Eg if ur using your phone whilst waiting for the res lights to go green u could miss the change this causing someone to drive up the ass of the car... I mean it’s just an example.

I’ve gone through a red light before while being on my phone stopped at the lights. The turning arrow went green and I went straight through the intersection because I wasn’t fully focused on the road or surroundings. Thank god there wasn’t an accident. It was after I had gone through the lights that I realised what had happened. I haven’t touched my phone while driving since. Accidents still happen at lights because of people using their phones. I also had a friend get rear ended due to someone texting while they were both waiting at the lights. The lady accidentally let go of the brake too much and her car rolled forward and hit my friends. $2000 worth of damage because the lady couldn’t wait till she got to her destination. So for those saying it’s a stupid rule, have obviously never been in or witnessed a situation like that.
It can be avoided by staying away from your radio if it has access to such stations as Hit105, NOVA, Triple J on occasion, etc. There is no cure and you will become a brain dead crack head if exposed.

I'm British and not familiar with Australian law on using phones. What if you are using your phone purely as a satnav? Can you guys use hands-free kits? Personally I hate even using hands-free. One thing I will say about you guys is you have got some dam cool cop cars!
It's very simple and the law actually excludes everything except making calls, using GPS/Nav and using the MP3 music functions. The phone has to be hard-mounted in a holder and you can only touch it "briefly and infrequently". Even when it's mounted you CANNOT txt, browse, Snapshat, Faceballs, look at dick pics or anything. It will get you pinged. And even if the cop decides and has evidence or reasonable judgement that the phone (eg: GPS) is distracting you they can ticket you. Distracted Driving is an offense in itself.
It sounds cunty but don't talk to the police - they're not there to sort out your day, they're there to stop/find crime, and ask you questions specifically to try and find out if you have committed a crime.

It's a matter of writing laws with consideration of how to enforce it. How do you define 'in control of a motor vehicle'? If you're stopped with your engine idling, you can say you are in control, even though there's a ridiculously small chance you hit a pedal and cause an accident. However, detecting if someone's engine running or not (rather than deciding what 'control' is) is a lot easier.
The time it took that last guy to notice the motorcycle cop next to him is the reason people with common sense don't do that shit.
