Part of the magic for FFXI for me is how much creativity you can play with your job with sub classes. A RDM / NIN sub is a amazing solo while a RDM / WHM is a amazing healer etc.
I used to be a ghetto healer as SAM/DNC for merit parties. It was hilariously good with a Soboro Sukehiro.
@@cbrown596 SAM/WHM meme in full effect lmao
The first boss of FFXI is installing it, but it's worth it.
Loved FF11 back in the day. It was definitely built in the era of MMO gaming where the player *had* to rely on others if they ever wanted a chance to make any progress, and that progress was slow. And if you messed up, you lost that progress and had to work to make it back up again. It made every level gained that much more special, because you knew you *worked your ass off* for it. Every few levels brought with them a new ability or weapon skill or gear that boosted your overall power.
Vana'diel made sure you knew that you were never completely safe when you left city walls, and it taught you the hard way every time to not take anything for granted. If you weren't prepared when you stepped out on your journey, you paid the price down the line. It's gotten much more player friendly nowadays, but FF11 in its heyday was a brutally tough game that made getting to the endgame that much more sweeter.
One of the memories I won't forget was the sense of community. Over time, you got familiar with seeing the same names in party lists, or shouts for Limit Break Mission prog. FFXIV feels very lonely to me by comparison, and the realm hopping feature hasn't help build that feeling of community.
FFXI is not just my first MMO but my first Final Fantasy game. I remember watching the review for it on XPlay (still going by Extended Play back then) because it had recently launched in the US with the Rise of the Zilart expansion. I remember being so excited for it and waiting patiently for the download to finish over the crappy dial-up line we had; I stayed home from church that day because it finished on a Sunday.
I remember the Brady Game's official strategy guide for the game and needing to use it just to figure out what I was doing half the time (and even then, the guide had some really bad advice, like pairing Warrior with a White Mage sub-job for soloing, or saying the Avatar fights, that rewarded you with the summon or a piece of gear, could only be fought once...because I'm pretty sure the guide writer didn't know you could only do the fight once every 24 hours).
It was slow, it was grindy, I remember making my main a White Mage (and eventually a Scholar) simply because healers were always in need and getting into a group or forming one was easiest as a healer; I also made a fair bit of coin acting as a Taxi service with the teleportation spells.
But I also remember the people I made friends with back then. It wasn't a very big group, but they were tight-nit, fun, and even helped me start my love of RP.
I cried when it Echoes of Vana'diel was announced. Hell, I cried when the FFXI event with Iroha happened (despite the fact that I stopped playing before her expansion was even released). I am probably going to cry my god damned eyes out as I play through the raid, just getting the chance to put on that old coat and walk through the memories of 11 years of my life.
Played this for almost 20 years. Ended up 99 in every job and few REMA weaps. Loved seeing someone try it for the first time.
You can pretty much solo everything now, if you do run into a problem, any vet will gladly run through it with you. Just grab a linkshell (FFXI's Free Company) and there are a ton of noob friendly ones that have people helping out. Its by far the most friendly MMO Community out there. Oh and stay away from Asura the most populated server... I prefer Bahamut after going through a bunch of servers.
You can also fix a lot of FFXI's clunky design with Windower or Ashita launchers that fix most of it.
No way i found Chris Titus here 😱
“Obviously I don’t expect anything on the difficulty of a savage raid~”
My brother in vana’diel…a alliance boss (raid boss for ffxiv people) took up to 30 hours (18 hours for some) to ATTEMPT to kill…people got physically Ill and to a point SE had to put out a letter of apology and nerf it down cause it’s “mechanics” where for a lack of a better word “problematic” to say the least…
Is this the legendary Absolute Virtue?

That is epic. I watched my friend fight Pandemonium Warden who was also really tough.
I hear about these long fight times and I wonder how do people stay up for that long?! I get tired after doing a single FF14 fight for 30 minutes 😅
I love this game so much, 20yrs playing!
I picked up 11 last year in sept. At first I was hella confused and kinda hated it, but with some time and finding beginner linkshells, I'm having the time of my life! I hit my first lvl 99 job (dnc) lately, and I've made it from ROZ-close to mid aht urghan. It's great honestly, the community is *very* alive
And today... you give up or still play?
As a ff14 player with about 5.5k hours into the game, i've grown a litttttllleee bit bored (i still absolutely adore 14) but endwalker endgame hasn't really captured my interest currently... so i've been trying to jump around other mmos like GW2 WoW, ESO etc. Don't get me wrong those other mmos are fine but i've seriously come down to the conclusion that job changing systems are just toooo damn good.
So i tried FF11 a week ago.... dude i've been sleeping on this game so hard, im fully addicted, i was so ignorant to 11 because i thought "ew old game" but its actually one of the most unique and interesting mmos i've played in such a long time and i think its because it doesn't feel similar to anything else really.
It's the best game that has ever been created, it's living art, a historical point of gaming history that should be perserved as a token of the best MMORPG ever to have been master crafted. It's worth more than the American constitution and amendments 😂
I'm glad to finally find a player that likes both FF14 AND FF11 😂
I picked up XI about 6 months ago and it's been quite fun. It definetely has it's low points, frustrations and annoyances but when it gets good, it's really good. But i do recommend playing the game with someone as that would alleviate the chores of waking around, being lost and grinding. Makes for quite a good time.
I've still not completed the game myself, i believe i'm in one of the expansions (tbh, they kind of blend together as a lot of them don't limit you from starting it's story before completing other expansions, but a guide solves that problem)
I would love to see you experience XI but ofc, if you don't find it very fun or isn't for you then feel free to pick up any other game, but it would be quite enjoyable to see your particular experience through the game.
I will resub right now and carry your ass through the entire damned game if you need me too. FFXIV easily has the best story, while FFXI's story is still in the top 5...but FFXI has the best combat, especially once you hit post 75. I can't deal with all that click spamming in XIV and Wowclones.
I've played the game off and on for the full 20+ years. I always come back. Its not just nostalgia. When you get an item, it has *weight*. I have weapons/pieces of gear that are old enough to vote. Its not (with few exceptions) all ilvl, what number is the bigger new number, crap.
as a veteran player (2002-2012ish) I jumped back in in 2020 and made a FRESH lv 1 to see what had changed and solod all the DLC up thro Seekers of Aldouin with trusts
I beat all of the XI expansions over the course of 6 months last year as a first time player. The vast majority of it you can solo and you'll only need help for the some of the final boss fights in the latter expansions (Seekers of Adoulin, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel) and most of the boss fights in the final expansion, The Voracious Resurgence. Otherwise, the rest of the main story content is soloable and can be done in about 6 months of playtime. As far as asking for help, by just shouting for help in some of the more popular zones, it usually takes around 10 minutes to find someone willing to help you. It's really not that bad, XI players are really friendly, so if you say, "Hey, I need help with this boss from this expansion quick" you can usually find someone willing to help in like 10 minutes.
I hope you continue this, I'm interested in XI as well as a XIV player who started mid shb
Playing XI for the first time as an adult, I gotta say. I kinda love how obtuse the game is at times. It really makes you take for granted the little things that 14 has. NOW! I don't say that as a bad thing at all. Something about figuring out how the game works and venturing off to do something that seems really simple in 14 IE: Go to a location, fight a monster, activate things, and return with the item. feels so much more rewarding in 14 because I really had to think and plan because shit fucken hits hard in this game! I struggled, but I didn't despair. I strived. And after I handed in the quest item (via trading like you would another player) I felt so rewarded. That I! with little to no hand holding was able to complete the mission. It made me feel good about myself!
TLDR: XI gives you that satisfying you get after beating a tough boss from a Souls game.
I started FFXI in 2004 and I still love it more than FFXIV but I also acknowledge that it's easier to convince a NEW person to try XIV than to try XI. It's not that I don't want to suggest they try XI - because I would genuinely love to help someone play through XI if they were interested - it's just that I recognize that most people will be more receptive to a modern game that holds your hand and is more button mashy than an older game that expects you to figure things out and is slower-paced (back when XP parties with 5 other people were a requirement, you could actually have a conversation while grinding! Imagine trying to do that in the middle of a FFXIV dungeon or raid)
People do it all the time 14 is the king deal with it
FFXI's controls are the best part of the game. I loved using the keyboard to control the game. You aren't supposed to use the mouse, ever.
FFXI is a shell of its former self now but it used to be the best game in the world. 2003-2009 will always be special to me because of this game
4:50 thus far I have not heard a problem the game is not made for the faint of heart and that’s why I love it
This made me smile, thanks for giving my favorite Online FF a chance. I laughed so hard on your install commentary
That whole mindset of "I'm gonna' play this damn game whether I (also, Squenix) like(s) it or not" is a very useful mindset for the rest of the game.
Please try Horizon XI (probably the best custom FFXI server with gameplay locked in when the game peaked in 2006, and yes it forces you to work with other players).
Thanks for your time.
Coming from someone who played 11 on NA launch, and couldn't get in to 14 (Despite trying on 5 or 6 occasions, I just couldn't), I'd love to see you explore more 11. It was very much designed for a larger player base, with stuff like the party finder, the "Call for help" option, and linkshells.
I was 13 when I first played Final Fantasy XI back in 2004, and I loved it!! At the time, the graphics were top notch and the general structure was unique and very detailed. This brings back so much nostalgia
As someone in Endwalker endgame and interested I am very happy to your opinions on the game and hope to see you play more of it!
Is endwalker bad?
@helloguy8934 No, the story is great. But when you've done that there isn't much to do in the Endgame besides Island Sanctuary and relics. Which a lot of players don't do.
@@aeigm Man I'm way too far away from that
For the retail story experience, i recommend getting more of the streamlined mechanics like the warp ring, and having a few jobs that can sub for invis and spells like that. Huntin4Games is the best channel for getting into the game now, and i had a ton of fun listening to all of his vids. The story does largely become a personalized movie with your character after you are leveled enough to just push through; and the story is massive.
FFXI was my chosen MMO. Since i player EQ back in the day, the setup was somewhat more familiar to me than WoW. Although WoW became my business and i would only play it to make real money.
FFXI is not for the faint of heart, the hours spent traveling and the fear of death always around the corner...spending 1 hr running across the world and then dying to a mob. Taking 6 hrs to unlock my chocobo...i do miss the jobs though, i hope FFXIV makes a rune fencer.
Where did you get the footage for the jobs intro within the first minute? It's from a very old video i used to love watching but i forgot the name.
Most of your presumptions are impressively accurate, however...
“Obviously I don’t expect anything on the difficulty of a savage raid...”
The difficulty of fights varies over time, but when they release something hard (and they have many times and continue to do so) the difficulty is far beyond anything FFXIV has offered. When a particularly hard fight comes out it won't be beaten for months, in some cases those months have turned to years...
Another distinction is that a new player with a good attention span/competence could jump into FFXIV and get to work on Savage or even Ultimate content in not too long, it would take far far, longer to do so on FFXI as you really need an understanding of mechanics and all the jobs and what they can do; the skill ceiling is high.
I don't think I ever used the mouse while playing FFXI. I played this game with the numpad for movement/menu navigation and left hand for skill macros.
very unique control scheme, at least for me
I played XI for 12 years at NA release. When I started, I was single, living in the Navy barracks overseas with lots of time to pour in. I loved my time in the game and wouldn't trade it for the world, but I can admit that the game absolutely aged like milk. At the time, and being that it was my first time playing an online game, the design was livable.
However, once I started playing XIV, I just couldn't go back. By then, the ridiculously grindy nature had worn me down over the course of more than a decade. By the time I got into XIV, I was a married father and had put on rank in the military. With the increased responsibilities of being a father and a leader, I just couldn't put in the kind of time XI required anymore.
One thing I can genuinely say I miss from XI that has no real comparison in XIV is the concept of "playing support". XIV adheres to the holy trinity of tank, healer, damage dealer. DNC is fun, but its still a damage dealer. In XI, I was a career Bard with all my RME (relic, mythic, and empyrean) weapons and musical instruments. I miss playing a job that is dedicated to support. Especially considering how badass XI Bard was with 4 songs juiced by Gjallarhorn for buffs and nearly unbeatable magic accuracy for debuffs. I miss it, but I certainly don't want to go back to it.
Man you were a champ of a Bard! I was a RDM main on Cerberus back in the day. Our linkshell leader was in the military, we had such a choice group of people. I had so much time as a young teenager, I played all the time. Especially after I moved from Hawai'i to Washington DC, which was tough (talk about culture shock lol).
I agree, while I wouldn't trade anything for the immense grind and difficulty back then, today with other priorities, I wouldn't do it again. That said I just jumped on my character in retail for the first time in years to relive some nostalgia and maybe continue the story as someone from FFXIV recommended me to do.
You're right, the job variations were unique, fun, creative, and really stood out. Skillchains and magic bursts were an interactive blast. I play FFXIV now, but feel I've run low on things to do that actually really interest me. In FFXI, that never happened. Still, the story of XIV is excellent. I wish XIV took more inspiration from XI in terms of co-operation, challenge, and rewards. Thanks for sharing your story!
The devs have said the sub fee is what keeps FFXI going. They do get asked for a bundle option from time to time, and was in the past indirect in their answers but generally circled back to the need to keep the game financially viable.
For some background, FFXI was supposed to wrap in 2015 with Rhapsodies of Vana'diel scenario but due to outpuoring of support from fans, they kept updates, albeit fairly small scale going for years, culminating in last year's 20th anniversary in 2022-2023 which saw a brand new storyline introduced.
After that anniversary ended, we're in a lull where there is no roadmap for FFXI, outside of upgrading the servers and upgrading the very small dev team's tools to keep it going. And it does feel like we're in a bit of limbo.
If perhaps the game ever finally enters into maintenace mode with zero updates maybe they can consider combining sub fees. for now, i feel like it has a seperate sub fee for SE to justify keeping it around as a separate thing.
As a vet of 11 and casual 14 player, this made me so happy and nostalgic
One thing to say, as many games of the same time, it was meant to be played along with it's manual, something the modern installation i don't think it comes with.
You can easily do every story bit on your own with trusts. Maybe the very last boss of the last story you will need help. But that is at least 1-2 months away.
The combat system gets a lot faster later on with gear switching and sets. which is one of the very unique things about the game. You have different gear sets for each situation and change them via macros.
With this system, some rings or items from 20 years ago are still BiS in some gear sets.
Pulling off skillchains and magic bursts was a lot of fun back then
Also be happy. Back in the day there wasn't map vendors and most maps were acquired via quest or finding them in a chest.
On top of being old as hell, its important to remember that this game also launched fully playable on PS2. Great video.
FFXI is the best MMO, no contest. One of the best FF titles, too.
also, the download process isn't even hard, wdym? You download the things, run the exe and it does 90% of the legwork for you minus opening POL and updating the game..
edit: to edit this more as I'm watching your video, on the subject of warping: the easiest thing you can do to return to your home point is to snag a warp ring from one of your nation's Conquest vendors. You don't need to be any particular nation rank/level to get one, you just need 5k-ish conquest points which is insanely easy to get from the start. To do that, you can talk to the same NPCs and tell them you want to participate in Conquest/your nation's Conquest campaign and they give you a buff called Signet. What Signet does is, aside from a few stat boosts like some minor accuracy/evasion buffs, when you're fighting mobs in Conquest areas and you gain experience from killing them, you'll accumulate CP, or Conquest Points. CP can be spent at the same vendors you get Signet from on various items and consumables. The Warp Ring is under common items that don't have a rank requirement. Once you have that, you can equip it, wait 10 seconds, and then warp, and I think it comes with a 10 minute cooldown between uses. Something short like that.
That's the easiest method of warping back to HP - unless you're a BLM, then you can get the Warp spell at level 18 and warp whenever you want. They also get Warp 2, which helps in sending party members back to their HP as well.
editmore: IMO, FF11 has some of the best storytelling among FF titles, including mainline ones. The way the story presents itself is through cutscenes that are very similar to FFXIV's presentation.
To start, you have nation missions- these are what was included pre-Rise of the Zilart, which was the game's first proper expac. Nation missions in the first few ranks are pretty typical adventuring stuff; you'll get some lore about the nation you start in, you'll become familiar with some key NPCs, and they're generally pretty simple. When you hit rank 2, you go visit the other nations and end up fighting your first major boss by the end. Once you hit rank 3, you're off to Jeuno, and that's where nation's missions temporarily converge- by rank 5, you've fought the Shadow Lord and done some things and made a name for yourself. From there, the nation missions split off again and then each nation has its own unique story that each build the game world in different ways.
Once you hit rank 5, you unlock Rise of the Zilart missions. Being the game's first expac, there are a lot of cutscenes as you might expect but there aren't a ton of missions- you get 12ish in total IIRC, and towards the end of RotZ you unlock an amazing endgame area that players call 'sky'.
The next expac, Chains of Promathia (CoP), actually lets you start at level 30. The mission format is quite different from that of the prior expansion, and CoP is very story and lore-dense; there's a lot of cutscenes, a lot of fights, a lot of lore bombs, and at the time of the 75 cap it was one of the game's hardest challenges to overcome and complete because, unlike FFXIV, story stuff was -actually- challenging. Incredibly, in some cases. CoP's missions go all the way to the 75 cap and towards the end, much like RotZ, you unlock an AMAZING endgame area players call 'sea.'
From there, CoP and RotZ actually have an epilogue of sorts that ties them together with a fight that caps it all off and you can get extra rewards in the way of endgame accessories.
The next expansion, Treasures of Aht Urghan, takes the player to an entirely new continent, and once again the format of how the expansion handles missions changes a little. But, there's lots of cutscenes, lore, worldbuilding and plenty of combat. This expac is almost exclusively 50-75 level content.
After that comes Wings of the Goddess, which is mostly level 75+ content. It's on the denser and heftier side, like Chains of Promathia is, and is quite long to complete. Excellent story.
The next content after that in chronological order is Abyssea- for most people, Abyssea was the cut-off point. By the time Abyssea was introduced, the level 75-cap had been in place for many years and pretty much everything was balanced around that; with the addition of Abyssea, the level cap was raised eventually to 99, which obviously came with new endgame armor and weapons for each job, but it also largely made everything prior obsolete. That was a tough pill for a lot of players to swallow and there was an exodus of players. It comes with its own story and the story is decent, but more bite-sized than previous content additions.
After that comes Seekers of Adoulin, which is the game's last proper paid expansion. Adoulin has a LOT of meat to it, and a lot to explore, but you won't be doing much of this until you're 99- unless you want to unlock Geomancer or Rune Fencer.
The last large story addition was Rhapsodies of Vana'diel- this was meant to be the game's swan song back in 2015-2016. The final hurrah, if you will; it adds a new story that you can either do alongside other storylines, or you can complete all of them first and then go through Rhapsodies. It ties all of the game's major expansions together and brings the world together in a desperate struggle against a final, final foe. It's also a very good story that's worth experiencing.
tl;dr FFXI has a LOT of story content, and the amount of stories it tells and how vast its world is easily rivals FFXIV. For solo players, that means that even if you don't plan on playing endgame or joining a linkshell and getting caught in that gameplay loop, there's tons of story content you can do and you can solo 99.9% of it.

I have "fond" memories of my days in Ragnarok Online.
And by fond I mean pulling my hair trying to workout as a "solo at first" player trying various jobs to not lose faith on it, until I landed on Lord Knight and them Rune Knight, but once I got the flow and manage to get a good guild to do stuff, it was a fun ride.
After that was jumping from private server to private server while catering to my solo playstyle as I can sneeze Meteor sized spells with zero cast time (because 150 DEX BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!) so I turned into a High Wizard/Warlock
Honestly might give it a shot sometime. This format is so good trin keep it up!
In the fight against the dragon and the Ahriman, 15 years ago you had to spend hours in town /shouting or sending random /tells to people to get help from a full party, including the mandatory Black Mage to put the Ahriman to sleep so you can all finish off the dragon.
This is the game that makes you learn how to make macros
Also the unlocking the jobs and the artifact gear will be an experience for you, hope you are mentally prepared for it.
The story I think is way better than 14, once you get into the rise of the zilart that is, from there on oh man I loved every bit of the story all the way through to the latest expansion which I have yet to finish, even abyssea had a good story, it's exp mechanics ruined the game though.
If SE decided to do a bundle subscription for both XIV and XI monthly for like, $20 a month I think they could manage to get more people to play XI
I've never quite grasped the aversion to engaging in group content within massively multiplayer roleplaying games. There are numerous outstanding solo RPGs available that offer an incomparably richer solo experience. It's disheartening (and, frankly, somewhat infuriating) that those of us who appreciate MMORPGs for their primary quality-social gameplay-often find ourselves limited to niche projects. The industry seems perpetually fixated on catering to a player base that prefers solo online play, merely showcasing their achievements in city centers by day's end.
Good Video! As someone who has never played 11 this is a good lil introduction! :D
Played this back in the day on ps2 and it was my first mmo experience. Absolutely loved it, but once WOW released I just didn’t feel the same. I can remember putting on my lfg in FFXI and sitting waiting to be invited to a group to be able to level. While waiting I was running quests and doing all kinds of things in WOW on my laptop. It just got to the point where I was sick of constantly waiting to do things and quit FFXI completely. Ended up reinstalling it a couple of years ago and with the trust system the experience is definitely a lot better. Was able to finally accomplish some things I never would have been able to before. It’s still a slow game tho lol.
I love XI still. I could never get into 14 and I tried really hard. And modern 11 is much more new player friendly than it used to be to be.
endgame raid content in FFXI used to be about preparation, positioning, aggro management and mitigating effects. Status curing potions might be required, you may also need to poison yourself if a mob uses sleep, as poison will wake you up every time it ticks.
These higher end fights were battles of attrition where you'd use everything you could to eke out an edge in the fight. Red Mages and Bards would buff/debuff, or apply DoTs, the tank would kite the boss to minimize auto-attack damage, and a thief might even be required if you're doing a NIN tank to use sneak attack/trick attack to give aggro to them.
It required a lot of coordination and planning.
Blue Mage is where its at. Its an actual proper job unlike in 14.
A lot of the jobs in FFXI has many good jobs.
Ah yes... The good old days of FFXI and getting lost in dungeons, caves and tunnels. Honestly I found it very enjoyable that the game didn't hold your hand.
The main thing that would get me to try this game is if the sub fee for this game would be included in the FF14 sub.
They would have to do a lot to update the game for the FF14 audience included the dreaded playonline, the true final fantasy final boss.
Can you please list out the music that you used in the video. 😢
As far as needing to solo the game, if there's one thing FFXI has it's friendly players. If you jumped on a discord for the game you'd find help easily. And since level sync a thing, they can be reduced to your level if you choose if you just don't want it all to feel too easy
I've always been interested in this game but installing the damn thing is such a pain in the ass. You're a braver man than I, trin
Horizonxi private server makes the install super easy
Yeah but HorizonXi also has NONE of the qol of the modern game.
I completed the MSQ of the base game yesterday on SAM/WAR, so i wanted to give you my thoughts as someone who got a bit overall farther.
Story wise, it does have some intrigue and interesting ideas, esp compared to how we are in FFXIV's story, so i can appreciate the smaller more "city" based issues (I played in Sandoria bc i love the music and aesthetics of the town), and the final fight was pretty cool and a bit different from how i expected it to go down.
Getting up to level 60 SAM made me FINALLY feel like a important part of my trust party lol. I basically did fuck all until level 30, which around then i got meditate which allowed me to actually play the game more often than once every 2 mins. I still dont really understand the skillchain system, and apparently the best trusts for that are locked until much later, so i kinda just spammed enpi for damage til things died. That being said, having things like third eye and seigan counters, managing hasso and berserk for big damage windows, warding circle for a defensive raid buff, and meikyo for extra damage options was decently fun, its just cumbersome with how little i understand macros and the menus.
I think the biggest thing i enjoyed the most was the feeling of mastering the game's world. every survival guide, every home point, and every unity accord got me another step into the unforgiving land, esp once i got the Warp Ring from conquest points. being able to teleport around the main cities after clawing my way to them made msq soooo much faster, something ffxiv never really gave me since its teleports are story locked most of the time. Making my own web of teleports and locations definitely makes leveling alt jobs a lot less painful too compared to your first.
Following the quickstart guide was also a godsend, easily guiding me to tons of massive upgrades and bonuses. Doing rhapsodies of vanadiel was like "hey you did like 1 annoying quest, heres a PERMANENT exp boost, skillgain boost, trust member, teleport reduction, oh yeah and a vendor thats sells some nice food and sneak/invis items so you can go to higher level areas for quests easier" and thats the FIRST of several bonuses. once i picked up Semih from the msq i basically had an ilvl 665 bard with me fucking destoring damn near every middle level mob, and THEN got a scholar in there for additional magic damage on top of vala/kupipi keeping monsters on them all the time. you'll already be nose deep into the wiki anyways, might as well follow that too.
My issues with 11 come down to a lot of the little things. Mods are extremely useful, so much so the game is basically unplayable for me without them. The minimap plugin is INSANELY useful, giving you a small map that constantly updates where you are and whats around you 24/7. I never got lost with it and a full map up on the 2nd screen, which makes getting around a lot nicer and faster. seeing your exp bar, cutting out the mount music, scaling the ui, a lot of stuff just mod-only. Lots of quests feel very bloated and time-gated, like the SAM unlock quest was actually kinda fun until the game said "ok now i need to make the sword, see you in 3 hours!" and that motherfucker MEANT 3 hours my time. Its stuff like this that i dont have the time and energy for, which sucks.
music wise, god i miss 14's constant music. so many cool areas just fucking. silent. when the music IS there its great, i love sandy, i love ronfaure, i love kazham, i loved the final castle music and final boss fight, but more often than not its just a bigass area with no music up at all. sometimes on a sneaking mission i can at least play mgs music to get me in the mood, but i just wish there was more variety while i trudge around the different areas.
Overall, if you really put the time and energy into the game, as well as find a lot of communities on discord (I know Mr Happy has a whole section on his discord for FFXI stuff), i think theres a lot of cool stuff to do. people will still help if you go around asking for linkshells, its just gonna be on you to help. if anything, FFXI right now is extremely grindy, so youve got tons upon tons to do, esp if you simply unsub after beating TOP and doing the 6.55 msq. It really just depends on how much you want to dig deep into marcos and the games systems, and how much time you have spare, and for me, I think i'd rather play all the bangers i missed out on since I became a FFXIV simp in mid 2020. Thats my take in 11.
FFXI was one of the first MMOs i ever played when i was a teen. Game is 1000000x more solo friendly now than it was back in the mid 2000s thanks to the trust system and overall MUCH higher exp output from mobs, pages, and sparks. I hopped on during a returner campaign and got my dark knight from lvl 5 to 80 or 90 solo in a night or two. That used to take weeks.
Had a ton of fun and met a lot of friends just levelling lower level jobs back in the day. Killed so many goddamn crabs, lizards, and crawlers...
Had a couple bad parties too. I was trying to level red mage at lvl 30ish in Yuhtunga Jungle, got into a mandragora lvling party. The lead told me "RDM heal/haste/refresh only!" I didnt, cause i wasnt high enough level for haste or refresh (too poor to buy the spells even if i could ise them too) and we had a lvl 75 friend outside the party healing us, and i got booted from the party for putting enfeebles and casting fire... There was literally nothing for me to heal. This was back when word got around on the servers too, had issues getting into parties after that until i started levelling another job. Was some bs.
Many whelps handle it
Anyone whos interested in ffxi, you have 2 options, retail or horizonxi, retail is good and respects your a time a bit more, horizonxi is plug and play but its ffxi classic, no trusts, it forces you to group up with real people
There's other private servers that are alive and well, I play on Supernovah.
There are active discord and reddit communities for way more obscure and old games out there so there for sure is some for this. There is a reason why its been kept alive for this long
I tried the XI free trial for pretty much the same reason you did (Endwalker content drought) and I got really into it. I'm going to pick up a copy when it goes on sale. In the meanwhile I have a friend who's been nagging me to try City Of Heroes for a long while, so I finally made myself a character and I'm going to give that a try.
Played back in 2003 my first MMO I love it so much I kept going back and now playing again. The game now is streamlined with mounts, trusts, spark equipment, addons, teleporting using crystal etc. It is still super fun the only thing is getting help now a days can be hard sometimes because a lot of players are maxed out and are busy doing end game stuff
Back in the day, it was common practice to talk to all NPCs in an RPG to figure out anything. You were expected to talk to everyone. It's only natural that this carried over into an MMORPG. Also ... end game raids ... they made an endgame boss so hard that nobody could beat it lol. *Laughs in Absolute Virtue*
cool to hear your thoughts on the game, would definitely like to see more :)
Excellent Video bro! lol Funny AF!
Love XI, love XIV, great video. Had me cracking up. (EDIT: HorizonXI is a great server for 75 era locked FFXI, since retail is still full price)
FF11, the expansions start at level 30, for all of them. But Rhapsodies of Vanadiel expansion should help guide you through the entire game's story.
That is one thing I miss about 11 was the skillchains and magic bursts. I played on PS2 and was my first MMO.
I don't know the differences between the Final Fantasies and at this point I am too afraid to ask.
Just pick a number and start there. All of them can be a valid entry point.
@@zedorian6547 All Final Fantasy games, except 10-2, 13-2 and 13:Return, are separated games with their own story.
11 is so good. I got bored of 14 half way through Heavensward and switched over. Never going back.
1:02 You know there's a revival server of CoH, right?
For FF14 players getting into FF11, Retail is much more friendlier, and old school FF11, like those private servers, will have a hard time getting through content. FF11 does get monthly updates on the campaigns. There is so much to do in FF11 that FF14 will never have. I still play both MMOs, I retired from raiding in FF14 since their is no investment in gearing and glamour is basically the true endgame. However, in FF11, old gear gets lved up over time and follows a ladder step system.
I say this with experience. FF14 is a great game, been playing it since 1.0 and done everything in the game, except RP which is not my cup of tea, but I do not feel the MMO in these newer MMOs sadly people get bored fast in FF14, I still play it to make gil and craft, and do daily or weekly things. Old MMOs have something that made things more fun and it all needs is better UI system as what you mention in the video. I hope you continue to play and learn new things to see what many of us MMO gamers ses.
2:05 Me every time I install mods in a Bethesda game only to spend the next however long figuring out what does and doesn't work and proper load orders.
city of heros isnt really dead as theres a fan server endorsed by ncsoft that's available to play
If you pick it up again I highly reccomend getting windower and ussing addons to make the game easier, being able to use stuff like skillchain addons to vissually see how skill chains work can make the game a lot more fun
Dude I'm just impressed Yoshi hasn't smoked himself to death yet, member that pic of him passed out with the RedBull on the carpet in the office wayyyyy back before 2.0 I thought that was the end of him then lol.
Love you trin!
Dunno if you'll even see this but the private server CatseyeXI has all the lv 75 content with the QoL features retail has, as well as very helpful community. I'd give it a shot if you're still interested and don't want to worry about a sub fee.
You've sparked my interest on the game. Guess I'll have to at least write down that I want to try it.
It took me 3hrs of questing to get the map of the Crawler's Nest.
"Getting the mouse and keyboard controls to work are awful." Because it didn't use the mouse except to point and click on menus. XI was made as a pure keyboard or controller game, and it ruined me for other MMOs that used proper mouse and keyboard because it let you move using the number pad on a 102 button keyboard and control the camera using your thumb. This trained my brain such that now I must keybind EVERY game to use this, instead of the standard WASD and mouse 99% of other keyboard users all have. (This works in XIV surprisingly well, though, with the only exceptions being teleport points that require precision camera movement to function. Took me a while to clear Eden 7 Savage....)
Edit: Another thing to mention is that this game is meant to be played at 4:3 resolution, not 16:9 resolution, which is why everyone looks so fat. If Windower is still around, I'd recommend swapping over to CRT aspect ratio and see if looks better.
I never played FFXI because I couldn't afford the sub back then, but most of the things talked about in this video is what I miss about old-school MMOs where it felt like the community is closer as a whole, not just a bunch of dudes hanging out in a FC.
Trying it out myself. I like the old school charm. Now, the thought of actually having to group up and do stuff together to actually play does appeal to me, but at the same time I do need to be able to play a bit by myself so being able to solo is a plus for me since I can go at me own pace, but again, I also do want the sense of community so I'm a little torn on that. I know about the private servers that emulate the old days, and while that does appeal to me, it does sadden me to say I don't think I can truly commit to that, since the downside is I would basically have to be forced to play all the time to keep up and keep friends, which I can't do sadly... so I would end up essentially losing friends, like I have in other mmos where I stopped playing for an extended period of time
I guess I've also been afraid to make friends, because then I'd be afraid of losing them... so I tend to keep to myself a lot
You’re right laying on the regular retail servers? I use to play on ps2 and Im thinking of coming back
I tried this game last year and after hours of trying to get the game started, I finally got it to work. Then it kept crashing every few minutes and I uninstalled
Also if you every needed someone. I have been playing since 2006. Recently came back and brought a friend with me. FFXI is still a great game.
Ahh yes I remember installing and then updating the game. Only took 2 straight days for it to finish 😝
Been playing ffxi since 2003 off and on and i can tell you that getting endgame content if you are not in a linkshell who will 100% carry/help you is not possible imo. As long as i have played i have never experienced endgame in the 75 era or the current game because i do not have the patience or time to get the gear needed in order to participate. And i am happy at where im at currently. I have all jobs to 99, my main is a monk who i job mastered solo and am currently soloing the master levels (monk 19/war 52). FFXI was my first mmo and I have always loved the game but i do miss the 75 era a lot. The game is challenging and I think that is what i love about it, i soloed all the storylines for each expansion up through SoA. I have not started the voracious resurgence storyline, not even sure if it is soloable but i will eventually probably after i level up some more. I am on the Asura server and my main is Malafides if your on the same server you can reach out if you need help on anything :).
Yes, we've been asking YoshiP and MatsuiP for YEARS to conjoine the XI and XIV sub fees so that if you play XIV you can play XI
The best parts of XI are the story, the music, and the community, one of the nicest you'll ever encounter
U eventually got the warp ring later on , right?
Why is your aspect ratio off? You can change the game to 16:9. The controller thing was recently changed you can now configure the controller from inside FFXI.
Old FFXI player here. Hard to say what is possible in the max level range today. I can tell you once upon a time there was a player by the name of Avesta that used to solo content that was made for raids. They couldn't solo everything, but definitely did some things that no one else could. If you wanna see what level 75 solo content looks like back in the day, you should search him up.
If FFXI ever has a single-player game, I truly hope Avesta is a Red Mage running around in that world, defying the bounds of what's reasonably possible.
This is the kind of game you have to be somewhat smart to play and the smarter the better
FFXI was back when MMOs were actually adventurous and not spreadsheets. Besides EVE. EVE is still from that time. The thing I like about FFXI is that not every skill you got was part of combat, or always used. You didn't always cast poison, sneak and invisible had utility for getting around undetected (and boy is that way more important in XI than XIV), and Protect was a viable (and nice!) thing to cast on random people. You throw a shield on some random passerby in XIV and it lasts 30 seconds and it only would really help with overworld mobs which didn't matter anyway. Whereas in XI overworld mobs are 90% of the game, and Protect lasted 10 or more minutes. There was a lot of stuff like this.
Raids evolved in XI. At first it was Overworld stuff where anyone could tag the mob and it was a fight to see who had the lowest ping. Then it was "Overworld" which means an area(s) with special access but it wasn't an instance, per se. Then there was Dynamis (hey, you know that word!) which is far more traditional raid. And then we went on to stuff like Salvage. Fuck Salvage btw. Fun times. 8/10 never do it again.
Fucking treasures of Aht Urhgan was a different and interesting experience. I really like the concept of the enemy raiding your town and it was a whole town effort to fight off. Wings of the Goddess kind of expanded on this. It was cool. Kind of like FATEs but more interesting.
I quit mid Wings, for context. Everything after that I am unaware of. I know OF Trusts but never got to experience them. And all the changes to make the game more user friendly. And the new raid styles. Master Trials are a totally new concept to me, but I see they keep dragging the Archangels back from the dead for the 100th time to fight the WoL. lmao
God, the game was bad, but lovely, at the same time. It definitely carved me out of stone.
The grand irony of this video is that even the things which seem like absurd tribulations to a new player are already soft mode for this game. Instant warp scrolls were not always easy to come by (had to spend conquest points which were not always plentiful) and players were expected to WALK HOME or later have a black mage send them home via the spell warp II, or even sub black mage just for this purpose. And maps? Yeah you didn't used to buy them for trivial amounts of gold. Some of them yes, but many of them were locked behind quests. IIRC some even forced you to venture into the zones for which you had no map to complete.
As far as getting through the game, players are generally very willing to help players get through the game. It is perhaps the last remnant of the original design psychology that persists. If you help a player get through the content they need, they will later be able to help you with your own needs. And yes, much of the content becomes click to win with a veteran helping.
As far as the subscription fee, they would never ever get rid of it. It is THE biggest thing that is holding that game together. The subscription fee is a barrier to entry against jackasses signing up and acting foolish, and the integrity garnered via a lack of microtransactions is what sets this game apart from modern trash, ffxiv included.
If you are looking for a fun game to play this is not the game for you. This game in my opinion was very helpful for those who had many problems in real life. It was a way to escape from reality back in my day around 2003 to 2005.
Do people legit not have the game wiki open all the time playing MMOs?
It's crazy to think DQX is easier to play than any other Squenix MMO.
Lmao isn’t that the truth!!!!
You can buy a warp ring early on now with unlimited warp charges.
One of the best experiencesof my life gaming also. I can genuinely say i f#$_3$ shit up in n this game. Countless hours plent of real friends no hasle always found a way to handle something if somone wasnt. There was communities clans who always organized the events to get everything done....it truely was a group.effort to kill enemies. The grind was real and was a game of skill.... truly
is that a type0 background
XI is the Dark Souls of Final Fantasy, not for the faint of heart.......it can also make people tap out from frustration.
Isnt it on steam. Its not stream line there?
It's on steam but it costs money to buy.
