THRIPS: How To Identify, Treat, and Prevent Thrips on Houseplants

- Thrips are minute, slender insects
with fringed wings and unique
asymmetrical mouthparts. Different
thrips species feed mostly on plants
by puncturing and sucking up the
contents.
The life cycle consists of five stages:
egg, larval, prepupal, pupal and
adult.
Sticky traps: These
traps are helpful for controlling
adult thrips.
Spray: If an infestation
is out of control, you will have to
spray with an insecticide.
Today’s video is definitely one I did not want to have to make but I decided since I am going through the struggles of houseplant pests, I’d show you all the steps I take to ensure my plants survival. Thrips are probably the worst plant pest I have personally experienced. It’s definitely better to catch them earlier in their life cycle before they turn into flying adults. I hope this video gives you some insight on how to treat your own plants for pests! Thumbs up the video if you also hate thrips! Don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss a new video!💚🪴

Girl.! That intro 😭
You are hilarious 👏🏻
Ugh! You and Sarah both been dealing with these devil bugs 😑
I’ve been waiting, prepared myself for when they make their way into my collection because I KNOW it’s just a matter of time 🥴
Great video 🙌🏻
Spider mites are the one thing that I constantly have. But I’ll take them over thrips ANY day based on what I have heard about them!
Thank you!!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩
Omg I hope you never have to deal with them by some miracle!!! Same girl! I’ll take spider mites too! Hahaha
Thanks for showing them up close--very helpful!
Thank you for watching! I’m glad I could help!🥰🥰🥰💚💚💚
The intro was cute... tragic but cute!! I spray everything with a alcohol water mix. I mostly have issues with mealy bugs. I think I'm gonna get some lady bugs when it gets warmer.
Thank you kellie!🥰💚
This is why I spray my plants, I’m terrified of getting an infestation.
It’s definitely good to stay on top of them! I started slacking for a little bit but I will get through it!☺️
found thrips on BOTH my monstera plants today😩😩😩. this is my first real pest problem besides dealing with gnats. I'm getting some deadbug first thing tomorrow!
Omg nooo😭😭😭 yes definitely get that! It’s worked sooo well for me! I haven’t had them come back!🙌🏼🙌🏼
the new leaf on my anthurium looks funky so I will be keeping an eye out
The intro though 👌🔥- chef's kiss 😂
🥲🥲🥰🥰 THANK YOU!!! I was really excited about it 💚💚💚💚 made my day you noticed and commented about it!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you Kayla for all the super helpful information!! I’m scared to check for pests!! 😫 it’s so so difficult to find because they are Soo tiny! 😫 i have been spraying my collection with neem and dead bug brew for the knats .. and of course the problem continues!! I’ve got my sticky traps
Oh gosh, I am so glad you showed that! I’m terrified of getting them!
Definitely! Gotta show the good and the bad 🥰
Thanks for just great content...I always learn a lot by watching 😍😍😍😍😍
I’m so glad to hear that! Thank you for your support!🥰🥰💚💚
Hi, Thanks so much.
I’ve just been keeping mine that have thrips in lockdown in my bathroom. 😑 Also someone take the scissors away from you lol jk! 😂
😂😂😂😂😂 hahahaha no one can stop me!😈 I’m running out of quarantine zones for these thrippy plants 😅
Great thrips video! I definitely recommend a systemic for your soil. Attacking every area without having to ditch the soil on everu plant. Plus it would act as a preventative for your plants that haven't been attacked yet. If you go that route you just add a bit more every 3 to 6 months. Good luck with your battle, it's inevitable for all of us with huge collections.
Ahh great advice!!! Do you have any recommendations for a good systemic? Thank you!!!🤩🤩
Thrips are my biggest fear with my plants 😰😰
They’re the worstttt😭😭😭
You are so funny! So glad I found your channel. Thrips just seem to love Philodendron, ugh! I am fighting a never-ending battle with spider mites but I think we've at least reached a "live and let live" agreement between one another, haha.
🤣🤣🤣😍🥰🥰thank you!!! I feel like I’m starting to get more comfortable in front of the camera finally 😂😂 omg spider mites ugh if they’re in small batches.. it’s not so bad.. a whole bunch though?! Lawddd 😭😭😭😭 i hope you win the battle! Haha
Thanks for watching and I’m so glad you found me too! 🥰🥰💚💚💚💚💚
Beautiful Houseplants
Thank you so much!!!🥰🥰

This is the worst I’ve had them also! 😭😭😭 we got this! 💪🏼
Hello from Puerto Rico!!! First timer on your channel and just subscribed. My channel is in Spanish but can be captioned. Good info… thank you!! 🙋🏼♀️🪴💚🌿🐩
Good luck with your battle! I’m going through the same thing. 😭
Aww I hope the best for you and your plants also!!💚💚💚
@@KaylasPlants Thanks!
Never knew there was worse than spidermites until my plants have been attacked by trips. It's some kind of war in my houseplantjungel.
Awesome intro!
Thank you so much!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💚💚💚
I found them today right during my work hours…girl, i took off an hour and flew to strangers for all the remedies!
Oh no! I hope you’re able to get rid of those suckers!
I thought I had thrips and the next day I mixed up some spray and opened the tent only to have every flower covered in webs. Turns out it was spider mites. Damn, now to clean and start over.
Aw dang that’s awful :(
I just found my first ever Thrip buggers on my huge Philodendron Selloum this am! I'm freaking out and instead of having the nice day I had planned I spent it working on my plant lol! It is a HUGE plant so my husband had to carry it to the shower where I sprayed the leaves and then some. I ordered a systemic granular treatment on line. I'll be putting it in the dirt, then watering the soil. The insecticide will travel from roots to leaves and when any bug bites it'll be dead! Much easier than weekly spraying on such a huge plant. I haven't seen it on anything else. Let us know how your plants are doing!
Oh no! Ugh they’re soooo annoying! Luckily I haven’t seen any come back!! 🎉🎉🎉 I hope you are able to get rid of them! I will definitely do an update sometime!💚💚
Also I can’t wait for warmer weather so I can take my plants outside more easily for pest treatments
It definitely makes it easier outdoors! It’s been so cold here lately I sprayed them so fast and went right back inside hahaha
Hi Kayla! Not going to ask how you are doing! UGH!
BLOWTORCH, BLOWTORCH, BLOWTORCH! LOL!
Do you know which plant started the infestation? I always quarantine new plants to the upstairs bathroom. They get sprayed with Neem oil, alcohol, peppermint soap and water for 2 weeks. If I do not see any pest, they join the rest of the plant party.
Good luck! Keep fighting the good fight!

😐
I have no idea which plant started it 🥲 I just know I hadn’t been on top of my pest control game like I should have been! I alsooooo am the worst at quarantining my new plants 🤦🏼♀️ I’ve been doing a little bit better about it but I’m thinking maybe my Monstera started it because that is my problem plant and I’m over it. I have pretty much ignored it the past few months so I had it coming. 😭😭
@@KaylasPlants Dang! So sorry! I have 75 plants and it takes a long time to water and expect them for pests! Just deal with it one plant at a time. What does not kill our plants, makes them stronger!
Keep up the good fight!
😎
@@hpeteacher9445 for sure!!!! Luckily a bunch are tiny plants and easy to manage!😅
@@KaylasPlants There you go! Positive thinking!
😁
Aw man. That sucks! Thrip are aweful for the mere fact that they so difficult to spot. Often for me I see the damage long before the actual bug!
You may consider benefitial nematodes for your soil before cutting the roots off. They eat the pupae stage of thrip in the dirt.
Hope ya get them managed ! So disheartening when you discover them, especially in large collections. 💚🌿💚🤞
I’m gonna have to look into those! I was honestly too lazy to deal with the soil and figured it would be easier to treat them all in water. I didn’t move them all to water though cuz I got lazy doing that also. Hahahah
@@KaylasPlants oh I feel that! The laziness is strong with me too 😂
Keeping your plants out of the light is going to weaken the plants, causing them to chemically communicate stress. Thus causing thrips to be more attracted to your plants. The best thing you could possibly do is just leave them where they are and add a large amount of predatory mites. your situation you probably would need about 10,000 mites. This would end your problem overnight as those amount of predatory mites would run out of food by eating all of your thrips. It's worth the money to not have to deal with the stress, and there are other predatory bugs to deal with adult thrips as well. Biological control is the only True control for House plants. Another thing you could do is to add beneficial nematodes which would reduce the chances of thrips coming back and also help to read the soil ofthey're larva and eggs
Bad video can't see anything
Sorry, I tried my best. I used arrows to point things out if you missed them.
@@KaylasPlants Don’t be🤗. I saw it. This is actually a better video than other thrips videos I’ve watched.
