      Skyrim is interesting in how it uses the dragonborn (us) to see the politics and philosophies, and puts us front and center. Basically asking the player "what do you think?" People hate that skyrim gives you a class before you even begin lol but even with your status you're still not a divine or above their laws.
      Fallout new Vegas does this with its factions, if you trade or aren't neutral to the world if you pick sides the other side won't even talk to you, tribalism at its very nature. This is how I feel sometimes being a born again Christian and seeing how divided everyone is over secondary issues. But in skyrim we have allies, everything is handed to the player but Bethesda added a philosophy that many don't consider (the way of wisdom.) Basically becoming a scholar neutral to the world and its politics.

Elisif is naive, but not stubborn and blind, and she takes the dangers threatening her hold serious. Just a bit too serious. Idgrod is relatively good and properly concerned about what transpires in Morthal. Igmund's role in the Markarth Incident doesn't put him in a good light, and he might share some responsibility for the Stormcloak uprising, but Ulfric's conduct was likewise nebulous and unflattering. Siddgeir is the only one who is outright bad for his hold and a contemptible man, but not to the extent of some Stormcloaks. And Balgruuf is the hero Skyrim deserves. A lord who isn't immediately skeptical of the dragon threat, protects and reassures his people, and supports the dragonborn without question. A welcome change from your typical fantasy lord.
      The Stormcloaks, on the other hand, have their leader Ulfric, who can't read between the lines to see the empire is stalling for time until the next Aldmeri attack, or see how his rebellion weakens them both in the face of the looming threat. Skald is a petty bigot. Laila's moniker 'law-giver' is a laughable misnomer when her hold is ruled by the Blackbriars. It doesn't matter if they had orginally dedicated their whole life to becoming a student of the College of Winterhold or if they were the town drunk that you beat in a fistfight... they WILL drop everything they ever knew and everyone they've ever known and loved for no reason to dick around with the Blades when you bring them to Delphine.
      All of this effort is done with the intention of bolstering their numbers from 2, to a -pathetic- staggering 5 members strong.

There are objectively great games based on longevity and reviews and there will always be some person who hates it. RPGs require some imagination, creativity, and roleplay (duh). You're the type that needs a relatively linear story. In Skyrim, you can play the whole game going on radiant questions, selling pelts, and building a house without joining any faction or doing the main quest. There are new interesting factions like the cannibals (you can join) that I just discover and many interesting quests after years of playing. People just don't take their time and rush through things. They don't read the lore books in the game which makes things more interesting. They're shallow players.

    How I would have written the questline:
    When confronted by Delphine, you can agree to kill Paarthurnax, and the quest plays out as normal. The Greybeards no longer allow you into High Hrothgar, Delphine will give the radiant dragonquests, and Esbern will give the radiant Word Wall quests since the Greybeards won't anymore.
    - OR -
    You refuse; Delphine makes a scene and tells you you're no longer welcome in Sky Haven Temple, to which you reply that if she thinks she can make the Dragonborn leave by force she's welcome to try. Esbern meekly interjects and tries to deescalate the argument, reminding Delphine that it is technically your temple, and that the Blades serve the Dragonborn, not the other way around. She makes even more of a scene, furious that Esbern would take "your side" even though he wants Paarthurnax dead, too. Delphine ultimately denounces what she now sees as a mockery of the Blades, basically saying "Fine, I'll find a way to do it myself" and leaves Sky Haven Temple. The quest updates, with the new objective being to tell Paarthurnax about what happened.
    You arrive at the Throat of the World and as you're talking to Paarthurnax, you're ambushed by Delphine and paralyzed so you can't intervene. She reveals her plan was to follow you since you and the Greybeards are the only ones who could open the path to him, and kill Paarthurnax herself while you're immobilized in the immediate vicinity, so that his soul will be devoured by you without your say in the matter. She begins attacking Paarthurnax while you helplessly watch, only Paarthurnax doesn't fight back--he just sits there and takes it. Delphine is confused and angrily asks why he isn't defending himself, to which he explains all the stuff he's told us, that he'd rather die than misue the Voice and perpetuate the misdeeds of the Dov against mankind. She figures fine, this just makes her job easier. She continues attacking, but suddenly stops before the killing blow; Paarthurnax asks her why she hesitates, and tells her to go on and finish it. Delphine finally decides that she can't do it, and Paarthurnax is spared.
    While the quest is coming to a close, you ask her if this means she's going back to join the Blades again, but she decides it's probably for the best that she goes her own way for a while--she's intrigued and inspired by Paarthurnax's reaction, and humbly asks to learn more about his and the Greybeards' philosophies, to which Paarthurnax accepts. From then on she's a recruitable follower who hangs out in High Hrothgar for the rest of the game, and Esbern becomes the new leader of the Blades and gives the radiant dragon quests.
    There, I fixed it.

I knew right then the guy was a moron and decided the Blades were idiots for making me do their stupid stuff. Then after you actually meet and learn from Paarthurnax, there's no way you can choose the Blades over him unless you too are a moron.

    Honestly, the lack of an option to spare Parthuunax shows how little Bethesda trusts the player to make their own story. Regardless of whether you kill Pathuunax or not, the fact that Delphine will want him dead remains a constant and will be a part of her character 'nuance'. But being incapable of skirting around her demands in any capacity is contradictory to the point of an RPG and only goes to show that Bethesda, in all likelihood, doesn't care about the player. It's one of the reasons why the Parthuunax Conundrum or whatever it's called was such an essential part of my load order that I had it in all my variations, because it allowed a more dynamic main story each time depending on the character I played.

    • @mewntay230
      @mewntay230 2 года назад +7

      Sometimes a story isn't meant to coddle the player and give them exactly what they want. It's more realistic. It's meant to be a tough and hard decision. It's meant to be sort of unfair. I don't think Bethesda gives a damn what players do with their story and I don't think they'd purposely place restrictions because some kid on his XBOX didn't make a choice they wanted them to make, lmao.

      There IS an option to spare him. It's not killing him. Yes, you lose the support of the Blades, but Parthuunax is still alive.

    • @physical_insanity
      @physical_insanity Год назад

      @@SuddenReal That's why they should make you work for it. Like in Fallout New Vegas, only certain outcomes are possible if you do all the right things in prior quests beforehand and it should be the same here. There is literally no excuse for not doing this, especially when it increases replay value a thousand fold. It's bad writing, especially when telling the Blades you'll refuse killing Parthunaax warrants such a pathetic response from them, and forces us to break character. The fact it's only more evidence of the Blades using us rather than serving us only compounds the overall issue, making it sheer pain to experience over and over again.

    Delphine was slowly manipulating and taunting the Dragonborn since Day 1. She never cared about the dragon crisis. Instead of stopping Alduin she was more focused about her own goals. An example is when Esbern was discussing Alduins Wall. She always gave you orders as if there couldn't be other options. That's why I left her at Sky Haven Temple. She was only getting in the way.

      when the blades ask the Dovahkiin to kill Paarthurnax it's because they're looking at the long-term because prior to the events of Skyrim the Dragons Were near Extinction meaning Paarthurnax had no corrupting influences from his fellow Dovah, but that's all changed when Alduin returned and begin resurrecting the deceased dovah which makes me doubt the Dovahkiin would be able to wipe them all out again in their lifetime (since the dovahkiin's canonical races likely nord) I think all the blade want to do is ensure the dovah don't have leadership. because when the Dovahkiin defeat Alduin the Dovah still have a general (Paarthurnax) to fall back on as someone who could lead them in taking back control over Skyrim.

Told you what you needed to hear and was always honest with your character. All I'll say is if Caius Cosades had been in charge of defending the emperor in Oblivion then the Mythic Dawn wouldn't have made it within 1000 feet of the Imperial city because of his information gathering network. Hero of Kvatch would still be sitting across from Valen Dreth getting his feelings hurt by his taunting.
      Caius for all his faults took his job seriously and in his area of responsibility had informants everywhere and in key positions to pass him information. The only one of his informants to get compromised was the priestess in Vivec that you had to break out of prison but that was after Caius had already been recalled due to politics and his drug habit. And even in that case Caius seems like he had a plan for if and when that happened because he told you exactly what to look for if she were snatched.
      Hell even the fall of the Blades against the Aldmeri dominion is telling. Every last operative the blades had in the dominion was compromised and killed. It doesn't even sound like the Blades planned for that possibility. But I think Caius would have planned for it and thought of counter measures at the very least. Caius flourished and got his job done in Morrowind with all the great houses seeking to cut each others throats and all the guilds trying to infiltrate each other and such. Not to mention the Morag Tong working. He had to be good at his job.

    However, Paarthunax will be around for much longer. He will be able to teach future Dragonborns the Thuum. The Blades will inevitably fade and disappear. Paarthunax won’t. He could even reform the surviving dragons, and help them overcome their nature as he did.
    The way I saw it, Paarthunax was paying penance for his crimes during his time as Alduin’s right wing dragon. He was harboring and teaching humans the Thuum to the day the Dragonborn arrives, and teaches them more as well. He helps us permanently end Alduin, something the Blades never could have done. He harbors the other dragons and begins to help them overcome their nature. In essence, when future Dragonborn come, he will teach them and continue to raise new champions.

Then again, the main issues after the werewolf episode are brought on by you becoming a werewolf, and slaughtering a bunch of people after Skjor dies. So maybe just saying no and not finishing the storyline is best anyway.
