I used a systemic on my outdoor roses whom have been engulfed every year with beetles and aphids, In the last two years I have had zero to none that I can notice! So it works beautifully. I've never used on my indoor plants though. And It doesn't harm the ladybugs that we get every other year. Thanks for sharing, I'm currently battling these critters in my house plants! ugh
Wow this was a super helpful video 👍 I appreciate all the research that went into this topic: I have personally dealt with thrips twice in the last few months and it was so stressful, lost a few plants along the way 😩 . Now I have a better understanding of thrips and how to tackle these pests for future reference
Giving this a swing now since one of my impulsive new plant buys came with thrips. This video is quality stuff though, very informative and presented in an organized, thorough manner. Your research is showing, ty for doing it so I dont gotta
Thrips is same word whether singular or plural. Just a tip :) nice job on the video. Systemics will kill everything whether beneficial or not. Not great if your cat or dog likes to nibble the leaf too
Thank you for posting this video. All my Japanese Hakurei Turnips got damaged this season. Thrips tend to like the roots more than the leaves. It would have been a bountiful harvest if not for these tiny creatures.
Easier than squishing the thrips, which could also harm the tissues of the plant: use painter's tape / masking tape to remove them from plants You can wrap up the pot in cling wrap before showering the plants, that way you can avoid overwatering the plants AND washing larvae etc onto the soil
The best information in video form I have found so far. Thank you for sharing your research with us. Fortunaly for me I being using Captain Jack Dead Bug for awhile after all other things fail, now I'm alternating Captain Jack with Eight Insect Control just in case. Haven't been able to convince my self to introduce bugs. You are also right in saying to cut the leave or part of it as soon as you see damage. Again thanks for doing the research.
Extremely helpful! I definitely have some variety of thrips on my deliciosa and it looks like they were starting to move in on the bird of paradise and now I know how to deal with them, thanks again
I have used the diatomaceous earth product…great stuff… used on my hostas outside when had issues. Yes they were covered in dust and you could see it all over the ground. I wear gloves when I sprinkle it all over the plant and then kinda brush the leaves back and forth to get a good thin coating all over and underneath the leaves. Works great. I have also used Captain dead bug on plants I plan on bringing in my garage to overwinter…geraniums, elephant ears, cannas, uphorbias, ect. Since they are in close proximity to each other and don’t want to spread any thing.
wow these bugs are awful. thanks for the info. This is out of control on all of my house plants. Thank goodness my daughter-in-law saw my infestation when I tried to give thrips to them in a few house plants, too bad I didnt keep treating the issue because I thought it was done.
It's cheaper to toss out the plants than to use expensive nematodes with very limited shelf-life, and results can differ, before you know you keep buying more and more nematodes and not getting anywhere. If you want your tossed out plants back, just get cheap cuttings, they sell them on places like Etsy.
Very informative! Thanks very much for walking us through your process. I am dealing w thrips right now. Thankfully my plants aren't completely infested, only found a couple here and there, but I have seen adults so the possibility is there. Fingers crossed I will be able to irradiate them...going to try a couple of the tips you suggested. Thanks again 👍
I enjoyed your video content, and am an avid plant collector and as well. Kudos to you for making sharable content, as it takes some courage to put yourself out there and create! I myself do not have this kind fo bravery. I think it's important to know that the active ingredient in one of your recommended pesticides: Captain Jack's is Imidicloporid. This is basically a synthetic nicotine, and although that might not sound super dangerous, this chemical becomes pervasive in the environment- soil & water- when used as a pesticide, and some studies indicate it can persist for up to three years or more in soil that has been treated with it. It is the number one toxic pesticide that is killing bees. It is easily taken up by plants into their tissues (reason why it is called a "systemic pesticide"), and can even end up in the flower & pollen of plants. Because of these things I would not recommend using it. Please caution anyone who is considering it, as many people compost their dirt when they re-plant houseplants, and are unaware of these facts. Plus, it is dangerous to inhale or have skin or mucus membrane contact with (eyes, nose, lungs). Blessings, please be safe, and good luck with your channel. I only hope to inform, and not wreck your joy in content creation. Show less Show less
Currently dealing with this. From what I can add is that while I don't know where they came from, the monsteras were the first to be attacked and and first to go.
This is an excellent video. Thank you for doing all the research and for sharing everything. When you did the Neem oil, was it toxic to the beneficial insects? You didn't say if it affected them. I have not had any houseplant pests yet, but I'm just getting started and I know I probably will someday. Spider mites seem to be a big problem too. I would really like for you to do a similar video on them. They seem to be really common. I just subscribed to your channel and have some other videos of yours to watch now too. Thank You again. 🙂
Question about Nematodes- would they live in orchid bark & spagnum miss mix? I currently have thrips and am fungus knats (springtime fun) - I added springtails and they have helped by competing with the knats, and am using a spray and oil solution for the thrips, nematodes sound like a great addition to keep a healthy orchid colony!
Great question! No thrips have returned :) plants are growing very well, and I have started using Captain Jack’s as part of my method to get rid of spidermites as well!
Thanks for the information. I just ordered some blue sticky traps from Amazon, already have Captain Jacks I’m getting ready just in case. I’ve never looked for thrips only spider mites. I’m a newby.
I had them over a yr, I think they’re gone then pop back up 😢 hope this helps...oh, never saw any adults. Actually, they’re very very small, like your larvae/adult pic, those look huge
I had 20+ plants get badly eaten up by some bug within a week, I have never once seen any bugs on them, but the damage is so apparent. :/ I've been coating every plant in the captain jacks concentrate EVERY day trying to get rid of them.. most my plants already had a insecticide, so I'm extra sad about this. :/ Hoping they go away soon, I miss buying plants..
Can they have a dust like look? I was told if you have dusty leaves with white, but they feel gritty then it’s probably spider mites? I have that but the leaf damage looks very thrippy
So happy it was helpful! I definitely recommend treating them all. It’s a lot of work but it will be worth it. Best of luck, I know how frustrating it can be to find thrips on your plants! You can do it 👍
@@SloansCommonGround alll? I have like 2 expensive plants and I don’t wanna kill ‘em but also don’t want them infested, if I treat them, do the have a reaction?
I'm 50/50 on the Beneficial Nematodes, the have ONLY got 1 star ratings in the past few years, seems everyones arrived dead and never worked. Not sure if I want to risk another $50, I'm already $350 down trying to get rid of these bugs
Thank you for all the information. I think a plant I got from Armstrong Nursery (a supposed professional nursery) introduced them into my new rose garden that I barely even got to enjoy. I'm just now finding out what they are though. All I could see were my flowers looking horrible. I didn't know about the soil and I think I will treat it with Sevin bug dust. That seems to work on all manner of soil pests.
Thank you for this video I am currently dealing with a massive outbreak on about 40 plants. I had no idea what was happening until it was out of control. I plan to release some predator bugs in my house along with some of your suggestions. Ready for war. Lol. Also your beautiful. Thanks again
I saw that but I think it's not. But check out 25:32 on the right side of the screen!! Where she says, "Captain Jacks is a spray. And it's wet...." Eeek!! I watch the whole video very closely; it was done quite well! Thank you, Sloan!
I saw one on my luxurians just now, and it jumped and I was like oh HELL no its a thrip and chucked the whole thing in trash. now im side eyeing all my other plants

The most helpful video I watched on RUclips to help me get rid of thrips on my plants. Many thanks for doing the research on our behalf.
I’m so glad it was helpful for you! It’s all the info I wished I could find on RUclips when I originally found thrips in my collection!

This is an amazingly detailed video!
Thank you!
Excellent Video, Putting all of this information together is very much appreciated. I am in a battle now with thrips, they love roses too.

Great video and super informative. Thanks for sharing. I have been using my tears to combat them.
I used my fair share of tears as well 😂
Thanks. This was a great overview.
I'm so glad the information was helpful to you!
Very thorough video! Thank you!!! This was very very informative and helpful

Use bonded systemic granules or caption jacks deadbug
Both are inexpensive and both completely get rid of thrips

Doesn’t the neem oil and Captain Jacks hurt the nematodes?

Best thrip video! Ah thank you!
You’re so welcome! I’m happy it was helpful!
Sloan, what are your results after using captain Jack's in terms of months after. Did thrip return? How was your plant growth after use?

It looks like the link to the beneficial nematods doesn't work any more...can you share again? Thanks so much :)
Unfortunately I can’t find them on Amazon anymore!
Thank you! This video was very helpful! I just found thrips on a few of my plants :( but I'm treating all of them just incase I missed any.

They work better and quicker if you open the the pack and spread them out.1 packet per 5 gal of soil don't waste them.
I think I'm in love
If I knew the loved monsteras I might not have bought 3! Albo Thai and Regular. 😭 now every video is telling me 😂
💚
Thank you for this for real ❤️ but I’m alsooooo crawling inside right now. 😭
How’s your treatment going?
Thank you for this video I am currently dealing with a massive outbreak on about 40 plants. I had no idea what was happening until it was out of control. I plan to release some predator bugs in my house along with some of your suggestions. Ready for war. Lol. Also your beautiful. Thanks again
Thrips like blue sticky traps.
Too bad, Captain Jacks is not sold in Canada.
Is that a thrip on your right sleeve? 😅
I saw that but I think it's not. But check out 25:32 on the right side of the screen!! Where she says, "Captain Jacks is a spray. And it's wet...." Eeek!!

A what!? Oh god, no, not again! *self immolates*
lol they are so tiny there’s no way you could see one that far away
Did you/anyone else end up trying DE for thrips? & if so did it work??? I am in Canada & can't get basically any pesticides :(
I have a good friend that used DE to get rid of her thrips and it worked well for her!
Neoseiulus cucumeris
wow your so beautiful, need to subscribe!
