@@shanewilson7994 What I’m doing currently on my playthrough, I used the elixirs for strength and the gloves of dexterity for dex. Having both str and dex at 8, I was able to put a good chunk of points on charisma.
What sometimes makes it hard for new players, is that when you say “whatever fits your place style”, will be hard to determine since you’re a new player.
My monk is a half-orc, has racial ability that when downed they get back up with 1 HP. I am triple-classing Monk, Fighter , and Rogue. Put first two levels into Fighter so that I am proficient with all 3 armor classes, shields, a bunch of weapons the Monk doesn't have natural proficiency with and at level 2 you unlock action surge that grants a second round of attacks once per short rest. Then put levels 3-8 in Monk taking Tavern Brawler as feat at Monk level 4 (level 6 for me). Then 4 levels into Rogue taking Thief as sub-class at level 3 of Rogue (level 11 for me) for the extra bonus action and earn a Rogue feat at level 12 which I plan to use on Ability Improvement.
I've been considering doing a Monk playthrough but haven't taken the plunge yet. This video will certainly be of help when I decide to. Thank you so much for putting this up! :)
1) (*GIANT*) halfling has lucky *OR* gnome has int/wis/cha saving throw advantage (something to consider after reading the rest) 2) stat creation 8 17 15 8 16 8 or 12 16 14 8 16 8 and respec when you get gloves of dex. 3) gear (final) Hill giant gauntlet, amulet of greater health, graceful cloth, circlet of int, boots uninhibited kushigo(or orange snare boots) and respec for 8 17 8 8 16 15 (use hag, mirror, Volo surgery, 2x ability improvement, book of thay for 6 summons) => 23 20 23 17 20 18 stats in 3rd chapter. (Legendary trident/bow for ranged foes, fists in melee) and choose a set of rings 4) open hand (8), thief for 4 levels, OR OPEN HAND 4, THIEF 4, BM/CHAMP 4 (action surge/archery), both paths give 3 feats, bonus action/sneak atk, and tavern brawler ((bm)=>3 maneuvers: Disarm, menacing, trip or (champ)=>improved crit (10% instead of 5%)) Best set-up for solo (non-multi player character) playthrough with a good (Lae'zel, (Shadowheart or Halsin) Wyll) or an evil ((Lae'zel or Minthara) Shadowheart, Astarion) party (paladin & bard, cleric & druid, sorcerer & warlock) synergy. Sorry but Gale, Karlach, Minsc & Jaheira (are found late game) are trash imo. (headaches!)
I ran a halfling monk and it was amazing. The movement penalty was only noticed at the first 6 or so levels. After that anymore wasn't needed because of the amount of ki points and step of the wind. Plus the luck feature from halfling made my monk feel great for resisting spells/effects. Never had to worry about a nat 1. Can't recommend enough. Overall, love the vid. Especially the "This is your character not mine, do what you like"
I had thought about going with a Deep Gnome monk when I get out of EA. The Deep Gnomes have Gnome Cunning which gives them a lot of proficiencies for saves and, with those given for monk, all of them except CON is covered. I have considered the Halfling, too for luck.

Since i found the Speedy Light Feet ive wanted to make a lightning charge build and im about to make a monk based on them and the other gear like the sparky gloves with a monk and the the Moderate armor feat the use the boots gloves and other gear and im very excited to try it out
My first playthrough was a simple fighter with swords and shields. Since it is during a midieval type of time period I thought being a sword fighter make sense to me. Now I am going to choose monk and create a Bruce Lee style martial artist that will kick ass and take names.
I'm on a Mac, so am still stuck in EA. I am really excited to try the new 5e monk in BG3 as I played monks a lot in BG1, BG2, and the old expansions. I'm trying to balance the idea of multi-classing with either Rogue/Thief or Fighter/Champion for the extra attacks. That said, I'd love to learn how to get more early-game gear, meaning early in Act I; some of the "early" gear you mentioned is into or late in Act II.
Yeah, no I completely get that, the only actual "early" piece of gear I mentioned was Nature's Snare. This may be incorrect, but I think the reason I focused more on the mid to late game gear is because I didn't feel like there was a lot of transformative gear in Act 1. Like there was stuff in Act 1 that was good, but nothing that, to me, stood out as something that really elevated one class over every other. That being said, I do think I could make a video just highlighting magic items from Act 1 and who they may or may not benefit, would be more of a catchall video rather than class specific. Would that be helpful? I appreciate the feedback!
I also enjoy that if you want to super role play as Aang, you can turn on non-lethal damage so that your monk never kills someone....even though Aang totally kills people in ATLA.

i loved using flurry of blows to knock the matriarch spider into the chasm for pest control achievement

Forest Gnome is my preferred race. The saving throws, as you wrote, is pretty handy.

Gith is my go to race for the jump and misty step the race gets onto of the ancestral knowledge that gives you proficiency in anything you choose.

you can also get a ring in the goblin stronghold that gives you +3m of movement speed basically negating the lower movement of the small races
My favorite movement ability comes from using Fly in the Illithid powers.

I made a crew of short monks. Movement was compromised yes, but watching them throw and kick is worth it.

My dwarf monk is awesome. Extra hp is great, and I’m a dwarf…diggy diggy hole! The minor loss of move speed is moot, you get a crap ton of move speed.

Being able to be the Avatar is a strong argument for this class.
