Mario Kart 64 was such an important part of my childhood. You had to be there in 1997 playing split screen battle mode and experiencing your first grand prix. It was a mind blowing experience coming out of the Genesis and SNES era. The nostalgia for MK64 hits just as hard as Super Mario 64.

Great video, and Mario Kart 64 was such a wonderful game. But - objectively speaking - there's no way to say it's the best Mario Kart game without some serious nostalgia glasses on. Floaty controls, blurry graphics ... there's nothing in that game that has not been done better since. Mario Kart 8 does everything Mario Kart 64 did, but significantly improved.
Mario Kart 8 makes the other ones obsolete... MK64 included.
Don't get me wrong ... I spent countless days of my life playing Mario Kart 64 back in the day, and the memories are wonderful. And, it did set the foundation for what came next ... but today, there is really no reason to go back to it other than a brief trip down memory lane.

You have to give Nintendo credit for their system naming convention and marketing during the Super NES and N64 eras. All you had to do was add "Super" or "64" to the name to tell what system it is to an existing franchise.

It's always amusing to think about how Mario Kart 64 is the title I have the least memories of growing up. The original was ingrained in my brain due to a mix of Nintendo Power and a neighbor who would get practically every notable title on the SNES when they came out. When it came to 64 I had already moved onto Playstation (had to follow my RPG obsession) but would play occasionally at parties and the like. The future titles however, Double Dash on, I would play a ton of with friends and family. I think the last time I played Mario Kart 64 was about a decade ago after a night of bar hopping, crashed with a group of people at someone's house and it devolved into a night of playing N64 titles.
This was yet another great look at an incredibly influential game! My first day of vacation and this very much hit the spot.

I first played Mario Kart 64 in a hospital while I was recovering from surgery. I was 6 or 7 at the time, and while Super Mario 64 felt confusing and directionless (I eventually learned to love it on the DS), Mario Kart was pretty good, you know, for a Mario game. I was a Sonic fan, what can I say?
The first Mario Kart I owned myself was Super Circuit for the GBA, which in my opinion is a wonderful evolution of the original Super Mario Kart, bringing in a few touches from 64 where it can (the cast, the items, and having all the courses be unique). It even has all the courses from the SNES game included! I picked up 64 for myself when it came out on the Wii Virtual Console, and it's still a blast to play even today.

A lot can be forgiven about Mario Kart SNES being the first outing, establishing the brand and concept and the basics. Though there is no doubt, Mario Kart 64 was an improvement on every level. It's just a more playable and accessible game, and the computer controlled characters aren't complete cheating bastards like in the SNES version. It's just a more fun game overall. This game is just endlessly appealing. It's not the first game I played technically but the first I ever got into. Nintendo at that point was still putting out these simple, fun games you can play over and over with no conclusion during a time games were starting to become more like movies -- just because their gameplay paradigms are so amusing and satisfying. None of the other MK games come close. The only reason I would buy the latest MK is because I was hoping it'd be like 64 in some way. I miss it, want this approach to return -- and I want the blue shells, coins and superficial gimmicks to burn in hell.

Played all the Mario Karts ever since the SNES original and sure had tons of fun with all of them.
I honestly think that Mario Kart Wii and 8 Deluxe are the definitive entries in the series, however what you said during the video about improvements made with MK64 holds true.
That splitscreen map annoyed me even as a kid, especially since F-ZERO utilities the whole screen and has a map too.
And Super Mario Kart's A.I. cheated brutally.
Mario Kart 64 got rid of those issues and despite having its own share of problems (4P mode ran at half the frame rate and had no music for instance), the courses and battle mode were just so much more fun.
Sure SMK couldn't do much beyond what was possible at the time with the Super Famicom and mode7 feels slippery especially these days when coming from newer games, but it was nonetheless a fun milestone for what's to come and that was basically two continuations of the SNES (PS1 and N64) and SEGA pushing for low priced arcade experiences at home (Saturn).
Overall, the 90's were a crazy fun ride for videogames, going from 16bit to 128 in just 10 years.

Sometimes the jump from one stage of concept to the next version is so large it gets difficult to go back.
That certainly is the case for Mario Kart 64 as it eclipses the SNES original on every level.
Another example of this is Super Smash Bros. While the N64 original was great and so much fun back in the day. When Melee came outon the Gamecube it made going back to the original difficult.
I also like how point out the coins. I never liked the concept of coins to increase speed. It's already bad that you got hit by something and stopped dead in your tracks but now you also lost coins which makes getting up to topspeed difficult again. I was excited when I saw the announcement for Mario Kart Wii but when I saw the coins I skipped it.
To me personal the best Mario Kart is DS. If I have to mention a home console version it would be double dash on the gamecube. But DS is pretty much perfect if you ask me.

So i saw your thingy about Spiderman, and gawd damn i had to stop listening bc i was so awe struck in both astonishment and laughter by how INSANE the new story for spidermans origins were. I feel like there was some time era when Japan was so obssessed with aliens, and beings from other planets in their media.
I didnt mind the twisty spin on spiderman, and found it refreshing really bc it was just something new and original, at least it seemed that way to me, when we live in an era, where stories and originality have never been so lacking. I honestly enjoy these Japanese perspectives on American comics, like for example, i recently discovered there is a Hulk manga, where instead of gamma radiation, it goes the more serious route, similar to Godzilla with Bruce Banner being transformed via a nuclear bomb.
I look forward to more of your stuff ! 😄👍
