The magic of early MMOs is something that will probably never be seen again. It wasn't always easy, it wasn't always fun, but there was a mystery and a magic to it. People banded together because they had to to survive. You fought together, succeeded and failed together, you created stories and memories. And while there were certainly more low moments of waiting around for parties and banging your head against a wall for that crazy-rare drop, you felt like you were part of a world, not just given a list of objectives. Your triumphs made you feel heroic, powerful.
Torcularis agreed entirely. Sometimes I think it’s my age that prevents games from feeling this way again, but really, I just think it’s the games. They are made too well now with people’s time and patience in consideration. There was a lot of accidental magic in the early years of MMOs.
At first I thought you meant literally the magic that characters use. Which I think also applies, because MMOs nowadays only have spells that you use all the time and nothing situational, basically. No elemental weaknesses to think of, etc. But anyway, yeah, you're right. It's depressing, too. I played a lot of early MMOs as a kid, never being able to play any of the really good/subscription ones because I had parents that were the "THAT THUR INTERNET WILL STEAL MY CREDIT CARD" variety. More or less grew up playing miscellaneous MMOs, mostly Ultima clones, and Diablo 2. The fun of grouping up with random people who just happen to be in the same area as you, because you all need a group to succeed, or asking around in a town, just doesn't happen anymore.
@@KrsJin its age + datamining. As a kid every 'good' game felt like a mistery to me. nowadays every patch for every mmo gets datamined to the last line of text in it, so nothing will be 'unknown' or misterious anymoire, because we know the content + rewards before they are even implemented.
If he wants a boss rage, Provenance Watcher might be a better bet, it's the one story boss I'm aware of that still pretty much requires a solid group - the bosses for Adoulin and Rhapsodies also tend to require groups, but apparently some people managed to solo those, and they don't require as much prior work, so the rage would be mitigated there.
Base XV was an abomination. Low latency, stuttering, abysmal crafting system, ridiculous quest fetching, copypasted tiles on the maps... And so on. I asked for a refund and forgot about it until Realm Reborn was released.
It was less of backlash and more of everyone was like....okay this game's just not very good, I'm gonna go play something else. I didn't get a legit backlash like the Diablo Immortal announcement did where people are basically boycotting the game. People were just horribly disappointed with it and Square even knew the OG 14 was garbage so they honestly did the smart thing and 14's great now. Sadly, though it wasn't originally planned for 14 to go that route, it's given other developers the idea that "hey, we can release a shit game and just release a not shit version later on".
Explosive Bolts If you want 11 in it's archaic glory, go back to it. It's still there. XIV is a great game in it's own right. You don't like no need to play it or act like XI is the be all end all of MMOs. Which it isn't.
Final Fantasy XI was fucking hardcore. Soloing was impossible so leveling consisted of you and your party (that took 12 hours to form) stacking in a free corner of a zone packed with several other parties and pulling mobs one at a time. Mobs didn't have a displayed level, so two identical crabs could either be fairly easy or wreck your shit and GOD HELP YOU if you accidentally pull two crabs at once. Mobs in FFXI chase you forever so you and your party had to run for your lives to the nearest exit to de-aggro, at which point they would aggro onto whatever other poor souls happened to be in the area at the time and wipe their group. Some zones were fairly large and open so it wasn't too bad, but other zones were tiny. One leveling area was literally the single narrow entrance hallway of a fortress with holes in the floor that dropped into another area where all the mobs are twice your level. And as if grinding crabs and worms for 8 hours to level wasn't fun enough, when another party trained a pack of skeletons into your group and you died, YOU LOST ALL THAT XP AND LEVELED DOWN. Now if you've only played modern MMOs you may be thinking, "why don't you just do some quests?" FFXI quests were few and far between and were typically something along the lines of an NPC telling you, "go get me an item." He doesn't tell you what the item is. He doesn't tell you where the item is located. GOOD LUCK! I had a lot of fun with FFXI but goddamn I have never played a game before or since that hated the player so much for daring to play it. XD
Not necessarily I went after pet jobs and if my pet pulled the wrong mob i'd deactivate my pet then the mob would dc. so mines, sewer, and worm lvl grind parties soloing after lvl. 90-99 wasn't too difficult with a pet job and two NPC's. The FF11 I remember was a hard game. Regular leveling up past level 15 with any efficiency requires a group of a specific mix (with the exception of beastmaster) Sometimes it takes hours just to form a party group to level up because the server had a mix of Japanese and English speaker, watering down the player pool. After quitting FF11 because it just took too much time/effort to play, WOW felt like easy mode.

Every few months I get nostalgic for these types of MMORPGs as I used to play Runescape, EQOA, FFXI, Vanilla WoW. I'm burnt out from these newer MMORPGs like current WoW & FFXIV. They are great for what they are but not what I want to play any longer. I'm waiting for Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. It's from an indie developer lead by Brad McQuaid, the "Father of EverQuest". I post this to get the word out especially on videos like these where people might be reminiscing and nostalgic and looking for that feeling again! I learned about the game around mid 2016, but its been in development since at least 2015. Probably won't get released until late 2021 or some time in 2022 but now you know!
The fuck? Max is hosting XIV Fanfest?! This is a weird crossing of my fandom streams and I THINK I LIKE IT! Been waiting SO LONG for the (hopefully most likely maybe for sure will happen possibly) 5.0 expansion reveal announcement! Unfortunately I never touched FFXI, only XIV for me. Shine on, Doods!
Oh gosh dood, so many memories man. I also used to play this...for years!!! One of the best (if not unnecessary complicated) MMO's of all time. Still remember my noob days in Valkrum Dunes, defeating the Dark Lord, getting to Sky, my first Kirin's Osode, and my final days in Sea...(holds tears) T_T
Had some serious nostalgia watching you play. Even moreso because my main was a PLD as well. I stopped playing a lot later than you right before Abyssea and changed the way the game was played. One of these days maybe, I'll go back too.
Absolutely amazing video. I had my nostalgia glasses on the entire way. Paladin dancer eh? That takes me back. I assume one of those swords was a joy toy aka Joyeuse. You were super well geared back in the 75 era. My man is rocking that Ares armor from salvage.
My ma bought a PS2 copy of this today at a yard sale and expected me to play it online. I never facepalmed so hard in my life, think I broke something.
Holt mother of Promathia, this game took my life for a lot of years. Used to play a ton of SAM and BRD, untill dancer came out, the switched to it for the outstanding visual effects. Damn those colibri's teams made many of my nights sleepless. Also I remember casting my first Tachi: Kasha, it gave me chills.
The funny thing is that current gear you'll one-hit despot. You can level a character 1-99 in about 12 hours and after that you want to have a group carry you through ambuscade to get some good starting gear and then focus on omen and new dynamis
Loved this game. Been playing it recently due to the free login until the 20th. I used to run a sky and limbus LS on Lakshmi back in 2008. Oh the memories :)
After they announced an XI fan event next month for the first time in years everyone i know that plays XIV has jumped back into XI. The game refuses to die.
I don't recognize anything you were doing or fighting there but my god did the sounds take me back. I stopped back in 2004 I think? Because FFXI was also taking over my life. I think that's just how it worked. xD And I agree with the difficulty rating. The fact that a player couldn't progress past level 20 without a party was so rough. You'd spend sometimes hours trying to get a group together (a balanced group btw because god forbid you tried to play without a healer or tank) only to have members bail because they had life to deal with and couldn't continue waiting. And then there was no guarantee that your party members knew what they were doing. I do not miss that part of the game.
Oh man, totally dreamed again about getting back into FFXI after watching this video yesterday. I quit shortly after Abyssea started since I couldn't keep up with the new grind for gear. Had a pretty decked out Rdm and Blm (Morrigan set, AF2 +1 Hat, Novio, WLegs) with a few other jobs at 75/85 (Drg, Nin, Cor, Thf, Brd, Sch). Your pally is pretty decked out for the pre-Abyssea era! I'm honestly surprised your character is still active unless you've kept paying the fee to keep it all these years.
It's already sneakily beautiful that he takes a FFXIV-related invitation and uses it as an opportunity to show off XI. I hope he keeps it up - SE barely ever talks about FFXI, but it's a solidly-designed game that's clearly standing the test of time and profitability after 16 years (and it was originally conceived to only last about 5). I hope attention bumps like this encourage more people to try out the game, and especially encourage SE to upgrade the game's infrastructure so it won't need PlayOnline or PS2 dev kits to keep going.
God I played that game way too long...had to have atleast 8 years actual playtime on it lol and glad to see so much ff11 talk going on lately...can't wait to hear what the news we get come December is going to be
Man, not playing this game was a regret of mine back in the day. Got it as a gift for the 360 because my parents knew I liked FFX, but then never got round to making an Xbox Live account since I didn't really trust online stuff at the time (on consoles anyway), but I really did want to try it out and see what it was like. I still have the box, and still have never had Xbox Live actually, more a PC and PS guy, so it is a shame.
Eureka in XIV is a callback. And it kinda sucks(IMO). I know of several people that pretty much said “If SE wants me to go play XI, then I’ll just go play XI!”. Some of them have yet to come back. Me personally I HATE eureka. No thanks, SE, you can keep those relic weapons...
Aah that makes sense. I took a break from ffxiv almost a year ago so I don't even know what's going on anymore. I'm guessing the same grind cycles. I came back to ffxi a few weeks ago and it's been great.
I could never get into FF11... and for the longest time I felt like part of the majority in that, but then suddenly out of no where BOOM everyone's loving the game a million years latter.
Nowadays you can get NPC party members to help fill out a party, and you get levels a lot fater, not only through more EXP per kill, but also thanks to systems like Records of Eminence, Fields/Grounds of Valor, and bonuses for progressing through Rhapsodies of Vana'diel.
FFXI is the single greatest game of all time. It is an absolute masterpiece and I would easily pay $200 for it in the modern world and $20 a month for a server locked at 75, and not Nasomi. The real version with all the equipment and zones unlocked. I will do so many bird parties.
When i quit ffxi after years of playing, I made the mistake of selling my account (it was hard times) ...I so wish I could go back to my original account. I had a 75rdm 75rng 75whm 75bst 75brd. And so much good gear :(
I just saw this on sale and was thinking that I should maybe take a trip down memory lane as well. I had this game on the PS2. I started this game in Sandoria also. That soundtrack especially brings back memories of running around the city. This game was such a time suck! Got up to lvl 45 as a monk before I started working and completely lost the motivation to play. These games were horribly crackish and to this day I still can't understand why I sunk so much time into it given everything this game required you to do!!
They streamlined a lot of things like travel in the past few years, and leveling got a lot faster too, not just through EXP gained per mob, but also thanks to mechanics like the Records of Eminence system, Fields/Grounds of Valor regimes in several areas, and Rhapsodies of Vana'diel progress bonuses. For me the main motivation was always the story (it is a story-rich Final Fantasy game after all, something that's oddly underplayed in the way the game is discussed), and there's always plenty of that to experience at multiple level ranges, so that always kept me busy even when you needed a group to level and it could take a while to find one.
@@IkariLoona Outside of some of the item quests, I never really got to the story lol. I had absolutely no clue where to go half of the time and relied on my link shell for that information. Spent most of the time waiting for parties and trying to farm.
@@thec0r379 I played (and still play) for the story, so when I couldn't get parties to level up, I just worked on the quests that were available for my level while keeping my party flag up, checking the wiki at the same time to figure out which ones were available. If nothing else, XI has a knack to encourage research and optimizing the use of one's time and trips.

I can rest in peace man...this completed me holy shit, paladin lvl 75 that purple armour was the shit. Cait sith server.
God I played that game way too long...had to have atleast 8 years actual playtime on it lol and glad to see so much ff11 talk going on lately...can't wait to hear what the news we get come December is going to be
This was freaking hilarious... I'd love to see you play this game more!
I spent many years on Pandemonium server. I love that game.
Pandy for life.
Pandemonium represent.
Omg i an voiceless of pandy lol
What's up with all the people starting to stream this again?
Fanfest and Eureka in FFXIV is supposed to be a callback to XI so I guess people went back.
@@GremDisaster i hate eureka as well. Shits brutal on your hands
It's also free to login to FFXI until Nov. 20th if you ever had an account. They do it each year for about a week or two.
Oh man, i haven't played this until last or this year, but just the look of it is giving me nostalgic vibes
Ahhhh my nostalgia!!! I dont play as much as I used to, but I will never delete my character!! I LOVE this game!!
My heart sank when I saw Despot. Before Max realized what aggroed him I started internally screaming
He must have played in 2007 because he had DNC subbed to 37. That's cool his PLD was decked out for the day with AF2 and an excalibur.
Omg!!! Holy shit!!! I played this game for 4 years straight!!!! Damn!!! I need to go back!!!!
This game cause a rift in my friendships, social life, and long nights. So glad to be free from the addiction.
I am back into the game myself, great game. just a lot of fun to be more... relaxed now.
Max is on another level!!
I have not played this in over 10 years so much has changed
First I saw Ninja streaming XI now I see Max doing it. Man I almost feel bad for quieting the game because of a bad LS I had back in the day/
Me too I miss the entire life cycle of PS2. This game push me the levels that I have never thought I could reach. this game gave me a PhD in RPG
My god..... THE NOSTALGIA!!!!!!
Is Max about to make me pick up FF11 again?
I could never get into FF11... and for the longest time I felt like part of the majority in that, but then suddenly out of no where BOOM everyone's loving the game a million years latter.
Oh God don't do this to me. Don't pull me back in. Can't.... stay...... away
Seraph/Bismarck for life!
Omg Max! You too? I love it!
"You need people"
Probably why I didn't advance further than level 20 back in the day cus i had no friends that played it.
Nowadays you can get NPC party members to help fill out a party, and you get levels a lot fater, not only through more EXP per kill, but also thanks to systems like Records of Eminence, Fields/Grounds of Valor, and bonuses for progressing through Rhapsodies of Vana'diel.
@@IkariLoona that's good to know. Might have to see if I can find a code for it somewhere, my copy is since long gone sadly.
FFXI is the single greatest game of all time. It is an absolute masterpiece and I would easily pay $200 for it in the modern world and $20 a month for a server locked at 75, and not Nasomi. The real version with all the equipment and zones unlocked. I will do so many bird parties.
Max. Horizon XI. It’s time. Time to come home.
HorizonXI, yall. Mad population and biggest dev team for an XI private server. In CoP rn soon enough moving into ToAU.
OH man this was me but with EverQuest. Every now and then I go back. But it not longer feels the same as it did back in 1999.
When i quit ffxi after years of playing, I made the mistake of selling my account (it was hard times) ...I so wish I could go back to my original account. I had a 75rdm 75rng 75whm 75bst 75brd. And so much good gear :(
This was true adventure harsh and rewarding
The memories are real with this one!
Geez I had an almost capped Monk. Tarutaru.
Max i still play FFXI on private servers i love it
CAN MAX JUST HIT ONE MILLION SUBS?!
Ahh the memories. I used to be on Bismarck- Takeno aka the legendary samurai ;)
god i need to get people to just play this all the way
Nice to see you make a video that's not fighting game related
I got nostalgia from this and I never experienced this game, it looks like an absolute gem though.
This was the peak of MMOs.
heck ya max i cant wait to see if you will do any content of ff14 man i just got back into the game and i also use to play ff11 played me a rdm/ninja
Max learning JP because of XI reminds me a lot of Jiyuna
The version you said you imported had a level cap of 50
Thanks for this
Ah, Sky, so many memories.
Man this brings back fond memories. This game consumed my life as well, so I had to let it go, but it was too fun. Midgarsormr server here!
ahhhh the nostalgia, yep its hit me
The greatest mmo I've ever played, just based on the community. Lastok4lyfe!
FEH! Assdoria was worse lol.
Oh my god I heard the game music, I started crying
We need to go back and take revenge on Despot !!
That brought back soo many memories... Vaashe - Bahamut server
