Watch Part 2 here: • “Amber Heard Is A GOLD...
Actor and former boxer Mickey Rourke joins Piers Morgan Uncensored for a fascinating interview in which he becomes emotional discussing his thoughts on the war in Ukraine and Vladimir Putin.
Rourke begins by discussing how the pandemic helped him regain focus on helping himself by working out, reading and "soul searching". After Piers asks what he's learned most about himself, he begins to explain the everlasting effects of the abuse he faced when he was a teenager, telling us "you live in shame and become a broken soul... or you get hard".
The pair then discuss Tom Cruise, with Rourke branding the Mission Impossible star "irrelevant", saying he has more respect for actors like Al Pacino and Robert de Niro.
Piers then asks about the war in Ukraine and Vladimir Putin, leading to Rourke recounting a time he met the Russian leader in 2014 at a children's hospital. The actor becomes tearful as he tells Piers he doesn't understand how or why Putin is causing such destruction in Ukraine and tells a very moving story.

What's fascinating to me is that Rourke once upon a time did work alongside De Niro and more than held his own as an actor. Rourke, unlike Cruise, actually had the talent (not just the looks) to become a legend like De Niro and Pacino and squandered it.
Cruise, while capable of solid performances with the right material, never quite seemed to have the talent to become such a legendary actor, even though he was capable of reaching super stardom by playing to his strengths well.
When we compare the current careers of Cruise and Rourke, it's obvious that Rourke's last good effort was "The Wrestler" 14 years ago and "Sin City" 17 years ago (and that came after a long string of absolute duds), whereas Cruise in the same timespan had almost nothing but universally acclaimed movies or megahits with at least 2 more coming up. Not to mention life choices and how healthy each of them seems, considering their age.
Like it or not, that's the truth. And Rourke has nobody but himself to blame for how things turned out.
So, ironically, this whole interview in which Rourke, among other things, calls Cruise irrelevant, comes off as nothing but a desperate attempt from Rourke himself to somehow be relevant.

I met Mickey in a cafe in Beverly Hills. I'm a nobody but I wanted to meet him and as I approached, he stood up from his chair looked me in the eye and shook my hand. Had a brief exchange with him, told him I loved his work and he could not have been more gracious or gentlemanly. I made a point not to hang around because he was already generous with his time. Pure class. Great memory. Great guy.

12:00 for context: Mickey had a brother who died after a long illness (cancer I believe) He told the story on “inside the actor’s studio” …he was at his brother’s side every day as he was dying. One day the hospice nurse who was attending to his brother told Mickey, “he’s only alive now because of you, he needs your permission to go, he needs you to tell him it’s ok…”. Mickey did, and his brother passed away hours later.
More context: Some of Mickey’s deepest and strongest relationships on this planet have been with his dogs…
Knowing this, when he started talking about the old Ukrainian man and his kitten, I knew he was going to lose it.
He’s a good guy who has been in pain for a long time. I wish him nothing but happiness.

This interview reminded me how genuine a person he is and when you have so much past pain within, you cannot help but cry when you empathize with the pain of others. That is Mickey. He does not need to apologise to anyone for being so honest. Mickey is the road well traveled, look at how emotional he is. That is strength, that is courage. It makes him stronger, it makes him inspirational. Mickey the pain in your life and the ability to reflect on things you have done in your life, God has your back and your front Mickey. Johnny dep, Keanu Reeves, Brad Pitt, Leonard D all have moves with those same 'dead eyes' so they don't break character TO displaying actual HUMAN emotion, and many of these actors hated that. Cruise has more range than generally perceived, as seen in Magnolia, Vanilla Sky, Collateral.
But success always remained a more important part of his career than the artistic part.
De Niro did it the other way around - did the artistic stuff for the first 40-50 years of his life. And when he got older and left his prime, he began having big commercial success by starring in idiotic comedy flicks. Same with Gary Oldman.
Maybe Cruise should have done it the other way around when he reached 40, but instead he kept going with the Mission Impossibles and Jack Reachers.

I completely agree with you that Cruise's range is often overlooked. You can add Tropic Thunder, Edge of Tomorrow, Rain Man, American Made and Born on the fourth of July to that list, as well.
I have no problems with Cruise doing it this way round. Its often sad seeing De Niro undermine his near Immortal legacy, with crap like Dirty Granpa, The war with Grandpa, The adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Little Fockers etc.
I'd like to see Tom Cruise take on mature and adult oriented dramas and thrillers now. As he enters his 7th decade, it would be great to see him take on films that push his acting limits, as opposed to his physical limits. He can still do blockbuster movies here and there. However he's in a unique position, where he's still a big draw and dependable. So a director like Scorsese, Scott, PTA, Villeneuve, Inarritu could attach him to a well constructed drama/thriller and get him that much deserved Oscar.

Not sure how old you are, but you've said a few things that are not accurate. Both Mickey and Tom come from 2 different places. This interview was not just about Tom Cruise but Piers brought it up that way to get him to say something silly. Mickey is also right in many ways about Tom Cruise, even though I enjoyed most of Toms movies throughout the years up until late 2000s. Then it was studio flicks and role reprisals for money and also probably bc there were no good scripts, which talent seems to be dying as less people get involved for creativity being stifled over money, and studios doing remakes or only making films for money (which they've always done, but creative people still came up with the projects). Also there's been a shift to streaming services which has played a role as well.
As much as Mickey seems strange these days, he was an incredible actor truky dedicated to his craft and NEVER gave a fuck about money -- this is what separated him from most of Hollywood, and most of the kids in these comments that equate material wealth to things that actually matter. Money doesnt make you more of a man.... and you can't buy good character. Just look at the degeneracy with rappers and others who make money these days and have zero to offer the world. Mickey has always been about the art of acting rather than taking roles bc of studios. And again that's not to say Tom Cruise isn't dedicated bc he's gotten some of the best scripts and dedicated himself immensely.
To correct you, saying DeNiro cared about the art for 50 years is incorrect. He's acted for 50+ years total, and after about 27/28 years was when he started doing comedies. Tom Cruise did the same, he made it after taking on serious roles like Deniro, except he did it about 10 years after.

Mickey Rourke seems like a troubled man, he looks like he can barely contain his emotions most of the time. But the pained-soul thing doesn't automatically mean better artist

One of the great tragedies of my lifetime as a movie fan has been the disintegration of Mickey Rourke. The guy you see in Angel Heart, Rummblefish, even Two and a Half Weeks was on par with a young Brando. Trouble is Mickey's mind is his worst enemy. Had he just focused on his craft, he'd be one of the greats.

Well….there will be always the divide between the artsy films and good commercial blockbusters. I think a good balance should co exist but there’s so much gap between the commercial rewards of the two that the former is getting totally buried. Just imagine, movies like Gone With the Wind and The Godfather were once the highest grossing films and now you cannot imagine just a dialogue and character driven film be a worldwide success let alone breaking records.
P.S: Cruise has done some great character roles as well from A Few Good Men ,Collateral to Tropic Thunder. But he has alas chosen the path of commercial viability and mass appeal.

Except he didn't leave home at 14. He graduated Beach High. I am his step sister, my Father raised him because his own father was a drunk and his Mother left him to marry my father. Mickey has been punched in the head so much from boxing his memories are distorted. His Mother was very abusive to me and my 4 other brothers. He claims abuse , but its a lie. His Mother would not allow my father to lay a hand on him. Yes, my Father did always tell him to toughen up, be a Man because he cried a lot. He left after high school to New York to live with his acting teacher, he had it made. We grew up in a large house in Miami Beach, my Father was a Sgt Detective. I am so sick of reading his distorted lies through the years. He also has always had a bad temper, growing up would punch walls if he didn't get his way. He is 3 years older than me. Don't believe everything you hear.
He hates Trump and obvious ran his mouth that got him in a lot of trouble there too.
Its time he comes clean about his life. He has blamed my father his whole life. We had 9 kids, why aren't all of us struggling? He is a drama king.
We got along growing up, I was closer with Joey than with Mickey. We all miss Joey. But Mickeys Mother is a wicked stepmother from hell. She was the abusive one to all of her stepkids. My Father is dead, its time Mickey tells the truth, it was his maternal father who was a drunk who abused him!

He messed up because he wasn't treated right or given the tools in life. Then seeing the same sh*t go down around him, he raged against the machine. I've respect for that. Mickey Roarke is a living journey through unlikely circumstance, an amazing odyssey of looking & achieving the best, then the hellacious plunge into oblivion, & again the tortuous climb back to stardom - "Sin City", "The Wrestler", "Once Upon a Time in Mexico", etc. He is & has always been bigger than life, a man's Man - never surrendering or settling for less, all the while giving it 100%. It was the boxing in the ring that addled his mental processes, changing him. Yet even beyond this ~ he is heroic - look up his bio, of his triumphs & his falls from which, each time, he climbed to his feet & NEVER surrendered.
God bless you, Mr. Morgan ~ this was a supremely wonderful segment. This is a guest who admitted his weaknesses, his faults, who did not revel in any BS ego-tripping that is a staple of Hollywood. In real life, he is a philosopher, a strategic analyst for the darkened woods, such a great guiding of moderator & guest interaction, Mr. Morgan negotiating the waters between blandness & blindness - able to reveal a surprising exposure of a guest most people could never figure out. Bravo, Sir. A gentleman, a genius - you are what EVERY talk-show host should be.

Micky Rourke has an incredible soul despite all his very difficult past and the way his life turned out to be as a proud man with a humanistic opinion. He is struggling with life's existence and its meaning, has been disappointed by so many and his strong non negotiable opinions and ego at times created much prejudice on his career. I met him once at Carlos N charlies on sunset in Los Angeles, if my memory is exact. I am a producer who moved to Morocco, won many awards including the highest price at the FESPACO festival. People from the industry would know it's the biggest African Festival in the world. I would love to hire this gentleman for my next film. May God bless him and keep his soul peaceful.
