As a Hyperdimension Neptunia fan I loved this video. Neptune has been favorite goddess since the start and seeing a video exploring her deeper personality is great to see. Honestly this video was so good I hope you make a video on Neptunes relationship with all the other goddess, candidates and close friends and how they have changed or not over the course of the series.

I feel like I've got a bit of a different view on the dreams thing.
it's not so much that Nep-Nep's dream is less selfish, but that she's already satisfied with what she's got.
ultimately Vert's, Blanc's, and Noire's dreams each focus on them getting something that they lack in reality
but in Neptune's case, based on the comments from Compa and Nepgear, this is a fairly common sight that they've seen before. it seems clear from this that Neptune's wish and dream is basically just an ordinary day. one without any kind of crisis or adventure. It's probably a day where she'll get nagged by Histoire and have to do some work that she doesn't really want to do, but it's a day that she's satisfied with to the point that she could not wish for more than she already has.
this likely contributes to why she's able to appear carefree so often, it's hard not to be carefree when you're already living your ideal life.
your points still stand, this is just an extra layer on top of it.

I agree with this take, I've basically held the same notion since I saw that scene.
The funny thing is that this idea that Neptune's ideal of happiness is something she already lives all the time is that it retroactively changes how you perceive Neptune throughout the series. Although it's more explicit and evident in VII, Neptune has always had moments when she goes around helping and talking to her citizens just because she can, even in Victory, and Neptune's always had a much more outgoing and friendly approach to socializing. Even at her worst, Neptune has always wanted the people around her to be happy.
(Regarding Victory, I honestly think part of the reason she becomes a jerk there is Plutia. Plutia kind of bullies everyone to get her way and even if she's a kind girl, she's also very selfish and obstinate about getting her way, so it kind of rubs off on Neptune when Plutia latches onto her and they basically become a pseudo-couple for a couple decades)
The dreams also change a bit how you see the other goddesses of course, particularly Vert, but Neptune's highlights the reason she's the main protagonist and face of the series: she's the hero and it is her sincere desire to share her happiness and goodwill with everyone.

A rather informative video here! I'd like to see more of this coming from you (maybe the other CPU's, kinda like a dive into their mindset and characteristics. Noire and Blanc are good examples. Vert will be interesting to look at).
4:54 In regards to the difference between the two, it may not just be the localization. The matter of the fact is, each and every Neptunia game has a different team of writers and, in my opinion, the higher-ups likely reacted based on fan opinions going around at the time. As you said last vid, mk2 had mixed views back in the day, so the writing in Victory was meant to zero in on the comedy aspect since the previous title was quite serious (to limited success, of course, since nowadays, mk2/Rebirth2 is well celebrated). Of course, once the mixed views regarding the story of Victory set in, the higher-ups had to scramble and change again, leading to how the anime and Victory-II were written, especially in regards to Neptune, Nepgear and even Plutia (seriously, anime!Plutia is just amazing!)
14:16 - 19:31 - It's pretty interesting to see the dichotomy of the CPU's and their dreams. Three of them had selfish desires while the remaining one had a selfless one, but in my opinion, there's a tragedy to this revelation. The fact that these are DREAMS, impossible goals that these four cannot see themselves achieving in their lives in any shape or form. Think about it. Noire wants to be a successful VO, but doing that full-time requires her to abandon everything she worked hard for and achieved, one she held great pride over (something Uni looks her up to for as well). Blanc wanted a more suitable body, to be more confident in who and what she is, but because her nation strives towards the welfare of children and family, it is not possible. Even Vert likely cannot have a CPU Candidate of her own because of, what I believe, to be how her citizens view her, a self-reliant and independent (read: unapproachable) woman who can manage both her nation and her gaming habits in tandem.
But for Neptune, happiness is but a fleeting emotion among many others, and the people will constantly be beset by troubles, be it from small instances like robberies or missed opportunities, or world-ending disasters like the Deity of Sin, the CPU of Tari or even Kurome's machinations. Which honestly makes Neptune all the more aspiring, since she keeps striving for that selfless dream regardless of the odds, which she achieves by the True Ends of both Victory games, being able to link the two dimensions together so she can see Plutia and Peashy whenever she wants and save Uzume together with Nepgear, her human self and everyone in the party despite the odds. (Noire is a close second, but even she understands that her nation must come first).
Sorry for the long text, but I wanted to get my two credits in.

I have to admit, this series of games from Compile heart is probably the weirdest and most wholesome writing I seen in games, I agree completely that Neptune is the least appreciated by many players, in many games she went above and beyond to help others despite how much she felt like it's a bother but her goal is happiness of her friends and the people she's supposed to serve. She often mentioned in most games how she would be overjoyed for the time when Nepgear would take over her role permanently, not because she's lazy, but because she wants her to experience the joy of helping her people and seeing their happiness. She wants her sister to experience the joy and growth of the people for herself. Neptune rarely actually does help people, because she believes in their own strength, and seeing them overcome their own problems makes Neptune incredibly happy. She loves her people and her sister so much, she is willing to sacrifice everything for them. There were a few moments when she actually considered sacrificing herself for the good of others and was stopped at the last moment by Nepgear, realizing she would make Nepgear so sad she would never forgive herself, and opted to find a more difficult solution, just to see everyone smiling again. Neptune is the ultimate goat.

I've only played Re;Birth 1, but with that I gained an idea of Nep being a character just like you described in the video. Someone goofy, but not just because, but to cheer other people up, and to go out of her way to help everyone.
I feel like although Purple heart does feel different sometimes, it's just because that's more appropriate for the situation, she's transforming because the situation is serious and needs to take it seriously. Purple heart has done nep-like things too, like fly back to get to eat her pudding.

One thing I noticed with each dream is that not only do they help with characterization, the girls' dreams each represent something that the companies they are based on want.
For example Noire wants to be a voice actor which plays into Sonys desire to go more heavily into film & television, not just sticking to games, a desire to expand the company interest but not lose them hence Uni exists within the dream not as her own person but to just do the things that Noire doesn't want to.
Blanc wants boobs which plays into a metaphore for Nintendo wanting a mature reputation to a general so that they wouldn't be stuck as the family/kid friendly console, allowing more variety to their games and products.
Vert is xbox and wants to have an assured successor/admirer which plays into microsoft wanting to be the next big console, but the company doesn't deliver on anything truly new, hence why Verts sisters are just mini clones, this is another metaphor for microsofts desire to have cake & eat it to.
By comparison, Neptune doesn't come from an actual game console company like the rest of the goddesses, so her dream gets to be not a reflection of any preexisiting company but instead something that she as a character can want & what she wants is for people to be happy, relaxed & carefree.

Noire's dream also includes her appearently wanting to date. But Neptune (Based on the Shipping thing) is never actually mentioned.
It's implied Noire is going on a date with some Random Character who might be a Boy or a Girl. They never specified the gender of the person she's going on a date on and they don't specify if it's a Romantic relationship or Platonic.

I've loved Nep since Rebirth 1, the first game in the series I played. Rebirth 2 I felt she was OK, but Victory/3's Nep was rough. VII turned her around so well.
Another scene that really hammers home Neptune's sefless personality: when Nepgear is told she's the only one who can "deal" with Uzume by Uzume and Neptune due to 'Gear having a long range weapon, Neptune sees just how much weight it's putting on Nepgear's shoulders and says something along the lines of "Yeah, this isn't something that should be shouldered by one person", transforms and supports Nepgear.
    Great set of videos!
P.S. Finding out that Histoire is essentially a 1990's PDA made by Uranus made how she acts, and how Neptune reacts to her, make soooo much sense. Neptune doesn't know how to turn the reminders off, so like clockwork the little PDA fairy bleeps at her incessantly.
P.P.S. That outro music will always hit hard, after getting the normal ending and hearing Neptune's howl of despair at what happened I broke down in tears until the credits ended.

Neptune wanting what she thinks is best for everyone can be applied to the ending of Rebirth 1 if you think about it, despite Arfoire being an enemy and has been trying to kill her for the entire time she knew her, she still went out of her way to try and save her in the end even at the cost of her own life and in the True/Good ending she succeeded, much to Histoire's joy.

Worth noting that IF International localized VII, NIS America was dropped. _Can't imagine_ why that was... (Producing Perfection was also the only spinoff NIS America localized and that one is still stuck in Vita jail while everything else has been ported to various platforms, with PC ports being the most consistent across the board (though the IF and Compile Heart crossover game MegaMiracle Force is also still mobile-exclusive and apparently never got localized))

  • @soulechelon2643

9:40 I caught that! ...and I want one.
Anyways lol, VII felt like a more "Mature" Neptunia game. The jokes were there, but not constant and interruptive. Banter is certainly there, but not overbearing. It felt like the writers took every criticism so far and refined their technique here. This one was my favorite game in the series (4 Goddess was my favorite gameplay-wise though), and Neptune felt like the hero she needed to be without heavily sacrificing her derpy ways.
In defense of the other girls' dreams, I remember thinking to myself the dreams made alot of sense when taking into context their backstories. Uni's confusion towards Noire's also hints at what was stated in the video - Noire along with Blanc and Vert are constantly giving to improve their people's lives. Stands to reason their deepest desires would be selfish - wanting to finally be given something in return. Neptune, while of course clearly loves her people, is satisfied with what she has and doesn't feel the need to improve further. All that's left is her people's happiness.
This actually is a direct parallel to what the entirety of Neptunia is parodying - console platforms. Sega at this point is less about platforms and more about third-party publishing and developing. That's their niche now and while I don't have any sales figures or anything they seem to be chugging along. They don't have a "console" to improve upon. But Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo - all three are constantly trying to improve and compete witch each other...though I think Microsoft may be going the way of Sega soon lol. But yeah. Same reason why Vert has no sisters - Xbox has no handhelds.
Also 15:55 Chika. I love her design so much. Black and green are one of my favorite color mixes. Yeah she was a bit one-note with her fangirling of Vert but I was hoping she'd become her legit sister and be a mainstay in the series.

This video is kinda making me want to replay VII ngl.
Neptune has always been my favorite from this series, so clicking this was a no brainer. Good video overall, I liked thet you often referenced direct dialogue from the game to back up your points.
VII did a lot of good for the series and its my favorite entry in the franchise (i have the VII PS4 skin that came with the original limited edition release lol) and I especially liked that the writers remembered that Neptune is a character originally defined by the dichotomy of her two forms. It has always been my belief that Neptune and Purple Heart simply emphasize different sides of her core personality and it comes through very well in VII when either form is always effectively the same person under a different lens. Neptune will usually be carefree but often speaks from the heart when needed; Purple Heart will usually be serious but isn't afraid to show how she feels or let her hair down.
Since you compared the dreams of the goddesses, I kind of wish you also compared the relationships each goddess has with their respective counterpart from the Gold Third. Although they all end up befriending the Gold Third member they know (well, not so much with Vert and S-Sha), there's often a conflict brewing in the background of this relationship, or they start of adversarial.
None of this is present with Neptune and B-Sha. Neptune befriends her extremely quickly and rather than feel usurped or humiliated, she's thankful to B-Sha for looking after her nation. The two simply move on to working together to steward Planeptune and otherwise hang out like normal friends when they're not working. They never have any conflict until B-Sha is literally brainwashed into madness (not a unique situation among the Gold Third to be truthful), and even then, that fight isn't Neptune's final boss like it is for the others, it's the one right after when B-Sha joins up with Neptune and they finally stand together and protect Planeptune side by side, because they are both *heroes.*

    • @Prox1matic
      @Prox1matic  Месяц назад +2

I was considering bringing up the other Gold Third as a comparison to Neptune and B-Sha's relationship. However,
      1. It would detract from the main topic of the video in my opinion, unlike the comparison I made with the dreams as it delves into the real specifics of their characters.
And 2. I already explained that Neptune and B-Sha were able to get along well despite not knowing each other very well. They were total strangers (besides their names) and yet Neptune still sought to help her and maintain a cordial relationship with her, as emphasized by her willingness to work together in running the nation until everything is sorted.
Appreciate the comment though, glad you enjoyed the video!

I have to add, I think that a good addition to her writing is with Re;Birth 1. She is shown as being quite selfless there, to the point she gives up her memories for the sake of her friends. The opening of Sisters vs Sisters also shows that well, with her putting herself at risk so others can escape.

    • @Prox1matic
      @Prox1matic  10 дней назад

Re;Birth 1's Neptune is a different Neptune, and isn't related to the canon one that I talk about in the video, so there's no reason for me to talk about RB;1 Nep. As for Sisters VS Sisters, yeah you have a bit of a point; however, Sisters VS Sisters also dialed back her character once again, with much of her screen-time spent being her regular, bubbly and joke cracking self rather than what we see in VII. I focused on VII in the video for that exact reason.

@@Prox1matic Well there are similarities between each, that's why I brought up Re;Birth 1. Sisters vs Sisters, I haven't gotten too far yet, but I noticed that at the start. Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you thought that the video was good!
      As for your suggestions:
      - I wouldn't mind taking a look at the villains, especially from the main series' timeline. I may not think as highly of a few, but I think overall, they're a solid group of antagonists and examining them in finer detail could be fun. I'd especially love to try and go over the more well-received villains such as Kurome and SVS Arfoire.
      - The chirper interactions, on the other hand, that could be a bit monotonous and lacking substance; generally speaking, the chirper interactions, especially prior to VII I'd say, are usually very short and don't offer much in the way of building character. They're simply a few lines of dialogue that are a small distraction from the main gameplay, and are made to give you a little chuckle. Some of the sub-events from the games could hold some weight, though, so I'll keep it in mind.

I had kind of forgotten about that beautiful oxymoronic part what the dreams. That part gives some actual depth to Neptune's character because it shows a bit about her true nature under all of the childishnees. There's also a really nice moment (from a storytelling perspective) where Nepsy makes "me" cry and I think it's nice because of the way it shows her flaws. She's definitely more useful as a hero by VII but the way she manages to upset "me" shows she still has those traits of being clueless and somewhat stupid. It's perfect for this game since it directly contradicts what they are up aganist, Kurome's side is the total opposite to Nepsy and is very intelligent and calculating when it comes to the big players (that being Kurome and Croire) and that slip in judgement from Nepsy is immediately used as ammunition to fire back and weaken "my" resolve. It's made even worse by the fact that in this situation what Nepsy saye is 100% correct, Uzume is in a sense the fake and she knows that so this is like a nuke to her resolve and if you choose the Heart Dimension route when the game splits you get to see exactly why it's so effective against Red Uzume in particular. You did convince me that Nepsy is better written than I immediately give her credit for. I don't like her at all but nonetheless there are things about her mentioned in here that I'm quick to overlook and that ideally I shouldn't be overlooking.

And while I may not personally agree with some of the creative choices made in regards to Neptune's character in the transition from _HDN1_ to _mk2,_ I do understand _why_ the writers probably felt they needed to make these changes (for starters, HND1 was _very_ bleak and somber in tone, compared to the rest of the series, so making Neptune more cheerful and optimistic was a good start), and I can understand why Neptune is many people's favorite character and one of the most popular characters in the series.

I disagree; if Neptune in VII was supposed to be written in the spirit of how she was written in HDN: The Animation, then I think they would have given her more somber and emotional moments rather than simply sprinkling it in throughout the game - most notably, in the Ascension Ending where she breaks down entirely. They evidently didn't do that here, or I would have talked about them more. The anime might have had an *influence* on their decision regarding the tonal shift from Victory to VII, but I don't think it's plausible to say it's the reason why Neptune's writing is the way it is in VII.
-I don't like Neptune's anime version either way, I think her whole turmoil involving Peashy is super forced and really should have been built up earlier. I know that it's only a 13-episode anime, but at the same time, I'd rather have something span an entire short anime instead of being forced upon me in the last few relevant episodes.-

I actually think the traits from Victory are because of Plutia/Iris Heart
Plutia/Iris Heart started to poke fun at Nepgear and Neptune (Scared of Iris Heart) caved and joined in.

    Honestly...
Knowing all this makes the ending where Uzume doesn't survive all the more heartbreaking.
Neptune wants the happy ending for all.
    And when that doesn't happen.
    She's devastated.
That wailing cry at the end sticks with me because that's the one time where we Neptune loses it.
It's so out of character in a good way.

I really wish the games would focus more on Neptune as a protagonist. I don’t hate Nepgear, but it does bother me that Neptune has to be brought down just so Nepgear could be hyped up, with mk2, the third arc of Megadimension, and Sisters vs Sisters.

  • @brubio39

Maybe Neptune’s characterization were based on how SEGA was, considering she was based off SEGA
SEGA lack of active hardware (post Dreamcast) could be why Neptune was considered a lazy goddess
Furthermore, Neptune showering care to her citizens more than herself could be reflected on how SEGA was still pushed to games a tried to make them good quality (especially in recent with the Persona, Yakuza and Sonic series) to show that SEGA still cares about their fans
This stuff is always on the back of my mind since Neptunia in general is an analogy for the gaming industry, so stuff like Neptune’s attitude could be how SEGA was at the time the when the game was in development and such
Kinda like how Nepgear in SvS expressed how they don’t make consoles anymore since SEGA fell off from the console war (a heart breaking fact to hear honestly when it’s in-universe)

Having watched both videos, it's kind of the reason why I still criticize Victory for how poorly written Neptune was and it was by Game Maker R:Evolution was when I realized it wasn't the fact it was light hearted, but how very mean-spirited the game actually was. Like you could say that it was due to the mk2 having mixed reception by fans, but how they decided to do was (like you said before) very poorly executed in my opinion.
I think one thing to add is Sisters vs Sisters has certain cases where Neptune can be serious at times with the main example I would always bring up is when Neptune tells Noire how Nepgear should face it on her own. The context behind that particular line, while I will not say since I don't think everyone has played Sisters vs Sisters, tells that while she still the happy go-lucky girl, knows that it's something that even she needs to be mature about.

I think your points prove what Neptune is a much better person than it initially appears, not a better written character. She is both, dont get me wrong, but dissecting the writing is a bit more... cynical, i suppose. She is a well-written character because she serves her role in the story near flawlessly. In the same way, a character opposite of her, while being a bad person, also could be well-written

Except the original game and Rebirth 1 are not actually canon to the current storylines
The True ending of the Original and Rebirth 1 has Neptune, Blanc, Vert and Noire give up their powers.
Which is than contradicted in mk2 and Rebirth2 where they literally have their Powers back ?

@@shelbybayer200 the first game and subsequently re;birth 1 take place in the super dimension. The only other game that takes place in the super dimension is Nep Unleashed.
They generated a new canon with the hyper dimension in the second game and stuck with it for the rest of the mainline games and some spin offs (4GO, Virtual Stars, SvS for those that don't consider it a mainline game).
At this point, SvS utterly destroyed the hyper dimension both in terms of previous entries and feasible future so starting again would be the most logical sense if we ever get a new mainline game.

For me is Neptunia also my most favourite franchise of all time. Nothing can overtop Neptunia. :)
The problem I see is that there are people who are too focused on MAINLINE. With its spin-offs, Neptunia produced just as great games and ideas as in the mainlines. Despite many spin-offs, other game series don't have the problem of fans becoming so attached to mainlines, so why is this done with Neptunia?

    • @Prox1matic
      @Prox1matic  Месяц назад

I'd say it's because, to a majority of fans, the mainline games as well as a select few spin-offs are the pinnacle of the franchise, VII especially. And knowing that a new *officially-stated* mainline game hasn't released in what is GOING to be 10 years, it doesn't exactly give the constant spin-offs and remakes/re-releases a positive reputation. Especially not when a lot of the spin-offs are of sub-par quality.

@@Prox1maticYou described the points well. For my part, I have to say that it was only through Neptunia that I really learned that fun and not technological performance should come first. There are technically outdated or less well-designed games that are more fun than so-called AAA titles. Of course, I'm happy if Neptunia comes from a purely technical point of view, e.g. graphically at least at a level that is in line with today's average, but the series has touched my heart so much that I'm most interested in the stories and possibilities of Neptunia. I actually love all Neptunia games, the only exception where the gameplay wasn't quite my thing is Hyperdevotion Noire Goddess Black Heart. It wasn't so bad that it was bad, but it's not my style of play either. But I love how the developers always surprise with something new, including in terms of gameplay. Otherwise, I love the series just as it is and am happiest with it. For me, there is no better franchise than this one. Thank you for your reply.
Can I combine your videos and upload them to my RUclips channel? You explain the series in a very beginner-friendly way, I would like to support Neptunia in all areas. I would point out that the video originally came from you and add the relevant links.

    • @corban5364

Nep and Plutia are not the same person.
They are both godesses from Planeptune, but if anything, Plutia would be Nep's predecessor since is based in the Sega Master System while Nep is a fictional successor to the Sega Saturn. But in the ultra dimension there are no CPU generations, the CPUs just change overtime and new CPUs are expected to found their own nation, not be assimilated by an existing one.
Also, on an unrelated note, Nep exists in the Ultra Dimension, as a regular human, but is born decades after the start of the story, at the point of the generation jump between the sixth and seventh console generation.
Uzume is just Kurome's heart shaped into physical form by shares, there's no more to it really.
