Carolina Traveler: Amphicar

- A car made to run on land and in the water, actually sold back in the 1960s.
But that was a long time ago, until one man got ahold of one, a man who was "good with tools".
So the Carolina Traveler buckled in one day for the first running, all-in, seeing if we would literally sink or swim
This one of the most interesting videos there has ever been on the intetnet! Good old Amphi still has the power to amaze! They always were special!
I like how old school the car looks and that's a cool feature to drive it around in water.
I was lucky enough to see one of these floating around in a local lake in the early 90s when I was a kid
I just love how clean it looks.
Boy did I ever grin watching this! Thank you!!!
I literally just saw an amphicar in Dover NH about 5 minutes ago at the intersection by the Dover ice rink/Mr. Mikes gas station! Cool little car, wonder if it’s this one, identical paint color, wheels, trim, everything…
Neighbor still has two of these he has owned since the early 70s. Red one and an orange one. Used to take them out on the lake here all the time. Haven't seen them outside the garage in about 20 years. Always a huge crowd gathered round when he drove them into the lake.
Disney Springs has a restaurant named "The Boathouse" which offers rides around the lake to paying customers in one of their 8 flawless Amphicars. It is the coolest thing imagineable. Captain Adrian was very knowledgeable and provided a wonderful highlight to a recent vacation.
I would love to go to a lake with one of these and everybody else spends 10 minutes unhooking their boats and stuff and I'm just like "hey boys how's it going"
Just FYI I'm in the video and we knew the car was going to float of course :-)
I'm from Worcester MA. We had a dealership, called "Village Rambler" that had a couple of these on the lot. We had a Rambler American Custom Cross-Country Wagon that we used to have serviced there. The mechanic took me for a ride in a white one. I was 5 y.o. We didn't go into the water though! I remember the propellers in the area of the exhaust pipes. Not practical for our highly salted environment, but a neat idea none the less.
What a nice thing to do. People did stuff like that back then. Wish I could go back to those times! All the little niceties which made a difference
Here is the burning question .... Who called the cops. Sherifs/ game wardens don't normally go out on lakes unless they are called or looking for people fishing without licence.
Matrim Someone who calls the cops on their neighbors for having a backyard bbq party, not wearing face masks, and not social distancing.
Lol they do around here. On the water all daylight hours and at night too on holidays
I'm 16 years old, and one day, I want to get one those, I like weird vintage cars like that, and to have something like that just to drive around and mabey same day drive it in the water (that would work) would be just so much fun!
Same! I've just turned 16 and to own one of these Amphicars would be a dream come true haha! 👍
That looks like fun!
Oh, & BTW this was Summer o' '63. "Village Rambler" eventually became an American Motors dealership. The garage is now a Morgan Goodwill store & the showroom became New England Roast Beef, a sandwich shop. I'll always remember the Amphi's parked in the lot. There was a white one & a red one. My mum said that weren't practical, but they looked good to a 5 y.o. me. Nice to see one up & about!
“How you like that!” Hahah
Love that car/boat! Would be awesome to own one!
Imagine if car manufacturers aimed to achieve unique features like this instead of pointless numbers.
The cops always ruin the fun. Well at least they got a warning.
That was such good timing. “We’ve worked on it for 25 to 30 years”. Hubcap falls off.
awsomecakes
I have seen a anphicar before!
This would be a perfect get away vehicle. Lol. Imagine.
Suprised they aren't being made in Mexico.
@@kensims4086 James Bond should've used one. With a more powerful engine so you could go more than 9 mph in the water of course.
@@kensims4086 lol
These were quite popular in the 60's. A friend of mine had one. Why did the cop stop them? This is what the car was made for. The cop gave them a warning, I would love to know the reason other that having a historic plate.
+Grace Carrin unregistered boat. Boats have to be registered. The car registration doesn't count once its in the water.
It had to be registered as a car and a boat. Also you have to have life preservers for everyone in the car.
No life preservers. Bothering people about having enough life preservers and checking to see if they're s**tfaced drunk are the two things all Lake & River Cops consider to be their life's mission.
You have to have the ID numbers and registration stickers displayed just like real boats do.
Awesome cars
They need a better engine though. That was really their big flaw
Very cool !
lol when the county lake cop shows up. "LICENSE AND PROOF OF ADEQUATE FLOTATION DEVICES, PLEASE."
Awesome bro
Thats not weird. Other things are way weirder than a boat car
It rides a little low in the water to be taking on passengers.
Look up the hydra spyder. Corvette that drives into the lake
So much cool stuff used to be made -- now everything is just crap.
I heard the V.W. Bug can do that too
Except it doesn't actually have props.
A James Bond car issued by Q Branch. Hehehehehe.
I get a kick out of everyones reaction. An old thing becomes new and unusual. I guess growing up by the shore this was not too unusual. What was unusual was having calm waters where these car owners could drive them in the bay. It is said only 400 hundred were made... I cant believe it because I know four that are in the NE, NY and NJ. I still laugh at the skepticism and the shocked reactions they had during this video.
Got a ride in one once, right place at the right time. And since I knew what it was, that may be as much fun as the ride, watching the reactions on onlooker's faces at the lunatic driving into the water.
Never sold it to pawn stars?
This producer's facts are almost 100% wrong... oh will...
Riding in the water not on the water
Does any one know of an Amphicar that is for sale???? Any condition will be considered!!!! Send me a note if you do!!!!
Look on the Hemmings Motor News website, there's always at least five on there.
