Nice that they went with classic gameplay, but the graphics have no style at all and look incredibly plastic and generic. They could have modernized it or went retro in a number of different ways.
The graphics could have used a little more style, I agree. It really feels like a HD version of Contra for better and for worse. Thankfully the gameplay felt so good to the point I paid less attention to the graphics while I was playing it plus you know how hectic Contra can get, sometimes there's no time to take in the sights anyways! But I agree with you!
I would have appreciated a more creative art style for sure but I will say that with how chaotic Contra can get, I didn't spend much time taking in the sites when I had the controller in my hand if that makes sense.
Ohh man, that's a shame that Contra isn't running well on Switch. I will be buying it on PS5, especially since the physical Switch version is a code in the box but I hope they can get the Switch version optimized before release.
Looks like such a cool game. Would love to have the Contra Collection for Switch. Contra: Operation Galuga seems to be releasing as physical for PS5 and XBox One/S here in the UK. The switch version is being released as a code in a box, unfortunately. I'd buy it if becomes available physically for Switch, maybe one day.
You should pick up the Contra Collection digitally! I've seen it on sale for $4.99 along with the Castlevania Collection. Yeah, I almost used the Switch version for my thumbnail until I saw the cover of the boxart stating there's a code in the inside. I think it's a real missed opportunity. There's a lot of physical Switch collectors and an install base of around 140 million Switch players. Contra started on Nintendo... You'd think that would be enough to spend the money to print the cartridges. I'll be picking up the digital PS5 version right when it hits the PS Store and then I'll double dip and buy a physical version to keep sealed from LRG.

SolCresta, I also love the game of the same name! I agree with you and I think it all really started for Contra on the PS1 with Legacy of War and The Contra Adventure and from that point was never really able to correct it's course which is really a shame. There were a few highlights from then to now, Contra 4 was great and I enjoyed Rebirth on the Wii. I think the sad thing is that we've seen this throughout the years with so many beloved franchises where they are so focused on trying to reinvent the wheel when nobody asked for that. I hope Wayforwad holds onto the reigns moving forward! 🤞
I played the demo yesterday and was pretty happy. Wayforward are fantastic. My only gripes were that clinging to walls was occasionally unreliable, the music was too quiet, and I had a couple glitches on PS4 where the music stopped completely. Still time to polish, but it will be a must buy for me.
Happy to hear you got to checkout the demo! WayForward really gets it IMO. With all the games I play, it's rare to find a company with a track record as good as theirs. The platforming felt slightly challenging at times including clinging to the walls but it felt as reliable or unreliable to me as Contra III The Alien Wars so I wondered if they did that intentionally or not? I didn't have any glitches on PS5 so hopefully it's something they have ironed on when the full game releases in just a few weeks. Nice, glad you are going to pick it up. I hope a lot of people go out and support Contra to the point that Konami continues publishing more games with WayForward as the Developer.
This felt like contra but I wasn’t feeling the music that much which was crazy seeing that these are the same developers who made Contra 4 which had a fantastic soundtrack.
Contra 4 on DS is such a gem too. Hopefully the full game will have a Sound Option to turn the music up because I noticed that as well. I wonder if there will be an option to use the NES or Arcade soundtrack? I remember Ducktales Remastered had an option to toggle between the new OST and the NES OST which I appreciated and I think fans really appreciated.

It really was, I hope that it gets to live another life outside of the DS version. It's too good to not release on more platforms. I'm sure it would need some considerable reworking to account for the 2 screens but when there's a will there's a way. While they're at it, let's get the Castlevania DS games modernized too!
"Contra" is always dear to me....i remember when it was released in NES, i would play "Contra" for hours....i love the scroll em" game play. This was my favorite, "Bad Dudes", ",Double Dragon", " Robocop" & "Ghouls n Ghost". Man...so much nostalgia. 🕹️🎮🕹️🎮🕹️🎮🕹️🎮
I'm with you 100%. Growing up, I played the heck out of all the games you named, especially Double Dragon, Ghosts N' Goblins and Robocop but Contra was always in a league of it's own. I too am a huge fan of the 2D sidescrolling gameplay and I feel like we've been eating pretty good lately between games like The Messenger, Cyber-Shadow, the new Double Dragon and TMNT Shredders Revenge. Happy there's still a market for these games to exist and hopefully thrive!
Ohh yeah, a direct sequel to Hard Corps would be absolutely insane. I feel like everyone would be happy to get a brand new game that plays like Hard Corps or The Alien Wars.

As of right now it's only local Co-Op with story mode being 1-2 players and Arcade mode you can play 1-4 players. I say as of right now because I have seen games release without a online multiplayer mode and later down the line they've received one. Now that you mention it I think Contra would really benefit from an online multiplayer mode. I had a blast playing TMNT Shredders Revenge with other players online.

You are right, those gems set the bar really high. Bought both of them on day 1 and both games killed it. Both stayed true to the original vision and gameplay but expanded upon it and both had awesome soundtracks. Right, it's 2024 and online play should be SOP especially when we are dishing out 40 bucks... I'm not surprised though because it's Konami. They seem to struggle these days with checking all of the boxes.
I agree with you that both mechanics make a big difference. By no means revolutionary but it doesn't need to be, it's the little things that really add up. Right, I think the game legit looks like a HD 2D Contra but not much more which is totally fine.

Yes, I actually own it physically. I remember the hype leading up to it as well. It was really supposed to be the long awaiting return to the classic contra formula but they just went too hard with the difficulty. Then I remember we got Neo Contra next on the PS2 and if I recall and it went from 2D to the top down view which once again was not what anyone wanted! 🤣

I haven't understood many of Konami's decisions over the past decade. IMO they've really mishandled Metal Gear, Contra and Castlevania for quite sometime now. The recent Metal Gear Solid Collection was a piss-poor effort in my any many others opinions. Outside of the Collections they've released, the last console Metal Gear game developed by Konami came out in 2014 and so did the last Castlevania game. WIld. They need to solicit customer surveys so we can help them stay on the right track! 🤣

Absolutely, I am a big fan of WayForward and mentioned them a few times in the video. Then also did a heck of a job on Ducktales Remastered! I agree, anyone who owns a DS should make it a point to play Contra 4 because that game is an absolute gem. I actually had it preordered back in the day at my local Best Buy!

Yes, they did Ducktales Remastered! That's right and you can tell by the style of games Yacht Club creates. I am a big fan of Shovel Knight and have been eagerly awaiting an update on a game they've been developing for the past few years now called 'Mina the Hollower'. If you haven't heard of it yet you will have to check out the trailer. It was supposed to release in December 2023 so it should definitely be out sometime this year!? 🤷♂️

Right! That's exactly how I felt after the Demo! I just wanted to keep playing and I actually did keep playing just to try out the different characters which is something I usually don't do but that just shows how much I enjoyed it! Shattered Soldier would be cool for sure!

Yeah way forward doing justice to games. Normally the music with way forward be loud without you even having to cut it up with TV remote.

C4 was amazing. I was blown away I had missed out on it. The fact it included the other games as unlockables=🔥

The dash mechanism and R2 weapon mecansim was the greatest development

This game was developed by wayforward. They also developed the masterpiece that is Contra 4 for the DS. Go play that if you haven't already.
