Sending this to the homie that's struggling with monks. He's getting very discouraged with his monk in Baldur's. Thanks, Offbeat
There are some really nice staved that have additional damage on it in act one plus a ring that adds 2 poison damage. I’ve one shot bosses at lvl 6 with my monk. Monks are crazy strong in this game not so much in dnd.
@@Mike_W78 If I remember right monks could also be strong in Neverwinter Nights as well. If you spec them properly.
@NikoLuv my build for my monk consists of Fighter lvl 1 to get Heavy Armor prof and Defense Fighting stance with running a shield and any jewelry/cape to bump up my AC. Currently at 24AR and could've got 25 if I didn't miss a ring. Then I did 6 levels monk and 3 levels Rogue to get thief subclass for extra bonus action and 2 levels druid to get Circle of Spores subclass. I hit like a truck with tons of movement, can talk to anyone and have guidance and have incredible out of combat utility and tanky as hell
@@IANARCHER101fun fact monk can hit around 25 ac with just clothing later on in bg 3
I think there's also a set of boots you can get that adds your wisdom proficency to your damage roll when your do an unarmed strike
there's also a few gloves that add 1d4, 1d6 or even 1d10 to unarmed attacks
The 1d10 gloves give a free heal every turn, so go with that. But even better, Tavern Brawler's STR-doubling feat works for monks. So down a potion of Hill Giant or Cloud Giant Strength, and suddenly you have more STR than DEX, and all your strikes are calculated against a STR bonus of +5, which gets doubled for each punch! Along with the boots of kushigo, that means you can have +16 to +18 damage per punch, before you even calculate the dice averages!
@@romxxii Would the Cloud Giant Strength Elixir be better then Elixir of Bloodlust?
@@McDudeswith tavern brawler, yes, absolutely, without a doubt
@@adamskeans2515 tah I tried it and damn was it amazing. Did 104dmg with the double hit ability
Recently started a monk run to try out the class , dip into multiclass for the first time with rogue and see how it works and then you drop this video. Love it, i'm excited for this playthrough XD
I love Charisma, since it helps in almost all conversations... but Wisdom is rather important as well... I may change my Charismatic Fighter into a more Wisdom based Person 😂
@@jackwriter1908 You kind of need 1 charisma based person for the "face" of the group and one wisdom based to see all of the traps. You should also have 1 strength/dex character to um.. place barrels where they need to go. Accidents happen. Barrelmancy can solve a lot of "problems".
@@mal35m _Barrelmancy_ the mightiest of magics that exists 😂
Yeah, I am soon collecting Karlach, so strength will exist. I do enjoy Warlocks, though I am not sure if I will pull Wyll in the group... to be honest if I wouldn't want my main to be a martial character I would have just chosen the Bard, to be the best in all skill checks 😂
@@jackwriter1908 Yeh, there were times where i wanted WIS for dialogue checks on CHA chars, can't have them all :D Although there are ways to help checks on a MC that's not focused on charisma: Enhance Ability from Cleric/Druids/Bards that give advantage on CHA checks, Bards can give you inspiration, Guidance ofc, illithid expertise etc Unless you go certain routes where you care to pass 30 checks on companion persuasions, it should be ok :D
@@rsick266
Thaumaturgy is also useful, to gain advantage in... performance and intimidation, if I remember correctly.
That’s a lot of damage 👀👀👀
The scary thing about this build... you can still slap 2 levels in fighter in for action surge
The scary thing is the flood of magic items that allow you to go plus ultra. Screw potions, give my monk armor and there's no mountain they can't reduce to atoms
Aaand, it's there an object that let's you receive damage for a pseudo action surge
The flawed hellrider gloves are great for this too! Add another d4 of damage on top plus the chance to cause bleeding means you can absolutely annihilate stuff
Thief Rogue is so good that it elevates everything else around it because of how valuable action economy is in this game. It actually makes Two Weapon Fighting really strong because your off-hand attacks are bonus actions. A Fighter with Thief Rogue would be reliably doing 4 attacks per round (without factoring in Action Surge), which is more than the 3 attacks you get at Level 11 (of 12). Add on the Dual Wielder feat and you can dual wield non-light weapons like long swords, and the +1 to AC is a nice little bonus too.
I am glad you are covering this build. This is the build I'm going with for my main character. I've gotten all the way to level 12 with this. It is insanely fun.
5 blade bard, 3 rogue thief, 2 fighter.
Congratulations you are now a semi-Auto gun.
Now imagine that adding the damage from a lvl 1 Barbarian's Rage to every hit, and adding two more hits from an Action Surge on top of Tavern Brawler doubling Strength.
That just sounds like a fuckin anime character tbh
@@MinimalxEffort Well, I did flavor Rage as Kaio-Ken on my own Monk.
if im not mistaken, rage do not increase unarmed attacks, only melee weapons attacks, throwing and improvised attacks. From the raging monk you get thhe damage reduction from rage that is actually very good.
@@pvpelillo2054 Rage affects strength based attacks, doesn't it? With Tavern Brawler Monk, you're focusing on Strength as the attack stat.
Wrong. Lets add in 3 levels of fighter. This gives action surge. 1/long rest you get to have everything you just did again. So those 6 attacks turn into 12. Add in a potion of speed and looky there. 12 turns into 24.
Just got baulders gate! Been loving all the recent content on it and am excited to see what it has in store 👀
I've had fun with monk in 5E with all the utility. But there are just better options. Seeing monk finally getting some love is awesome.
I hired the monk hireling, and it’s been so fun lol. I also just thought of doing a thrown weapon build using frenzy barbarian and thief rogue, to throw the returning pike 4 times in a turn for no real resource cost
give it to the cleric, another attack with spiritual weapon
You can add in a few levels of spores druid, or 2 levels of fighter. Either way, you have even more damage. Man I am glad that monk is finally good.
I was already gonna do a monk build but this makes it better
This was awesome!
This build, while hasted, can one-turn-kill the netherbrain. Imagine this build with the ilithid buff!!
I read somewhere that tavern brawler also doubles strength proficiency to hit. I realize you are just calculating damage, but that is insanely powerful as well (unless they nerfed it in a patch)
Monk has been the most fun I've had in the game.
This is exactly the build I was going for!
Love monks and I'm so glad that they do so well in BG3.
A build I'm going for that you might want to talk about but which is potentially rather boring is what I would call Grand Champion Fighter:
Choose the Champion subclass of fighter (of course). At level 4, you take the Grand Weapon Master feat. Every time you crit you have a chance of dealing an additional weapon attack as a bonus action. So if you combine that with the thief's additional bonus action, and increase the critical hit chance, you can basically have a decent chance to hit 3+ times per round in a fight. Not to mention the increased chance if you take Savage Attacker.
Aside from 6 levels in fighter (for the second feat) and three levels in Thief (for the extra bonus action) I'm not exactly sure where to go with this build.
I'm working on this with Lae'zel, and by giving her the Shattered Flail she's able to self-heal to an insane degree. However, I'm not sure what weapons or items I should get to enhance this type of build in particular. As you are more familiar with the game and its systems, I'd like to see what you can do with this!
Gloves of dexterity are crazy when combined with this if you take every point out of your dex and put them into your wisdom you can have a garunteed 18 dex strength and wisdom if done right with other potential item
I was sold on the 3 bonus actions.
Absolutely making a monk and equipping Mighty Cloth and getting Tavern Brawler as a feat.
And there is a way to turn your Ilithid ability’s into bonus actions. Most fun.
There is even a helmet in the game that also gives you another BA, so you can have up to 4 BA
Also by being a wood elf not only do you get 5ft more movement but you also are proficient in longbows, which might sound irrelevant but there is a bow which decreases the die you need to roll for a crit by 1. This basically gives you a dip in champion without even going there combine this with your 8 attacks and your damage increases a little bit. I haven't tested this but you maybe dont even need proficiency in the bow to use the effect so in that case just play a half-orc to increase the crit damage
Monk build of any kind in bg3 go brrrrrr.
one of my first DnD builds I made on DnD beyond was a Kensei monk that fought with a longsword and no shield - had a couple interesting combat features such as stunning strike and agile parry (attacking once with an unarmed attack of the multi attack to increase AC by 2) and still be a single sword wielding character.
so in BG3 when I found my first finesse longsword I wanted to make that my character - 4 levels later I had gotten some magic items upgrading unarmed strikes so I respecced into open hand and started ANNIHILATING enemies - seriously anyone below 75 hp did not survive 1 round not to mention I could run around and topple/prone or stun multiple enemies in one round. I felt really, REALLY strong
Well now I know what build I'm making my githyanki playthrough
The d4 damage gloves iirc are act I. You can get them at level 2, but you shouldnt because that ends a lot of quest threads. But after handling the grove, you'll be about level 5 and you can go buy them without consequence. They also have a nice little added bonus that if for some reason you arent close enough to hit something, they come with a spell.
You can also get around this point armour that adds +2 dex. So you can have 20 dex and 18 wisdom.
Earlier than the fire gloves theres gloves that build stacks and give + to hit and damage until it consumes the stacks for a d8.
At the end of act 2/start of act 3, there's boots that adds your wisdom to damage.
There's an amulet in act 1 that recovers ki and gives some spells.
Monk gets a lot of crazy items, and I know there's ones I'm forgetting about.
Theres also a generic martial item that gives you better Haste without downside for an extra action.
You don't even have to use potions, strength monk with heavy armor only really loses out on movement speed and projectile snatching. By act 2 you can have a strength modifier of 6 without magic items, plus tavern brawler. 8 in punch monk, 3 in thief rogue and 1 in figher for heavy armor proficiency and fighting style (later magic items mean you can neglect the level in fighter for an additional ki point or feat). It's just so much fun running around like a knockoff captain America, heavy armor and shield.
2 levels in war domain cleric many more bonus attack per long rest. it absolutely insane, the ounch keep on coming ZAM
my favorite part about monk, is that they get Wuxi Finger Hold! Class action unarmed strikes to resonate ki + extra attack + thief rogue, means that if enemies are clumped up, for *ONE* Ki point you do a 3d6 force AEO in a 5m radius, detonating ALL OTHER KEY IN RANGE dealing the 3d6 for every creature in range, again, and its *so much fun* in one of the encounters I hit 4 people and for *one* ki point that turn killed them all when they had around 80 hp each lmao
There's a magic item that gives you an extra bonus action when you're under 50% health
this is all I want for 5.5monks
Great video; I'm looking forward to playing wit a monk. That said, as I understand the class mechanic, the Wholeness of Body gives a total of 3 bonus actions, one per turn for 3 turns. If you throw in the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength to the Tavern Brawler feat, and that's a whole lot of butt-kicking. ON TOP OF ALL THAT, you can also buff with haste spell or potions to get even more its in! As for other builds, I wonder how this build would compare to how much damage the Monk-9/Champion 3 would do with action surge and improved critical hits.
Don’t use the gauntlets of hill giant strength, use the gloves of life stealing. Drink an elixir of Cloud Giant Strength instead. Strength 27 plus an extra d10 Force damage
Hey Offbeat Outlaw would the Oath of the Nuclear Paladin work in Balder's Gate. I know its alot less levels but I theorized that it could work out minus the rogue levels, so Fighter 5 Paladin 2 and Sorcerer 5 so you can get 2 feats but you could maybe get more damage with Fighter 5 Paladin 2 Rogue 3 and Sorcerer 2 for the thief rogue extra bonus action.
I dont remember what mission it is in act 3(something about saving a sister) but the gloves of soul catching is the reward for it. It's only 1d10 instead of 2 but it heals 10 hp each turn and will skyrocket your damage
I would like to add that there are gloves in Act 3 that gives 1d10 force to unarmed and astarion can get 1d10 necrotic to unarmed attacks. Add it to other bonuses and...
If the next build is something you already made it definitely either has warlock or fighter in it.
Loved it. Any paladin builds?
Oh n I'm running a sorcerer (dragon blood) rogue in DnD right now and it's nuts. Can't wait to try it in BG3
Also, at one part of act 3 you can get a pair of gloves that add 1d10 Force damage to your unarmed attacks to make the build even more crazy! xD
The other effect on that glove is also crazy. Gives free heal or free advantages.
Starting fighter or dipping ranger/ cleric for 1 level can get you heavy armor and shields too, only miss out on unarmored movement.
On a separate save (completely solo, wouldn't do this in multiplayer obvs) in my monk playthrough I was experimenting with cheats/mods (for monk I recommend the unlocked unarmed strike mod, just makes unarmed strikes a common action for everyone, although obviously monks get the most out of this) to see just how unbelievable the damage I could do was. With tavern brawler, those boots that add your wis modifier to damage, 30 str, 30 dex, 30 wis and various other bonuses; I was getting easily 120+ damage per flurry of blows. This paired with unarmored defense meant I had 30+ AC meaning I could destroy anything in 1 or 2 turns and be essentially unkillable to enemies. Of course, after this testing I reloaded back to my non-cheating save of the character, because with that level of power the game was so easy it wasn't fun.
Another build I've really had fun with was an oathbreaker sorcadin, 6 levels in paladin, 6 levels in draconic sorcerer. Tanky as hell and can deal out ridiculous damage from the high level smites, you can get up to 5th level smites with that combo of levels/classes. Man, the sound effect for a divine smite hitting is so good that it's made it difficult to leave this character and go to something else. RIP to my innocent looking but completely evil DUrge Sorcadin died doing what she loved, horrific acts of violence.
Keep in mind that every flurry of blows you can choose to make your enemy Dex save or knock your enemy prone, Str save or push them FIFTEEN FEET or daze your opponent (cant take reactions) with NO SAVE. This subclass is busted as hell 😂😂😂 glad monks finally get some spotlight
I loved my Monk 6, thief 3, fighter 2, berserker 1
Flawed Helldusk Gloves is the item you sre thinking of adds d4 Necrotic to unarmed strikes + some other stuff.
Then we also have gloves (or was it boots i cant recall) from the prism fight that can give your unarmed attacks additional wisdom mod to damage so with open hand passive and 20 wisdom (assuming for sacrificing whatever you would normally put it there for gloves/boots) you get the +5 from open hand passive +5 for the gloves/boots +8 with cloud giant potion str and +8 tavern brawler and now you are looking at 26 damage from just stat modifires as a nice little boost ontop of all those dice
so what im hearing is, run the whole team as only monks to lvl 6 then milti class in to other classes to give them each variety
What type of gestalt build would you suggest for maximum… fun? Always love your videos
Gestalt builds are not in BG3, did you mean multiclassing?
i feel kinda ahead of the curve here. I was talking to my friends just around when the game came out, and i said "this has to be a broken combo right?" but then we looked up best builds and stuff and i saw no one talking about it, so i figured "hey monks probably still bad for some reason i cant tell" and forgot about it, and now its starting to pop up.
anyway, great video as always i just felt validated
great video ! pardon my ignorance but does wisdom/dexterity add to damage , so you are not worried about strength stat ??
So we learned more bonus actions on monk is more fair...so give them 1 more at 6 and 12.
Possible quick tabletop patch?
I love you man. You're just nerdy Joel McHale
Im playing monk in tactician mode.. in act 3 when i got helm of grit.. it became 12 hit.. no boss survived this (plus that "t"cull the weak" spell, you become untouchable)
theres a glove in act3 that adds a 1d10 to unarmed attacks.
My Friends call this the Goku.
Well, take the legi gloves for 1d10dmg, the boots from the end of act 2 that add ur will mod to unarmed attacks, the headpiece from the baahl guy that lowers the crit roll by 1, the bow that lowers the crit roll by 1, the remaining 3 lvl in champion fighter for action surge and lowering the crit by 1 aaand the ring from moonrise tower with lets u make every attack with advantage but saving throws with disadvantage and u do easy 400dmg a round. The minmax potential of this game, monk especially is INSANE
My astarion is rocking this build
if you go to cutstom you can make custom hotkeys for abilities
Monk and Barb using a two handed weapon tavern brawler potions of haste the monk shoes and gloves gives you a mid 20 ac no armor resistance to most damage and insane dpr with out using up ki too much cause you can switch between Weapon and unarmed damage as needed
I agree that monks in the tabletop just simply struggle in terms of both damage and action economy. That's why whenever I've played a homebrew game with friends as a monk I always had to go on these insane quests and trials for our DM to have an NPC give my monk some kind of boon or at least a flat upgrade to my overall power to allow to contend with other higher lvl Players characters. In Bg3 I didn't have any of those problems and was just punching things left and right killing most fodder enemies in one or two turns and by the end I could reasonably handle most bosses with just my monk while letting my party members fight everyone else. The only thing I can thing of that would make the monk even more powerful in BG3 is if they had that old feature that allowed their unnarmed attack to reach out to twenty feet.
Also if you have advantage you get to add your sneak attack damage....to everything..
Ayo Offbeat, you’re forgetting one eeeeeeeeeeevil option Open Palm Monks have too: Flurry Of Blows Topple as your first hit. What’s that? You have Advantage on the next SEVEN ATTACKS??
Also, add three levels of Wildsoul Barbarian, go bear. That’s extra Rage damage on every attack, and, if anything survives your onslaught and fights back, you don’t care! Resistance to everything except Psychic damage!
Well, this solidifies which class I'm using for my first all-class playthrough. For anyone wondering, the rules are going to be that everyone has to start as the same class at first level (So Withers is the first stop), and by the end of the game, have to have at least six levels in that class (Because multiclassing is fun). And, as for multiclassing, everyone also has to end the game with a majority of levels in their beginner class, so if they multiclass, they can't end with a 6/6 split, it either has to be a minimum of 7 in the starting class if you only use one other class, or a minimum of 6 if you use more than one extra class. And, for variety, no-one can share the same class levels by the end.
See, I picked monk because I find them really fun in 5e. I had absolutely no idea how utterly terrifying I would become, especially when I found out that thief rogues get an extra bonus action. The way I like to set it up is to run up to someone, do a couple of flurries, use Wholeness of Body, use the extra bonus action to drink a potion of Speed, then use the extra action to whack 'em a few times with my staff. For the two turns after that, I've got ten attacks to absolutely maul people with. A few magic items added on to this made it absolutely brutal, even though I dropped strength and missed out on Tavern Brawler. They are: A staff that adds a d4 of thunder damage, the gloves that he mentioned, a pair of boots that let me add my wisdom modifier to my unarmed damage, and a set of robes that gave me permanent Cat's Grace and a +2 to my dex which allowed me to buff my wisdom with ASIs. BTW, with that robe and the rogue dip giving me expertise in Sleight of Hand, there is not lock or trap in the game that can stand up to me.
Basically, monks rock in BG3 and with a few magic items and a 3 level dip, they become absolute avatars of destruction. Good Night
He is back with more 130% bs builds. This is amazing
SO where's the build? I must have missed it.
Add in Spore Druid for extra necrotic damage maybe
another positive for this is that monks are wisdom and dex dependant + rogues get expertise so your "party face" can have persuasion expertise, wisdom bonuses etc. that makes you a great "skill monkey" while being a great fighter still.
I don't think this is too strong that the meta will now disincentivise the other classes for "normal players" but it is one of the stronger alternatives - possibly the strongest martial in terms of damage AND battlefield manipulation. yet there are Eldritch blast cannon builds that output similar damage, most spells being quickened is huge for 2 spells per turn etc. so I don't think this is game breaking but at 75% into the progression you are getting these ultra powerful and fun features that make you feel like a powerhouse.
Why does this have to be the way I find out about multiclassing???
I’m doing a monk Barb. I have 1 in barb and was going to get 5 in monk for the extra attack before going 1 or 2 back into barb for reckless attack and a subclass.
So should I wait for monk 6 before dipping back into barbarian?
alls im saying is i was sleeping on wizard before because sleep over witch bolt but damn is witchbolt good when its upcast
Tavern Brawler and add in item pieces to enhance unarmed and slam shit like a paladin.
Sooooo. . . What ate your thoughts for Way of the Shafow Monk? Sure. Not putting out as much damage. . .but ninjas
Not gunna lie i want the headphones he has
where can i find the first episodes of your baldur 3 playthrough ??
also a level 6 a wizard hasted before combat wet targets lightning bolt looking at 16d6 lightning damage in a 100 foot line plus spellcasting mod if your an evocation wizard and a cantrip or a level 2 witch bolt at 4d12 or a shocking grasp if they close for 4d8 max thats either 20 to 128 both crit for max at 266for one target thats not counting everything else in the way taking about 200 max
Shout out to d4: D&D Deep Dive for covering a similar build in his original bg3 multi-class video. Love all your content too😂
Hey, I heard there was an Artificer Mod for BG3 out there... can you tell us if it is any good?
Heeeeey this is just mildly off-topic but since you mentioned it in the video and have much more D&D experience than I do... Does Cunning Action actually serve as a second (but more restricted) bonus action per turn for rogues? I've been having this discussion with my current party and we can't seem to reach an agreement because of how badly worded it is in 5e PHB.
Cunning action does not grant a second bonus action in 5e. The thief class does give you an additional bonus action but ONLY to use cunning action on.
@@OffbeatOutlawGot it! Thanks!
Btw, how would you compare the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength comboed with Tavern Brawler to this already impressive build? I feel like it potentially could deal even more damage since it doesn't rely on dice rolls and just adds a flat +12 to each unarmed strike?
If you want a challenge make eagle heart work
Do you have recommended starting stats for this build?
Can you do an Oathbreaker Paladin multiclass build but make it viable
Make this build stronger with 2 levels in fighter and its GGs all round
B please hotkey flurry of blows so you can spam it
You can get lvl 5 before the end of act 1 XD I've done it, not even an hour ago I reached lvl 5, and I expect to reach lvl 6 hopefully before Act 2.
The build requires level 6 monk and 3 thief.
So do you recommend being a dex attacker or a strength attacker? Using a quater staff or just bare fists? I need details!!!!!
Monks can use dex for quarter staffs and fists, dex helps with initiative and ac, go dex
@@OffbeatOutlaw gotta. Thanks
So do you just ignore sneak attack with this build? I can imagine Karlach is right there beside you, but you need weapons to prock SA, which prevents your wholenesses from helping. So which is better?
I ignore sneak attack as it would only add a single d6 once a turn whereas wholeness adds 1d4+wisdom every hit
Once any character hits level 10 in any DnD campaign. You are ridiculous lol.
way am i not surprice dat you made monk even more broken?
your volume is lower than is should be. Turn it up.
all good but how do you pass your charisma checks at the beginning
Why persuade people to open doors when I can simply kill them
Add an eelixer of hill giant strength and tavern brawler
You then just need 2 lvls in fighter for action surge
This would be awesome if you actually showed what you were talking about on screen and what stats you had set
were is the build?!
I agree
Potion of hill giant strength makes you strength 21 so your modifier a 5 not 4
Can you combo the unarmored defense of barbarian and monk for absurd ac in the game?
No, it's in the tool tip I think. The highest one takes effect
@@TemporalMeteor that's sucks makes sense though
Add fighter levels and now your dealing 16 hits in a turn have fun.
