The two girls confronted each other with knives, and our dear blonde idiot stepped in between them. As he bled on the floor, the two completely snapped and concluded that if they killed him and then themselves, they could be with him forever in the afterlife. Something to know is how large a disparity there is between Naofumi's surface thoughts and actual actions. His surface thoughts sounded downright evil often, like the mentioned desire to control Raphtalia for reminding him of the Bitch. His surface thoughts were often in line with this almost evil way of thinking, but his actions were as they were in the anime: reasonable, fair, and sometimes even kind. Take it as you will, but he did not act as his surface thoughts usually suggested he would. Whenever he had an excuse to be actually angry, like being bothered by her night terrors or her wetting the bed, he acted in a much kinder manner, without his more aggressive surface thoughts ever showing up. I always took it as his surface thoughts being his way of venting but not how he necessarily felt deep down, but you may take it as you will. This is from my knowledge as a light novel reader, by the way, I haven't gotten around to reading the manga adaptation.
The whole thing is set up as catharsis for a certain group of people. People who think and act the way he does. We're not evil, but we have dark thoughts about the things that bother us that immediately go away because we know we want things to be better. I think the anime paints it very well when the blacksmith guy talks about it. He wonders if the world is unfair and if shield hero is being corrupted by it. In a way, this reflects well on a certain group of people who don't feel like they belong here. The whole thing, as far as episode 5, is to make shield hero feel very unwelcome in this world and that it is unfair. The reason why it's cathartic is because the story will also remind those people that it's okay to feel pain and have these feelings as long as you can do good, even if not specifically for others. It's cathartic because it's still entirely possible for someone to believe in you even if the world doesn't. You don't have to be alone in an unfair world.
Yeah, they scrubbed out some of Naofumi's less PC motivations and characteristics in the anime. That part where he bought Raphtalia so he'd have a proxy for the princess to make suffer, was definitely different. They always remove things that make the MC look bad when putting it in an anime. He did however, not abuse her, and later felt sorry for her and she grew on him, so it wasn't a big deal. Also, he really worked hard and spent a LOT of time grinding and crafting to make that medicine for Raphtalia, and it took many vials of it. In the anime, he just sorta cranked it out and gave her one dose. The reason these scenes are important in my view is that the first one shows that he grew to pity her and realize that punishing her was cruel and unfair, since she is not a nasty bitch like Malty. Also, I'm sure her backstory broke his heart... since she's suffered more than enough from her previous cruel master. The second part showed the huge amount of effort and lengths that he went to to help her get better. Gathering, researching, experimenting, crafting, and repeating this process over and over till she was finally well. Much more meaningful than Oh hey, I made this potion last night, here you go. Wow you're cured.
Cut-Content sometimes makes me wonder: How much? How much are ‚Sound’ and ‚Moving Pictures’ worth sacrificing for? It’s common practice to leave things out when adapting something, to the point where i genuinly wanna ask: Is this even worth it or are; no jokes; Anime inferior to Manga overall? I mean, we sacrifice a lot for the Pictures to move, aye? A lot of a lot?
@@nenmaster5218 There are several main problems when adapting things... First of all, the original was not intended to be read in 2 hours, but most movies are. So you have to somehow fit a giant amount of content in a tiny amount of time. People just don't sit through movies if they are longer than their attention span. *shrugs* And with anime, there is a certain flow that must be maintained so that you don't get entire episodes that are totally boring at random. Secondly, there is often a huge amount of padding and fluff in written material, because authors are expected to write quality AND quantity. I'd say at least 30% of novels are just excess description that is totally unneeded. Also 20 pages of description can literally be shown in 1 second of video because a picture is worth a thousand words. Also, there are many tiers of media in a sort of order... for example: Web Novel --> Published Novel --> Manga --> Anime --> Movie --> Netflix Adaptation. Each level has more and more exposure, more restrictions, more censorship requirements, and a broader audience. Also each one is shorter and shorter because people's expectations are less time invested for each level. Another thing is that things like anime and movies cost a LOT of money to make and each frame is super expensive to make. So the less time you waste on unimportant garbage, the more money you save. Every second of airtime costs a huge amount. So cutting as many corners as possible is necessary.
Actually when Raphtalia returned to her Village most of the villagers were dead but all of the survivors were captured and sold to slavery along with Raphtalia.
If Cap America was designated as the Shield Hero, it would be frustrating to be forced to have to hit a balloon for 5-6 minutes. Previous world physical skills do not applied here. Imagine smacking w/ his mighty shield and not doing squat damage to the spear hero.
That’s exactly what I was thinking too, Captain America came to mind when all these asshats in the Story kept on doubting Naofumi. Now for some reason, I am thinking he’s somehow going to develop GUNS for himself to use or might develop Laser Beams or Lightning Attacks from Magic so he can cast them or he might even learn how to do a charge/supercharge Bash Attack on an enemy full force with his Shield to where it would break the bones of his enemies effectively taking supreme amounts of damage. Of course there is the Fist Type Attacks where he MIGHT use Chi to do some Superpunches...that in my opinion has a higher chance of happening. I wish he could meet a Dwarf who can make him a Gun or a Magic-Casting Teacher to teach him fire, Frost, Lightning and/or poison attacks.
@@Spartan11117777 He gets laser beams later on, and can deal 2 massive attacks that will curse him. Besides that, the other damage dealing shields used by our boi Naofuming are just counters. I've only read up to volume 13 on the light novel. He might get cooler shit later on.
Just a nitpick, but Raphtalia isn't a slave for years. More likely a month since Naofumi and them are summoned after the first wave happened. So it kinda shows how strong Raphtalia becomes mentally when she hasn't even had 2 months yet to mourn her parents. iirc from the web novel she is sold 3 other times before Naofumi and each time is sold back the following day due to her night terrors. One of the owners in the web novel whipped her though as she had scars Naofumi later helps for her with scar healing medicine he makes. Web novel doesn't really explore who the slave owners are while manga has a couple chapters on one of them.
In the light novel part of the adverse affects of the weapons is they cannot gain experience or level when they are withing a certain range of each other. This is why they gather parties and level separate while fighting together during the waves..... or at least part of it as I don't wish to spoil anything.
15:30 Something quickly to add, from the light novel, She even tried to dissect the rabbit even while her hands shake but her look was dead serious. That’s when naofumi decides to do it rather than her
Naofumi and Steve Rogers actually have two things in common. The first is the shield and the second is that neither of them can get drunk. Naofumi is a rather high alcohol tolerance while the super soldier serum in Steve metabolizes the alcohol so fast that it can't take effect.
You forgot that after Naofumi first unlocked a medicine shield and gave medicine to Raphtalia. When Raphtalia got her nightmares, Naofumi ended up fending off the enemies coming from the forest. Then Raphtalia woke up in Naofumi's arms and then Naofumi took a short nap.
It probably has a lot to do with the manga and light novels being able to more easily show us his inner thoughts which helps understand how much his phsyce changed.
yeah false accusations are really damaging even after you are cleared of all charges the damage has already been done as people are always skeptic towards people who has been cleared after such a thing
Don't know about the manga, but in the light novel he's traumatized by the allegations to the point that he can no longer taste. It also works into the activation of his shield skills, namely his first shield with the ability to attack.

2:05 - so, this anime showed us how universally accepted good characteristics of a person may actually come to be deleterious, if this person lacks knowledge, open-mindedness and other important things. And I really enjoy how it was pointed out about the Bow Hero - remember, he was said to have a strong sense of justice. But... Are we sure that it is the justice we know and not his own perception of it? This really touched me
Man, I wanted to like it but the pacing and story telling us just so odd in comparison to the light novel. I wish I started the other way around because I just can’t get into it. I’ve tried but I just can’t. Does it get better as the story progresses?

Glad to see you covering Shield Bro. This series has by far become one of my absolute favorites since I picked it up last year. I have only a limited amount of knowledge when it comes to the light novels. But I was lucky enough to read the original web novel. I'm interested to see some of the more major changes and divergence between the two.

According to the novel, the other two creatures in the manga, shown at 11:59, would most likely be identified as Eggugs and Mushes (the mushes are there called different things based on their color, white ones are Loomushes, green ones are Greenmushes, etc)
I'm not sure about you, Ani, but did anyone else take one look at Motoyasu and think, if not instantly, "Lancer Class Mordred (prototype)" or am I alone in that?
Yeah not in personality (except sometimes both can be just oblivious jackasses and I love it) but for me when he and the others appeared in the new world, without dialogue from them, it was the visual design that got me.
So I read only the light novel, and I wanted to share a theory on Naofumi-sama. While the others say that they were killed, the only thing that is said in the light novel is that Naofumi sat down to read the book and "was tired" He guessed her fell asleep because he woke up on the hard ground in a new land. After learning that all the others died and then were transported to Melromarc, I guessed that Naofumi died as well, to some illness or some sudden heart condition, and he doesn't know because he was suposedly a healthy otaku
Naofumi is the shield's first choice unlike the other weapons that failed to summon their first choice. So the second choice candidates have to die and be reborn. Since naofumi was first choice and the shield successfully summoned him he is much better at using the weapon that the others and also didn't have to die.
At the end of it all, he becomes an over powered hero/God together with raphtalia and they go to different worlds defeating evil. Such nostalgia. It's been about 5 years I think since I finished the light novel. This was the first manga that got me started in light novels.
Actually, about Naofumi's stats at level 1, considering that there's a separate HP stat, I think that the two round things represent Magic-based attack and defense. So at level 1, Naofumi's sheet would look like... Max HP: 142 Max MP: 38 Max SP: 40 Physical Attack: 1 Magical Attack: 10 Physical Defense: 35 Magical Defense: 22 Agility: 9 So, while Naofumi will never be a physical attacker, he can at least do respectable magic-based damage.
I don't think its magical attack. it's magic affinity/power. The only two magical attributes Naofumi can use are healing and support magic, meaning he cannot learn and use any type of attack magic.
3:15 Those stats from top to bottom are likely: Attack [1], Magic [10], Defense [35], Resistance [22], and Agility [9]. Since the two circle stats are similar, it's safe to assume they're related. One is like the shield for defense, but shaped like a full circle with a dot removed from the center. The other is placed next to attack, creating a sort of correlation between them, and is an empty circle with a dot added into the center. Given how the empty circle relates to attack and the full circle, and the full circle also relates to defense, it's a far assumption that those are the five stats: Attack, Magic, Defense, Resistance, and Agility. There are also the elemental resistances, HP, MP, and SP, but those are way more obvious.
If i rember well the LN directly say what the consquences for the heros is: (since it's seem like a spoil for the anime) They just can't get exp when figthing near another hero, and only if it's an holy weapon hero no consequences if it's a vassal weapon / 7 stars hero
@@genroynoisis6980 Maybe, i stop reading the manga a while ago. But it doesn’t change the fact that they can lv up change fine with a vassale weapon hero, doesn’t it ?
This is actually pretty common. It changes from manga to anime everytime. I still havent encountered any light novel adoptation that wasnt changed or reduced since this might be due to low budget to reach a certain point in a story or the animators are trying to fit a certain amount of story into limited episodes
The heroes do not gain experience if they are too close to another hero. Raphtalia was only enslaved for a few months having been enslaved (by the same noble knights that killed the monsters) after the first wave attack destroyed her village. Raphtalia is really the only sane one in any of the books. Everyone else seems broken or damaged somehow. Raphtalia is written as the ideal woman. Are you perhaps a graduate of the William Shatner School of Speaking?
one thing to note is that Raphtalia's village was attacked in the first wave, an event that was less than a month before being bought by Naofumi. the LN also goes into the fact that she had 3 slave owners before Naofumi who all returned her after one night each.
very good content, however, if you think about it, the shield would be able to use heavy armor and heavy weapon's, Naofumi if more of a very durable tactician who uses support method's to aid other's and leave an opening for an attack when you stop and think, the shield would protect the bow hero at the rear as he aim's and shoot's an arrow, the sword is in the front line of attack, and the sphear is the mid-guard taking on enemies from a distant range just behind the sword hero by a few meter's used like that, the role's would make sence
Im curious cant he absorb a sword, bow and etc so his shield will gain weapon forms with defense on top, when you said that he did it with the rope and pickaxe,Naofumi can be the most op from all 4 of them
He can't absorb other weapons and he can't use other weapons but he can do another thing to give his shield more forms that he doesn't learn until much later. Not saying what for the sake of not spoiling it for you.
@@cajs100 don't read the manga jesus fuck. Read the Light novel. Also the attack remains 1 for the entirety of his life as it's noted by him that he never gets stronger.
@@ShatMyShoes is Light Novel much better than both manga and WN? If so, I would like to start reading it. I just hope Naofumi married Raphtalia in the end though
I think his stats are 1 attack, 10 magic, 35 Physical defence, 22 magic defence, 9 speed. His health is at the top left(his right) in red. And the 10 stat's symbol is the inverse of the 22 stat.
10:58 Ooooooh. Honestly, if they kept that in then episode 3 or 4 would make sense as to why Naofumi was saying how Raphtalia betrayed him is because he thought of her as Myne. Really drove home how he was feeling at that moment.
Why does everybody think this is a manga series ):. It was adapted to manga and anime but was original a web novel/ light novel. Seems like no one is really reading the light novel version for some reason, tons more details in it too
Lord TouchMe I looked into them but the reviews anywhere they could be found seemed to indicate they could be more difficult than fun at times. With that I judged it a low priority... plus I’m already reading several light novels and adding shield hero would put them all on hold until I caught up to the broadcast... so that to intense a commitment I’ll end up picking them up after the anime airs/stops. Just like I did with Log Horizon
I do hope that he can get proper attack skills, i mean the shield *CAN* be used as an attack weapon. Examples are Goofy's style in Kingdom Hearts and Captain America.
SPOILER he does and he doesn't. He gets an offensive shield but the cost of using it is extremely severe. %99 of the time he remains totally dependent on his party.
SPOILER It is from the curse series. The first time he uses it his body was wrecked and he spent weeks in bed unable to move getting healed. Even after his body recovers he has a curse on himself, something like a 40 percent reduction to ALL stats that has to be waited out for several more weeks.
Just one thing that i'd like to point out: Raphtalia had only experienced about 1 month of slavery (a bit less actually) when Naofumi finds her. Not many years as it is said in the video (about minute 14:05 i think). That's part of why she could become so energetic after a few days of being with Naofumi. Srry if i don't explain it well, english is not my first language
So far the anime isn't doing to bad compared to alot of other anime. Made me actually get into the manga a bit, but I stopped since I was having difficulty figuring out which one would be better since LN and Manga are both very good.
12:47 - In the Web Novel, it was not a 3 headed monster dog. Just a combination of different monsters. She managed to recognize some bits of flesh of her parents in a huge blood puddle. In the Manga, she did not find anything but death and a couple of child hood friends that also survived. As to the nightmares, in the Web Novel, when Naofumi tried to tranquilize little Raph, knowing her screams would attract monsters. And that actually did. Raph was still asleep and with one arm, tried to fend off the monsters that came. Imagine how hard it was while avoiding them munching on sleeping Raph. When he managed to finished, he learned that if he tried to separate from her(he was trying to compound), she would instantly cry again attracting monsters. So that first night he didn't actually sleep. On another night, she was sleeping against his back while he was compounding. Pretty much he learned when she was about to start crying.... 13:55 - He does not fight the kids. He just plants one on the main bully's ass. Kid starts screaming: "My aaassssss!" You can imagine the rest. Raphtalia grabs his mantle, and Nao says to watch out. There is one there. Raph releases scared and Nao laughs. "Its ok! Lets go back to the Inn". 15:30 - It was not that Naofumi was the best option as a slave, it was there that she learned he was the Shield Hero and he was about to fight the incoming Waves. Since this is tightly connected to her, it is in this moment that in the WEB novel she does a huge change. Her eyes seemed kind of dead. Naofumi realizes she is experiencing something akin to children living in a warzone. Both of them were thrust in a situation not by choice, but must adjust to survive he tells her. She than ask him to let her strip the monster for the pelt. Being moved by how she suddenly changed, he tells her no since he doesn't want her to do all the grunt work. Naofumi expresses that after that, her attitude changed completely. The cave event never happened in the original web novel, since her reaction with the usapiru was more serious than in the manga/anime. 16:53 - In the manga, Raphtalia was more brutal attacking the monster dog. She didn't try to do a power slash from that high like she was Classic Voltron. She jumped and stabbed multiple times in a killing frenzy. Her face was very, very angry. However, the knife broke. The monster tried to bite Raph. While moving backward avoiding the bite, she felled. As the monster did a lunge over Raphtalia, the Airstrike Shield appeared and the dog hit himself so hard, it almost got its neck split. Raphtalia, with a tear on her eyes, smiled after noticing Naofumi was still alive. With the monster stunned, she then proceeded to grab both parts of the broken knife/sword(one of them started to bleed as she grips the blade) and thrusts both thru the monster heads. As of my knowledge, a unique segment was, when the manga showed also when she stopped having nightmares. On a dream, she was running towards her parents at a distance. She was happy and wanted to tell them about how she met the great Shield Hero. But when she got close, her dad stopped her with both of them smiling at her. They then vanished, and she smiled once again. She was grateful and said that she will no longer be afraid because she was with the Shield Hero. Then an image of Naofumi and Raph sharing a bed at an Inn. Both asleep, back to back. She holding her ball with a smile.
The thing is Kadokawa is adapting the LN, the director already stated this in the AMA so no WN content will be in the anime adaptation. I know the first volumes of the WN and LN are slightly the same. But again you can't say what happens in the WN that doesnt appear in the LN since at the end the WN is no longer canon. Something that really kinda makes me angry because the official translation of the first LN feels like a fansub one. Tons of typos and contradictions...
@@salazar84 what do you mean the WN is no longer cannon? It is the original story, right? I understand the anime being different and that 's also good. I just thought is as another version.
Edit: You can ignore this comment, This is incorrect, I forgot how rushed ep 2 was and commented without fact checking. I think you might be getting LN and WN mixer up, each shield hero LN has only about 20 chapters each. You might be using things from the WN when you should be using the LN. I have not read the WN but the LN should be considered canon while the WN only as a draft.
I believe most info from WN remains consistent until about volume 5 of the ln, so we should be good on that end. Based on what my friend told me about the WN arcs, it remains relatively consistent until after the vassal weapons arc, with most differences being the more minor details, similar to the differences between manga and ln/anime.
I've read WN, LN, and manga from cover to cover and the anime takes from all of them. Most of the dialogue was from WN, the events are from the LN, and most of the key frames and looks of the world came from the manga. EDIT: WN and LN should be considered as different stories since they are far too different you can't even say it's a draft because the events from both version are really too different. Even Naofumi's personality in the 2 versions are different.
@@jonathan4554 This^ The LN story goes totally different with new enemies and several differences in how the waves happen. One of the arcs even gets skipped completely in the LN, with events having a largely different ending.(WN readers whom are reading the manga should have already noticed what i'm talking about. As for LN readers, they know this for a long time already)
Depends on how long ago the first wave was before now in the story. She didn't become a slave until after the first wave. As far as I remember that was only a few months though.
Hey, this is just a suggestion but the best way to veiw anime character stats in the anime is to get close to a scene where the stats appear, go to the slowest time setting for video playspeed, and pause the video the millisecond that the status appears. By doing this you can read the words and numbers of stats, skills, and depending on the anime even titles. Good luck doing this as it takes practice, even more so on shows that rarely show status for more than a second or two. When you get this subskill down you can do it in almost any Isakai anime. @@Terrakol Truck kun, that is all.
I see that you turned the word “Bitch” into a proper pronoun...
@@Tamburo52 Well, Naofumi refers to her that way mentally in the light novels.
I always saw his surface thoughts as a giraffe
@@EndanDrachon r/woosh
You mean bitch
Didn’t it take many vials because she kept spitting/throwing it up? At least thats what I remember from the manga
@@ericjoel5363 I dunno, that couldn't have helped.
Cut-Content sometimes makes me wonder:
How much?
Also, there are many tiers of media in a sort of order... for example:
Web Novel --> Published Novel --> Manga --> Anime --> Movie --> Netflix Adaptation.
That sucks...
Some of them were actually left behind in the cell were they were tourtured
4:32 See!!! This is what happens when you date multiple girls and one of them is a Yandere

The shield isn't weak tell that to Captain America

I've been reading the Light Novel and they cover the whip owner in detail, including Raphtalia's friend who was also there
doesn't it have something to do with her forced aging cause she leveled up. not only her body but her mind matured.
In the light novel part of the adverse affects of the weapons is they cannot gain experience or level when they are withing a certain range of each other. This is why they gather parties and level separate while fighting together during the waves..... or at least part of it as I don't wish to spoil anything.
we all know the real reason why they can't be together: 4 dudes keeping each other company is gay af *looking at you final fantasy XV*

That unknown stat is probably magic. Also Naofumi was not cautious of the princess because he was not aware she was even a princess at that point.
I can see it visually, but his personality says otherwise.
same here expect Personality
Yeah not in personality (except sometimes both can be just oblivious jackasses and I love it) but for me when he and the others appeared in the new world, without dialogue from them, it was the visual design that got me.
He does, except for his personality
Alternatively, a Lord Knight from Ragnarok Online. Naofumi was officially based on a Ragnarok Online Shield Crusader.
This is literally the only series I can rewatch constantly
Very cool, please keep making these
Actually, about Naofumi's stats at level 1, considering that there's a separate HP stat, I think that the two round things represent Magic-based attack and defense.
So at level 1, Naofumi's sheet would look like...
Max HP: 142
Max MP: 38
Max SP: 40
Physical Attack: 1
Magical Attack: 10
Physical Defense: 35
Magical Defense: 22
Agility: 9
So, while Naofumi will never be a physical attacker, he can at least do respectable magic-based damage.
I don't think its magical attack. it's magic affinity/power. The only two magical attributes Naofumi can use are healing and support magic, meaning he cannot learn and use any type of attack magic.
Holy sh*, Truck kun at it again?

Thanks, for making these videos! I subbed when you coverd Goblin Slayer.
very good content, however, if you think about it, the shield would be able to use heavy armor and heavy weapon's, Naofumi if more of a very durable tactician who uses support method's to aid other's and leave an opening for an attack
when you stop and think, the shield would protect the bow hero at the rear as he aim's and shoot's an arrow, the sword is in the front line of attack, and the sphear is the mid-guard taking on enemies from a distant range just behind the sword hero by a few meter's
used like that, the role's would make sence

So Naufumi was the only one who didn’t die
There’s a metaphor there but I don’t see it
12:47 - In the Web Novel, it was not a 3 headed monster dog.
Maybe I shouldn't have said canon. Yes the WN is the original story but the LN is a revision of the WN.
Naofumi was searching for Knowledge and entertainment.
Amazing video hope you continue the series
@@DragonEdge10 oh wait nvm, I just checked the LN and this video is correct. I forgot how rushed ep 2 was.

The LN story goes totally different with new enemies and several differences in how the waves happen. One of the arcs even gets skipped completely in the LN, with events having a largely different ending.(WN readers whom are reading the manga should have already noticed what i'm talking about. As for LN readers, they know this for a long time already)
I cant help but appreciate coverage on this Anime it's very good and very different from most and I'm happy to see people enjoying it
Raph a slave for years? I thought it was just a few months.
She was a slave prior to meeting Naofumi.
If this helps or is of use then your welcome, if not then "0oh well at least I tried" Have a good day ~ONEZero
Cut-Content sometimes makes me wonder:
How much?
How much are ‚Sound’ and ‚Moving Pictures’ worth sacrificing for?
It’s common practice to leave things out when adapting something,
to the point where i genuinly wanna ask: Is this even worth it or are; no jokes; Anime inferior to Manga overall?
I mean, we sacrifice a lot for the Pictures to move, aye? A lot of a lot?

I just find it funny that Naofumi ate some alcohol fruit thing and was just fine, but Mr. Chad collapsed lol
Funny how in episode 1 they didn't cut out how a redhaired woman lies about sexual misconduct to ruin a mans social standing and career.
There are way too many hidden functions and enhancement methods in the weapons. Ugh.
Those functions are in the weapons of the others but those fools don't use them which is why they are so much weaker than Naofumi
