing to finish the anime's story and leaving it on a weird cliffhanger." That's an interesting spin. I thought (based on some special feature on the DVD) that they finished the season (as in the number of episodes they were supposed to make) and even caught up to where the manga was at that time. Maybe I misinterpreted, misremembered, or was misled, though. Anyway, my point is, how can they blame it on Anno quitting? Are they saying if they could have continued after the first season with no money and no more manga? (I guess "Tsuda left" might mean something about the manga side, but manga is often written slower than anime, probably because it's fewer people making it, and I know she eventually finished it. Did she take away their adaptation rights or something?) They did mention the budgetary issues, at least, and I'm aware asking RUclips is not the way to answer my questions. I was just expressing my surprise at this narrative, though I had heard the mangaka didn't like the anine for focusing on comedy over romance. "Not helping were outside factors and producer's intrusive demands and Anno's and Gainax's budgetary issues. The latter hampered production so much that the anime's last few episodes were clip shows made if recycled footage, unfinished art, paper puppets, and manga scans with some voiceovers thrown in."
I fall in the "hipster" category but I'm picking when watching older anime from the 90s back. I've seen the classics of many decades and still want to view ones that I might have missed.
Then there’s me: - Obsessed with guess the anime videos on youtube - Knows the majority of well known anime, but specifically only the openings - Watches anime openings more than actual anime - Bases whether or not to watch the anime off the opening - Will watch pretty much any genre of anime as long as it’s not a harem (and the opening is interesting)
I normally don't have a problem with a fellow Anime fan except for casual Sub vs Dub conflict or Anime not faithful to the source material. If a person is not my type is mainly because they are not an Anime fan, don't watch Anime at all, either ignorant or refuses to watch Anime, or would try to judge or demonize me for being an Anime fan
Firstly, I would say I'm an otaku even though I've only been watching anime for 18 months. Nowadays anime have become my source of life and I seem to can't live without it😅 Secondly, I'm an shipper, a BIG one at that. Take TQQ for example. Till this day I still think Miku is the best choice for Futaro. Do anything you want, but I willl defend it till the day I die❤ Third, I'm a SUPER DUPER enthusiastic romance anime fan. Every season I will find at least 5 of them to watch and sometimes I would binge peak romance as well. At the end of the day, I admit I just want a lover and I'm slowly becoming a love expert thanks to them😊 Fourth, I can't say I'm a big weeaboo, I just blend in some Japanese almost every time I talk since I started watching anime. It's natural to the point I'm starting to feel like I dug too deep into anime that might mess up my life in the real world😭 Fifth, yes, I'm a degenerate, so what? I'm ALWAYS hyped whether there's a beach episode and I LOVE the fan service in anime 😎 it just feels so...... good, iykyk😂 Sixth, I'm proud to say, that I'm a MASSIVE waifu fan. Every. Single. Show. I would find my waifu and just appreciate how they blessed my free time with their performance in every episode, and I can confidently say, that I would write a whole essay about a certain waifu better than my English essay🤣 Finally, the other that I didn't mention is not that relatable imo but I would keep it brief here: I sometimes watch shonen anime, I prefer sub over dub, I'm definitely not a casual, memers make the community alive, I maybe would watch some underrated gems, I would appreciate the ones that goes into details on anime, and I would also defend my favourite manga at all times. All in all, I LOVE ANIME and I would watch anime until the day I pass away. Peace✌️
Oh, and another thing, I would buy the mangas and light novels of the series I like and I would want to decorate my room as a true otaku in the near future since I'm a student myself😅
I'm not gonna debate sub vs dub but it is an interesting conversation because making a good dub is a very difficult thing to do, the reason the debate is so intense is because the older dubs just didn't put in effort, but that's becoming less and less common, the only reason why sub would always be superior would be if you actually understand Japanese and all the things that can't get translated
I think im a bit of a mix between otaku and intellectual I have some anime merchandise but its also not the source of my entire wallet I also love listening to video essays and reviews on anime and exploring different perspectives and deeply sharing opinions on individual characters from like a dozen different anime simultaneously
Missed a important type of fan one that has learned Japanese who can both read manga directly and watch anime without subs. Only way you can really call yourself a fan because the language itself is a critical part of the story. Not to mention all the countless example of bad translation like the jelly donuts in Pokémon for instance
Or the Pokemon saying their names in dubs. I am half Japanese and grew up watching Diamond & Pearl and Best Wishes in Japanese so I was really confused when my non-japanese peers and RUclipsrs reference "Talking like a Pokemon" until I saw clips from dubs. In Japanese they don't say their name outright but rather a cry that incorperates parts of the name or just a generic animal cry. So Pikachu says Begabega, Pochama says Pacha, pacha, and Hogeta says Honge, Honge. But if it were like the English version they would say Pikachu, Pikachu, Pochama, Pochama and Hogeta, Hogeta, which just sounds very strange and, which is why English fans point it out. I understand that that has it's own cham now as a common cultural experience but the original translaters messed that one up.
I think most people are going to be a mix of these categories. I collect some figures, I prefer dub, I like some shipping, and I can't get into some shonen but love some old school stuff. I also have a Rei Ayanami tattoo
I’m into dubbed subbed anime (depending on the title), shonen anime, I admire the beauty and personalities of my favorite Waifus, fan service is better than drugs, I’m more in love with 2D waifus (but I don’t go too far), and I read the manga after one season is complete and not getting a second season anytime soon.
Title: what type of anime fan are you First scene: a guy holding what seems a body pillow of Kurumi (or something similar). Me: yep, that's absolutely me, well done
Ohh wow, I really like anime and watch over 100 different animes per year but I'm not that aggressive about it, I have almost 0 anime related things in my room except for 1 anime book (also is that "Date A Live" I see?)
I'm most of above but RN I'm just floating on by in the Waifu Fan I have done some cosplaying (Makoto Itou, Ganta Nakami, Shinji Ikari all fairly easy and versatile cosplays for my appearance since I like to do those during an outdoors Halloween event and weather can be anything in October) I have done some shipping (Mainly over shared backgrounds like Sayu Orgiwara and Saki Yoshida) Have watched and rewatched cultured stuff (World's End Harem leading me down the Sci-Fi drama rabbithole and being the reason I would eventually watch Vivy since that scratched the "Flaws of a certain concept" itch) But having these guys and girls that were also in these situations (Minami from Hokkaio Gals for simply having to also deal with a snowy winter) or helped people in said situations (Sakuta from Bunny Girl Senpai) is why I'm in that camp
The type that watches anime cause they enjoy the medium but hate being associated with its fanbase
😭🙏 real
Literally me
Yep, this is me. The closeted anime fan.
Fr,just because I like Konosuba and JoJo doesn't mean Im gay or pervert or whatever
Me: All of the above.
TALK YO STUFF TWIN 🗣️💯🔥
I like it 👌
Triplet me too😂
We all got a little bit of everything
The ultimate otaku
Connecting with others who were there before it became more easily accessible is a wonderful feeling these days, because there are so many people who are unaware of what it used to be like.
yes and we are dying ! make anime good again japan. not this mainstream stuff. but some new is ok but not as good as the old animes.
I wasn't around back then, I got into Anime back in 2012 but since like 2018 I pretty much only watch those old 90s and 80s shows and gradually discover parts of the older Anime community. I've heard something people refer to it as "Anime archeology"
I would watch more of the old animes but bleach one piece and Naruto are the only good plots in my opinion
I think I qualify in a lot of these, but not enough to say I'm one over the other. Anime is too much of a wild ride across a staggering variety of topics and genres to really want to try and limit myself to one.
I love the meme of Akane x Aqua Shippers fighting with Kana x Aqua shippers, meanwhile Akane x Kana shippers are just off on the side smirking. Lol.
What about Aqua and Ruby shippers
I think we are forgetting some back story there
@@Kingio695-jf3vv GET OU-
@@_Juanfraboy_No, no he’s got a point (jk)
I knew aqua gonna die at the end dont know why the second i see aqua and ruby shippers winning i was like author can't let that happen so best way to end shipping kill aqua.
I literally started shipping Akane and Kana as a middle finger to the other shippers fighting over Aqua lol
True
Yeah, I kinda forget just how fanservicey kill la kill is, mostly just because they sexualize EVERYONE to the point where it’s more than just fan-service, it’s just the theme of the show, and it’s actually quite a well written in theme too!
I'm very much a shonen anime fan. I'm not ashamed to admit that every time a character comes up with a cool move or something flashy I go "WHOOOOA" and then pester everyone around me about how awesome it was.
Am findin romance / ultra drama anime
Lungs need for exercise
5:47 thats me lmao and being the shipper plus this is just like look they hold hands in this one frame AAAAUGGG
I also love finding forgotten, animes TV series OVA’s, and following modern anime as well not just the big new shows. I have a lot of different anime interests in different genres, but primarily action and adventures sci-fi Mac romance mystery harem. And many more. i’m also a big fan service fan so

NAHHHHH, The fact I know all the anime you showed in this video including the anime in the Degenerate part and the body pillows are wild.💀💀💀💀
I probably qualify as "The Hipster". Which is a funny title that i'll now use to call myself.
Give me an example cuz I swear this is too good to be true nowadays 🙏😭
I'm the exact same, I almost never ship 2 characters that have no chance of getting together and I usually stick to romance anime
The type where I felt called out the most, is the memer. But not as one making it but one getting pulled into an anime by it.
2:51 DRAGON MAID MENTIONED RAGHHH 🗣️
On fanservice: As a femme who has carted around a large bust for a couple decades, fanservice usually doesn't bother me too much, unless the "boob-physics" get too weird. If it looks painful, well... it's about like why guys don't like watching a dude get kicked in the junk. Having lived with that equipment and knowing what that would actually feel like... nope, that's an ouch. Going down a basic flight of stairs without any support is painful when you're carrying J's. You don't want to jumping jacks without a good supportive bra.
I genuinely love Dr Stone I'd say I'm just dipping my feet into anime but I'm mostly hear for the memes
Dr Stone is such a god tier show
associating romance and shojo is limiting both the genre and the demographic. At least two of the romances you showed weren't even shojo.
Speak on it! 🗣️
4:16 before or during tests at school I listen to Erwin’s charge to hype myself up
Watching a certain anime meme and then dive entirely in the anime itself it's so real.
Btw: I'm the intellectual, kinda romantic, and I'm in the middle of casual and otaku, closer to casual. And of course waifu fan.
7:56 i watched some romance anime and it got to the point where i explain my friend stuff about his girlfriend even though i dont have one
This is one of most positive videos.
You forgot the "I've been watching anime since Gigantor, I must be too old to watch anime now, but damn, it looks and sounds so amazing how can I even stop" fans. 😅😅😅
❤
Sounds like the hipster category.
Yeah, they forgot the boomer category. Those who have been watching anime for a long time and often prefer the older anime over the new and thinks anime isn't like what it was or as good as the good old days.
I believe this is called Oldtaku. Which he missed.
I’d say I’m a slight hipster mixed with a seasonal viewer
I consider myself the escapist type. I've dabbled with other traits but I'm really just watching anime in search of the next good show that let's me forget about the problems in the real world and puts that feeling in your heart when you finish it.
Hmm interesting I can see your personal bias via this video as there were a few places where you refused to comment on the downside of of one of your fan types. Personally I think this whole type debate is useless as almost no one is purely any single type but a mix of several but I get what you were going for. Very entertaining video.
12:22 this clip reminds me of how well animated the fight was, i was pretty shocked when i first saw it
I‘m like a mix of many of these categories but there‘s probably another category or side-category which is a big part of my appreciation for anime because I love the music of many animes and I love it to watch or listen to openings, endings and osts.
Damn not even 30seconds im already called out :(
Def me: Shonen Lover, the memer and a quarter of the Hippster
Im happy to be a proud intellectual. Learning allot about lore writing. For me there is nothing better to see an anime where realism and science gets thrown together and where the characters act like real ones would. Some goofy moments are also welcomed for me, that is one of the core points of anime after all^^
I thought I was not going to be in any category but when I saw Lain Serial Experiments I knew he was talking about me
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
I love this video and channel
Thanks you for your video and channel
I love manga and anime all franchise
Who here saw the thumbnail, the heard how 95% of fans are in one catogory, and thought it was that one that started with a D and ending with a E?
And then there is me. Not a casual but just watching whatever I want and not going overboard. Zero merch but not a noob
I think a good entry would have been cozy/wholesome anime enjoyers. Thous that enjoy the calming atmosphere and light hearted moments. These anime fans loves everything Studio Ghibli and will probably look through the archive of slice of life anime archives.
Dandadan? You cant sneak that in without me noticing. I swear im not a degenerate
5:28 that was indeed me, I only stopped because part 6 wasn’t on Tubi and pirating things is hard, I can definitely do it, but that loss of comfort and the way most jojo fans don’t really like it anyway… would probably go read the manga instead if I hadn’t already gotten part-way into the part
im down bad but a vr dating sim is a whole different level
I claim an unbroken spiritual lineage dating back to our earliest spiritual moments, when man first saw a woman-shaped cloud and though _'would'!_
More seriously, only four of these archetypes don't fit me at all (casual, memer, shipper, and purist), while every other one fits a part of my anime-diet, to a lesser or greater extent.
Perhaps an archetype was left out: _the oldtaku_ - a grizzled anime veteran that's been watching anime longer than most fans have been alive and has seen all kinds of anime, both mainstream and obscure several times over. Still keeps up with some seasonal shows, probably has multiple waifus, watches both sub & dub (sometimes both for the same show), understands a fair bit of Japanese, is familiar with Japanese culture, and reads not only manga but also manhwa if they strike his fancy.
i am a casuoldtaku then
I am not sure I fit into your list. I love good art, great characters, and awesome stories with good world-building.
I'm the type who binges a whole new anime nearly everyday
Nobody:
Anime girls when the Mc brushes their shoulder against theirs: *Hm Guess I'll have a child...*
Am happy to admit that im a male romance anime enjoyer and no one can stop me from watching wvery romance anime and listing them all in a tier list
Me when Girls Und Panzer is shown in the fanservice part:
I used to watch old School anime while waiting for the school bus, have a collection of favorites on Netflix, recently added Mononoke Phantom in the rain
I'm a proud Intellectual anime fan-- I'm an expert when it comes to the Ghost in the Shell franchise, and I've got some connections to the people who made the animes.
You know I though I was a hard Kurumi simp
But you're on another level....
I'm a combination of "Sub vs Dub", "The Hipster" and "Manga Purist". I grew up with anime from the 70s onwards. XD
For those who dont know the anime girl on the pillow at the start is from kurumi from date a live
I'm a different category..... I'm the Japanophile.... Otaku but also now living in Japan, levelling up Japanese, and into everything Japanese (interested in music, history, language, culture, ppl, calligraphy and Japanese novels).
you forgot slice of life
I think im a combination of the shonen and intellectual cuz i always connect the dots and i always get so hype on the fight scenes
I strongly agree with you on the Fact that, Newbies think, Their Anime was the first to be that unique, ...When literally All the Old Anime had what that and also much more original stuff
The new Manga's can't even compare to how sane and Good the old serie were.
How is no one talking about Kurumi Overuse
I got one: the netflix
13:44 tbh with the sheer number of shows nowadays, it's probably more impressive if you've watched all the anime of 2024 than all the anime of 1983
I guess the impressive part about watching every anime from 83 would be the availability of the anime, since many older anime never got an official release outside of Japan or haven’t gotten an official release since it was dubbed back then.
15:59 "... Their clashes got so heated that Anno quit in protest halfway through and Tsuda walked away, refusing to finish the anime's story and leaving it on a weird cliffhanger."
That's an interesting spin.
The latter hampered production so much that the anime's last few episodes were clip shows made if recycled footage, unfinished art, paper puppets, and manga scans with some voiceovers thrown in."
i'm some sort of mix between the intellectual and the casual viewer, probably closer to the casual side.
I fall in the "hipster" category but I'm picking when watching older anime from the 90s back. I've seen the classics of many decades and still want to view ones that I might have missed.
Then there’s me:
- Obsessed with guess the anime videos on youtube
- Knows the majority of well known anime, but specifically only the openings
- Watches anime openings more than actual anime
- Bases whether or not to watch the anime off the opening
- Will watch pretty much any genre of anime as long as it’s not a harem (and the opening is interesting)
I'm absolutely a casual. Though I might have gone a little intellectual trying to figure out how Beastars' 3D animation works.
I am a Otaku, Shonen, Mecha, Toriyama, Precure, Gundam, Both Sub And Dub, and an Anime Hipster.
Nowadays anime have become my source of life and I seem to can't live without it😅
Secondly, I'm an shipper, a BIG one at that. Take TQQ for example. Till this day I still think Miku is the best choice for Futaro. Do anything you want, but I willl defend it till the day I die❤
Third, I'm a SUPER DUPER enthusiastic romance anime fan. Every season I will find at least 5 of them to watch and sometimes I would binge peak romance as well. At the end of the day, I admit I just want a lover and I'm slowly becoming a love expert thanks to them😊
Fourth, I can't say I'm a big weeaboo, I just blend in some Japanese almost every time I talk since I started watching anime. It's natural to the point I'm starting to feel like I dug too deep into anime that might mess up my life in the real world😭
Fifth, yes, I'm a degenerate, so what? I'm ALWAYS hyped whether there's a beach episode and I LOVE the fan service in anime 😎 it just feels so...... good, iykyk😂
Sixth, I'm proud to say, that I'm a MASSIVE waifu fan. Every. Single. Show. I would find my waifu and just appreciate how they blessed my free time with their performance in every episode, and I can confidently say, that I would write a whole essay about a certain waifu better than my English essay🤣
Finally, the other that I didn't mention is not that relatable imo but I would keep it brief here: I sometimes watch shonen anime, I prefer sub over dub, I'm definitely not a casual, memers make the community alive, I maybe would watch some underrated gems, I would appreciate the ones that goes into details on anime, and I would also defend my favourite manga at all times.
All in all, I LOVE ANIME and I would watch anime until the day I pass away. Peace✌️
Oh, and another thing, I would buy the mangas and light novels of the series I like and I would want to decorate my room as a true otaku in the near future since I'm a student myself😅
Honestly I’m definitely just in an anime phase rn but jojo and chainsaw man have easily become some of my favorite shows
I am the Romantic and Otaku at the same time
I'm not gonna debate sub vs dub but it is an interesting conversation because making a good dub is a very difficult thing to do, the reason the debate is so intense is because the older dubs just didn't put in effort, but that's becoming less and less common, the only reason why sub would always be superior would be if you actually understand Japanese and all the things that can't get translated
I think im a bit of a mix between otaku and intellectual
I have some anime merchandise but its also not the source of my entire wallet
I also love listening to video essays and reviews on anime and exploring different perspectives and deeply sharing opinions on individual characters from like a dozen different anime simultaneously
8:01 If only you could make my mom understand this
I think most people are going to be a mix of these categories. I collect some figures, I prefer dub, I like some shipping, and I can't get into some shonen but love some old school stuff. I also have a Rei Ayanami tattoo
When someone asks me:Sub or dub?
Me:I know japanese.
1:13 best not to start with this one, yeah
What Anime is that?
@@shadowran9193 Looking up to magical girls. Its intriguing to say the least and actually well written but definitely for a particular type of person
@@whispertangle4136don’t tell them brother
I’m into dubbed subbed anime (depending on the title), shonen anime, I admire the beauty and personalities of my favorite Waifus, fan service is better than drugs, I’m more in love with 2D waifus (but I don’t go too far), and I read the manga after one season is complete and not getting a second season anytime soon.
Love your content ❤❤❤❤
Title: what type of anime fan are you
First scene: a guy holding what seems a body pillow of Kurumi (or something similar).
Me: yep, that's absolutely me, well done
Ohh wow, I really like anime and watch over 100 different animes per year but I'm not that aggressive about it, I have almost 0 anime related things in my room except for 1 anime book (also is that "Date A Live" I see?)
I'm most of above but RN I'm just floating on by in the Waifu Fan
I have done some cosplaying (Makoto Itou, Ganta Nakami, Shinji Ikari all fairly easy and versatile cosplays for my appearance since I like to do those during an outdoors Halloween event and weather can be anything in October)
I have done some shipping (Mainly over shared backgrounds like Sayu Orgiwara and Saki Yoshida)
Have watched and rewatched cultured stuff (World's End Harem leading me down the Sci-Fi drama rabbithole and being the reason I would eventually watch Vivy since that scratched the "Flaws of a certain concept" itch)
But having these guys and girls that were also in these situations (Minami from Hokkaio Gals for simply having to also deal with a snowy winter) or helped people in said situations (Sakuta from Bunny Girl Senpai) is why I'm in that camp
