The next video I upload will be my marathon weekend! It is still being edited but I wanted to share this with you in the mean time! Thanks for the support.
Nick, I ran Austin on Sunday too, the course is extremely hilly, its not the best course for a first marathon. Marathons of this size have finishers below 2:10:00, the winner ran around 2:20:00. The cramping up is because of all the hills for sure. With hunger, you really don't feel it until around the night or till the next day. If you run another marathon, try to average down, that is: run the first part about 3 to 4 seconds slower than your goal pace, then if you're feeling good around mile 16, just go all out. With gels, find out what works for you during training. For me, I don't like the gel packs, I prefer the gummy like ones that are solid. Overall nice job, 3:59 is a great time for a first timer in Austin, that course is tough, and its constantly downhill and uphill and I'm sure you know, that takes a great deal of energy.
It wasn't the gel packs that caused cramping. It is because you did not take any form of electrolyte supplement or endurolytes. I made the same mistake on my 1st marathon
I was having that issue with my long run going past 16 miles. Since Nuun tablets and Clif bloks have saved me. From any of those problems and currently running 22miles this week. I will say one more thing though. You are supposed to drink when you take the chews or gels.
Ran a marathon last year and I had the exact same story as you! First 13 miles felt awesome!! Last 13 were filled with cramps and pain. I thought it was because I didn’t train properly but it’s interesting to see you have the same exact story as me doing all the training that you did
I've ran 7 marathon in my life. No more for me, nothing past 12 miles. The night before, I always eat a MR steak and spaghetti. It helps with the next day fixing the muscles, no muscle pain. Drink drink drink the week before. No cramps, yeah, use the gels only if you done it in the training, you don't need gels until past 12 miles. If it's a long bike ride like 100 miles, I had tootsie rolls for emergencies. I still remember after a bad crash and they were putting me under anesthesia, the nurse asked me about the tootsie roll under my gloves and I went on a spew of the power of the tootsie roll while going under.
Welcome to Oahu! I’m sure you’ve got things already planned out, but to just throw some more ideas into the mix, here’s my go-to’s when friends come to the island: Hikes: lanikai pillboxes and Manoa Falls are easy, Pu’u O Hulu or Kuliouou for something a little harder, koko head for a fun challenge Beaches: Yokohama or Waimea bay. The farther from Honolulu you can get the nicer they usually are. Touristy fun: the movie set tour at Kualoa ranch, zip lining on the north shore, the escape rooms at Breakout Waikiki. Have a great time here, regardless of what you do!!!
Sodium! Definitely make sure you get in enough sodium if you want to avoid cramping. It sounds gross but what really helps for cramps is pickle juice - they sell it in little shot bottles now. I took it on my first metric century bike ride when it was extremely hot and I didn't have any trouble at all. Nice job on your first marathon!
Nick, congratulations on the marathon. I ran a half-marathon once without training for it (while in Army) and planned to run a marathon. I'm not sure I'll get to that item on my bucket list. Very cool running non-stop for 26 miles.
Hey Nick just wanted to say thank you for the awesome videos you put out! I’m about to get on my plane to San Antonio for BT. Keep kicking ass as always!
Hey Nick , It would make sense that you would be cramping after consuming those packets. Here is my guess ... When you ate those packets, blood from the muscles you use for running was taken away and focused on digesting and absorbing those packets. Cramping occurs when blood flow to those muscles is hindered or taken away. Another attributing factor could be just based off how much you sweat. I know that from watching your other videos you basically "leak" tremendous amounts of water. Dehydration is a huge factor when it comes to cramps. Add a couple of packets of protein and sugar and water is instantly attracted to those nutrients taking more water away from your interstitial space and lastly from your cells. Anyway that's my guess ... keep up the great videos Nick they play a huge part in my life.
Cramps were from fatigue and not used to the load. I’d suggest you went out to quick which is why you experienced them early in the race. More volume and longer runs will stop this occurring next time. I’ve raced 12 Ironmans and 8 marathons
Also salt tablets help to prevent cramping. I'm not sure if gels would've caused cramping, usually it just irritates first time users stomach if they aren't used to them.
Same thing happened to me on my half Marathon. I contributed it to running on the road more. In training I did a healthy mix of train and walkway running but never blacktop.
Nick a reason for your cramp could be your levels of nerves/distress before the race which can cause your body temp to rise and your muscles to seize up(cramp). Just a suggestion
My dad missed Boston qualifying a couple decades ago by only 12 seconds and he attributes that to cramping at mile 20 due to energy gels that he hadn’t experimented with in training so I’m sure that contributed to it
A little cream of tartar in your water would have given you potassium which would have helped with the cramp. And next time, drink camomile tea each evening for a week before the marathon
Yeah those energy packs will do it bud. Gotta race exactly like you train including energy gels or snacks. But plenty of people have done what you did so no worries. Still a great time!

A sub 4 hour marathon is amazing, great job!
But your cramps usually don’t kick in until week four of each month. I know your body, dude.

Can't f**King wait for the marathon vid Nick! Long time sub

I'm really liking the running content on this channel. Keep up the good work.
It's gonna be cool to see you on the crossfit games on Netflix.
looking forward to that marathon footage. Also crazy to see how such a small decision can influence your results in that way.
Been watching for years nick, being from Hawaii I’m glad you came to visit man

It’s been 5 years since your post. Curious if you’ve run a marathon yet
@@michepriest Nope. The universe had other plans. Fairly certain it may be off the table now.
@@rufuslynks8175 sorry to hear. I’m glad you got to at least run a half
Hey Nick just wanted to say thank you for the awesome videos you put out! I’m about to get on my plane to San Antonio for BT. Keep kicking ass as always!
Last scene... golden! Enough of the winter.
Lived in Hawaii for 8 years before starting college a year ago in Dallas. This makes me want to go back to visit some high school friends.
Love your videos!! You’re an inspiration, keep up the good work 👊🏼
Did he open a beer with Copenhagen wintergreen
My friend did that this weekend when we went camping...savage.
Increase your sodium. Electrolytes or salt tablets.
The dip can bottle opener, Merica
just seen your ad on a phone app its awesome and motivating to see your growth since you were in korea
Congrats! Finishing a marathon is a big deal regardless of how long it takes.
Gosh, your videos are the best.
Welcome to Hawaii. Enjoy the beaches and dread the traffic

Love the vids watch them every day

Congrats man! Sucks about the cramping though

This video was dope from start to finish
Under 4 hours is still good. Congrats.
If your on Oahu, go to Jimbo Udon! ALSO go in a Long’s and get their local snacks! Keep up the awesome work!
7.5 hours is nice. Try 16 hours from Georgia to Johannasburg
Same thing happened to me on my half Marathon. I contributed it to running on the road more. In training I did a healthy mix of train and walkway running but never blacktop.

Jeezus X Chrissakes......what a load of shit. Save your"science" for IDIOTS- because that's the source.
Dede Xyz hahaha I learned it in school....must be an awful source. Fuck school then might just be a complete idiot like you
Was desperately awaiting a nick bare upload lol
You need to drink a lot of water when you eat the gel packs. And consume something with electrolytes to maintain that water
My dad missed Boston qualifying a couple decades ago by only 12 seconds and he attributes that to cramping at mile 20 due to energy gels that he hadn’t experimented with in training so I’m sure that contributed to it
I miss vlogs like this from u
I love your vids man !!!
Pedialyte is normally the go to before a race like that....will save you late into the run!! Still an awesome time tho, looking forward to the video!
Awesome video man! I’m transitioning out of the military and love your content! Hopefully one day we can collaborate in a video
Poppin' tops with the ol' wintergreen can, classic!
Im stationed in Hawaii 🔥🙏🏽 Schofield Barracks
Hey man! I’m in the army and I just got stationed in Hawaii! I’ve been here for about a month. But it’d be awesome if we could meet up
You better come back and visit me and Gomez..... NICK BARE
You shoulve got some b roll out the window of the plane, I love Hawaii. Congrats on the marathon!
A little cream of tartar in your water would have given you potassium which would have helped with the cramp. And next time, drink camomile tea each evening for a week before the marathon
You should do kiko head hike or one of the pillbox hikes while you’re in Oahu, great views at the end!
Koko head*
0:53 hilarious😂 I was annoyed by how close that guy was. Couldn’t even imagine how you felt.
Welcome to Oahu hopefully I get to run into you
Copenhagen Wintergreen yeaaah boi !!!!
I'm doing his 300 workout in a few days and making a video =)
Try sipping on some pedialyte during your next marathon. The electrolytes help a ton with cramps.
Great video
Ayy papa puertorrican music is always dope
Cramps were probably from a lack of salt in your body. Should balance out quickly tho after from the food you ate.
enjoy Hawaii man but are you going to the Arnold?
Nice work! It's about being the best in the moment. Next time, though, salt :)
what counts is you running and finishing a marathon. next one will bee better! 🎉
Amazing👊👊💪
4:58 Crackin that beet open with a tin, atta boy
I hate Honolulu airport with a passion. I’ve flew through there way too many times with layovers less than an hour every single time...
Song at 3:20? I’ve heard it in a few of your videos but it never says what it is.
You know its a good one when the intro is the chili peppers
You need to collaborate with Steve cook bro. You and him super beasts.
When will the Lost t-shirts be available?
What's up with the off editing and song choices? Nick Bare.... come on bro. Also didn't know you had a girl man! Awesome happy for you guys.
Yea I had a double header soccer game and I took gatorade chews for the first time in between and I cramped at the end of the 2nd game
Yeah those packs have good amount of sugar. Usually long distance runs + those sugars is a death trap 😩
Being given a lays in hawaii... It's all fun and games until they're stacked so high you can barely see over them...
What version of "three little birds" was that?
AHH Nick - Nothing new on race day!!!
Salt sticks lad, salt sticks. Solve them cramps
Gonna have to do another marathon this year to get the 3:30 timing!
Have the last meal a medium size pizza the preavious day
Yeah those energy packs will do it bud. Gotta race exactly like you train including energy gels or snacks. But plenty of people have done what you did so no worries. Still a great time!
more sodium= no cramping
gotta jump off the rock at waimea. and eat a spam musubi from 7-11
Legs straight sore asf rn 🤣
Maybe experiment with sodium!
Fan meet up of some sort while you’re down here, please? Lol
That the Bellows beach?
Army Murses FTW
At first glance I thought your video title said something else 😅
Nice vid
YUTTTTTTTTTTTTT
Drink water! Beat the heat, beat the heat!
Beet juice all week before race
Damn the one time I’m not in Hawaii
You can drink on the beach 🏖️ really
One day a triathlon?
The cramps came from lack of electrolytes brother.
We have the same name which is frickin baller
The cramps may have been caused by low potassium.
come train at Martinez gym on schofield
