    Of all the companies in the industry of network-attached storage, few are as secretive as Synology. Whether you are an in the industry of network appliances and storage, the in-house IT guy, or a professional consumer (prosumer) who is just in the market for a new piece of kit, finding out information on the latest hardware and software releases from Synology NAS can often be rather difficult. I have been covering pretty much any and all new releases from Synology NAS for a few years now and although they are always rather secretive at the best of times, things are especially oblique in this latest generation of 2020 and 2021 range. There are lots of reasons for this, ranging from their brand's own elusive reputation to share information till the last moment, to the impact of natural disasters in the east and world spreads of Convid-19 having an impact on manufacturers as they either preemptively close/lower staff numbers, or are in areas of a large impact. So, today I wanted to run down everything we know about the software and hardware that we know is coming for 2020/2021 in the Synology portfolio, as well as update as much as I can as time goes on.

    The discussion of static IP in this video shows editing the default gateway IP which is already and always static. Assuming a simple home network, this is the IP address on the router for access to the Internet. The default value is almost always correct for a home network and should never be changed.
    Assuming that you meant to show how to set a static IP for the NAS (there are pros and cons to this), in the same Network section of the control panel:
    1. Click the "Network Interface" tab.
    2. Click the LAN 1 interface (assuming that's what you're cabled to. It will show "Connected")
    3. Click the "Edit" button.
    4. Select "Use manual configuration"
    5. Change the IP address to one not being used on your local network (You can check this on your router)
    6. Click "OK"

    Really great and thorough video but I encountered some issues with Shared Folders and thought I would share the solution since I've managed to fix it.
    To those who might have had issues with the shared folder not showing up in Windows and displaying "Location is not available" check that SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is enabled on your Windows PC.
    Here are some instructions I found courtesy of Kate Li (MSFT) on Microsoft's TechNet forum
    Let's first check the SMB settings in NAS, if it was configured SMB 1.0 as default, please configure the same version of SMB to fix this issue:
    1. Run PowerShell as Administrator
    2. Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature 1
    Answer Y when prompted to confirm the modification.
    3. Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters" RequireSecureNegotiate -Value 0 -Force
    4. Control Panel / Programs and Features / Turn Windows Features On or Off and make sure SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is ticked
    If this issue still persists, Please Reinstall and reset TCP/IP to check this issue.
    1) Click on the Start button
    2) Search for CMD
    3) Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type netsh int ip reset c:
    esetlog.txt in the Command Prompt window, and press the Enter key.
    5) Type winsock reset in the Command Prompt window, and then press the Enter key.
    6) Restart the computer.
    Hope this helps someone who needs it.

Bring new to Synology and finding this 9 part series on the the DS1019+. Pretty excited to go through them. My question is, is there anything not included in these videos that would apply to the 1621+, or is it the same? Thanks very much! 👍🏻👍🏻

    For a Static IP, at 20:46, you are clicking on the wrong place. Go to the Network Interface tab at the top of the screen, click on your LAN connection ( likely LAN1), Edit, Use Manual Configuration.

    For consumers btrfs and SHR is the best choice for its flexibility and extra features. For business it is probably still the best choice although business tend to be more cautious so may use ext and RAID because of it longer history of reliability although I do think this is been too careful as both technologies have been around long enough to prove their worth stability and suitability.

    Can anyone tell me how much time will it take approximately for building/creating volume in raid-5 in Synology 920+ with four 4TB IronWolf NAS Drives giving approximately 10.4TB usable space?

  • @derekca
    @derekca 4 года назад

    HI, this was good, especially when you touched on the idea of creating separate volumes for BackUP, Media and SurveillanceCAMs. That's what I want to do. In Storage Manager I currently only see one volume, aptly called Volume 1. However, the "Create", radio button is greyed out. If I wanted to create the 3 mount points [volumes/folders?] I just described, would I have to create 3 volumes or go into Control Panel, Shared Folder and create 3 shares, named accordingly? [I can't currently create any volumes as I said the "create" in Storage Manager is greyed out.

      I just got my NAS, and after setting up have the same issue, did you find a solution? I never meant to create the volume in the first place, it seems it created it automatically when it was setting up. I want to choose a different RAID config, but it won't let me delete "Volume 1" because it seems that the DSM is installed on the volume somehow, so I can't rebuild it? TIA

    Many of the setup videos I've viewed always seem to go with the default bad sectors of 50, but I'm unclear what that means. Is that a percentage of the hard drive? if not could you elaborate how many bad sectors I could choose if I wanted to change the default. How many sectors are there on a disk drive and does that vary with the size of disk drive I install?

    • @wildonemeister
      @wildonemeister 2 года назад

      That greatly depends on what kind of RAID (or not) configuration you choose, and also how many drives you have - or will have in the future. Your second question I don't understand.

    Hi! Do you have any answers to this? I was setting up my Synology for the first time. I only have two drive slots and both are 4TB. I noticed after setting up, one drive is "initialized" and the other drive is "not initialized." When creating storage pool and volume, I can only create on the "initialized" drive and I cannot create on the "not initialized" drive. Do you know how can I get this drive to get initialized? Any answer would appreciate. Thank you.

    This thing's driving me bloody nuts. Did the basic set-up, it automatically used my 2 6TB drives to make me a 2-disk 6TB RAID with SHR. Fine. But I want to partition it into 2 (a 4TB backup drive for time machine backups, and one 2TB for media). Can I do it? No. Trying to delete the volume so I can create 2 new ones won't work because the current one is in use and I've seemingly got to stop, or uninstall loads of packages/processes that I don't know what they do in the first place. All I want is a bloody RAID-secured 2-partition drive with a gigabit ethernet port. Why does this have to be so bloody complex. :(

    • @Piplodocus
      @Piplodocus 3 года назад

      Did it in the end. Just took a lot of disabling/uninstalling.

    • @CobraDove1111
      @CobraDove1111 3 года назад

      @@Piplodocus how did you do it because Im stuck on when I set it up, it automatically set up a SHR which is fine, I have two 4T drives I want in a one disk redundancy....but all the videos show people setting this up manually....I dont know if the auto setup is correct, I dont know if I should, or even can scrap that one and do it again manually

    • @Piplodocus
      @Piplodocus 3 года назад

      @@CobraDove1111 I had to disable and/or uninstall all the many NAS apps (like media servers and stuff that it auto-configured on its auto-set-up routing) that seemed to be using it, then finally I could re-partition and set the drives up how I wanted. It was all unavailable and I couldn't change anything drive-related when all the apps were using the disk (and I didn't really have any use for the apps anyway - it's a RAID backup drive in one partition, and spare network storage in the other). Basically I just wanna use the thing as a big RAIDed 2-partition HDD with Ethernet I/O. It tried to be too clever and decide it wanted to be a media server and stuff I had to get rid of and turn off.

    The word "Volumes IP" was not used correctly in this video. The video vaguely shows you how to setup the IP address of the NAS. Volume IP implies the volumes themselves have a unique IPs over the network. This is a feature of SANS which is a more advanced network storage technology. If you want more thorough tutorials on setting up the Synology, you should go to this channel. That channel has 37 videos on setting up the Synology NAS! The series is still ongoing so you know you get the latest info as well.

    When you talk about setting a static IP address, why are you on the General Tab and clicking on the default gateway and telling people to set the static IP address there? You should be on the Network Interface Tab, select the LAN adaptor in use, click Edit and change settings to 'Use Manual Configuration' and then you setup the static IP address, subnet mask and gateway addresses. You just lowered my confidence in you.

    Bloody hell you waffle. The constantly moving mouse, and the waffling are a hindrance to staying focused and following instructions. As a new user I had enormous difficulty following your instructions especially after watching the Synology series. They were calm and methodical with time to absorb the instructions and follow the clearly marked and enlarged mouse icon. I was forced here because they completely neglected to mention configuration of the storage pool. I will be going back there as soon as I grasp what you are trying to explain. I think I will have to replay this video a few times before it sinks in
