For someone who is a massive Star Trek fan but brand new to RTS games, ST Infinite is extremely daunting. It's great to have a 'Basics' video breaking the game down to a newbie level which is focused on Star Trek Infinite and not comparing it to Stellaris as I have never played that. Great video and VERY informative. Thank you!
Welcome aboard!
Your going to have a blast
This is a paradox RTS so the gameplay is daunting and you will likely fail in your first few games. But that is half the fun: figuring out the mechanics and how they interact.

@@Paul_Bedfordfail? Are the other factions just gonna come kill me for no reason or like im gonna die from the borg?
I wanted to address the mentions of the existence of the Star Trek mod, and as someone in the comments said; This is like comparing Fallout 3 & New Vegas. The latter is build on the former, and retains similarities of the original. However, once you look past the similarities, you'll see that Infinite is a far more narrative driven experience than the freeform sandbox of Stellaris. I'll have a proper review up soon.
There are at least two free total conversion Star Trek mods for Stellaris. ST: New Horizons and New Civilizations which both are still being developed.
The first example I thought of was Civilization 5 and Beyond Earth. Basically the same game mechanically, but different aesthetic and more of a narrative.
Ya, I kinda felt that in it's current state, STI feels too much like Stellaris for me to justify paying $30 for it when I can play a mod for Stellaris that, to me at least, looks far more developed and like it has more content going for it. Willing to be wrong on this, but the fact I can play any race including the Borg in STNH seems to be a better experience than STI in it's current form.
@@jagothegamer5750the mod is honestly kinda boring. All it really does it let you play as Star Trek races and that’s like, it. Any “flavor” the mods have is just sorta haphazardly thrown in, and there’s almost zero actual changes to gameplay. With STI meanwhile there’s a lot of stuff changed that makes it a different game all on its own. I won’t list them all here but suffice to say “Stellaris with a Star Trek coat of paint” is much more a thing the mod does, while this is pretty solidly it’s own thing.
@@craftsmenMC that's fair, though for me, I don't feel like there is as of yet enough content for me personally to spend $30 when I could just play the Star Trek mod. Glad you are enjoying the game though :)
Honestly, it's a spiritual successor to "Birth of the Federation", and it's about damn time.
That was what they were going for from the dev dairies.
I loved that game, I was talking to a co-working today about it, cant wait to download it when I get home.
I was thinking that. The galaxy map reminds me of that with its grid pattern. Missing the Ferengi Alliance at the moment. Also missing the Defiant... I think...
@@argentofox2567 It was one of the reasons I purchased it. I like the Klingon tutorial advisor speech at the beginning - Its in KLinGoN. Nice little touch.
@@antonycharnock2993 playing now as the sneaky little bastards lol (the romulans)
I want the crew system for Stellaris
That might actually make military academies worth it now that I think about it
I want all of these ships for Stellaris 😂
Would change up the game in a small way, but with a big impact. Make some civics very interesting.
It works really well as a substitute for naval capacity, imo.
Think I prefer this over naval capacity
The officers system is something that should be included in Stellaris.
This is an absolute godsend for someone who has never played something like this but was really wanting to learn. Thank you dude this is awesome!
You're welcome.
Very much so. Having last played a game like this with the original Endless Space I really need the help. Would love to see more in depth details of other important systems in the game. Thank you & live long and prosper!
I love this. I have been playing basic strategy games like Star Trek Armada for over 20 years, but have never gotten into this "modern" type of strategy, and just like you said, it's a bit overwhelming at start. For a hardcore trekkie like myself, the tutorial is very valuable and finally allows me to dive into the game. Many thanks!
This doesn’t seem worth 30 dollars for someone coming from Stellaris lol
I am kinda bummed out you don't start from scratch like the good old BOTF game
Thanks so much for this video! I was unsure about buying the game as I was afraid it was just a stellaris skin but i can see they put quite a lot of work into this, they get specific instead of procedurally generating the galaxy and have different advantages for the different factions. I may get this now 😊
Glad I could help!
Yet people will still claim it’s just a Stellaris skin without even looking at any of the new changed stuff. Le sigh.
At least this guide will never be out of date, lol.
I am conflicted and I really wish they did more to differentiate itself from Stellaris. It is so similar at this point to be more mod (maybe more like an expensive DLC) than a standalone game and sadly that is going to cloud people's notions about it. Especially after the news about HBS and how Paradox didnt want to make Battletech 2.
I am really on the fence here, it screams of the commoditizing of classic sci-fi that we are seeing right now thanks to corporations, and just not enough effort...
Maybe I will get it on sale, I just dont know.
this is originally a mod for stellaris
@@emphelele No, it's not. It's been worked by different people.
Of course they didn't want to make Battletech 2, Microsoft owns that IP, so it eats on their profit. A licensing deal with a television corporation is way cheaper (usually).
I disagree, there's seems to be a lot of effort in making this, of course Stellaris seems the base of the design, but they changed stuff around to make it feel a different game, this wasn't a game developed by Paradox but by Nimble Giant.
@@l4nd3r
My point was they turned down one GAME for using someone else's IP and made a DLC using another's IP.
I call this a DLC over a mod because it changes more than I expected but uses a lot more than I thought it would.
It also is not a at full price for games just be gald this is not CA this would be sold for 60 dollars instead of 30 @@lastfreethinker6810
I would have preferred a game where it spanned the Star Trek eras, from the birth of the federation to the future. Here I have the same ships that I basically had in birth of the federation in 1999 (speaking of the federation)
In the end it's stellaris but they could have added a progression of the eras, something more innovative and not a copy of the stellaris mod. I speak as a Star Trek fan for more than 30 years. I was really waiting for this game but I'm sadly disappointed
Doing that would have taken more time and cost more money before a retail release, can't be having that! Plus, unfair to compare it to the mod, as the mod has far more depth and features.
@@KiltedCritic plus there’s licensing issues with some of the earlier content
This is a new game, Startrek Infinity is just starting its journey. The game is still very raw, it will need a lot of updates, fixes and additions including DLC to make it look normal. But my closest complaint is, why is the card random again, what's the fun?! Is it not possible to make a permanent position and a canonical map? But this is not the only problem, we need more states, more ships, and we would like an end to the Iconian invasion.
Archer Era would be better than starting in TNG era. More opportunities for the map to fill up in different ways.
Not really what im looking for with Stellaris, reminds me more of hearts of iron where you are pushed along a path, given some decisions, whereas Stellaris drops you in and it’s your decision what you want to do. Best analogy i can think of is this mod is multiple choice question whereas stellaris is open ended. Still super cool to see a team behind a big name take on something like this, hope people like this and that it is something others follow suit in, just not my sauce.
I have been really vacillating over whether or not to pick this up... My son plays Stellaris and some of the stuff he's told me about his playthroughs sounded really neat, but it is just too big for me to jump into. When I heard about STI, I thought it would be perfect for me, but I get the sense that it is basically Stellaris Light. It looks like there is just so much less to do, with fewer options, possibilities, and relatively little replay value.
I guess I will wait and see if it continues to develop.
On the other hand, you could use it as a stepping stone to get into Stellaris. Learning how the UI is thought out, some of the mechanics of the engine, and so on. I would also be surprised if some of the features in ST:I would not wind up in Stellaris down the line.
@@Woffenhorst well, I picked it up, but it doesn't work.
When I first launched it, I received a warning that it was trying to change protected documents, then it closed. I have tried loading about a dozen more times, but can't get past the main screen. As soon as I click the tutorial button, it crashes.
@@jcraigwilliams70 Sounds like an issue with your system. If you are using high system security settings, it may interfere with the game generating configuration and game save files. Is it installed on the same logical drive as the OS? If so, try installing it on a separate one, the OS might feel safer letting the game create the files it needs on a drive that is isolated from the OS.
Looks like an official total conversion mod for Stellaris
What a nifty story-driven modified version of Stellaris. Rather unfortunate no one stopped to notice it spelled STI, though. What's next, Star Trek: Dimensions?
If you take that, you cant Name anything. I also liked when i saw someone with a World Taekwondo Foundation being written on it:)
nah std is already taken by star trek discovery, and rather fitting i'd say
althou i like star trek as much as the next guy. im kinda dissapointed for many reasons. i rather install the stellaris ST mod again then paying for this
Will u continue this format? I really want to play this game but damn i have no clue what to do....
Thanks for the start, great video.
Yes
Like other commenters, this definitely gives me BOTF vibes and, after playing for a couple of hours do feel like the bones of a good Star Trek experience are here. I hope that, similar to other Paradox games, this gets expanded and refined with DLC over time (adding the Ferengi, Dominion, and Delta Quadrant, bigger story trees with more branches, maybe more start dates (ENT? TOS?)) will keep my interest high. I just hope it doesn’t get abandoned
Two things that I find questionable about the game design (besides the misspelled words) is how late the game starts within the Trek universe but so much is still unexplored/not researched. Along with that you’re into the 2340s and there’s only Miranda class ships? No Ambassador, Excelsior or Constellation which canonically were in service alongside Miranda. You can get away with limited military ship designs from the get go with the other races because they generally haven’t had as many designs. With the late timeframe it SEEMS like it’d be a very truncated game length as well.
Damn, way more than a Stellaris reskin.
Cant wait to play the game and really exited to see what they do with expansions/dlc. One cool possible future feature could be that you 'let your species get assimilated' by the Borg and continue to play as them. Hope this does well so they can get a shot at a Star Wars conversion too!
You know what you want and I know it too: The Borg. And/or the Dominion.
Really helpful, especially since the tutorial appears broken on Mac and jumping straight into the full game is a bit overwhelming.
To use the line I piss my wife off with all the time for fun: "Gul Dukat did nothing wrong"
To be honest, it looks like anyone experienced in Stellaris will definitely get along well here. UI is so similar that I just think that the game is a Stellaris reskin.
no it is very different, just uses the Stellaris engine, i have a torrent rip version and yes it is very lore friendly and good, far better than Stellaris ST mods in many ways, though not all
@@shawntipton5078 I already bought it, just didn't get to play for now. Familiar enough that I won't have any problems.Edit: don't forget Workshop support will be coming too.
Thanks for this, a lot to take in, i ll have a go. Liked and subbed :)
Have fun!
I'm really tempted by this. I have Stellaris in my Steam library from 2018! Played it for a bit then and kind of enjoyed it at the time, but it fell off my radar as other stuff came out. I like the idea of a more streamlined and idiot-proof game in a Star Trek universe because one consistent complaint I've seen of Stellaris is the complexity and learning curve. I don't really have the free time to get to know a REALLY complicated game. However, the biggest criticism and hope I've seen for the ST: Infinite version is that it's a bit simple and basic to start with and is going to need DLC and expansions to keep it growing and interesting - much like the original Stellaris has evolved over time.
Sadly it's a licensed game from a media franchise that has become incredibly hit-and-miss in popularity and has not been well managed by Paramount. I'm not convinced that the IP owners would value the game enough as a product to really push it or encourage it. Combine that with some pretty hefty layoffs at the developer and I'm sadly not convinced it has much of a future. Steam charts aren't showing a huge or growing player base (fairly steep decline if anything) and I just don't think this game will get the opportunity to grow into its potential. With all that, I'm not sure I can justify the $40 price tag.
I do have Stellaris in my library so I may redownload and try the NEw Horizons mod. It sounds like it has a LOT of content and is getting good feedback.
Thanks a lot ASpec that vidéo help a lot for a guy who never play Stellaris =)
Glad I could help!
Wow just a modded Stellaris.... this reminds me of how they "modded" HOI2 after they finished up with the Armageddon version.... sad.
Awesome, that was a good primer on what I need to know and what is different from Stellaris and it passed the time while the game downloaded. Thanks Aspec, now to queue up the Dune Audiobook and start my first game.
would this be something for a stellaris veteran who played it for 2000+ hours? i already have the new horizon mod
Same question, but paying the full price for a stellaris clone while owning nearly every dlc from stellaris ... ahhh dont know man
I think so, the devs have access to the source code, and added some really interesting new components to the game to make it work with the setting. At the moment it's similar to Stellaris, because it's build on it. but I wouldn't be surprised that it'll become a completely different thing if it''s successful. But in the end it has to start somewhere.
The mission system from Hearts of Iron is an amazing addition though, I really like it. It's such a good fit to keep the narrative flowing.
If you like stellaris I imagine you’d like this cuss it’s basically stellaris but star trek
Well, it has warp drives for one.
@@A_Spec the mission system is cool I imagine they could do heart of iron type stuff like what if kinda missions
What if the federation became the Terran empire or the confederation
What if the Klingons won the war against the federation etc a lot of potential and of course dlc ideas as well
So it's a New Horizons mod but you have to pay extra for it. New Horizons - Ferengi Edition.
The New Horizons mod for Stellaris is better than this garbage they rushed out. Barely loads even.
In Birth of The Federation, there was an option to instantly 'buy' a ship if you have enough credits and you'll get it right away instead of waiting for it to get built the normal and long way. Is there a similar feature in this game?
Excited for Infinite. I played the Stellaris Star Trek mods, and they are good - but it never felt like I was playing in a Star Trek universe. It felt like a fan fiction and the very heavy emphasis on having the player relive past episodes through a series of pop-ups gets frustrating and slows down the gameplay. Give me just a star trek strategy without having to go through a history lesson of what this crew did in X episode.
Question: How does colonisation differ to Stellaris? I've colonised the planet beginning with D as the federation (at the start) and it's not growing.
Looks like a Stellaris mod I'm curious to see how much content is included for the price. In any case, there are only a few Races to choose from.
Still looks like they mixed hoi4 and Stellaris to me
Yeah just like Fallout New Vegas was.
@@ashbery76 That's probably the best comparison I've seen so far.
But this time you get to pay for the mod. ;)
I would love the playlist I hope it comes to console
Very helfpul. Thank you, sir!
at least you got it running I and many others have to refund as the game kept crashing to desk top, go check the steam forums I'd wait till they resolve alot of the bugs.
i have a question, although the fourth major factions are cool to play with, will they not unlock some minor factions like the Gorn or the Breen or the Tholians?
Thank you for making this awesome video!!! Having a blast with STI, having a lot more fun with it than I did with Stellaris, and I’m glad there’s someone like you helping people get used to the game. Live Long And Prosper!
Never played Stellaris, but I love Star Trek and this reminds me of the great Birth of the federation game, so I'm in.
Wow they got map messed up. Khitomer is a Klingon planet and the Romulans are supposed to be positioned above the Klingons with mostly minor factions/unexplored space between them and Cardassia. to nit pick 2 things.
Sure, the layout is a bit wonky. The UFP are also way to small, and there's transwarp corridors you can use. I can get over the changes for the sake of gameplay.
The Klingon colony on Khitomer was destroyed by the Romulans. Not much is said about what happened after, but it makes sense that it was taken over by the Romulans.
Also at this point, the Klingons and Romulans were neighbors. The map is mostly accurate, with some liberties taken for gameplay purposes.
@@A_SpecI noticed that too. All the powers seem way too small for a 2346 start. The map looks like a 2161 start! However, like you said, it’s for gameplay reasons.
Portraits need more diversity, white males are under represented.
Looks suspiciously like Stellaris.. :/
Great intro to the game. I'm still sad the game seems to be a messy tangle of bugs and poorly designed systems. I really thought paradox would nail a smaller game but it seems the "release fast improve slowly" philosophy was applied here as well.
Thanks for this. The in-game guidance does such a terrible job of explaining all these things
Wish I could get mine to run. Downloaded and press launch and nothing. Had to run from local files and can only play the Federation. So i’ll try uninstalling and reinstall to see if that works. Yes I did run the verification on the files. Crossing my fingers
Try running it in windowed mode
So is science ship merged onto some military ships, at least for the Fed?
It feels weird if we are still stuck to sending out unarmed science ships as the pioneers of exploration like in Stellaris, since almost all Starfleet ships should be "science ships".
Brah, how many man hours of Stellaris and Stellaris related gameplay have you played?? It must be YEARS. My earnest and sincere congratulations on a life very well lived thus far.
Thanks for the working review. All in all I think I’ll wait a few months to see if they iron the kinks out. Montu did a great review which exposed SOOOO many bugs. Also the heavily railroaded experience grinds me gears (make it a “new game” option to select or not, for crying out loud) as well as the massively reduced politics and ascension tree options. As it stands, I can’t see much replayability once you’ve done all 4 playable empires.
I’ve got high hopes for this… but at the moment it just isn’t there for me to part with £30.
I could not see the select species options when starting a new game, I found online that if you go to settings and lower the UI settings it then shows up, I set it to.8 and it seems to work. Hopefully if anyone else was googling around about this problem someone might see this comment... Seems a silly problem to encounter so early.
If anyone else knows ways to fix other than UI scaling please comment
this is stellaris in trek
Even with this.. I can only imagine ppl who have played stellaris will play this .. because most of the things that are basic for this game. We're additional things added to stellaris over time. There's sooo much todo before you even press play 😅. Unless the combat looks better then stellaris I can't imagine this doing well? 🤔
Thanks. Is the first game I buy previous to relese.
Thanks, just the video I’ve been looking for. Would love you to run through some of the other systems in the same way.
I'll be doing Cardassian Economy, Klingon Warfare, and Romulan Expansion videos in the next 24 hours. Stick around for those.
-When I click "Second Contact" on the USS Cerritos nothing happens? Do I have to do something else?-
Ohh, you have to then left-click another "nation"
Ah this is def worth 30$ for me, arguably more. I appreciate your non biased breakdown of the game!
Seems like there isnt much here if you already own Stellaris.
Thanks for making this weekend a little quick and easier to enjoy!
Any time!
So this is a official stellaris mod?
Lots of information, but it's not "basic" enough. I watched this person do "simple" things, but quickly click through multiple screens to get there and not explain any of it. Very frustrating to go back and forth, pausing the game and zooming in sonI can read what it says. He also doesn't tell you that every game will play differently from the beginning. Some things remain the same, but random events will pop up shaping the game differently than is being demonstrated, so one must pay very close attention.
Takeaways are:
1.Be prepared to rewind a LOT
2. Find another tutorial that will explain basic functions if you've never played this or Stellaris before.
I heard the AI is brain dead and never attacks the player. Also a lot of the Stellaris ease of play improvements arent in this game.
The best way to play is to uninstall and request a refund. Then install the Star Trek New Horizons mods for Stellaris.
Sure it has more of a narrative but since when was a narrative ever important to a 4X game?
Unless it's a historical game like Total War.
This is literally just a Star Trek skin with a little bit more writing than the mods. If you want to play only 4 factions with a slight story, go for it. If you want to play as over a dozen Star Trek factions throughout the prime Trek time line, just get the mods. This is just a lazy cash grab.
Switching ‘tween the system and galaxy map is the “M” key? That’s gonna be annoying as hell.
This looks like modded Stellaris
I think I'll pass on this. I want to explore more alternatives. What if we met the Tellarites instead of Vulcans? What if we were the Terran Empire? A government not founded on the United Nations that has actual rights? Perhaps the Ferengi instead as allies rather than Klingon? It's just too small.
The great thing about this game is it's based on Star Trek, the bad thing about this game is it's based on Star Trek. What I mean is, the game has a great premise and concept but is a bit limited. After having played all 4 of the major races several times I have discovered that each game plays out more or less the same. Very little changes from game to game and that limits it's replay value. Having said that, what it tries to do it does pretty well, and for Star Trek fans I think they will have fun, at least for a while.
It looks kind of underwhelming 😢 but I will buy it and give it a try. If paradox makes money from it maybe they won’t become abandonware
Is this game coming to console? I have a laptop that is fairly new but I don’t know the specs of this game and I want it to last for years so I probably won’t download it on there. I heard it’s coming to Xbox I really hope that’s true, can someone confirm that?
While this is really good, you are clicking on things so fast and not explaining where you're clicking. Remember, you're a veteran teaching beginners.
The Federation can go to war you just need to meet some criteria first.
The easy war to start…
Support bajor
Ask cardassians to free bajor
When they say no start war to liberate bajor. Bam war.
feels like they wanted to add missions and mtth events to stellaris, but stellaris is pure sandbox, so nothing to attach to... well fine by me, only im not that of a fan of startrek(not hater either)... so we'll see what they have to offer
Honestly I want to build a monument in your honour. I played the tutorial and left going....wut??? This has been awesome!
its basically stellaris 3.0. with limitations. Ill hold off for now however it seems like its cool. I really like the models they used.
ll those little coloured icons down the left of screen are not showing up for me and i can't find how to get them to. please help. the 2 yellow ones at the bottom are, so its not a screen edge thing
A new Stellaris mod or what is this?
It looks like Stellaris if I’m going to be honest
or does stellaris look like star trek infinite?!
That makes sense, they took a slightly older version of stellaris and made it into this game. It probably better seen as a stellaris standalone dlc with a dedicated scenario
@@Nightstalker565 yeah this is like a bad Stellaris Total Conversion... and they added Hearts of Iron Focus Trees because.... why not
@@britlakerBad? What makes it bad? It's a good total conversion.
Starting in the 2300s is such a massive turnoff for me.
I had thought I came across another Stellaris mod upon seeing the system screen. Downloading now.
The Star Trek mod for sins of a solar empire seemed better 🤷♂️
It feels like Stellaris without DLC with a light sprinkling of Hearts of Iorn.
Hu? Could have started by explaining what this even is? A mod? what?
Well that’s already very screwed up, as far as the galaxy map. Betazed is supposed to be near the Romulan neutral zone! A key issue of Betazed’s location, is that Romulans or Cardassians could see it as strategically key, in any invasion of the Federation. But you can’t have that, if Betazed is completely the opposite end of the quadrant! 🤦🏼
I can understand some discrepancies from canon, in a game where the engine and map obviously have their limitations. But this is really screwing the pooch!
Something tells me I won’t be playing Star Trek : Infinite, until it’s been through several updates.
Additionally - Why the fluff would you put Wolf 359 so far from Earth?! Wolf 359 is even in the Local Cluster in vanilla Stellaris! 🤦🏼
how do i make a fleet properly? some fleet got only 1 ship in federation . idk im new to this game
It makes no sense to set andoria a mining world before you even have build a single mine. Its just a waste of energy. Switch after building a mine, not before😮 I would also not sell food this early on, you need 2000 for a colony ship. There are also events, tagged to the first expansion. This is not stellaris, you should think about other priorities on the market. Denebula is also the weakest possible first colony. Sometimes you can even build a single district because of the blockers.
Mainly because of long term planning. Theres more potential minerals on that world compared to the others.
Saw a different streamer.... good thing your still among the best as you ACTUALY know the shipclasses and stuff about trek.. watching him yesterday pre launch was making my ears bleed...
I know enough to say that the Excelsior class is the best hunk of metal the Federation ever put into space and that Galaxy fanboys don't know what they're talking about.
Actually, belay that. The Curry class is my favourite.
how do you increase influence? I never understood how to get more of that even in stellaris
At the breakneck speed you’re going through this, this just seems to be a video for Stellaris players, who will know how to play it anyway. I’m not a Stellaris player and although I am picking up some limited information, a mouse cursor blur of movement and a speed-gabbled account of what you’re doing isn’t really that helpful. For me at least.
Ok what happens if your poor survey vessel gets attacked right away!
Please do more Stark Trek Inf tutorials. Very Helpfull!!
YAY! Because Stellaris got way too damned complicated.
These vids are deff helpfull! For the life of me i cant figure out how to get the govenor ship. Seems you had it from the start? dont have one in my first playthrough, could be a bug...
You have to hire a governor through the hire screen. Itll spawn the character and the ship. Its...a bit weird.
For me, the sandbox is what makes the game fun and replayable. I spent a lot of time in the early 2000 playing "Star Trek: Birth of the Federation" a 4x turn based strategy game. The player picked one of five TNG era empires and led it to glory in the hostile galaxy. This should have been a modern version of this game. Oh well, I guess ill keep playing Stelaris with approximations of Start Trek empires/races in it.
I'm currently playing as the Romulans and naturally my first thought for assimilating minor powers was subjugation. But claims don't give you a subjugation causus belli so I annexed them outright. Then on the diplomacy screen the button for proposing integration isn't even there! Assimilating minors is required for the Romulan mission chain, is it just broken right now?
Most people are not going to remember Birth of the Federation. That game was more influenced by Civilization II than Stellaris. It is several gaming generations in the past and let's be honest, Gaming tends to age much more quickly than other mediums. Stellaris was the clear influence even if Birth of the Federation was the ''spiritual influence."
hmm so if a fed player goes conquest does that mean they become the terran empire?
Nice Stellaris mod.
how to claim system in fedaration?
