My Gentle Pitt Bull Platoon 1045 June 15, 1978 we said good night to chesty every night on that island it was the best part of the day when you could go to sleep and know that Chesty was watching over you . I love the Corps !!!
As a Marine, I thank you for the nice sentiments about our fearless leader. However, I would kindly and respectfully ask you to capitalize the “M” in Marines.
In 1967 General Puller stopped at the E M club 12 area Camp Pendleton to have a few beers with the troops . After downing a few he said , Now I'm going to the base brig & spend some time with the Marines there .
Carlton King -- Do you remember what month? I was at Pendleton for some pre-deployment training in 1967. I hung out at a NCO club. Wednesday night was bingo night. How cool it would have been to meet him. I met the other Marine, LtGen Victor Krulak in Hawaii. I was delivering some documents to the 4th deck at his headquarters. Ran up the ladder, hit the landing on the 4th deck and nearly knocked some little guy down. The little guy was wearing three stars. I had visions of the gates of hell opening. He asked me if I always ran up the ladder. I said yes general. He said be more careful and continued on his way. Yeah, it would have been cool to have added Chesty to the Brute
I attended a speech given by Chesty P on Thanksgiving Day 1967 on Parris Island, he was a great man and Marine,so, whoever thumbs downed Chesty is lower than a worthless piece of whale s--t and knows it! That's why they did what they did!!
At ease Marines. .. It is most likely an armchair commando who knows zilch about a true legend and God send Leader...soooo...as much as I feel it is an insult to our Honor ....it isn't worth wasting our Pride on such cockroaches. ..
'72-76, Semper Fi. We said "Goodnight Chester Puller, wherever you are" every night from June 23, 1972 to September 22, 1972, Parris Island, Platoon 265
The man had an unbelieveable career. 5 Navy Crosses! I felt fortunate to have gotten the geedunk ribbons I have! Nobody looked more like a Marine than Chesty Puller.
I've never seen someone who looked the part more than Chesty Puller. May he rest in peace and I'm sure he's in charge of guarding the streets of heaven with the other Marines.
I always wondered if St. Peter just threw up his hands and handed the muster sheet to General Puller. I'm glad you also think the General is in charge.
I was once caught with my hands in my pockets by my First Sgt. He barked "MARINE, JUST WHAT IN THE F DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING? MARINES DON'T PUT THEIR HANDS IN THEIR POCKETS!" I stated "First Sgt., I heard Chesty Puller once said that a man with empty pockets and cold hands is too dumb to be a Marine". He said "As you were", and never gave me crap again. Did he really say that? We may never know, but I felt like a badass, and we know the legend of Chesty Puller is a great one indeed. Goodnight Chesty, wherever you are.
Let's see: joined at tail end of WW1, served five years in Haiti, took part in most of the major battles in the Pacific during WW2 (if not all of them), forced to retire afterward due to health concerns (with a mess of 🏅), AND he volunteered for duty in Vietnam? Good Lord, this man was HARD CORE! He should be on a recruiting poster.
Born in West Point, VA ~ just down from Saluda and Urbanna ~ he was Grand Marshall of the Oyster Festival parade in late '60s (still held today) where I saw him in a restored Willys Jeep. Ramrod straight, seated at attention, he acknowledged the warm applause from the crowd ~ HIS crowd.
My father served under Chesty Puller at Chosin Reservoir. To this day, even 67 years after the fact, he still won't talk about it. He always changes the subject whenever I try to ask him about his service there. Must have truly been Hell on earth.
John Collins I hear you some people are born for war I guess. Supposedly in the chosin reservoir- Chesty said when being surrounded by Chinese divisions- "We've got em right where we want them". Hoorah Chesty hoorah
It’s called staying strong. 💪 A lot of what they had to deal with will break a man. They didn’t call them the Frozen Chosin for nothing. By the way I like the Quadrant you’re sporting. I have been traveling since 1979, and earned my Quadrant in 2014.
I like how the modern Marine Corp still clings to its old badass history. Truth be told if Chesty was in this weak MC of today. He would have been relieved of command. Like that brave Major was.
@casey Bryant - As Marine I understand your comments and I’ll repeat what Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller said, “Old Breed? New Breed? There’s not a damn bit of difference as long as it’s the Marine breed”. Only a Marine can understand that statement!! Semper Fi do or die…
I stood a IG inspection on Kadina Airbase Okinawa, 1955 he landed in an old chopper in his Ike Jacket which was banned, couldn’t go on Liberty in it. Now he was a MARINE!!!! Semper Fi
It may be appropriate to mention that his son (Lew Puller, Junior) was a highly decorated and grievously wounded Marine infantry officer and his son-in-law (Michael Downs) attained Flag rank and led Marines in the Battle of hue City.
I spent "some time" in the Corps. One of the most sacred treasures I will ever have is the signed copy of "Unfortunate Son" of Lewis Puller Jr by himself. It was in 1992 on CamLej in the Base Exchange upon returning from the Gulf War. I was in line over noon chow, and returned late. Once I explained why and showed my book, I gave some pushups and called it a day. "Jr" shot himself about a year later dealing with his father's stigma.
Thank you, Lt. General Puller, for your service for this great country of ours. You, sir, should have the title of "The Ultimate Marine." 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲 🗽🗽🗽🗽🗽 ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️ 💂💂💂💂💂 😁😁😁😁😁
To this day groups of Marines otherwise known as a "gaglefuck" preform a ritual dance to summon the ghost of chesty puller in order to help them get their long awaited kills
I ran across this video, after watching "MEGAN LEAVEY" __ I know it's "Hollywood" but I'm a dog lover, and Sgt. Rex was one of the greatest Marines ever. I was in Task Force Tarawa in Iraq. Just watch the movie. A lot of Marines gave their lives to defend. I am no good at this typing this kind of stuff. I'll never forget the night We got Pvt. Jessica Lynch out of An Nasiriyah, what a crazy couple of days and weeks
I think it was probably the right decision to make him retire. He'd suffered a stroke. He never would have willingly left the Corps... His poor wife deserved a little time with the old man. It's disgusting the Navy didn't give him 100 percent pay in retirement. Old guy was worried about money until his last days. This is a man who led and marched with his Marines well into his 50s. Unfortunately the military is slow to rectify these things.
The "Thumbs Down" may have been because of the inaccuracy of this video - or certainly if we are to believe Chesty Puller himself, via his autobiography. He was riffed out after WWI as a sergeant, but given the opportunity to go to Haiti as a second lieutenant, as a combat adviser to the Haitian Army in putting down a revolt. This was done with the deal of "...if you live, you might even be able to stay in the Corps, and there's even an outside chance that you'll be able to keep your bar...". The experience played a defining role in his subsequent service, especially on Guadacanal. Also - I am pretty sure that the video is equally inaccurate about his "not going overseas in WWI, but truthfully, I don't have enough specific recollection of that part of his autobiography, to be certain, and I don't want to add one error on top of another. These people could have at very least taken the time and trouble to read "Marine", by Lewis B Puller, before claiming to do a biography of him. Geoff Rohde - former Marine
As a Marine Chesty Puller was a legend. The sad thing is that men like Puller and Major Greg pappy Boyington both legendary men of the Corps could never serve today. The Corps like all the other branches has fallen to wokeism ... it is sad
This video was way too short. G'night Chesty, wherever you are. Time after time our enemies underestimate the USA because they don't realize that we have the kind of men that simply don't exist in their countries. Men like Chesty, Jimmy Doolittle, John Basilone, Richard Winters, all the men of the 8th Air Force, the men of D-Day, and on and on and on.
Goodnight Chesty, wherever you are...

When it thunders, it's just chesty puller and some Marines on a motivation run.
