I always considered Aerith the most powerful character, in terms of raw power, as Cloud has good techniques, Barret is good as long ranged character, and Tifa is the fastest among them.
But Aerith is who has most of the potential, in terms of be capable devastate easily the enemies with powerful attacks, especially with the materias, making her a truly powerhouse.
Actually Barrett can hit harder than Cloud sometimes depending on what weapons you equip him with but he ends up being like Cloud and has to get in their face to hit them.
But yeah, Aerith is powerful but weak. Essentially she's a glass cannon

That'd be really cool to see Aerith and Tifa as Vergil and Dante in the intro of M19, Tifa as Dante walking up to Aerith sitting in her chair as Vergil.

Aerith: If you want it, then you'll have to take it from me.......but you already knew that didn't you?
I knew I was bad at the game, so it's satisfying seeing someone do so well just playing Aerith solo. If I could get that good, I'd probably be fine. XD

You just have to find your own patterns. Just keep playing on normal and focus on one character and practice using shortcuts.
I designate one shape for all characters for similar attacks. So any “focused” strikes I’ll designate all characters with the square button, and then X for their most powerful attacks, counterstance as circle since it’s similar to dodge, and so on so on. I’ve played through the game literally 11 times and I still haven’t mastered it, but the combat is so much fun I keep doing boss battles over and over again!!

Game is balanced in characters, except Bareth is slow but still able to defeat Sephiroth solo in hard and even solo Weiss. This is a very well done game.
I don't have the game yet but can we play as her in battle instead of cloud?
Not exactly, the storyline forces which characters are available, and typically you can choose which of the featured characters you want to control while the other teammates are played by the compute (you can switch at any point)
