Well worth it I would say, I was 7 when this came out and remember they day my cousin got it for his birthday. Just such an amazing moment and it wasn't even my birthday.
I remember being allowed to skip school that day to stand in line at my local Toys R Us to grab my copy of SMB3. I can still recall the energy in that line. People young and old were literally buzzing. Man, I miss those yellow slips that you would take to the video game cage.
My dad was a merchant marine at the time of the release in Japan and brought it home with an adapter so we could play it in the states. With the official strategy guide in hand, my brothers and I spent EVERY ounce of free time in the mushroom kingdom. We were gods on the playground with our knowledge. By the time it dropped in the US, I was the go to guy for tips and tricks! Hands down my favorite game of all time
36:45 My favorite SMB3 memory is playing through the game with my dad. I vividly remember playing through World 6 and my mom came home from grocery shopping. She surprised me with the Christmas Cap'n Crunch cereal. Instead of waiting until morning, my parents let me enjoy a bowl of Christmas Capn Crunch cereal with my dad that afternoon while playing SMB3
My late dad had bought a NES for me when I was a child. To this day my sister and I always reminesce over our childhood especially over Christmas holidays where we'd spend hours playing Super Mario Bros 3. One of the most iconic and memorable part of my childhood that I'll never forget ❤️
SMB 3 is truely a timeless masterpiece. My brother abd I spent so many hours playing tgis game. I could never get past the "angry sun level" as a kid. The accomplishement I felt beating the first ship I will never forget. I felt like I grew up a bit that day.
Bullfrog Jay I used to use my P Wing on the Angry Sun level until I finally beat it in 1991. Fun times. This game changed the way I looked at games and the world. It's the measuring stick.
Mario 3 was released in the UK when I was Thirteen, and the hype around this game is unmatched by any game before or since. I played Mario 3 for Three Months every single day until I conquered the game finding every secret and destroying every level. Good times. Love the video, takes me on a nostalgia trip down memory lane 👍
This was a really solid documentary. Great job man. Had me captivated the whole way through, a whole bunch of tidbits I didn't know about the game, all kinds of commercials, some of which I had never seen before, some of which I fondly remember, and of course all our favorite parts of the game itself.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. At the time it was my favorite game and everyone wanted it. So I tried to bring back that feeling and a lot of people said they felt it. Thanks
This video was truly a blast from the past. As someone that has grew up on the NES and STILL has the copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 that I got for my ninth birthday in 1990, this video almost made me want to cry. I cannot tell you all of the fantastic experiences I've had with this game in my youth. Keep up the good work.
i wholeheartedly agree. greatest game of all time. the replay value on this game is bonkers. i beat it in like 1990 and i was 7. i can sit down today and still play through it at 36 and its still just as enjoyable.
I’m 34 so my very first memories of SMB 3/SMB/Duck Hunt, TMNT NES games in general were originally me hitting buttons not knowing what I was doing. My cousins would just give me a controller when they babysat me to keep me occupied. My grandpa bought a Snes at launch and Super Mario World. That was the first game I remember actually understanding what I was doing, getting fully engrossed in a game and falling in love with gaming. I ended up beating it before I started kindergarten. SMW is still my favorite 2d platformer of all time. Well a few years later my Snes collection had grown huge but I vaguely remembered the system that came before. I ended up finding and buying an NES with about ten games at a garage sale. SMB3 was one of those games. Most of the games were tough for me to play after truly growing up on a 16 bit system but SMB3 was the exception. It was more Mario platforming goodness and I was shocked how well a game on this older hardware still played perfectly and held up. I also loved the creativity in the world/level design. I loved how the difficulty was a bit tougher than World. I loved the creativity of the power ups. World is still my favorite 2d platformer and Mario game but 3 is literally right behind it and I can understand why many think it’s the best and their favorite.
I like your presentation and narration style, it's professional and easy to listen to - you don't sound desperate for the viewer's attention and the content is strong enough to hold its own without speed-talking or forced intensity. For a 1985 born player like myself, there's nothing new for me here but I enjoy watching regardless and I'm always looking for channels like this.
I’m glad you like it! Personally I hate that style of video which evolved from RUclips and trying to get clicks. I mean I’m happy if people like this video but the legacy of the game is the customer here. If that’s not served, it’s worthless in my opinion. Thanks for watching
Toejam&Earl I just think David means since he played SM3 as a kid while it was out it probably has been an interest to him where he’s already consumed the history of the title. Being born in 1980 I too was around for the launch and the game is one of my favorites so I have seen all the history on it before too. But, GTV does a fantastic job on these videos so it’s a pleasure to see it all again and there are some new things I didn’t know in most of GTVs history videos.
this is gonna sound crazy but i find something very calming or zen like about that yellow mario 3 box art, whenever i see it on a poster or add or vid it just puts me at ease.
I still remember unwrapping the box for my birthday.. I was 5 in 1990 so I must have gotten my NES in that spring or summer while my birthday is in December. SMB3 was the first other game I got for the console (would usually borrow games from other kids).. That big yellow box will always he my favorite piece of video game box art
It's amazing how many of us had the same experience at the same time. I was the same age and I believe I got it that Christmas also. My all time favorite video game.
Yea not even for me! One guy left 10 comments once about how “the Jews” kept Atari out if Japan and all this crazy stuff. Of course it’s crap but it gave me a laugh
Mario 3 is one of my all time favorite games, and yes The Wizard was one of the reasons I wanted it. Super Mario World came out later and has much more exploration to it, but Mario 3, it feels more "magical" to me. The worlds, power-ups, and enemies were more creative despite its simpler 8-bit presentation.
I feel the same! Something about a trilogy and while 16 bit was out there most of us hadn’t experienced it yet plus the hype machine behind it makes finally getting the game amazing
Not to downplay world but that was more of a snes tech demo like the original smb, it was our introduction to the super Nintendo and how it worked. SMB3 was the finale of the Nes, pulling out all the tricks they had learned over the years.. I think that's why SMB3 feels more of a complete package
That’s true! It’s a weird juxtaposition and to me very interesting. Mario 3 the peak of old tech. Mario 4 the beginning of new tech. “Worst” I guess but it’s not the right word. Thanks for watching! 🍃
@@GTV-Japan just see the jump in animation from super Mario world to yoshis Island.. I feel yoshis island is more comparable smb 3, two great systems at their peak.
Still remember all the flute locations and warp pipes even now as a 37 year old. It's my second favourite platformer only to sonic on megadrive. Long live Nintendo,I want a release of SMB3 .
By the way I. The thank you letter in the Jp manual they mention that the 2 whistles in world 1 are a way to quickly return to your last place played because they couldn’t put in a battery save. Don’t know why they couldn’t but that’s pretty cool of them
I was 12 years old in 1990 & I remember all of this so well. I believe this is the best video game of all time. I have so much nostalgia attached to this game
So much nostalgia. I can vividly remember the long wait for this to actually be released and available and finally seeing the yellow box Christmas 1990...
These were some of the happiest days of my life. Playing SMB3 was a family activity for me, my cousin, and my uncle. I never owned the game as a kid, as they only ever rented games. But we still managed to beat it. This and the 1990 Mario show were awesome. I had jumping Mario for years until it broke. And I had a Super Mario Bros. 3 birthday cake with figurines on it.
Update 11/3** This video has gone to the front page of RUclips! I’m trying to read every comment but so many are coming I might miss a few! ** Please share your experiences and memories of Super Mario Bros 3 with us! Was it on NES, SNES or later? Let's hear YOUR stories!
Gaijillionaire Ah Super Mario Bros. 3 The very first game I ever owned. My story with Video Games begins when as a toddler my cousin saw me toddle and I discovered their Nintendo Entertainment System. So for kicks and giggles they popped in Duck Hunt and handed me the gun controller. Eventually they played Super Mario Bros 1 . I was hooked, I do wonder if I became the kid that wouldn’t leave as I believe my Aunt told my parents to get a Nintendo just to have at home as I was fanboy, a very young fanboy. So one day (between January 1991-December 1992, sadly I don’t exactly remember when). Mom Dad and I got in the car late at night drove to the mall and we picked up our Very Own Nintendo Entertainment System and the light gun too. I was beyond happy as a little boy getting my first Video Game System, next to my Thomas the Tank Engine and Sesame Street toys I just couldn’t wait to play (but I had to) and they couldn’t wait to play together as a Family Super Mario Bros. & Duck Hunt..... Except, That wasn’t the version of the NES they bought.... It was the Challenge Set, I wouldn’t be playing Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt.... I would be Playing Super Mario Bros. 3 At first after hooking up the system and playing the game seeing Super Mario Bros. 3 They freaked out. as it wasn’t SMB1/Duck Hunt they thought I’d hate it they disappoint me etc... but they were shocked to see I was playing it and having fun. I don’t know if I knew at first it was a sequel to SMB1 but I must have thought it a cool new adventure to play on the Nintendo. But when I figured it out I loved it. It didn’t remedy me being the Kid that wouldn’t leave as my cousins then wanted to babysit me just to play SMB3. But 26-28 years later, that NES is still hooked to my TV and the keystone to my video game collection is that very same cartridge of Super Mario Bros 3.
my first game, besides Super Mario Bros 1/Duck Hunt that was in every NES bundle, was Super Mario Bros 2. When I heard of Super Mario Bros 3 I was extremely excited. I didn't even KNOW there was a 16 bit console at the time (Genesis.) 1989 and 1990 were the years I was Mario 3 CRAZY, drawing Mario 3 maps and characters in my notebooks or putting stickers everywhere... I grew up in the 80s and 90s, so I was there for every Mario release. I may have been too young for Donkey Kong in the arcades, but I do remember the Saturday Supercade show fondly. You know that "eat, drink, sleep nintendo" SNES commercial from Toys R Us? That was about me as a little girl. I was Mario and Nintendo obsessed.
Rosemary Marie excellent story, Funny thing, I didn’t get SMB 2 (USA) till about Summer 92, then I asked Mom if one day we’d get that Mario 2 game i saw on the TV (which was Super Mario Land 2). But there it was for the Nintendo Entertainment System. We picked it up and pushed play, It was a fun game to play after swimming in the pool and waiting for the cartoon to come on TV. Along with SMB 3 & SMB 1/Duck Hunt. Its Odd looking back that I played that game the same year Japan got the game.
Rosemary Marie I remember those days too, I love those days, though it got hard relocating to the rural part of the state where they must have thought I was nuts as a kid.
Rosemary Marie But I do remember when I discovered the Sega Genesis, Walked at Toys R Us and there it was. Too bad I got SNES when I saw it, That was when my parents put their foot down, Wouldn’t get a new game system until 1997, The N64.
When you take a look at the gameplay/graphics/music of other games on the NES and competing systems in the 80's around the same time as Super Mario Bros 3, it seems like this game made a quantum leap in every aspect of the game. It looks like a game that was YEARS ahead of anything else in it's day and it still holds up today in 2019 as one of the greatest video games ever made, if not THE best video game of all time. The gameplay is so polished and refined that simply MOVING YOUR CHARACTER is one of the core things that makes it so fun. The varied level locations were unlike anything else, the music complimented the gameplay perfectly, the bonuses and secret areas were revolutionary. This game was like something from the future. A testament to INCREDIBLE game design from every department.
My neighbor at this time was one of those kids that had all the newest things before anyone else. He had this game a week or more before the actual release. I remember him knocking on my door in the morning holding this game up with a big smile on his face. We then went and knocked on the doors of all the neighborhood kids we felt were worthy of this day and all rode our bikes back to his house to play it in a big group. It's a core memory.
On the Mario Happy Meals, I'll have you know I'm almost 40 and I STILL get the toys whenever they have them on offer like the 1up mushroom (that even makes the noise when you push the button underneath) or the light-up invincible mario! but I have to say SMB3 is probably close to my all time favorite in the series!
Cool! I don’t remember those but in Japan right now they have a new set of Mario toys despite no current new release being out. Maybe they’re in every country. Thanks for watching
I remember playing Super Mario Brothers 3 as a kid in the early nineties. That game was part of the idyllic, halcionic days of summer for me growing up. I didn't always get along with the neighbor kids growing up, but this game brought us together. We all loved it. After you've beaten the game, there was so much hidden in the game afterwards. Oh, the memories.
I’m from the UK and it released here in August 1991. By the time the game dropped here, the anticipation that had been brewing for around 2 years (for us) was at peak level.. Can you imagine waiting 25% of your entire lifetime for a game- a game you already know a lot about and it still delivering in every aspect!? This game was a phenomenal production and a testament to the genius of the staff who created it. I was more hyped for this than I was for my snes which I got around a year later. Thanks for this video, brought back so many memories! I love that you emphasised the long wait us kids had to ‘endure’- I’ll be sure to check out your Mario All-Stars vid when I get a chance too! 👍🏼
I like the way you use the word deliver. I always use that term’ I can’t imagine that wait. I mean I can understand waiting 25% of my life for something because I’ve been waiting 14 years for the next cure album. But that’s hardly Mario 3. 😂 it must have been a joyful day when you finally got it. Thanks for sharing your story!! 🍃
This is the level of entertainment i really appreciate! Thanks for your hard work on this project. I can only imagine the amount of time spent from retrieving sources and information to the hard hourd of editing. KUDOS you have a new follower :)
Thanks! It was weeks of work (sometimes while working!) a similar video but for a different game is coming in a few days! Thanks for watching and hope to see you there
Great piece, appreciate your in depth look at quite possibly my favorite and most beloved game off all time. It just brings back so many great fond memories, and is such a beautiful part of my childhood, along with the NES system as a whole. Keep making awesome videos like this on more franchises for any console, your hard work shows in this complete thouroug look at this one game, and is simply amazing, thanks again, much appreciated :)
Thanks! I’ve mostly gone thru games as they turn 30 so mostly 86-88 for now and move to 16 bit next year but it’s really just what interests me. I hope to talk again soon and thanks for your support
@@GTV-Japan Great!..I'll look forward to your 16 bit entries on your channel, and always more than happy to support quality pieces that are not only highly informative, but hugely entertaining, and will certainly recommend these to everyone I know, great work.
Still till this very day, post Mario Odyssey, Mario 3 is my favorite Mario game of all time. No Mario game has ever come close. Everything that game had for an NES game was amazing. The soundtrack is so beautiful and iconic. Love that game. Excellent video by the way.
I remember bugging the shit out of my grandparents till they would rent this for me the week it came out and I played it so long and pushed the buttons so much that I get blisters on my thumbs. Its still in my top 3 of the best games ever.
My brother and I got this game for Christmas in 1990. This is still one of my favorite games to this day. I still have it, and my own kids have enjoyed hours of playing it as well. Truly they made a masterpiece.
This game helped shape my childhood, and like you said, the magic is still there 30 years later. I still play the game, remembering a little boy sitting on the floor infront of his yellow colored black and white tv playing it over and over again.to this day i still think its the best game ever made
Amazing job! I really enjoyed how well put-together this was; you're really doing some amazing stuff. The pacing and info given was perfect; I especially liked the did you know moments as well as the historical ties too.
I remember when my cousin got this for his birthday when it first came out. Somehow his Dad knew about the white block secret, I don't know how the hell he knew that. This was pre-internet. Still play this sometimes, maybe after this video. Good work
Cool! Thanks sharing the story. As for the white block it’s possible he read it in gamepro or another magazine as they often took from Japanese mags where all the secrets were out
I figured out the white block on my own. When I was younger, before I had access to the internet and any game pro magazines, I would play stages over and over trying to find any secrets. I found out getting all the coins in world 1-4 gives you an extra matching game.
Another great video. You managed to make me feel nostalgic for Mario 3 despite never having played it as a child. And it's nice hearing Toru Furuya in these old animations. Too bad Nintendo didn't keep him as Mario's official voice.
Thanks! Someone else said that too but I guess for a younger audience his current voice fits. If I can hit the nostalgia button then I’m doing it right and need to keep on the track 🍺!
I love how you used songs from and talked about Nintendo GSM Super Mario Bros.3, I love that album! It shows how popular and important Super Mario Bros.3 was. The arrangements are cool using 80s synths and actual samples from the game itself! Plus the final Original BGM medley at the end of the album.
My story: This was my birthday present, Sept. 1990. I turned 9. My mom went broke making sure I had a copy and it was the last major NES game I got before Sega Genesis changed my life. This is the first time I've heard the Japanese side of things!
What takes this game beyond great, to me, is the replayability of it *plus* the fact that it rewards you with that amazing music for playing it to completion. When I was a kid, I would play it every so often just to hear that song.
Awesome. I still have my dads. I had to buy games again because they weren’t with the console and I have no idea what happened to them. Had to either repair or replace the pins (can’t remember which I did), but it still works and I love it. Played it a lot together and with my brother as kids. I’m younger than the nes era myself, but I also have my own n64 from when I was a kid that I still play too. Same deal about not having my old games though. Weird
Thanks! You’re the first comment after it broke the 200k mark! I appreciate that you sat and watched it. Means a lot and makes it worth the hard work 🍃
Wow! A whole video on Super Mario Bros 3, it's history and legacy. Perhaps the best thing in this video was the discussion on the two year gap between the japanese and american release of the game. You talked about how other magazine publications covered the topic (there weren't many, and they had yet to reach the popularity of Nintendo Power at the time.) Another awesome video by Gaijillionaire.
Thanks so much! While I do present facts I always try to frame it from the viewpoint I had growing up and using the hindsight that we have now. But I noticed going back in old NP issues that after other magazines got really big they started admitting decisions were made in Japan. But still it was much a state run newspaper so to speak.
Thank you so very much for this. It was August the 30th 1990 when a cousin of mine came home from the states w/Mario 3. At that moment I did not know what an NES was and this was my first game ever. This is such a complete game, it has it all: you go airborne, you can swim, hunted houses, mini, mid and final bosses for each world. Everything that came afterwards had to build up Mario 3 willing or un-willingly. It is just a testament to its creator's genius, gaming as a whole and fandom. As you guys also said, it was a cultural phenomena you would come across an entire universe of Mario related products anywhere: clothing, adds, happy meals, cartoons, posters...everything. God 32 yrs now, I just can't believe it.
12:37 Holy crap. Mario swinging Bowser around by his tail in a Japanese tv commercial many years before SM64! Was that a regular thing in Japanese Mario culture? I don't remember that being a thing in the US but that would mean that when you swing Bowser around in 64 it may have been a bit of fanservice also because people had already seen it and thought it looked cool on tv. Can someone tell me more about this?
I don’t the game was meant to copy the commercial but peach’s castle as it appears in 64 shows up in a manga book from 1990 and Mario grows gigantic like New SMB in the same series. All very weird.
one of the best games ever made to date and still going strong..oh the hours and fun in the 90s ive had with this game.. im 37 years old now and thank you for taking me back to a way of life i wished still existed instead of this trash world we live in now
Aw don’t be so down, there’s still a lot of good in this world. But I think as we age there’s less time for the fun things we like. Thanks for watching 🍃
One of my favorite from the NES times. I had to ask my father for the money and I got it. Went right to the shop. It was a magical time :-). Seeing the boxart and played the first 2 mario games and then this gem
Honestly original SMB3 on the NES is my personal all-time favorite Mario game ever. I never got into the 3D games with Mario 64 and beyond. I love your presentation and documentary style yo. I've seen this video way before Gaming Historian's version. While I think his video is awesome too, I love how you covered a lot of stuff that he didn't, especially the culture aspects. Always looking forward to seeing more of your content!
Thanks! Same here. Actually I’ve never played Mario 64 beyond a few minutes every 5 years or so. Can’t get into it. Shhh don’t tell anyone but I’m working a follow up that’s about super Mario 4! It’s gonna be at least 1 hour (I hope) and dig deep as possible. Also I’ll revisit Mario 3 a bit in it as well and compare the two. Thanks for watching my friend! 🍁
Fantastic video! I stumbled across it and I just wanted to say you did an exceptional job. My most favorite game ever. Thank you for making this amazing documentary of this amazing game!
Your video on SMB3 rates up there with the game reviews for SMB3. Really well done man. Thanks from someone who was 11 when this game was released in the US and Ill never forget the hype, commercials, and playing it.
Playing SMB3 when it first came out, it was a biblical moment for me. The game’s world felt much larger in scope than it really was. Damn. I have my Switch with me as I type. I’m going to play it right now.
I really enjoyed this video! One of my favorite moments of this game comes at the end after Bowser is defeated. The credits roll while a montage of the levels plays on the screen, giving the player a sense of accomplishment, congratulations, and a thank you for playing. This game celebrates the end like no other, and I'm ready to play it all over again.
@@GTV-Japan : that may be a good reason for an Episode 2 ! :D I love all the japanese media you alwsays find, like old TV commercials and so on... It may help to lives there and speak the native language ;) ! GG again mate ! I continue to this day to share your Yumme Kojo / Mario 2 video, the most complete and accurate tale of this story ! I cannot understand why your channel didn't already EXPLODE. You should try to work with Kotaku or some gaming media, that would love your content on their page (they already posted some old ones if i remember well)
Thanks! Actually the algorithm kicked in three days ago and now I get 7-10 times more views than I had all year. Actually 2 of my videos were on Kotaku! But it’s up to them To choose what the run. Also Nintendo life does many of my vids. I appreciate the support from you! The original fan! 🍺
@@GTV-Japan : thanks, i'm always delighted to share your stuff on my media and the french gaming media were i work, it's not Kotaku or Polygon, but any little help is precious ;) ! Yes for sure, all these media pick the content they want, but i know a lot of french youtube creator that push a bit their content on these media. (like the simple fact of emailling or twitting them when you have new stuff...) you would be amazed (in a bad way) by the non pro-active posture a lot of journalist have...they wait for press release, or are subbed to Game Press, a website/hub for every press release, trailer, official statements etc... and are not realy actively searching for content. Mario 3 was clearly better than Super Mario World. The hype was infinitely greater, it didn't feel rushed, had a bigger soundtrack with better composed music, had alot more than 3 powerups
Very much agree with this comment. If felt (too me) that Nintendo may have rushed Super Mario World because they failed to see the impact Sega would have on the US market with both the Sega Genesis and Yuji Naka's Sonic the Hedgehog. They went from having a commanding albiet illegal hold on the market at 90% to a 40% sub 40% market share in 1991/1992. For reference I owned both consoles the year they came out (1989 and 1991). I always preferred my Genesis over the Snes especially when it came to platformers. The first Sonic was an amazing title that really made people take notice of Sega and their much edgier angrier vibe and I loved it; However, it was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that showed Sega knew how to make a platformer without compromises. What a time to be a gamer!
I agree with this comment as well. My wife and I love SMB 3 and play it to this day. Its just something about this game that keeps it a classic. I love Mario World but would choose SMB 3 over it any day.
First time ever watching one of your videos. Absolutely loved it. The commercial breaks were so interesting! Loved seeing media from the time. You've earned a new sub!! Keep it up!
Thanks! I got 67 others so if you got free time you’ll find something else you’ll like in the same style. Don’t be a stranger. Comment on what you like!
I didn't know Famicom stood for Family Computer until this video. I also didn't know about the ability to turn into a statue, the white mushroom house or that Mario Bros. mini game until now. I've been playing this game for decades and I still find new things about it.
Cool I’m glad you could learn something new! I did a separate video all about why Famicom is called Family Computer. It’s pretty interesting so check it out when you have time. Thanks for watching 🍃
I absolutely love Super Mario Bros 3. It has been my favorite video game since I was 8 years old. I'm 39 now and still play it. I never get enough. I have so many fun memories of playing. Greatest video game ever.
Cool! There’s one tip I left out and that is if you beat the game (and DONT reset) you get 28 p-wings on the next play through. On switch you can save state and then really have a fun go on the second time
Ill never forget the day i got this game. It was my sixth birthday and i was allowed to stay up late to play it. The next day i went next door to my friends house and we beat it together. Good times man, good times.
AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER MARIO BROS. JUST HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART!!!!!! JUST THINK, 10,000 YEARS FROM NOW, PEOPLE WILL STILL BE PLAYING SUPER MARIO BROS. 3!!!!!!!!!!! HOW PRIVILEGED WE ALL WERE TO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE MAGIC FIRST HAND!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow great editing and content, plus you informed me about a white mushroom that i had no idea existed. about 30 years I've played this game on on just about every console i own thanks to emulation and never once have i seen a white mushroom. lol Subbed for future content!
Fantastic video! Being born in 1984 living in the UK I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s with Mario in my childhood journey. I played all Mario games during this era, watched all the Mario Cartoons, remember getting my MacDonald’s Happy Meal in the early 90’s with the bouncing Mario on a spring. (Which featured on the commercial you put on this video) This was a time when the internet didn’t exist as we know it today, the only way to have fun as a kid was to ride a bike, fly a kite, play board games, watch TV with cartoons and of course playing the video games we knew of in this era. Many of the youngsters today don’t know how we grew up and it’s become totally different growing up now with the internet, social media and etc. This is a fantastic video! You brought back so many memories and explained the facts and information so well! Keep up the good work! From a 34 year old who is still geeky/nerdy, watch cartoons/anime and play games :3
I totally agree that this might be the biggest generation gap ever because of the internet. Ok imagine Mario 3 was coming out in 6 months. You’d have it preordered could watch half the game online and know all of it secrets. Plus have a million people weigh in on it which would affect your opinion of it too. It wouldn’t be the same because the wait and buildup. The not knowing was part of the experience and when you got the game the payoff was huge! That just can’t happen anymore. Thanks for watching
Born in 1983. This is my favorite game of all time. So many great memories playing it throughout my life. When i was dating my wife, we beat it while snowed in, shortly befoe we got hitched. So many sleepover runs as a kid, thag some to mimd, and now i play it with my kids. It's timeless.
I’ll never forget this game. I was in college when it came out and had a solid B in calculus. I got the game and ended up with a D.
Ha oh I’m sorry I hope things turned out ok in the end
Well worth it I would say, I was 7 when this came out and remember they day my cousin got it for his birthday. Just such an amazing moment and it wasn't even my birthday.
It had to have been worth it--you ended up with an A+ in Mario! 🤘
D is for degree 😎🤘🏼

This Video And Game Are Also Awesome. 👏
🎯🐺❣️
I remember being allowed to skip school that day to stand in line at my local Toys R Us to grab my copy of SMB3. I can still recall the energy in that line. People young and old were literally buzzing. Man, I miss those yellow slips that you would take to the video game cage.
That’s great! Skipping school alone was great enough but that must have been the ultimate day back then. Thanks for watching
Welcome to what it was like in Japan when Dragon Quest games came out. 😎
Me Too nothing like standing in line at Toy R US the night before a big title was released aghh the good ole days!!!!!!
The holy grail of video game rooms! I always wanted to go back in that room as a kid!
Hands down my favorite game of all time
awesome story!!!
I bet you felt like kings LMAO!!!!
Imagine owning Mario 2 and 3 at the same time
That was lucky!
That sounds like so much fun! I love Super Mario Bros 3 and groceries lol!
Nothing beats boring grocery store BS!! ⚾️
I love that ... I remember my mom just killing it when I was a kid and I'd try so hard to play like her
My late dad had bought a NES for me when I was a child. To this day my sister and I always reminesce over our childhood especially over Christmas holidays where we'd spend hours playing Super Mario Bros 3. One of the most iconic and memorable part of my childhood that I'll never forget ❤️
A great story thanks for sharing!
SMB 3 is truely a timeless masterpiece. My brother abd I spent so many hours playing tgis game. I could never get past the "angry sun level" as a kid. The accomplishement I felt beating the first ship I will never forget. I felt like I grew up a bit that day.
It is the standard to weigh all games against I’ll say
Bullfrog Jay I used to use my P Wing on the Angry Sun level until I finally beat it in 1991. Fun times. This game changed the way I looked at games and the world. It's the measuring stick.

Mario 3 was released in the UK when I was Thirteen, and the hype around this game is unmatched by any game before or since.
I played Mario 3 for Three Months every single day until I conquered the game finding every secret and destroying every level.
Good times.
Love the video, takes me on a nostalgia trip down memory lane 👍
Sounds great! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and memories 🍃
The frog suit also prevents Mario from slipping on ice.
Get out! I had no idea!
Man this game is freaking amazing!! I didn’t know that
Wow... I never even knew that and I have been playing the game since I was a toddler.
i never would have thought to try that
Same! Why would frogs be where it’s cold??
This was a really solid documentary. Great job man. Had me captivated the whole way through, a whole bunch of tidbits I didn't know about the game, all kinds of commercials, some of which I had never seen before, some of which I fondly remember, and of course all our favorite parts of the game itself.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. At the time it was my favorite game and everyone wanted it. So I tried to bring back that feeling and a lot of people said they felt it. Thanks
Wow, Super Mario Bros 3 is a timeless classic game.
It is! I wonder what games will be remembered in 100 years
Best game ever made. 👍
I think that Mario three will be remembered 100 years from now more than a halo and call of duty
Sure it will! I don’t know those games even now

I had a black Nintendo sweatshirt in the 1980's that had an almost foam like texture to the green lettering
Happy Birthday Super Mario Bros 3!
One of the best NES Games.
🎂 thirty candles!
Awesome! I’m glad this could hit the nostalgia button for you. Thanks for watching
Grew up with this game. So awesome. Brilliant video my friend.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it
i wholeheartedly agree. greatest game of all time. the replay value on this game is bonkers. i beat it in like 1990 and i was 7. i can sit down today and still play through it at 36 and its still just as enjoyable.
Exactly! Very few games are as fun on day 1 as year 30. Thanks for watching
Im 36 aswell
35 Here and completely agree, I'm watching youtube videos about it for crying out loud
you didn't beat it at 7 don't lie
Andy Kapsar Yes the greatest game ever.
Wow what a great story. Thanks for sharing your memories and opinions 🦖
Thanks for watching
ah yes im sure you knew every single fact in the video even tho most of it happened when you were no more than 5
Right I second that notion
Toejam&Earl I just think David means since he played SM3 as a kid while it was out it probably has been an interest to him where he’s already consumed the history of the title. Being born in 1980 I too was around for the launch and the game is one of my favorites so I have seen all the history on it before too. But, GTV does a fantastic job on these videos so it’s a pleasure to see it all again and there are some new things I didn’t know in most of GTVs history videos.
Yes some of my favorite game review channels are obviously the nerd, Teddy Rub skin and console wars you should look them up
this is gonna sound crazy but i find something very calming or zen like about that yellow mario 3 box art, whenever i see it on a poster or add or vid it just puts me at ease.
It’s very peaceful. Mm hmm.
Nostalgia is calming
I still remember unwrapping the box for my birthday.. I was 5 in 1990 so I must have gotten my NES in that spring or summer while my birthday is in December. SMB3 was the first other game I got for the console (would usually borrow games from other kids).. That big yellow box will always he my favorite piece of video game box art
Have that poster on my basement wall
It’s great.
I got this for Christmas 1990. I was 7. Still one of my all time favorite games, and now my kids enjoy it.
That’s great! Thanks for sharing your story
Outsider25E I want to show it to my son when he gets old enough, but I don’t own a CRT tv anymore. Where do you connect your old nes?
Use can use rca cables on an original nes. Just yellow and white, but red is ok too. If you have a model 2 nes though it probably won’t work.
It's amazing how many of us had the same experience at the same time. I was the same age and I believe I got it that Christmas also. My all time favorite video game.
I remember staying up all night after Thanksgiving dinner and finally beating it. Cant believe that's been almost 28 years now.
I love gaming late at night. Especially as a kid when it would be rare and special like on a holiday! Thanks for coming back for this video
I was 9 when I beat it. When the ending started up with the "Thank you Mario" I was getting so pissed! Then "Just kidding" like screw you game. lol
@@tyarmand2015 weirdest RUclips comment ever
@@sdigital0 Not even close.
@@mullaoslo yea. That’s still a great game
Super Mario 3 , Mario World and Mario Cart was the best and most played games in my household growing up. GREAT WORK
Thanks Corey. I’ll make a Mario World one in the future
That was the perfect age to experience that magic for the first time for sure. Thanks for watching 🍃
So much nostalgia. I can vividly remember the long wait for this to actually be released and available and finally seeing the yellow box Christmas 1990...
It felt like forever!! Thanks for watching
Wow that must have been some cake! Probably better than something you get at Wegmans.
Update 11/3** This video has gone to the front page of RUclips! I’m trying to read every comment but so many are coming I might miss a few! **
Please share your experiences and memories of Super Mario Bros 3 with us!
At first after hooking up the system and playing the game seeing Super Mario Bros.
Finally beat Mario 3 this year for the first time ever. It was about time.
Nice! Did you know you get 28 p wings if you play after beating it?
Did you finish every world, or did you warp?
Rob K oh I warped! I'm 37 with 2 kids. I don't have time to master the whole game. But maybe one day ;)
Another few years and you can do it all the way through with your kids!!
You the man 👍🏾
i cried watching this, it turn backs all of my happy memories
I’m glad you like it thanks for watching
Really amazing look at this classic game. Appreciate all the time and effort that went into this, was a great watch!
Thanks! I did the same treatment for many other games so go check them out and see what else you might like
I love this retrospective!!!!! I remember my parents randomly surprising me with this game.....soooo soooo happy!!!!!
Awesome! I hope you still have it. It was probably the greatest day a kid from 1990-93 could ever have
When you take a look at the gameplay/graphics/music of other games on the NES and competing systems in the 80's around the same time as Super Mario Bros 3, it seems like this game made a quantum leap in every aspect of the game.
All true points! Plus the buildup the hype and the excruciating wait to get your own copy too. Thanks for watching!
23:18 woah, until this moment I forgot that I got these toys in my happy meals when I was 6. I had Luigi, Mario, and the goomba. Crazy.
Nice to bring back that deja by all over again. Thanks for watching 🍃

Super Mario 3 is the only game I've ever loved to play and got the same level of enjoyment out of watching others play it too.

Hands down the best game on the OG NES IMO
Thanks for watching and I agree. Though I think Kirby’s Adventure pulled off some crazy graphics better than Mario 3
It's the pinnacle of the 8-bit era for sure.

I still play the game, remembering a little boy sitting on the floor infront of his yellow colored black and white tv playing it over and over again.to this day i still think its the best game ever made
Thanks for the comment! It’s exactly the response I’ve been hoping for
Amazing job!

Thanks for noticing that. I love remixed game music. And that album is great
Best moment of my childhood was getting Mario 3 for my 9th birthday, back in 1990.
Happy to hear you could get it!
My story: This was my birthday present, Sept. 1990. I turned 9. My mom went broke making sure I had a copy and it was the last major NES game I got before Sega Genesis changed my life. This is the first time I've heard the Japanese side of things!
Great story! Games were expensive for sure. Glad your mom delivered!
I'm so sorry.
Behind every Sega boy, there's always a Nintendo fan too
What takes this game beyond great, to me, is the replayability of it *plus* the fact that it rewards you with that amazing music for playing it to completion. When I was a kid, I would play it every so often just to hear that song.
Couldn’t agree more. thanks for watching
@@GTV-Japan likewise, thanks for the great content.

I grew up with the NES and I still have the one my siblings and I got in the late 80s.
Weird
I use to have an NES loved it in till Sega Genesis came out
This game is pure magic! I still play it to this day. Pipe world still gives me fits lol.. great doc, hats off to you, sir.
Thanks for sharing your story! I like hearing these
@@GTV-Japan Always a pleasure.

@@GTV-Japan oh man lookin forward to that!
Fuzzy November 21 or sooner! The first act (of 6!)is already written its 2800 words!

Fantastic video! I stumbled across it and I just wanted to say you did an exceptional job.
My most favorite game ever. Thank you for making this amazing documentary of this amazing game!
Thanks for liking it! It’s one of my favs not THE fav but in 89-90 I would have given my life to have it! Can’t say it about any other game

12:38 who would have thought beating Bowser in SM64 was inspired by this....
I'd never seen that.
U mean this 😃👉12:22
I really enjoy dancing to the background music of your Videos, I Just found, third time in a row.
Awesome! It’s always a party here at GTV
This deserves way more views. A few million, ideally.
It’s getting about 4-5 thousand a day so in about a year it just might. Fingers crossed 🤞
Indubitably.

Your video on SMB3 rates up there with the game reviews for SMB3. Really well done man. Thanks from someone who was 11 when this game was released in the US and Ill never forget the hype, commercials, and playing it.
We’re about the same age. I can’t remember a game that was torture waiting for. Maybe Zelda 2 but it’s not even close. Thanks for watching!
Man I love retro video game retrospectives! Looks like I shoulda found & subbed to this channel sooner, well I am now
Thanks for your support! I have about 50 other game videos so check them out when you can. You’ll find a few you’ll like I’m sure 🍻

Playing SMB3 when it first came out, it was a biblical moment for me. The game’s world felt much larger in scope than it really was. Damn. I have my Switch with me as I type. I’m going to play it right now.
Pay it forward ⬆️
this is a underrated channel good work
Thanks not Joe! I appreciate your support 🍄
Excellent channel, subscribed. As a hardcore collector of Japanese import games since the 1980's it's great to see content like this.
Thanks for liking it so much

This game is absolutely fantastical!
This video is so well done. Thanks for the amazing nostalgic trip!
Thanks Martin!
I love Mario saying, "Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!" as he hits the coin block in that animated Japanese commercial.
Mario confirmed for Canadian.
Mario has the *JAM!*
And I love that ending song!
While I had thought I knew almost everything about smb3, there were a few things I diddn't Excellent video.
Thanks for watching!
Simply one of the best games I have ever play and the greatest gift my late mom ever give me a christmas gift what a joy to play
It must have been a great Christmas! Thanks for sharing your story
Happy 30th Anniversary ! And again, a wonderful documentary full of great trivia and research !
Thanks! I could have kept giving but realized I was already late haha
@@GTV-Japan : that may be a good reason for an Episode 2 ! :D
I love all the japanese media you alwsays find, like old TV commercials and so on...
But it’s up to them
To choose what the run.
(some are subbed on youtube to your channel, but it's not the majority. Everyday i encounter collegues that aren't looking realy for content. Or only on other major outlet. So, maybe take contact with some community managers for these sites, or just email them your new vid ! i'm sure it will help ;)
Well, looking forward your next video ! have a great day ++
I’ve some luck for sure. More than others
The music of SMB3 is the standout feature for me, as it is in SMW. Koji Kondo is a musical genius.
Great video 🙌
Thanks I’m glad you liked it! It’s amazing how many tracks they fit into that game!
Mario 3 was clearly better than Super Mario World. The hype was infinitely greater, it didn't feel rushed, had a bigger soundtrack with better composed music, had alot more than 3 powerups
Agreed! Mario world was bigger and brighter but not better
Well said sir. Id rather play 3 any day.
I agree with this comment as well. My wife and I love SMB 3 and play it to this day. Its just something about this game that keeps it a classic. I love Mario World but would choose SMB 3 over it any day.
If i had to sophie's choice one of them i'd keep SMW
Amazing video.
It's a letter of love for every Super Mario Bros 3 fans out there!
I’m glad you liked. It’s been a pleasure reading so many comments

@@GTV-Japan For sure! Always a pleasure to find a new channel with a huge back catalog of episodes for me to watch! :)
Great!

Where?
I didn't know Famicom stood for Family Computer until this video. I also didn't know about the ability to turn into a statue, the white mushroom house or that Mario Bros. mini game until now. I've been playing this game for decades and I still find new things about it.
Cool I’m glad you could learn something new! I did a separate video all about why Famicom is called Family Computer. It’s pretty interesting so check it out when you have time. Thanks for watching 🍃
I got it for my birthday in March of 1990.
Nice!! Your parents must have gone crazy trying to find it!
I absolutely love Super Mario Bros 3. It has been my favorite video game since I was 8 years old. I'm 39 now and still play it. I never get enough. I have so many fun memories of playing. Greatest video game ever.
31 years! Keep the streak going! Thanks for watching 🦝
@@GTV-Japan You're very welcome. I will.
Thank you so much for this!
And I am playing the game these days to finish it on switch
Great story!
This is the best Mario Game. Period.
Very informative documentary! I learn a lot about super Mario bros 3. You earn a new fan to your channel and a like 👍🏼 keep up the good work.
Thanks Mike!
Wha the hell....? I’ve never even heard of the white mushroom house or bonus ship until this video... crazy!
Go try it out! It’s fun
@@GTV-Japan Geez, I was 12 when I first played this classic.
Me too! It was the perfect age and time to be a gamer
@@GTV-Japan It was. I'm sure people half my age can't begin to understand how that all felt.
Nope! And kids today!! They couldn’t even accept life in the old days as a work of fiction ha
10000 years? Maybe it will
Wow great editing and content, plus you informed me about a white mushroom that i had no idea existed. about 30 years I've played this game on on just about every console i own thanks to emulation and never once have i seen a white mushroom. lol Subbed for future content!
Thanks! Don’t forget I have 70 older videos so there’s bound to be at least one thing you’ll like in there too. The next video is almost done as well
Fantastic video! (Which featured on the commercial you put on this video)
This was a time when the internet didn’t exist as we know it today, the only way to have fun as a kid was to ride a bike, fly a kite, play board games, watch TV with cartoons and of course playing the video games we knew of in this era.
I’m gonna need the Nintendo Power Glove with this bad boy
Hey keep your power gloves off her!!
“It’s Just Soo BAD. >:•D”
That’s awesome thanks for sharing!! 🦝
A letter to the fans...wow! how things changed.
haha good point!
This is some quality content right here. Thank you.
Thanks Seth!! 🍃
This is the greatest game ever made.
Of course it is and folks don't realize it
Aye son you’re off yer meds, Mario world is faaaaaaaar superior. Take off yer rose tinted specs
This was both informative and educational. LOVE this game. It has a TON of replay value =)
