I'm sure most of them get the satire. But they roleplay the guys who don't get it to try making the thing their own as they support the subjet of the satire. Which is even more frightening as they understand the satire, they understand this is terrible, but they still think its better this way and/or what humanity needs to be as a civilisation.
I really think most of those far right enjoyers tries to convice themselves its not satire as it would be a wet dream for them without the satirical tone.
Its the exact same weirdos that takes 40k seriously and don't want to admit its satire and pure dystopia.
Screaming at the top of your lungs "For the imperium" or "Burn the Xenos" is fun as long as you know and admit its terribly bad and should never happen. When you really mean it... Its cringe and its time for you to see your democracy officer...

The best satire is almost always inevitably also a really good piece of media about the topic. Helldivers IS an extremely hilarious, over the top piece of military sci fi…..
That IS the best example of military sci fi gaming in YEARS.
People latching onto that latter half sometimes get really attached to that, and don’t want to be the butt of the joke. I almost understand that. I’d have loved a played straight Halo version of this….
But holy shit this game absolutely slaps and I want nothing more then to play it constantly and spread managed democracy! I don’t even care if it’s poking fun at the genre. I even love that part, as it justifies all the monumental amount of team-killing and egregious casualties.
It’s funny, cause I know mostly WOT veterans who play, and ironically they seem to get that message better than anyone. Mind, they aren’t AMERICAN veterans of the WOT, so perhaps less defensive of their role in it.
Their cynicism over the whole affair lets them see the parallels clearly and laugh even harder at it. Doesn’t speak for all of them of course but it was an interesting observation.

the aspect of satire i emphasize is that someone has to miss the joke. the result of good satire is to inoculate less gullible people from the folly of more gullible people.
It's like saying "i want you to think about this before you commit", but instead of telling you, satire DOES the thing.
If you don't get it, you're the subject of satire. And if you want it to stop, you better start getting it

God every time i see twitter i have to remind myself that it's just a microcosm of idiots screaming at eachother where somehow even the people that are right are stupid.
Like for example in this very situation there where:
1.The initial group of people that didn't get the satire.
2.The group of people that just assumed that the game's ENTIRE community was incapable of comprehending satire, even though most people that match the game's tone for the joke are just as blatant as the game itself.
And to be perfectly honest group 2 baffles me more just bacause they somehow got the game's satire but then proceeded to not get the exact same satire somehow.
And somehow there's like 7 different ghost groups that those two groups think they're fighting.
To be honest I'd rather have all my human interactions on the fucking pornhub comment section than whatever this cold war politics simulation is.

Like yeah most disney content is bad recently.... But its just bad. Woke content or not. Its bad. Like we had very right oriented movies back in the day... But it was bad because of poor writting or uninteresting characters... Not the political undertone....
The funniest thing lately was Arcane. Everyone enjoyed the show. Everyone praised it. None of this clowns called it "woke".... And yet.... This is one of the most ""woke"" show we had these last couple of years. Left values, imperialism critisism and inclusivity is litterally everywhere. XD

There’s been a lot of people lately complaining about people “bringing real world politics into fiction” during discussions, as if that’s a bad thing that only started happening a year ago or something. But we’ve been using allegory and reappropriating stories to explain our own narratives since storytelling existed.
I think the people who don’t get it have been convinced by someone else that there is no value in that sort of analysis, so they just ignore all of the anti imperialism and shit like that.
I literally saw someone talk about how it was a travesty that the militaristic protagonists are always bad in the end, and how they wish the bugs and robots could just be evil and that’s it. But to me, the point of the game is that there’s no such nothing as a good military guy fighting a righteous fight.

Here is an absurd power build my friend and I came up with and I thought you would find int interesting.
    Build
With this build I plan to achieve the most possible average damage from one character with one turn of setup for Spirit Shroud. Then a supernova round of damage. All of the ability scores will be at the pre requisite amount to multiclass. I will walk you through the thought process, turn progression, class levels, feats and ASI’s, along with the damage calculations. This build needs to be going first in combat with a surprise round.
This is a level 20 character build and I will be using the Point by Method for ability scores. The background does not matter. I chose criminal/spy for flavor. This build does not take any equipment into account for any part of my calculations. This is all natural.
The original ability scores are as follows. 8,14,12,15,10,13
For the race I chose +2 in DEX and +1 in INT.
    My new scores are 8,16,12,16,10,13
There will be one ASI that increases my INT by +2. This will bring my finale total to
    8,16,12,18,10,13
    Race
Bugbear from Monsters of the Multiverse for its racial ability. Surprise Attack If you hit a creature with an attack roll, the creature takes an extra 2d6 damage if it hasn’t taken a turn yet in the current combat.
This does not specify once per turn or for weapon attacks only.
    Also for free stealth proficiency.
    Classes
This will be a five multiclass build.
1: eight levels in Sorcerer. Subclass will be Storm.
The metamagic options are Subtle and Transmute.
The two ASI’s are metamagic Adept, and Alert. The two metamagic options I chose are Quickened and Empowered. Proficiencies pick your favorites.
I chose this subclass for its level 6 ability Heart of the Storm. Whenever you start casting a spell of 1st level or higher that deals lightning or thunder damage, stormy magic erupts from you. This eruption causes creatures of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of you to take lightning or thunder damage (choose each time this ability activates) equal to half your sorcerer level. To deal extra free damage to a nearby enemy.
2: Two levels in Fighter. This really needs no explanation for Action Surge. For the fighting style I chose Blind Fighting.
3: Three levels in Rogue. Subclass assassin for Advantage on all my attacks and auto crits.
For proficiency, pick your favorite. For expertise I used one on stealth, pick your favorite for the last one.
4: One level in Warlock. Subclass the Great Old One for flavor. I need Eldritch Blast
Eldritch Blast: A beam of crackling energy streaks toward a creature. Make a ranged spell attack. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 force damage. The spell creates more than one beam when you reach higher levels: two beams at 5th level, three beams at 11th level, and four beams at 17th level.
5: Six levels of Wizard. Subclass is War for Tactical Wit, Power Surge, Spirit Shroud, and Scorching Ray. The ASI was +2 to INT.
Tactical Wit: Starting at 2nd level, your keen ability to assess tactical situations allows you to act quickly in battle. You can give yourself a bonus to your initiative rolls equal to your Intelligence modifier.
Power Surge: Starting at 6th level, you can store magical energy within yourself to later empower your damaging spells. In its stored form, this energy is called a power surge.
You can store a maximum number of power surges equal to your Intelligence modifier.
Once per turn when you deal damage to a creature or object with a wizard spell, you can spend one power surge to deal extra force damage to that target. The extra damage equals half your wizard level.
Spirit Shroud: Until the spell ends, any attack you make deals 1d8 extra damage when you hit a creature within 10 feet of you. This damage is radiant, necrotic, or cold (your choice when you cast the spell). Any creature that takes this damage can’t regain hit points until the start of your next turn. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for every two slot levels above 3rd.
Scorching Ray: You create three rays of fire and hurl them at targets. You can hurl them at one target or several. Make a ranged spell attack for each ray. On a hit, the target takes 2d6 fire damage. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you create one additional ray for each slot level above 2nd.
These spells “Eldritch Blast, Scorching Ray, and Spirit Shrouds” are the only ones needed for this combo. Pick your favorites for the rest of them.
    Combo
With the classes I took you will have one 7th level spell slot available at the highest.
    The combo looks like this
Turn/Step One: Get behind cover use the metamagic option Subtle to cast Spirit Shroud at 7th level.
Turn/Step Two: Use your +15 sneak skill to move within two enemies 10ft away from you. To cause a surprise round.
Step Three: Use the metamagic options Subtle and Transmute to cast Scorching Ray at 6th level.
Step Four: Use the ability Action Surge to do the last step except cast Scorching Ray at 5th level instead.
Step Five: Use the metamagic option Quickened Spell and Subtle to cast Eldritch Blast as a bonus action.
Step Six: The thing is dead and their friend has a bunch of damage to it as well.
I will assume every attack lands.
    Explanation with Calculations
This build will be making an absurd amount of attacks. All at advantage with a +10 to hit. This will hit a 20AC on average.
    Scorching Ray at 6th level= 7atks
    Scorching Ray at 5th level= 6atks
    Eldritch Blast= 4atks
For a grand total of 17atks
Each of the scorching ray attacks are 2d6 by themselves. There are 13 attacks in total. This brings our damage total to 26d6.
Let’s not forget about our bugbear racial ability for an additional 2d6 per attack. That is another 26d6
Eldritch Blast is 1d10 +2d6 per attack with the bugbear ability. For a total of 4d10+8d6
Lastly, Spirit Shroud at 7th level adds 3d8 to every attack we’ve just made. There are 17 attacks in total.
This gives us a total of 51d8s
So far the total of dice is 60d6+4d10+51d8
We aren't done yet. Lets not forget that this is a surprise round for the rogue assassinate ability so everything is a crit. This means we double the amount of dice being rolled. That will bring our new total to
    120d6+8d10+102d8
I will take the average of each dice type and add them up together.
    120d6=360
    8d10=40
    102d8= 408
    360+40+408= 808 average damage.
This does not include the 2 remaining sorcery points for Empowered spell, or the power surge ability. These will provide additional damage yes but this is the bulk of the damage. The sorcerer level 6 ability will do 13x4=52 damage to the enemies friend for tranmusting scorching ray into lightning or thunder.
This is also a surprise round so the enemy won't get a turn so you still have the first turn of combat to add more damage to this. I would assume with a +12 to your initiative you will be going first if not pretty close to it.
Initiative Score= DEX mod +3 plus Alert feat +5 plus Tactical Wit +4.

At this point, I feel like we as a society should just give up on satire as a concept. Make fun of a genre of media, and it becomes regarded as the best in the genre (Watchmen). Make fun of a group of people, and it becomes that group's fave media (Fight Club). Make fun of an ideology, and it become propaganda supporting it (Helldivers 2). The concept very clearly isn't working!

I think many people have to fall under the box of, "I know its satire and I don't care, nor do I agree with it" which I just think builds to the hypocrisy of their own beliefs, when push comes to shove they don't actually stand by their beliefs as long as they are having a good time. They don't actually care about political issues, they just want things to stay the same because change is annoying or inconvenient. It's incredibly frustrating, especially as any sort of minority where politics is unavoidable as part of your life, to have these people who get to pick and choose, comment confidently and smugly on an issue they half understand and make jokes at its expense, because they genuinely do not understand the stakes, because it will never, ever actually effect them.

Great video. However, my one critique is that imperialism is not an exclusively right wing belief and I think you will miss some of the allegory if you assume it is only making critiques of the right.
Obviously, right wingers will often hold imperialist views and, by making fun of imperialism, it will certainly make fun of the right, but my only point is that imperialist views do certainly exist on the left as well. You gave the example of the Ministry of Truth concept, which is a broader allegory today but was originally written about in the context of the Soviet Union.
We can certainly discuss other historical examples and, while anti-war views have certainly been a part of left wing politics in US, applying this lens is much more difficult outside the US.

    • @OffbeatOutlaw

After watching the video again and reading the comments, I think something that you did touch on a bit but needs more discussion is the issue of recognizing what is being satirized. I have seen it said here and elsewhere that the game is satirizing conservatism, imperialism, facism, libertarianism, the USA, human nature, and communism.
It can be difficult to understand the point of the satire on a surface level when some of these ideas are contradictory to others. This also goes back to your video on media literacy and how people should be able to interpret media in different ways. It seems almost everybody agrees the game is over-the-top satire but the disagreement is what it is making fun of

  • @westernwarhorse
    @westernwarhorse 6 месяцев назад +1

Importantly, categorizing something as satire depends on authorial intent. Many of the elements people often equate with satire can also be elements of farce and parody. The only real difference often is just the intent of the work. A farcical depiction could be *taken* as satirical by those who think the intent is ridicule yet enjoyed straight by people who enjoy the thing itself, even in light of comedic elements.
For example, if someone is extremely patriotic, they could enjoy a farcical depiction of patriotism, both for the patriotic depiction itself as well as the comedic elements found within the exaggeration. Similarly, a person who hates patriotism could enjoy the same work by reading the intent of the humor as being targeted and malicious. The flipside of this would be Stephen Colbert in his original incarnation. He intended his character as satire, but the targets of the satire could enjoy him by simply assuming his intent was exaggeration, not malice.
This is why it is so irksome to see people crying about being "media literate" and claiming that people who "don't get it" are just idiots. Again, the line between satire, farce, and parody can rely heavily on authorial intent, and whether or not the author successfully conveys their intent to the audience is their problem, not the audience's. You will even see people say that they think successful satire should be misunderstood, which entirely misses the point of satire. The author is trying to make a point to convince the audience, not to just entertain people who already agree with the underlying point. A satire that most people do not recognize as satire is bad satire. It has failed to actually do the one thing it is intended to do... to expose and criticize a thing so the audience sees it as bad.
Satire is not meant to just be preaching to the choir. Horatian, Juvenalian, Menippean... regardless of the target or variety, satire has an actual purpose, and it isn't just to maliciously make fun of the plebes so your audience of media literate intellectuals can have a sensible chuckle over avocado toast while patting themselves on the back.
Here's a good rule of thumb. If the thing you think is being satirized is never actually shown to be wrong, you are likely not consuming satire, at least not good satire. Exaggerated comedic effect does not a satire make. The thing needs to actually be exposed and criticized within the work itself. If you are just laughing because *you* think the thing is stupid, you are likely misreading it as satirical. Satire seeks to actually expose and criticize, not merely be an exaggerated form of the thing, which would be farce or parody instead, both of which need not be malicious.

To be clear to anyone hearing him say "He's qualified" is incorrect anyone can be qualified to discuss something and present a talking point about it if they read the available material on. You do not need a "Degree" from a specific place to be qualified to discuss this kind of stuff. I really hope he doesn't develop an ego, and tell someone they cannot talk about a point if they lack a degree on it. That's an argument from "Authority" and in any debate is considered absolutely useless. We can all have an "opinion" on these subjects if we read the material or study associated to them. Please PLEASE my man do not keep saying your degree in so many videos over and over as a qualification. Professionals do not do that as they always discuss things based on there experience in the field of study. Never there degrees.

You can have an opinion, and when there's an objective reading of the material then unless you concur with that objective reading you no longer have an opinion you just have a wrong and an incorrect and should be told to either educate yourself or shut up since you know nothing about what you're talking about.
You can have an opinion that mental health therapy does nothing to improve the quality of the mental health that one experiences, and that opinion only shows anti-intellectualism as it's objective knowledge that it does.
Also, your statement of, "Professionals do not do that as they always discuss things based on there experience in the field of study." Is pathetically incorrect as those are ANECDOTAL DATA and only relevant to that one person the anecdotal data is collected from. Anecdotal data as evidential value has a value of four out of four when it comes to the validity of evidence to show anything.
Remember what I said earlier? Now shut up and go educate yourself as your opinion is both wrong and incorrect.

A representation of my field of study. “I hope he doesn’t get an ego over this” I got my degree 4 fucking years ago, I had my ego way before that. “It’s considered an argument from authority”, when do I do this? When do I say other people can’t speak on these issues? When? Do I shut people down based on their lack of degree in this video? No I dont. You literally just made up a point to get worried over.
My degree was my experience. What do you think a degree is? I had to spend 4 years studying and analyzing theatrical works, movies, plays and books, performances, RUclips videos, video games and write consistently high quality papers on each of these topics that consider the modern publishing and papers. I spent literal years learning about media, narrative, and performance. When I mention my degree it’s to inform an audience where I’m getting my info from.

Democracy is the political system where citizens vote for the policies they want. This can take the form of representative democracies like in the US and Canada where citizens vote for politicians who will represent them in political discussions. There are also direct democracies where citizens vote for things themselves directly etc.
democracy is just “the citizens vote for things they want”. It’s a very useful political system and is where a lot of American values come from. The right to free speech is the guiding principle of democracy. The ability to voice your opinion without retaliation from the government.
