That depends on the version you're playing. With live servers, it's my understanding MOST story content can be solo'd. Not sure if all of it can, though.

If you just want to finish the original game, which would be rank 5, and the shadow lord fight. That happens at level 50. That used to be the cap level. Then raised to 75. Now it's even higher. Speed runners can beat the shadow lord in under 6 hours, by themselves, with use of trusts. There is tons of content, and will take some time to do all.
I used to play 2004-2006, and had over 2000 hours in my original character. My highest job at the time was 71, when the cap was 75. Back then the only job that was soloable was beastmaster. Now any job can solo. I've played now for about 250 hours, and my highest job is currently 88. And I have yet to team up with anyone. They made the game go so much faster now.
