Recovery from my first marathon - 12 DAYS OF NO RUNNING - Will I Survive?!

  • I captured the ups and downs of resting and recovering after running a marathon. With a couple of days of active recovery and exercise towards the end, I keep myself busy, talk through the mental impact of not training whilst resting, and the importance of taking a good few days off after a heavy race or training block!

    So happy for you, I had tears in my eyes, my foot has been giving me some bother so I haven't been able to run since a half marathon a week ago. I cannot wait to return to running!

    watching this for inspo on my 8th day post marathon. Last marathon I only took 3 days off, and I ended up feeling quite stale when I tried to race a few weeks later. Not injured at all - just stale. This time I want to rest more than I feel I need to so that I'm fresh when I come back. Two more days should do it!

    Just started watching some of your videos last week. I have been watching Ben is running too.
    As an ex pat from Bristol and a recently avid runner I love seeing the content from the UK.
    Both you and Ben have excellent running styles and your enthusiasm is inspiring to watch.

    What a journey. It shows how much exercise affects our moods. If ever I don't feel like working out, I remind myself how bad I would feel if I don't; how much better I will feel if I do, and how important it is to keep to the schedule! I was following along with the feels wanting you to get some exercise to feel better!
    I am so jealous of what you can eat! Cookies, tiffin, cheese on toast with ketchup! All my favourites.
    The music at 15:48 catches me out every time, my brain thinks Yes Roundabout is starting up! (That's the track Roundabout by the group Yes(It's on RUclips))

      So true! I’m honestly a much better person when I’m running most days 😅
      And no need to be jealous of the food.. you can enjoy it too! Everything in moderation, I don’t have cheese on toast 3 meals a day 7 days a week haha

    I always find it easier to run at any pace or distance then not running especially for such a long period of time. The longest that I have stopped running was 3 days after my first HM.

      I’d say I agree with you most of the time… but for 4 days at least after the marathon I don’t think I could physically run.. even if I wanted to 😂

      @@PhilyBowden It depends on the effort after my last marathon attempt to brake 3:00(unfortunately ended up with 3:05:13) i have tried to run after 3 days. Anyway even after one week i’ve had to stop for 2 more days and i think i was ok after 10 days. It’s obvious that running a 2:34 marathon like you demands more time of for recovery

    Do you have a stretching routine or something you can do on your rest days? I'm sure there are thousands of things you can be doing to augment your body without running?
    Anyway I'm enjoying watching your channel, even though I am NOT a runner. cheers : }

    Having seen this was really helpful. Thank you. It has been useful to have you not running for two weeks in mind. It is helpful to see how a training cycle looks in a person's life. I've just watched your 10,000 PBS video. Did you take time off/deload after that as well?

      Thanks Richard! I didn’t take a break after the 10,000 no, but I did take 6 days of just easy runs.. so first session is today exactly a week after the race - will see how the legs feel!

    Definitely rest. I’ve been injured from returning from a marathon too soon. You think you’re OK, but you just don’t know. Better to take 2 weeks off and come back fresh. Enjoy the time off!

    Must of felt amazing to start running again. I need to get myself out the door this evening as haven’t run since my HM…lost my mojo

    It is very hard isn't it, to go from huge amounts of training to nothing. But think how fired up you'll be! When you mentioned near the start of the vlog about fitting your training around work, could you do a vlog about when you get your runs squeezed in around work? I did a marathon block before covid and was running big volume (for me) and had to use annual leave to get in the big 15 mile+ days midweek.

      You’re so right and it’s so important! Sure I could definitely talk on that, I’ve been thinking of doing a day in the life so that could work quite well on a day I squeeze a run into work! It’s tough for those longer ones.. early mornings and an employer that’s willing to be a bit flexible pretty much!

    It's always a bit of an anti climax after a marathon. After being focussed on that one goal for such a long time you do feel somewhat lost until you find another goal. Only if you do rush it you end up either injured or even more frustrated that you can't run to the capacity that you'd like because your body's not ready.

    Did you feel really uncoordinated when you ran for the first time after the break? I find with a few days off I lose my running legs!

    How much “non running” exercise did you do? Likes walks etc or did you try and sit down and rest?

      Well the last couple of days were proper active recovery, so half an hour or so cardio at the gym, then that 20 mile ride. Other than that a couple of light country walks but nothing mega aside from getting myself from A to B the rest of the time!

    I found the rest after Manchester in October sooo frustrating...I lasted 6 days and then parkrun was too tempting 🤦‍♂️😂

    12 days with no running would have me smiling for those 12 days not like you complaining that you need to run. Couldn't you go out for a mile or two walks without breaking into a run?
