mario might be super
but i'm super duper
with a big tuper
It seems like a lot of collect-a-thons with ensemble casts struggle with making their Heavies into cumbersome walking keys. I feel like they should take a page from kart racers' Heavyweights; making your Chunkys and Warios slower to get moving, but giving them the highest top speeds for high skill players.
Like imagine if this Wario had his tackle from the Wario Land games, but it was finicky to steer; so players willing to reach that high skill ceiling can make him as desirable as Luigi.
I liked it as a kid in 2006, which is probably what matters. For all of its negatives, it was amazing to have Mario 64 on the ds with significant bonus content.
The game was definitely a bit easier too. I never beat Mario 64 as a kid, but I did beat 64 DS as a kid
Yeah that bonus content was great! I spent a lot of time with the ds version just playing just that!
The fact the game encourages you to try out different characters for different stars is a good idea and very much in spirit of the original. People always bemoan that every level kicks you out after collecting a star, but nobody ever points out that this might have been intentional. You're not meant to just do every star in every level from start to finish and then hop into the next one to repeat the process. Otherwise, you wouldn't have to unlock the different caps or even stars to open doors. You go into one stage, get one or two stars, and then check out the next room.
By locking certain stars behind different characters, this is emphasized. Go play as Luigi for a while, see what you can achieve as him. Maybe Yoshi can do something Mario can't.
fun fact about Wario: he can punch away those huge moving box enemies in the desert level with the pyramid. I literally just found this out last night by pure chance despite playing this game since its release
I feel conflicted about the controls, in retrospect I can see that they're pretty rough but I find them more comfortable than the original N64 version, probably because i'm used to the different physics and whatnot. but man, I love this game so much. One of my most vivid memories is from school, me and like 7 other kids all had the game but none of us knew how to unlock Luigi and Wario. One other kid shows up one day with his DS and we all find out he's got everyone unlocked, so the next day we all bring our own DS's and this kid unlocked them for each of us. We all crowded around him like he was Jesus or something lol.
I also got a copy of the game on a R4 card at some point that allowed me to access test levels and go into any level as Yoshi, I recall one of the bosses actually having unique dialogue for him, despite there being no legit way for yoshi to ever get there. Interestingly there was also a cheat that could give any character wings or the metal ability, even both at the same time. If Yoshi was given wings they would appear on his back. The mutually exclusive powerups for certain characters was a strange choice given how everyone can still technically use some of them.
One other strange obscurity of the DS version I love is where one of the new stars is hidden, behind the door in the mirror room. It's literally just a completely white room with nothing in it except the star.
@@Doom_Slugthat one actually pissed me off as a kid. I thought I'd get a mirror castle, but no, a star...
Chief Chilly has unused Text for Yoshy.
Wow, you released this just as I was sitting down to use the toilet. Now I have viewing material. Thanks babe.
I hate you for this comment.
8:46 to me back in 2004 drawing on a touch screen felt so satisfying
It was something so new. Like how 3d graphics were new in 95
I came here expecting only a review of the game but I really appreciate you telling us more about the game's development history. I think the game was originally going to add much more to the original than it ended up doing. I wish we knew more about the team's initial ideas.
I have played this through with the thumb stylus. It’s far better than the dpad and you don’t have to awkwardly use B to run, but the N64 analog stick is still considerably better.
I also played it with the circle pad patch for the 3DS and I found them to be equal at that point. DS uses the wall jump from Sunshine, which to me is a considerable improvement over the original, but as you mentioned the side jump is fairly useless in DS. I think this is because you build your speed slower in DS, which means you have to wait longer to use the side jump, at which point you’ve gone too far to use it to get up to higher places. So it depends on whether you prefer a better wall jump or side jump.
If you use the thumb stylus you can switch the controls to Touch Mode. This maps the camera controls to X and Y, which along with the improved camera control is a massive improvement over the original. You have to use the touch screen to zoom in and out, but u didn’t find that to be much of a problem.
With the analog patch and a New 3DS you can leave the control in Standard Mode and still use the analog stick. This allows you to use X to zoom in and out and ZL/ZR or the c stick to control the camera. You can also use the dpad to easily walk slowly, though you can use the analog stick if you want.
I didn’t play any version until last year. I have since played the original NTSC version, DS with the thumb stylus, DS with the analog patch on a New 3DS and the Shindou edition, all on original hardware. I like them both equally, for different reasons.
Oh boy, can't wait to form my opinion on the one version of Mario 64 I've never played! :P
Good remake, bad system. SM64DS is an amazing remake, they didn't have to go so far as to have 4 playable characters, completely new levels, a new star for each course and changing up level design. Bad system not as in the DS is bad, but it's not a good system for this remake to be on, if it was on the Nintendo Switch (3ds would be forgotten) it would sell much better, but instead Nintendo neglects this version and just emulates the N64 version
Yeah, I also agree that while fun Super Mario 64 DS is a very flawed game. It just has too many gimmicks that force you to go to the damn character switch room, and had they made the game work like Super Mario 3D World or Super Mario USA AKA Mario Bros 2 in the west, where all the characters had different properties in their jump and run speed and power, but used all the power ups and stuff in the same way, then you could just have chosen your preferred character based on what you felt most comfortable, as you could play from the beginning all the way until the end with the same character you liked, but nowadays I just can't get behind Super Mario 64 DS, all because of that stupid character switch system, as it just consumes too much time, and the sad thing is that with Yoshi they pretty much had the right idea, because at the start of each level you can select the hat you want to use once you have unlocked the other characters, but because of the star doors and a bunch of stuff being exclusive to Mario, you are forced to switch to him and its annoying. If Peach had been made playable, as a reward for beating bowser in the final level, I think that would have made for a good payoff to clear the game, since for the most part she is usually one of the most broken characters, in the games where she appears, and it would have been fun playing as her.
I feel Wario should of made up for less jump hight and speed by taking less damage, and being able to swim longer alongside his strength.
21:20 Mario's jump is so high here that you can't see where you'll land lol
hot take: Super Mario 64 DS isn't a remake it's a different game that takes place in the same location of Super Mario 64 somewhere in the future
17:35 the camera controls significantly better in this than the original. The L button sets the camera to the player’s perspective and overall camera movement was improved to compensate for the controls
It's a good remake but the controls really hinders it.
I am surprised you didn't talk about Luigi's Useless walking on water ability and also the only time characters were needed in a level besides 100% sort of is the character switches but with multiplayer as long as you have that character it's fine.
64 DS is interesting to look at when taking in the missions because aside from the repeats from the OG game, there are some that clearly have thought put into them, like the dev team knew that there were some of OG 64's missions that were kind of stinkers and replaced them with something else.
But they're kind of overshadowed by how many missions they just turn Super Mario 64 into Donkey Kong 64 in constantly needing to change what character you are just to get the thing. Not to mention that the NEW new content they add in for mini levels are kinda... eh?
2:04 I know what it is, just get 150 stars, play all the minigames at least once, as Wario get 100 lives and then go to the courtyard, Toad will be there and say something about a castle secret, head to the main yard, then fire at that wall, it'll break and you'll have a boss fight with Petey Pirhana, beat him and Waluigi is unlocked.
If it controlled like the original it would be perfect
The camera is definitely improved. It no longer has 4 positions but can be adjusted around the character at will.
You can do that in the original with Mario mode. Press R, then C Down, and you're good to go.
@@fictionalmediabully9830 Mario cam centers the camera behind Mario at all times (or tries to) so the functionality isn't quite the same but it still helps
I didn't finish 64DS due to the multiple characters gimmick. It didn't take long for me to grow confused and frustrated, likely the result of the arbitrary changes. I've finished the original game a lot as a kid, and it's still a favourite of mine.
She Super Mario on my 64 till I DS
yo its sonic
I grew up playing Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, I did enjoy the additional content the DS remake had, but I think I still prefer the N64 original, thinking about it now the challenges that only required certain characters does make it difficult for it's own good. Why can't all the characters use all the power ups? In the N64 original Mario was able to do that with all power ups, Donkey Kong 64 suffered from some of the same issues which is understandable. Don't you think that The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have a similar issue when it comes to comes to the Korok Seeds? There were some areas in Super Mario 64 DS that made it easy and some that made it hard, the hard part was the rabbits.
I always say it's an entirely different game, just with a remade map and levels
its like Los Santos in GTA:SA vs Los Santos in GTAV.
it's technically the same world, it's just been updated.
it's an entirely different game, just using the same setting.
Yes and no. That would be my answer
In middle school me and the boys probably put $100 into Mario 64 multiplayer. Color my surprise when you said it wasn't a focus lol but I understand that it is comparatively a small mode in terms of features.
It’s Mario Time.
I liked the new levels they added for unlocking Mario and Luigi. I really liked the stereo audio puzzle in the Luigi level.
The Mario head was always supposed to be a tech demo so it being changed to a drawing has nothing to do with power but solely to do with showing off the new touch screen. It was Nintendo’s first touch screen handheld and the hey wanted something to show it off just like how you could manipulate Mario in the original. It was a launch title after all
The controls arent as bad as youre making them out to be, this is a good remake
Great vid! I bought a DS day one with 64DS and was determined to complete it with the touchscreen. I really didn't like the plastic nub on the strap, so I did it with the stylus. Imagine how awkward that was...
Actually, only the final bowser boss requires you to be Mario. You're naturally going to the first time from him being better than Yoshi, in addition to being the only one who can throw Bowser at the time. But Bowser 3 is the only Bowser stage that forces you to be Mario.
Absolutely not this is a decent remake.
I grew up with 64DS, I got used to the controls as a kid but I will say the characters are . . . Meh, making mario a middle ground, luigi taller jumping but slower and making wario faster but short jumping could be cool. Wario could have his shoulder dash attack (which could make him do farther distances when jumping) and luigi could still have his spin. I feel mario could've gotten some sort of power too, maybe a roll, which is silly but if we look at it, it would be neat for all of them having some sort of physical power. Yoshi is good as is imo as hes just a starting character, Peach if she was added should have been 100% OP with her dress power like Mario Bros 2 and maybe attacks with her parasol (if it was even made yet).
The controls are indeed a big thing holding back 64DS with level designs and such being nitpicks in comparison.
I hope they do a HD remake of this when Switch 2 comes around because I feel it would be awesome if they did. Ocarina of Time sorta got the HD remake with the 3DS remake. It's odd Mario 64 was left out in this regard.
HD Mario 64 DS on Switch 2 as a launch title if it happens to launch on Mar10 day ... come on Nintendo! Do you hate money? :P
Honestly, I still need to finish my copy. I forget where I left off, but I mostly remedied the controls by holding the trigger button that centers the camera behind the character at all times.
0:59: _Bros._ is a written abbreviation, pronounced _Brothers._
I thought it was good for what it was. The run button really threw me off at first but then it became natural for me. My opinion its pretty solid
You can use Luigi and Wario on the first two Bowser fights. But for Yoshi, you’d have to wait until Bowser spawns a Mario hat with his fire breath.
Only after you beat the first two with Mario.
i hate mario
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE

Same ngl
Damn that's edgy
Definition of no childhood
I know I'm in the minority, but I actually prefer the DS remake, mostly because of the much better camera, the analog mod fixes all problems I could have with this version, I was never into speedrunning so I'm not someone who was playing 64 to pull crazy precise moves
If super mario, then only bros!
Mario 64 DS is a decent remake I will say but the only thing ruin the gameplay is the controls DS it's not build for this game because the main selling about Mario 64 is a analog stick and the DS doesn't have a analog stick and weirdly enough they add run button in the remake I think the reason Nintendo doing this at the first place is to show the DS 3D limitations other than just a touching gimmick for this hardware
You couldn’t have designed a more enticing thumbnail for me
Nope. It’s a great remake but, it was on the wrong system. Super Mario 64 needs a SUPER REMAKE!!!
yes
Damn
Control wise yes, content wise no
It's Mario Time
Meep. 24:00 (Wooow! Didn’t expect that! That’s surprising now that i think about it since almost everyone thought that Waluigi would be the 5th guy. Pretty cool info!)
No, just hard controls
Thanks for the bedtime story Mz. Zzzzzzz...
No
Yes, because the game has a run button. Completely ruins it.
Regardless of this game’s flaws, I think this game could be remade the right way for the switch or whatever new console releases
Super Mario 64 DS is mediocre.
The visual looks disgusting.
Yes it is, despite extra contents, the control is worse, the visual are worse, the vibrant green grass around Bob-Omb Battlefield is now yellowed, the resolution pixilated. I cannot stand it.
Super Mario 64 in general is a god awful game the remake is no better
Mods
@ ?
Play SM64 romhacks, doofus.
If the control's would be normal like SM64 then it'd be sweet b7t I couldn't play DS because of that reason with this game.
