Of everything I saw in this video, the grappling hook (4:53 or somewhere around then) is what really grabbed my attention. That is a GREAT item idea for a cart racer. Imagine it in Mario Kart - you know that moment of panic you feel when you see an item and just KNOW you're about to be screwed over in so many ways? Imagine if a grappling hook just attached to your rear bumper with little to no warning. (Maybe a quick "kchik-thunk" sound cue where the "kchik" is your cue to get the HELL out of the way would help.) The user is yanked forward to your position and then you get to engage in the time-honored tradition of Crash the Shit Out Of Each Other. It's just such a perfect and beautiful way to make your friends hate you. I love it.
The issue with Mario Kart; at least when I was playing 8 (don't know about other titles) is that there are too many attacking items and too few items giving you a boost. Meaning that you have to slow down other racers to get ahead. What happens is that 12-3 are attacking each other and slowing down each other, while the first and sometimes second player speeds ahead. What the game needs is more items that gives the pack an overall faster speed than the leaders, so more items that gives people boost than items that slows people down. So if the grappling hook gave you more of a boost than it slows down the racer you grab onto, that would improve it. They should add back items like the giant mushroom and chain chomp, that also gives you boost (but can also attack). It's also made worse with the coins, as the pack constantly lose coins due to the attacks and the leader keeps all coins most of the time. It was a feature they shouldn't bring back, because it does not balance the game.
It's a shame you didn't try the time trials, because you could've added a whole 3 to 4 minutes on another big complaint: Veronica Voltage. She's basically Lego Racer's T.T. and I mean that in every way because she takes every shortcut and cuts as many corners as possible. But if you want to get her Lego set, you have to beat her in every single track. Yippee.
The lego racers' car customization is literally the best part in the game for me, character customization was also good. I wish modern lego games had the building parts of the old lego games, and other cart racing games should include this too, it may seem stupid, but at least putting a GTA-styled car customization wouldn't hurt.

That gameboy colour opening was awesome. If I didn't already love you that would be a good reason to right there. And the editing was great, but that's to be expected. YOU TALENTED DEVIL YOU.
Addressing the criticism of where the warps drop you: yes, the warp exit placement can be bad. You know what you're supposed to do? Not warp. You can actually make much better time by using the level 3 boost instead of the level 4 boost. No, that's not an excuse for poor warp placement in general, but I think the devs did it on purpose to teach you that you can't rely on a magical cheat teleport. You actually have to learn to drive. The time trials were BRUTAL. Veronica Voltage has perfect AI, and it takes serious skill to beat her. Beating her on every track and unlocking her character and car parts was the finest achievement of my young self.
Damian Freeman Ew, what a douche thing to correct someone on. For some reason I pictured a cute girl saying "Legos" and some one responding "For crying out loud, 'Legos' Is not a word. It's 'Lego' and 'Lego Bricks".
I miss being young and playing this game while rob zombie's sinister urge played in the background Also whp remembers breaking the pyramid to a hidden track
Yeah, drifting is pretty important considering how curvy most tracks are in kart-racing games, that's one of the reasons the Sonic and All-Stars racing games have become some of my favorite games in this genre, the drifting is not only smooth, but gives you an instant boost to get ahead the longer you can hold one.
Oh how I used to love playing Sonic R on the PC...key words being "used to", but playing it nowadays has its nostalgic charm which will never go away for me. :3
Woah, I regret not watching all your vids sooner. Is that RHYTHM HEAVEN?!!?!?!?!!!! Was that outro music in one of your vids as well?! Wow, gosh Brutalmoose that's pretty awesome.
I'm going to be completely honest. Most of these complaints would matter if there was only one thing you forgot. The game isn't designed for Multiplayer, it's designed for Singleplayer and just has a Multiplayer option. It's obvious once you see that it actually has to be unlocked. Once you realize that Lego Racers is a Singleplayer Cart Racer you understand that most of the problems make a lot more sense. The game isn't supposed to be played with friends, it's supposed to be played as a fun way to shave some free time off your hands.
I think I played Lego Racers a few times within the Rocket Racer's Arcade at Legoland Windsor... Then I picked up Lego Racers 2 - which is also quite fun. This time, you have an arrow guiding you to each checkpoint, which you have to hit if you want to do a legitimate lap. Each track is also quite a nice variant on the levels you find in the campaign mode - Lego Island, Dino Island, Mars, the Arctic Circle, and Xalax, the racing planet - some of my favourite races happen within Xalax because the tracks can be super-entertaining with lots of moving parts and loops. Each race was frantic and had a lot of cool paths to take. You also needed to find Golden Bricks to unlock the boss race in each world. Lego Island didn't have a boss race per se, more 1-on-1 tutorial races that set you up for the real deal, so there are four boss races (Sam Sinister for Dino Island gives you the super-boost upgrade, some random mech on Mars gives your car a shield generator, because destructible cars are a thing, the Abominable Snowman in the Arctic Circle gives your car extra-grippy tires, and Rocket Racer gives you a trophy). As mentioned in the long bracket, cars are now destructible. If you get hit with a powerup, you're going to lose some bricks. Lose all the bricks on your car and you start running - but don't worry. Driving through laser fences repairs your car/gives you your car back. Boost is also collected separately, and most of the powerups you'll find are weapons - such as the Homing Missile, Tornado, Thunderball, Drill-nose Missile, bouncy-tire-thing and Destruct-a-brick. Custom car construction is also much improved, as is character creation - and you can unlock new parts by going through the campaign.
Goodness it sure took a long time for the warp to reappear. It wasn't until Mod Nation Racers that they even put something like that in (It isn't EXACTLY worth it in Mod Nation Racers)
I never played the first lego racers game, but did genuinely enjoy Lego Racers 2. It looks like it fixed most of the issues that the first game had, and the hub world was actually pretty nice to drive around.

That gameboy colour opening was awesome. If I didn't already love you that would be a good reason to right there. And the editing was great, but that's to be expected. YOU TALENTED DEVIL YOU.
The funny thing is he is more full of shit, since he says heavier cars in the game were faster than lighter cars.
For crying out loud, "Legos" Is not a word. It's "Lego" and "Lego Bricks".
Tell someone who cares, fucker.
Damian Freeman I've called them legos all my life, even the spell checker on chrome accepts legos as a real word. Get yo ass wooped.
Damian Freeman Ew, what a douche thing to correct someone on. For some reason I pictured a cute girl saying "Legos" and some one responding "For crying out loud, 'Legos' Is not a word. It's 'Lego' and 'Lego Bricks".
Finally, someone gets it!
Zadamanim well actually Lego is a shortened word in danish that means "play well" so legos is an incorrect pronunciation
I will most likely do a video on Lego Island 2 just because of how much it's been requested. I'm not sure when I'll get around to it, though.
THIS GAME WAS MY CHILDHOOD OMFG
I miss being young and playing this game while rob zombie's sinister urge played in the background
Also whp remembers breaking the pyramid to a hidden track
the nostalgia is killing me, I remember playing this game with my siblings, taking turns beating races.
I want to play this again to relive my childhood!
why is this so much funnier than the new episodes?
Woah, I regret not watching all your vids sooner. Is that RHYTHM HEAVEN?!!?!?!?!!!! Was that outro music in one of your vids as well?! Wow, gosh Brutalmoose that's pretty awesome.
This was that game in my childhood.
holy. fucking. shit. i grew up with this and completly forgot about it...
i remember it being pretty bad though...
Spot on review. I just replayed it recently for the nostalgia, and you said everything I was thinking while playing.
This game was my childhood. Loved it!!!
Im having the biggest nostalgia trip right now.
This holds up well 6 and a half years later.
I didn't have a PS1, or even a PS2 for a little while, but I'd go over to my neighbor's house and play.
Thanks! The version I reviewed was actually was the PC version. I had it on N64 when I was a kid, though.
Idk why but the face Ian makes at 1:09 is adorable to me
i love diddy kong racing. i still play it with my sister! it was the first game we had that could be played with someone else
Enjoying it! It has cut my Reddit time down significantly.
Seeing the Crash Team Racing bits made me very happy
