- Star Trek: Resurgence reviewed by Will Borger on PC, also available on PlayStation and Xbox.
Resurgence does an admirable job of capturing the spirit of Star Trek in a Telltale style game. The choices are almost never easy, but the lack of a morality system or any indication of what you’re “supposed” to do creates a sense of freedom to act how you imagine these characters would.

We need many more of these Double A games to fill out catalogues. It may not have crisp graphics and the mechanics may feel a little janky, but in a climate where things are either game of the year triple A’s or 2D experimental indie darlings, these are the games that take chances and offer truly unique and engrossing experiences. The type found all over the generations from 15-20 years ago. It’s always the weird janky ones that are remembered fondly on down the road for what they tried to pull of; whether it was executed perfectly or not.

Mordhau is a pretty fun game in that category, although it is a PvP game.

3 hours in and I'm having a blast! It's really a Star trek game, like no other has achieved.
Can you design your own Jara? Pick race and design her look, or is she a canned character? This is quite important to me.

Even better than the 90s and early 2000s Star Trek games on GOG? Some of those are just fantastic. Especially the point and click adventures. And Bridge Commander games.
The game is not triple A, it didn't have a budget equal to a blockbuster movie, doesn't have big name voice actors. Isn't a technical marvel that only works on a rtx 4090, wasn't developed in 8 months and isn't a first person shooter you try to get up to 144fps with. It's a story game, made with a modest budget, trying to be like the star trek shows and movies back in the TNG years. It's about the personal interactions, science, discovery and conflict. Put aside the technical desires, and ask if you're curious about this game if you want a cinematic sci-fi game about choice and personal interaction. If yes, get it.

Brother nobody is gonna open a Star Trek game in 2023 hoping its a FPS Shooter.
Sounds great to me. Star Trek is always at it's best when it's produced on a low budget.

This is the best ST game we can get as of now. If you love TNG - this is a must. Great story, great characters (cameos!). Also, there's a point where you have to actually pause the game and WATCH s01e05 of TNG to get the most of the lore. Awesome!
Finally a ST game that feels like ST. The only thing about this is that its not properly polished. However, you have to give the studio some credits on doying a game based on 90s Trek, that actually uses canon and is designed for the fans. Lets support it and see if more is to come!

An absolute belter of a story, great characters and choices that have consequences that are often unforeseeable but always make sense. 10/10 from me.
Animation and controls could be smoother. And the Tricorder definitely needs to be fixed in any sequel. But overall it’s a great story and the voice actors are superb.
what planet u on the voice actors aren't superb as there were no real startrek chars that lend there voice only generic unknown people that lended there voices to play the chars in this game
@@wolfsterjones891 it's a double A studio, they didn't have that huge a budget; give em more money and you get them! And they're still great tbh, perhaps they get the game even better for a sequel!
@@abhishekjain2444 no sadly they won't the game not selling well and guessing price will drop soon from 39 to maybe 15 between 20 around july 4 or sooner depending how badly they are hurting on the sales. People are upset it old graphics like from startrek voyager elite series and no 4k and no higher than 30 fps

Always interested in Star Trek and what games are coming out. The graphics could do with a tweak whilst they still look promising and one can see the effort put into in this game overall

Can't wait to play this. Might be the best since Bridge Commander, 25th Anniversary, and Judgement Rites. (if you can handle early 90s point and clickers, those last two are my favorite Trek games of all time)
After all these years someone did a star trek game right! Its a little clunky but has all the great components which mades star trek great in the 90s.

Might have to check this one out eventually. Big Trek fan and have just been waiting for a solid game.
You might want to wait for a patch: only 1080p (most probably won‘t ever be patched), capped at 30 fps, stutters (!?), severe bugs with dialogue lines, (possibly game breaking. Happened 3x in the first 2 hours) where a line is repeated and the next one is skipped to keep the pacing up.

I'm enjoying it so far, and it's $40+
It does reminds me of Mass Effect and it's choice based system, hell, even the combat is cover based like Mass Effect...
In a way just like Mass Effect was inspired by Star Trek, Mass Effect inspired this game.
Looking forward to trying this out once it eventually releases on Steam.
Some hiccups with repeated audio and clunky mechanics out the gate, which hopefully can be fixed with a software patch. Other than that, not bad.

LOL 30 fps in 2023 is an ABSOLUTE SHAME.
Not that it matters all that much but do the graphics look horrible to everyone else? They look like they’re not fully loaded in about to pop in with more detail but it never does

Well we already have an unofficial Star Trek series in Mass Effect.. But this looks like a keeper too.. Thats amazing how this actor could get the OG Spock voice down.. I'm actually used to hearing Nimoys voice being a massive Civ fan

My issue with PC version are the prompts (press RT) which asks me to use an xbox controler even though none is currently attached to my pc.
You can change that in the pause menu.

This game looks to be a lot more like Star Trek than any 'new' Trek we have today.
It's nice to see a Star Trek game that isn't just space ship battles.

So he praises the game 99% of the review, then gets to the verdict and the music builds to a crescendo, and boom ! 7!!! I know that isn't a bad score, but he may want to explain why a 7 , since he said very few negative things. Do the tricorder sections bring it down that much???
Is that a serious question? 30fps lock, wtf is that. That makes it a 3/10 for me let alone a 7, forget everything else wrong with it.
the "gamified" mechanics can be a bit groan inducing but the story and characters kept m eplaying and enjoying this game.
Why do the shuttles always seem to have the appeal of a flying brick?

Absolutely loving the game, on second playthrough, it's nice to be able to play a different type of Star Trek game as to always playing Star Trek online
Only had a few dialogue issues where it would repeat or cut short and frame rate issues nothing that affects gameplay

Long time trekkie playing on Xbox One, definitely fun but annoyed that you can't invert the y-axis for aiming and moving the camera.

You get in a science vessel, and pressed on to do diplomacy missions... lol, Star Trek indeed.
It's normal in star trek for starships and their captains to be on diplomatic/peacekeeper missions. No matter the class of vessel. The tos enterprise is a constitution class that was for science and exploration. But the enterprise does diplomacy too😃🖖
The Star Trek IP is perfect for the Telltale style.

Game Pass title?
The game is fun, but sadly it's one of those games where the choices are an illusion. Certain people will die and certain events will play out and you cannot change that, which is a shame. There are far better designed games, like the Dark Pictures Anthology and Until Dawn, etc, there the choices make a real difference. So, Star Trek is great to play through... ONCE, but sadly it has ZERO replay value.
Wish they'd make an actual Star Trek game. Anything Telltale makes shouldn't be classified as a game from a legal standpoint. More like a choose your own adventure and press a button real fast every 30 minutes.
This is a small thing; but the music could be a bit better. It sounds like older MIDI and at times the sound mixing distract from the dialogue. It would’ve been cool if they could’ve used some notes from other parts of the franchise, though maybe that’s licensing issues.

Basically this game is like those of us who remember "choose your own adventure" books. Tons of console games out there which are better than just shooting things but these story games get boring after awhile.

holy the ships classes alone.. we can meet again even when its a sequence in the game is awesome...
but the engine why why why. . . unreal 5 is there ..oh why...the poor animations kills me too every time...the rest looks well thought. .
