Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you. I just did this with my Honda lawn mower (HRR2169 VKA) which had been sitting out for over 2-3 years with old gas in it. Naturally it wasn't starting properly. Specifically: it would start only after spraying starter fluid in it and then it would stop after about 1-2 seconds. I put this video on to help me figure out how to remove and clean the carb. Everything went pretty much exactly as pictured here Note that this was the first time i've ever tried disassembling and repairing any kind of engine before on my own, and i was able to fix it thanks to your clear view of what was going on. Two days ago i didn't know what a carburetor was. Now thanks to this video, a simple wrachet set and some carberator cleaning spray my mower works beautifully again! So thank you!!
I’d just got done replacing oil, fuel filter, air filter, old fuel and spark plug and it still wasn’t running. I mimicked what you did to clean the carb and got my mower running again! Keeping the gaskets aligned when bolting the assembly back together was pretty frustrating, but once it was all done she started and ran strong like new :) Thank you!
Can't thank you enough for this. After watching your three part guide I diagnosed, stripped, cleaned and re-assembled my defunct Honda lawnmower. Like your friend's, my carb was contaminated from the dirty fuel tank. It is now running like a well oiled Singer sewing machine!
Great set of 3 videos, I have a similar Honda engine in my mulcher, and seeing someone else go through the steps was a fantastic help. I only use my mulcher every few months and when it was new it started with almost zero effort on the first pull every time and I've never had a motor start as easy as the Honda did but over a couple of years, it has become harder to start and now it won't start at all. Watching the video has helped me plan for the job and I can now get some carbi cleaner and all the tools I need ready before I begin. Thanks for the video and the other comments were really helpful also.
I just completed your procedure in your 3rd video on the subject. It went pretty well. When I started it cold it started on the first pull. I had a loping issue and I decided I had the small spring wire and the larger wire in the wrong holes. Once I changed that back, everything worked perfectly. Thanks again.
Thank You! Neighbor gave me this because it wouldn't run. Someone gave it to him. I watched you shove the throttle all the way down and wallah! I wondered why my choke wasn't kicking in. Mine was getting stuck and not letting it go all the way down to choke mode.It also need the carb cleaned out.
You have the touch, and by that I mean ability to diagnose the problem and show others a really straightforward way to correct it. I have a mower with the same motor . Can't think of another DIY ever that compares. THX.
I totally agree with the others here that are speaking out as to what a Great Job that you did at fixing the Honda Motor GCV160 Mower, Carbeurator, the lines, spark plug, and the bulb etc....!! I just wish you would attempt to answer the questions that many are still asking.....about why their Mower won't start, or might start with Carb Fluid-Cleaner, but wont start or stay started after 10 minutes or so.....and if it does start, and stay started, the Mower will only operate at half Power......Half RPM Speed!! It would really help a good number of us that are asking the same question. Please Help?? I added some Chevron Techtron Fuel Line Cleaner.....supposed to be the best stuff out there to add to your Gas Tank that will clear your Fuel Lines and Fuel Injectors as well as Carbeurator.....but I had left Gas Premium Gas, 93.3 Octane.....in the Mower Gas Tank in between Seasons, as in Over the Winter SEason......However it had been operating just fine up till now midway through the Summer until now, when it wont start, or stay started, if it does start, will only operate at Half Power....Half RPM's......I just can't understand why the Mower won't kick on after pulling rope several times over and over.....the Mower is only 2 years old, and not used a whole lot at that point!!! Please Help??? Thank You Very Much in Advance!!!
@@tiarara2011 A lot of times, the problem is with the ethanol that is in the gas. I only use ethanol-free gasoline in my yard equipment. That way you won't have problems.
Same exact problem with my Craftsman Mower w/ Honda engine - excellent and patient detail! Really appreciate it. I'll repeat this comment on your No Start Diagnosis & Part I Repair also. Thank you!
My wonderful father knew instinctively how to fix bikes. He only had a 6th grade education, but he loved to take bikes apart & put them back together. I guess I inherited a little of his curiosity about how things work. I have saved quite a lot of money by watching youtube videos like this to repair stuff. I call it attending RUclips University.
After you sprayed the carb with the cleaner, I didn't see you using any air to blow out any dirt and grime. Also I take the bowl right off the carb as there can be a build up of rust and dirt in the bottom of the bowel. Also you did not show all the little air holes in the nut that holds the bowl in place, or the little brass insert that goes in under that little screw you took out through the plug hole. These are all things to check when doing a complete carb cleaning. You lucked out this time as you had a relatively clean unit. Trust me that is not always the case. Oh! I have my problems too, not every job goes perfect. Thanks for the video.
I found your video series (3) on the Honda starting problem to be very encouraging. I have exactly the same problem. My Honda wont start on one pull or at all. I have to use starting fluid and pull the rope. I have to do these things about 3 times to get it to run. So, I am going to do the same you did following your video to the letter. I will be back in a day or 2 to report my results. I hope I have the same result as you. When my Honda was new it started on the first pull. I want to get back there like you did. By the way, your video was very thorough and the steps were very clear. Thank you!
Something worth mentioning :Always wear Goggles when spraying carburetor cleaner or choke fluid. It's very easy to get it in your eyes. These fluids are very abrasive and can seriously hurt your eyes. It's happened to me.So be careful.
Thank you sir for the kind step by step advice. Once I'd cleaned the carburetor and reassembled, the mower started on the fourth pull, then every pull after that.
Really entertaining and informational.....I love your good attitude. I think working on stuff is fun but sometimes my attitude slips. Thank you very much!!!
"everything will fall apart, there will be a lot of gaskets and it will look like one big mess!" that describes it PERFECTLY!! lol I will never forget the first time I removed a Honda carb and it all fell out, you get that "oh no, what did I just do" feeling. there is a way to sort of sandwich most of it on the carburetor studs, and it's fairly simple.
Mint job, thoroughly enjoyed it. I feel confident now with servicing my own Honda izy. Subscribed. Looking forward to watching the stihl chainsaw videos too. Might give me the confidence to give that a go too. Many thanks.
TX - FYI - I found that I could start the motor with the starter fluid & spray carb cleaner directly into the throttle opening & it cleaned it out - try that first. Nice video.
Great video. I have a similar one, and this video helped me a lot. I wanted to add that i had to unscrew the gas cap when i was trying to start mine, and that fixed it. It was not taking gas, and after i did that it worked. But now my carburetor is clean too. Thank you so much.
Spray SeaFoam through the carb (while running) and run some through the tank a couple of times a year and you won't ever have to take the carb apart. Have had the same (Honda) mower for 17 years mowing my south Florida lawn year round. You might even want to put a little in the oil a couple of mowings before changing the oil (every other summer).
Great, nice details throughout the entire 2 videos. I needed this to help fix the same issue I am having with two mowers I have. The 2nd mower replaced the 1st that would not start then the 2nd mower after a while started giving the same problem as the 1st. This video will help me troubleshoot and fix both mowers I believe. Thanks to your details.
This worked!! Great video and explanations. And accent! I got my mower running now after both of your videos... But now it's pulsating as it runs and mows. Hmm...
Usually that pulsating RPM is from a lack of air to the engine. Be sure to back the throttle lever off just a bit to un-choke it after its started and if that doesnt work double check that your air filter is clean.
Have a used Honda Quadra Cut with a HRR216 3tda motor. Has always had a tough time starting, especially without starter fluid. Normally takes about 12 pulls to start, and then it would stall. After 3 or 4 starts it would often keep running. I bought a new carberator. Friend installed it, but with only 2 seals, and it started a little better. I didnt reconnect the air filter and it was clogged after 1 use. I took it apart and cleaned the carb, but it still doesn't start without starter fluid. It does at least stay running now once it gets started. I'm thinking of buying a gasket kit and seeing if that helps.
Good Vid, thx. Brand new mower, got hit by sprinkler. Had water in bowl of carb. Took off carb, dissassembled, blew it out. Drained and replaced gas. Still won't start, but with starting fluid, then it dies. Clues?
Great video. Nicely explained. One question though. How come there is no primer bulb on Honda engines, or how is the gas forced into the carburetor bulb?
Hi, thank you very much for your video ! It is really helpful. I have a Honda HR194 to repair and I think it has a carburetor problem because when I put some fuel into the air filter, it starts for a short time. How can I know if the carburetor is broken ? or if I just need to adjust it ?
Is Honda your favorite Small Lawn Mower, or do you have a different brand that you like best....?.......What small lawn mower do you use....?........Great Video......You are very Thorough and your explanations, and Parts Close-Ups are excellent.
What he said. You NEED to REMOVE the BOWL, then remove the main jet and the tube. There is now way you can clean the smallest holes in the tube with it still inside the carb. Job here is only half done.
Why did you not remove the float chamber? My Isy is about ten ye ars old so ther is not the small bolt beyond the base bolt on the float chamber. I had much touble with fuel even after fitting a filter in the pipe. Fially fitted new filter afte much cleaning of system and then used a fuel additive. Now seems ok. But that fitting ofthe carb is dreadfull?
I have a Husqvarna garden tiller with a Honda GC160 engine that is 3 years old. For the first 2 years it started on one or two pulls. I left gas in it over the winter and now it won't start. It will start and run for a few seconds when I spray carb cleaner in the top of the carb. I replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump and that didn't help. I replaced the carburetor and it still didn't help. I am now $75 into new parts and it still won't start. Any suggestions? Does the fuel pump need to be primed?
I have exact Honda mower like yours. Replaced with new carburetor, new air filter, new spark plug, and adjusted the ignition coil and checked key on flying wheel looks OK but the engine is still running with backfire and low rpm. Any advice? Thanks.
my mower has this exact engine, and from new had this same issue. I wonder if from factory the carbs are just dirty? If I use starter it starts every time and if I mow a couple of times in a week it's fine. When it sits for over 3 weeks we are back the same issue.
Hello! I have a Honda lawn mower and I cleaned the carburetor but it still does not run. Any ideas on other problems that may be causing my lawn mower to not run? Thanks
I cleaned the carburetor just like you described here and it WORKED - for about 10 minutes and THEN the engine gradually got slower and slower, and weaker and it finally stopped. My air filter (unlike yours) was very dirty and full of dead grass, so I cleaned it all out thoroughly. Do you have any idea what might be going on? I feel like I am so close to having this fixed!

I was surprised that, with as far as you got taking the mower apart, you assumed you had solved the issue & stopped at pretty external/superficial cleaning of the carb instead of going a few steps further to disassemble the carburetor & clean the inside of the bowl, float, jet, nozzle, etc. I found another video for a refresher on the carb cleaning steps you didn't address.

I would recommend any DIYer take pictures during the disassembly, it helps when you have that extra screw at the end, lol. Good video, thanks.

it is most likely bad gass with ethanol
Great work, great video!
thank you ! will do this to my honda Lawn mower .
Great video. Very clear and precise. What kind of cleaner did you use prior to cleaning the carburetor?
Very good video thanks.
you are welcome, glad you liked it !
Nice job….is any further disassembly of the carb required or it is totally cleaned via what you have shown. No need to examine interior float bulb ?
That's all I did…..
thank you for sharing
Are all the new caburetor metal on the Honda mowers?
good work. thank you.
So, basically you just needed to clean the carburetor with that spray?
Hi iam thinking of buying a new Honda mower that had auto choke how long will the thermal cartridge last before you Will need a new one
Nice instructional video. Very helpful. Is your accent from Uruguay or Argentina?
I just read the thread and saw you are from the Czech Republic. I was way off on my guess. :-)
Hello! I have a Honda lawn mower and I cleaned the carburetor but it still does not run. Any ideas on other problems that may be causing my lawn mower to not run? Thanks
use fresh clean fluid and check the spark plug to see that is has .28 to .30 gap.
What if the problem is my fuel tank? After I removed the gas tank the gas was not coming out with a steady flow. Thanks in advance.
I will look into doing this soon
I cleaned the carburetor just like you described here and it WORKED - for about 10 minutes and THEN the engine gradually got slower and slower, and weaker and it finally stopped. My air filter (unlike yours) was very dirty and full of dead grass, so I cleaned it all out thoroughly. Do you have any idea what might be going on? I feel like I am so close to having this fixed!
it sounds like fuel starvation…like it created vacuum in gas tank and couldn't pull more gas…maybe plugged vent ?
Awesome 👍
Good job thanks buddy
