    In this video I compare 2 of the new camping tents from Terra Nova Equipment. The Wild country panacea 2 and the Terra Nova Northern Lite 2. But are identical in design but the materials and specifications are quite different. But does that matter?

    Nice break down of two tents side by side. We don't get enough of these close up videos showing the features and details of tents.
    I love that more brands are going for the zip in the bottom corner like MSR, it's one of those little things that makes a difference to the livability of a tent.

    Love the Northern lite 2 but Terra Nova are out of stock at present. But today I looked on line and Outdoor in Hathersage had two in stock with the same 20% off. I nipped up and bagged one. I've ordered a Panacea footprint as it's identical to the Northern lite one. I think this will be my dream tent. Great review.

    Hmmm I have to say, this tent look super solid!
    I think its probably the best 1-2 person Terra nova tent (Southern Cross 2 is overpriced and not worth the money in my opinion, Pioneer is good but not as solid). I sold my Helm 2 as its was a bit bulky to carry, 3kg with footprint and a bit too much for few days backpacking trips but this Northern Lite 2 is really cool! The fact that you can also use trekking poles to make it proper boom proof - love it!
    I got Luxe Hex Peak v4a tipi for solo just now as its much cheaper as well but maybe one day will get this Terra Nova tent to use with my daughter as well etc if I can ever afford buying and justify keeping long term lol
    I actually like it better then any other Helleberg or Durston X-Mid 1/2.

    Thank you so much for this video. As someone who is just getting into camping, having this comparison of why TN are pricier is really helpful. I’ve got a Helm 1 and a Helm 3 and love them. At the moment, I fall into the “weekend warrior” camp and so Wild Country is perfectly good enough for my needs, probably better than I need!
    Your explanation allows me to understand the differences - if you know anything about road bikes, it sounds like the difference between 105 and Dura Ace and I’m definitely a 105 guy!

    I finally got a big boy tent and you can definitely feel the difference in materials. Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Bikepacking tent was $150 off at REI right now. I had a naturehike before this. Still a good tent though.

    Great video Paul, I was looking at these tents, but i ended up ordering the older Wild Country Helm 2 compact, got a great deal including the footprint. If the Helm 2 turns out to be too small, i don't think it will, then i'll look at one of these palaces.

  • @karlgreene2177

    The Northern Lite is £290 dearer so I would go for the Panacea.

  • @RussellBaker

    Thanks Paul for about the only reviews online so far. I've a Helm2 Compact, but being a big guy (nearly 6ft3) whilst I could fit inside no problems, I found the doors to be a little small and the venting lacking a bit, to the point I'd use a tarp over the Helm so I could leave the tops of the doors open on wet nights. I took a look at the Panacea 2 in a shop at the weekend and it addresses those shortfalls, along with a lot larger vestibule area. I ordered one and it arrived today, I suspect that they will be out of stock soon!

      @steviesteve750 Год назад

      Russell, I'm in same position - sold my Helm 2 for pretty much the same reason, very small / low doors and a right pain when setting up your bed etc. Have you got your yet, and what's your verdict?

    • @RussellBaker
      @RussellBaker Год назад

      @@steviesteve750 it's arrived, haven't had chance to use it yet, possibly next weekend. In the meantime I've obtained the footprint for it, thought it best to jump early as the Helm 2 one was a bugger to get hold of. The store I bought it from had a Helm 2 next to it on display so I was able to do a proper like-for-like. In summary by doing away with the second pole needing to connect to the ground on the Helm2 , its allowed them to alter the porch area I guessed based on "I wish it did this type feedback" One thing that I noticed on inspection is that the knuckle joints on the pole have a hole on one side so that they could tie the elastic cord inside the pole sections, this means you should be careful putting the poles together so that the knuckles in the poles face down to stop any water collecting in them.

    The panacea is a great little low level summer basecamp tent on an budget, good vestibule and head space and it opens up nicely in summer for good ventilations and views.

    Hi Paul great breakdown cheers for sharing. Watched a while a go, revisited as I'm looking at tents again as we head closer to xmas. I am looking to purchase a wild Country/terranova tent with my main priority being stability in wind and rain. The 2 tents I can justify buying at present are the pioneer 2 and the Panacea 2. Noted difference in price, weight, materials and size. I know the Panacea can incorporate trekking poles to aid stability (and doubling up on poles). Just wondering if anyone has experience with both and know if either would fair better in 40 mph winds. Cheers chris

    • @PaulMessner

      I’ve not used the pioneer. The panacea is very robust with the trekking poles but it is a bit heavy and bulky.

    Was wondering if I could use the walking pole trick with my Nature hike Mongar 2 which has a similar pole layout, just tried it and it works not perfect but significantly more rigid. Useful if an unexpected storm blows up.

    Was just wondering if you know what can be done when a tent fly goes “sticky”?
    I have a Terra Nova tent that I bought about 5 years ago and have only used a handful of times. I dug it out to use at the weekend and the fly was stuck to itself and I had to almost rip it apart. Terra Nova said nothing can be done & they can’t replace it because it is a discontinued pattern. I can’t believe I spent so much money on a tent that is actually expected to degrade.
    Do you happen to know if there is any way of re-proofing/repairing it?
    Any advice much appreciated.

    • @CazSmith
      @CazSmith Год назад +1

      Odd that. They can last decades usually. Maybe it got covered in tree resin during a camp and caused that. Stick it in a bucket with some reproofer after giving it a soak in some Nikwax cleaner

    • @wad6216
      @wad6216 Год назад

      You may not have dried it out properly, sill Nylon absorbs water a lot and it takes a fair bit of drying out. Leaving a damp tent in a tight storage bag will run it. Even if you think its dry it sometimes isn't with Nylon. Stick any tent on the washing line for a day after use and even chuck it in the spare room loose for a few days too just to be extra sure its bone dry on pack up.

    Who needs a Terra Nova tent at £630 when the Chinese version costs £130, how many people actually go camping in storms? Sure the materials are better quality but not £500 pounds worth of better quality. I feel it’s disingenuous to tell people otherwise. If Terra Nova didn’t realise their tents were overpriced they wouldn’t have released a cheaper version of their own tent to compete with Naturehike.

    • @tobywinyard1106

      The reason is there is a difference. For many of us, the cheaper is fine, but for many the more expensive makes all the difference. Horses for courses. It comes down each of us if the price is worth the difference
