    Very helpful video thanks! I had a Unifi Video NVR on an old PC and my new Synology NAS is replacing it. Unifi Video as a product/service is basically dead. I had terrible trouble getting my Bullet G3 camera to talk to surveillance station. A reset of the camera resolved it though and all is working now. Anyone else migrating their cameras from another system. Reset your camera settings. Don't be like me and spend hours wondering why it's not working. Anyway Surveillance Station sure seems pretty impressive to me!

    Thank you for this great video. Can we connect 2 cameras to a NAS with one of these being remote from the NAS? For example, my NAS is in my office and i want to install one camera to my office and another camera at home. Is that possible at all?

    I've recently been going through all the Synology video's again as I decided to look to an alternative to running a computer 24/7 for another product. The Synology interface is still a little antiquated compared to the one I had been using, but it is perfectly usable. It will be good if Synology combine timeline into the live view. The big thing here though is energy saving. As I run the NAS anyway, shutting off the computer will be a but energy saving and the Synology is a good option.
    I tried an external Dahua NVR, but it couldn't do everything I wanted, one of the big things was recording low res 24/7 and switching to high res on an alert. Synology can do that.

    Nic video.
    We had the Synology rs3614xs+ but it got damaged due to liquid intrusion early this year.
    Which device would you recommend. Something with similar features would be great. Thanks.

    great overview! on say a synology 920+ 24/7 does surveillance transcoding take its toll on the life of your nas?

    Does Surveillance Station effect the overall speed of the system, for say Windows SMB and for Plex? Would running 4x cameras at 8MP at 20FPS slow it down? That's one thing I'm trying to understand, one side of me says to get the NAS to do it, the other side says it will slow the system down and then the HDDs are spinning 24/7, rather than just a dedicated NVR drive spinning and the NAS can sit quietly until needed for file sharing/plex/kodi.

      I know this is a few months old, but noticed you were not answered.
      The answer to your question - It depends on your NAS configuration. If you are running it on a lower spec NAS with a low power CPU and low RAM, then yes. Using even 1 camera will affect the speed of LAN transfers whether SMB or other. Lower spec NAS devices also will struggle with Plex and likely not give you performance you want if you are looking at 4K transcoding.
      If you have a higher power NAS, with an Intel CPU and higher RAM, then the effect of 4 cameras on SMB will not be noticeable. Even these will struggle with high resolution transcoding though. A NAS will never replace a full PC for transcoding

    Do you have to pay to have lets say 10 cameras? Is the license only for 2 with the NAS?

    • @5938-g1o
      @5938-g1o 3 года назад

      YesSiree! This is where SYNOLOGY gets you! It does supply 2 camera licences out of the box, but you have to buy camera licence packs. Either 1,4 or 8 camera packs. QNAP on the other hand usually come with more licences...don’t quote me on this one but check QNAP’s lineup. The good thing Is that the licences are transferable from one NAS to another in case you upgrade NASes so one can think of this as paying for a certain number of cameras FOREVER! (As long as you stay with SYNOLOGY)

      @@5938-g1o wow, I didn’t know that. I read that they can support up to 20 cameras, then I heard a little about licenses, but not that they cost so much and you only get 2. May as well just buy a camera pack and NVR.

    What was the reolink camera you used? The Argus 3 in it's FAQ say it's not supported, so I am assuming it wasn't that :)
    Looking for an external camera with WIFI, battery powered with local storage.
    Thank you for the video, btw.

    Very useful video. I want to add cameras at my home. However, I do not want to scrub through hours of video to find events. Looks like I can do this with surveillance station. Any suggestions on which NAS to get for a 4 camera setup. I will be using 4k cameras connected to ethernet. The NAS will be dedicated to surveillance.

    Thanks for good instruction. I have some questions.
    Can we connect Surveillance Station from out side like Quick Connect?
    If we can, how to setup it?
    Thank you so much,

    Question: Looking for PTZ Outdoor IP Camera for Synology use. Only ask was Human/Vehicle ID and Pan, Tilt, Zoom. What camera would be best or most compatible. Cost isnt really an issue. I've look on Synology site for compatibility and ....no thanks. That site needs some serious work to be useful.

    I do not have internet at my house and instead Hotspot my desktop computer from my mobile. Can these cameras be installed and used with this set up? I know I will not be able to remotely view the video.

    Thanks for sharing, Can we add (4g Cameras that uses sim card) to synology ? so we can record directly on synology even if the cameras and NAS not on the same network.

    • @Tigerskunk
      @Tigerskunk 3 года назад +1

      What i know on what I have read and seen with my cameras, the cameras and NAS have to be on the same network. Like all have to be on same ip range such as 192.168.1.x . It may work over a VPN if the server is set to bridge the connection.
      For the couple of Reolink cameras I have say that depending on model, they will record to the sim and NAS surveillance software at same time while other cameras will only record to the sim when no NAS is found or to the NAS only when it connects to the surveillance software.

    Good vid but You keep saying there are lots of things you can do but don't say how to do them, You say you can stream an area on a camera as a separate stream, but didn't say how to do it, I would like to know how to do it?

    • @nascompares

      only if it is ONVIF tbh and alot of these affordable cameras (that is just a light observation, I know their range is quite large) do not feature ONVIF in favour of in-house/on-board software for phones etc
