Damn dude, every mario kart is worth playing. We all grew up with the franchise. All games are good. Yes the old ones are dated especially the original 3 but remember those games came out over the last 28 years. They're old but still amazing. All games are amazing.

2:44 That's really only a problem if you're counter-steering for too long in a drift, like if you're drifting a right turn and you hold the joystick left to go wide, you'll skid and lose speed after a few seconds. But if you hold right or neutral stick, or hold left and briefly flick right and back left again like when you're building a mini turbo, then it won't cause you to skid out.

    • @HinkHall
      @HinkHall Месяц назад +2

I didn’t even know it was a mechanic because like you said flicking vs holding and I always just flicked the stick around to hold my turning radius and have no recollection of spinning out

Yeah also classic game manuals were something interesting. The Super Mario RPG manual would have Luigi for an instance popping in often saying tips or advice. It's nice to see Luigi get more characterization for Super Mario RPG since we really don't see much mention of him in the actual game outside of a wish on Star Hill and him being in the end credits. Game manuals hardly exist nowadays and the ones that do feel bland and uninteresting. Soulless. DKC1's manual would have Cranky Kong often popping up and saying some silly things to make reading through it fun. Cranky for an instance would be in the memo page of the manual saying how it's a waste of paper if one asks him.

I do wish Super Circuit`s SNES tracks were better treated though. I used to play this game a lot and preferred it over Super, but it isn't really special anymore for me, but it still is worth a shot for some one who has never played it.

The answer is subjective, and as someone who was there for the release of the first Mario Kart, imho, YES! Super Mario Kart on SNES may be hard to go back to.. but 64 is perfection in it's own hard to explain way, especially with a 2nd player in VS or battle. Rainbow Road was always our tie breaker course back in the day lol. I do agree with your sentiment on Royal Raceway. As far as Banshee Boardwalk and Toads Turnpike (and Bowsers Castle.. and Yoshi Valley for that matter) are just a case of gettin' gud. I'm glad you enjoy the game!

That being said this one aged poorly with the controls and the content. Even for the Kart racers that came out in the N64; like Diddy Kong Racing and even Mickey Speedway USA, had more to offer.
That also being said, this game is good to play with friends and those close to you.
Also, if you want another good version of MK64 Rainbow Road. Listen to the one used in F-Zero X JPN version.

Honestly, it depends on your game preferences rn. If you‘re not used to seeing the possibly worst graphics chosen for a game like this, then you might have a hard time getting into it. The graphics are like that so you can play 4 player splitscreen, I couldn‘t find another explanation for that. What is worse, is that the handling of the karts, doesn‘t feel like it corelates to the sprites of the drivers. Yet, the controls feel like an arcadey go kart sim. The game overall is quite fun. You just have to get used to it. The Npc drivers cheat tho. Nomatter how much you are in front, nomatter which item you have that speeds you up, the npc‘s are always stuck right behind you.

This game is timelessly fun. If for any reason you ever feel like you've squeezed everything there is to get out of it, or if you're just feeling particularly bored or curious one day - play it on an emulator on like 150-200% game speed. Its INSANE. Battles become a manifestation of pure chaos, especially if you put in item cheats like infinite green shells or bananas. And racing on otherwise mundane tracks like Wario Stadium becomes as exhilarating as a pod race. One of the most fun gaming experiences I've EVER had, and just in the last few years.

Bowser's Castle was always my favorite course in the game. Just enjoyed the aesthetic of the course, the difficult turns that made it more fun to play when mastered, and the music just sounded so dark and evil but at the same time Rated E for everyone.
With that being said, the game will always have a special place in my heart since i got it around release as a child but i went back to it last year or so and i would rather play the newer Mario Karts. The main reason is the rubber band AI and how on 150cc if they disappear out of your sight they turn into straight gods and its near impossible to catch them.

I'm literally the same age as the 64, so I was pretty familiar with the system despite never owning one. Like you, nobody I knew had an SNES, but I did play my older sister's Genesis once when I was 7.
Crazy how there's a big gap between the 16 bit generation and the 5th generation of gaming. Nowadays we think the n64 as old school, but for guys who grew up playing 8 bit and Atari games would see it as more new school.

and yes the region you play matters because luigi, peach, toad, and wario all have different voices in japanese, and the bowsers castle thwomps sound different in japan because wario was voiced not by charles martinet but thomas spindler. he also voiced wario in mario party 1 and 2 as well as super circuit (which re-used the japanese mario kart 64 voices)

Not only you can escape the banana traps, you can keep the blue shell behind you (just before shooting it) so you can smash other players like a wrecking ball with your cart, there are no items to counter the blue shell if you are in 1st place, you can control the rebounding of your cart when you are falling from a long jump (mostly from ramps).... an overall far superior version of them all in my opinion. Thank you for this walk down memory lane! I loved this game so much as a kid.
I still vividly remember the day I got this game (it was my third game for the N64, after Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings). It was a sunny, but seemingly ordinary elementary school day. Yet, on my walk home from school I somehow felt like this day was kind of special. And it was: When I got home, my parents surprised me with this game. No birthday or somilar involved, just a gift that came out of nowhere.
Even though the game aged quite badly in some parts (mostly graphics and AI), I absolutely have to agree with you about the music. Nostalgic bonus points aside, it sounds like there was more love involved into composing these tracks, giving them almost a magical ring to it. And yes, the Kalimari Desert music was one of my favorites as well, although my very favorite piece of music in this game is the end game credits track, which I really wish you would have mentioned it in your video. That track already left me in awe as a child and to this day, it almost brings a tear to my eyes everytime I hear it.
What also made the game so much fun was the crazy wild short cuts, that often were based on bugs or at least oversights in development. My personal favorites were veering off to the left at the big jump right after the start on Rainbow Road by using a mushroom, aiming for the part of the track that went there, making you skip a vast section of the track. On the big jump on Royal Raceway, you could also veer to the left, also using a turbo mushroom. Although you never could make the jump to the part of the track that you could see there, Lakitu still would place you there, when you only made it far enough before falling into the water.
Additional fact about the game: Nintendo always lied about the stats of the three different driver classes. It was always suggested that the heavy weights had the highest top speed (Untrue! Light weights had it.) and the lowest acceleration (Also untrue! Medium weights had the lowest acelleration. And also the lowest top speed...). Which in reality makes the light weights the best pick by far, for they both had fastest top speed and acceleration. And rendering both medium weight characters completely useless.
Although that screaming engine sound of Donkey Kong's kart made him a vailable pick by itself...

Haven’t watched the video yet but I’ll give my take.
I’ve been replaying every mainline Mario Kart game from Super Mario Kart to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to rank each entry’s tracks from worst to best before ranking all 284 tracks once I finish 8 Deluxe.
I did Mario Kart 64 earlier this year and overall I do consider it a good game and recommend playing it if you are given the chance to do so.
Most of the tracks are enjoyable though most struggle to be better than good I’d argue. Many suffer from bad design issues or simply aren’t interesting enough to justify being better than good. Examples include Royal Raceway where it’s misleadingly easy to fall off the track (sometimes while even being on the road), DK’s Jungle Parkway with the sharp 90 degree turn immediately after the big jump though you can angle your kart off the jump to account for this, Yoshi Valley with the long respawn time due to how long it takes to fall to the floor, Wario Stadium with the ending jump that if failed will force you to replay a surprisingly long chunk of the track, and the worst case Rainbow Road which despite looking gorgeous visually and despite having an incredible soundtrack is ruined by excessive guardrails and it’s insane length making a track with potential to be amazing instead a slow drawn out hell to endure. Despite several tracks having significant design flaws most do remain enjoyable and a fun time overall. I also enjoy the various shortcuts this game has to offer and in general it’s a pretty fun game to simply mess around in to see what craziness you can make happen.
I think it’s also worth mentioning the CPUs which are notorious for their rubber banding and overall I’m not a fan of them in this entry. If you can I’d argue it’s much better to play with friends than alone. This could be said for any Mario Kart entry since playing with friends is awesome but it’s especially true in MK64. Multiplayer exclusive versus mode is my preferred way to replay this game’s tracks but of course the tracks aren’t everything.
The battle mode is surprisingly good with 4 solid battle stages to pick from (Block Fort being a fan favorite for good reason) and the last man standing balloon battle works very well too. This is certainly one of the strongest battle modes in the series to date but unfortunately is multiplayer exclusive.
Is this game worth playing? If you happen to get the chance to play it when you are over at someone’s house or something like that then yes I’d say so. Is it worth going out of your way to specifically purchase though? No I don’t think it is unless you really want to. All tracks but Wario Stadium have been remade and basically every remake is superior to the original version. All the battle courses except Double Deck have been remade and while this is among the stronger battle modes in the series, other ones exist. I can’t say it’s worth buying a game just to play the battle mode lol.

@ I watched the video and it’s well made. Good job.😁 I especially agree with you on the music being really good. The Credits, Rainbow Road, and Toad’s Turnpike all stand out especially as songs I love from MK64 with the credits being among the best songs in the entire series imo. Never grew up with MK64 and yet the credits hits like a train every time in terms of the emotions which to me is incredible. Also I wanted to clarify that while I don’t like Rainbow Road in this game gameplay wise, I do love its visuals. Easily the prettiest track in this game and to this day one of the best tracks visually in the series as well which is very impressive given how old this game is.

Way too many memories attached to this game ! I loved the hell out of it, especially the drifting and the predictability. I never played the ones after that because I didn't buy any consoles. I love that game to death. The new ones seem dull and tame. But hey, I'm a 90s kid. I can't help it. I played Mario Kart Tour and...whatever...the N64 version will always be #1 in my heart. It is my first and last Mario Kart.

after playing mario kart 64 and tour over the years i can conclude tour has a copy of 64 CPU but worst, in tour they now drop bombs and when you throw an item it triggers the game to fire all of the CPUs items which hit you and they speed up like in this game but way worst in tour on 150CC.

It’s a tricky question. It’s like asking “what’s the best movie of all time?”
The top of these prestigious lists often use old movies from the 1930s-1950s.
Are these actually the “best” movies? Would a common young adult of today really enjoy those movies? Or do those movies just have the biggest impact that we see nowadays?
“Best video game of all time” lists are often similar and usually feature older games, often games from the Nintendo 64 era.
While I have a lot of nostalgic bias, the reality is that most of the time, a young person today would rather play Breath of the Wild instead of Ocarina of Time, or Mario Kart 8 deluxe instead of Mario kart 64.
Really, the 80s and 90s video games will likely feel more and more dated as time goes on.
I never played Super Nintendo, so when I try to play Super Nintendo Mario kart, I don’t enjoy it at all, the visuals and controls are just awful to me.
But someone with nostalgia might think it’s great.

Agreed. I was born in 89, and I never even knew about the existence of the SNES until around the year 2000, and no matter how good a game like Super Mario World might have been back in the day, it will always be just some game to me.

    Hell no!
This game sucks. I always hated how difficult this game was as a child. Now due to the internet and technology, I find out that this game cheats like a mf? CPU behaves extremely different when they're not on screen. It clips through walls, rides through hazards without penalties, hover in the air, shell and bananas don't stop them, and worst of all, two CPUs will always follow along with your pace no matter if you have a golden mushroom.
It's an extremely cheap rigged game and I never liked it.

It wouldn’t say this game sucks but i do heavily agree with you on the fact that rubberbanding AI heavily brings down this game’s single/ 2 player replayability. The fact that no matter how well you play, the Ai will always be right behind you is bullshit. Mortal Kombat 2 type of shit going on in the background

Everyone always talks about how Diddy Kong Racing is the better game because of its Adventure mode. And I understand the argument. But from an experienced players pov, Mario Kart 64 is more fun to return to because the “rubber banding” cpu’s keep the game from becoming too easy overtime. Where in returning to Diddy Kong Racing, there’s no difficulty in the game unless you play Adventure mode with the coin challenges.

IMO the wide courses on modern Mario Kart make the games way too easy and less fun. I assume they made them this way to accomodate more racers since there was only 8 on the N64.
Grounded Blue Shell is also way more fair than the flying one, because it hits everything in its way until it gets to you. The flying one in newer games punish only the first player. How does that help the guy who launched it from way far back? Terrible design.
This game is easily the best MK for me. I lose interest quickly with the other ones. This one, I could play it all day.
