    After years of purchasing products and trial and error, I've finally found what works for me. I use a mix of systemic insecticide + a foliar spray applied with a pressurized spray bottle. None of these pest control products are sponsored btw!

    An AMAZING product for killing fungus gnat larvae is “Mosquito Bits”. It’s natural, non toxic and has to be given regularly (every couple of weeks) but works sooooooo well.

    This is such a great video!! When I first got into bringing plants into my space I didn’t have any pest for about a year or so but the longer I have plants and the more I get I started fighting for my life 😭 against fungus gnats and spider mites. I was a neem oil kind of girl and i over did it and BURNED my plants 🥲 so yea I’m really glad you gave these tips and tricks because I didn’t know about the photosensitive. I just cooked my plants 😅😅

    Thank you for taking the fear out of treating the pest problem. As you said pests are part of the plant journey and once we accept that it becomes much more tolerable.

    I've had houseplants for 5 years now and luckily I haven't had to deal with a lot of pests. I did get spider mites on my calathea a couple of years ago and I was so scared and disgusted that I ran out with it and swung it to the trash bin. Ever since that i've been super scared and paranoid of pests.
    I dunno your way of calmly explaining and showing how to do it kind of put my mind at ease. Now I know what to do and maybe it's not that serious😂😂 (i was definitely traumatized by the spider mites) Thanks Benji ✨✨

      please don't use systemic insecticide for fungus gnats... buy beneficial nematodes or diatomaceous earth. nuking your substrate with harsh chemicals is going to backfire.

    I had a devastating thrip infestation on mainly my Monsters Deliciosas this past fall and I tried everything but ended up having to resort to the systemic granules and they worked! I try to use them as a last resort just because it's a systemic and freaks me out, haha. But also because pests can become tolerant of it after constant exposure. It has worked for me though the one time I needed to use them and I'm forever grateful! For spidermites, I have a 70% alcohol spray bottle I found at either Walgreens or Walmart but I use it to just spray all over any plant that has spidermites like alocasia. I did find that some plants in the calathea family are very sensitive to alcohol like the white fusion, triostar, and beauty star so alcohol wipes are a better alternative at spot treatment! Just what I do. Thank you, Benji!! I always look forward to your videos!! 😊🌿

      Hi im curious, what about systemic pesticides freak you out? Im new to the houseplant game so i dont really know what the risks are with different pesticides

    • @bencardenas11
      @bencardenas11 2 года назад +5

      @@AsianRainbows Hey! 👋 For me, it just freaks me out because I have to make sure I wear gloves when using it so that it doesn't come in contact with my skin. I just have to be aware of what I touch, like a doorknob, or something someone else could touch and then touch their mouth or eye or what have you. I also have two doggos so I gotta make sure the plants are out of reach so they don't either eat the treated plant that was initially pet friendly (Maranta, etc) or having them lick the soil because one of them is a Basset Hound and will eat everything, hahaha. I guess it doesn't freak me out, I just have to be really aware of my actions when using systemic granules. I hope that all makes sense, haha.

    Hi Benji! Such a timely video. I use Neem oil but had pests attacking my new growth on my draecena. Neem just didn't cut it and cinnamon didn't help either. I finally conquered it with 1/3 rubbing alcohol and 2/3 water in a spray bottle. I had to spray everyday as the new growth opened up but it worked and my top growth isn't chewed up and looks great.

      Bonide is the brand name. The houseplant systemic contains the active ingredient Imadocloprid. It’s not harmful as long as you wear gloves and wash your hands after use.

  • @ashakabeta
    @ashakabeta Год назад

    I'm dealing with my first pest outbreak, aside from finding a mealie bug here and there on my hoyas.. I found adult thrips recently on my Hoya pubilcalyx. 😱😭 ALL of my houseplants are together, so I have to treat them all, as they are suddenly rapidly declining. I have gone years with no issues. My calathea, stromanthe.. my delicate plants have all been so happy, lush, gorgeous... Now this! I appreciate your soothing voice as much as the good information. It really helps so much.
    I went to a plant nursery yesterday, talked to an expert. He told me to use the bonide granules, along with Neem oil spray, plus recommended I dust lightly with the diatomaceous earth I have already.
    I'm very chemically sensitive, and terrified of this process! I don't have gloves or disposable spoons, cups. The warnings on that stuff are very strong and soooo scary!! May be fatal if it comes in contact with skin. Doesn't wash off 💀
    I carefully sprinkled it in using a plastic fork to mix it in with the soil last night. I got all but 2 plants; one being my Hoya obavata..I can't see the soil, so am having difficulty, plus I threw the fork away, thinking I was done. Ugh 😂
    The problems that come with thrips are mighty and I just found them over the weekend.
    For those of us who are stressed so much, your personality is like medicine. I'm subscribing. Thank you.

    Bonide is the best. I use that and have no issues except an occasional spider mite. They hate peppermint oil. If I see webs I spray peppermint oil water and they come running out. Instant death. 😂All spiders hate peppermint oil. I spray my outdoor areas with peppermint water too to control the insane amount of garden spiders spinning their webs at night in SoCal.

    fungus gnats are the bane of my apartment, my plants, and my existence and i could go on about my tried methods to get rid of them but it all boils down to catching them early and not letting them take over before you start treating them, and when you do catch them invading your plants space early on, a good spritz of 1:1 water/hydrogen peroxide onto the top soil and stick a sticky gnat trap in the soil and you’re pretty much good to go

    Howdy Benji! Your plant care content is AMMMM-azing! I actually bought the black pressured spray bottle you use. I have yet to use Neem Oil or any other product on my plants since pest outbreaks was minimal when I had a small collection of green gurrls. Plus, I keep couple plants outdoors in spring/summer for pest control too. My collection is larger now and it would be super helpful to know if you re-use the black pump spray after AzaMax application? Or do you have 2 to keep from residual application from getting into non-infected plants? I prefer to keep 1 pressurized bottle on hand. Could I just wash the basin of spray bottle with soapy water for non-pest control use? There are a couple new things I did learn from this video that I did not know from watching a gazillion other plant vlogger content so muchas gracias!

    Hi- I opened a plant (bird of paradise)when I got it and the wet soil was full of centipedes or millipedes and some squirmy worm things, maybe pot worms or fungus gnat larvae, some kind of round ball eggs. I washed the soil all off and am hoping for the best. I was just too grossed out because if they crawled out of the plant into my apt I wouldn’t be able to sleep! Maybe you have tips on what to do with these things. The worm things wouldn’t die when I doused them in rubbing alcohol. Or maybe there is a calm mindset you can model for me so I’m not overcome with anxiety about creepy crawlers ❤😊

    Im having the most annoying fungus gnat infestation. I put fly paper right next to the infected plant and the amount that collected there is appalling. Ill try that systemic, the my neem oil soray doesnt seem to kill them off 100%

    Is it true that the systemic granules could pose a risk to pets if they decide to nibble on the leaves? That’s my only concern with those 🥺

    In canada we are very limited in what pesticides we can buy, so most systemic pesticides aren’t available. I guess i’ll have to stick to neem oil.
