I love the lighting on your face. The scene. The shot.
I don’t get these people. Sod the cameras! LOOK AT THIS MAN. He’s got stories. Originality. What has this guy seen & done? The good, the bad, the ugly, the boring, ALL OF IT!
All the megapickles in the world can never capture the artistry & life that this man sees in the world. The best lens/sensor combo is the one in your skull.
It is not even possible for you be a ‘loser’. That guy who called you a loser knows nothing about him SELF, let alone the world. You are real. And in a world of fake posers & copyists, realness is everything.
The fake ‘winners’ are actually the real losers. And you are the real winner because you are true to yourself & true to your craft.
You are a genuine living breathing testament to the craft of photography. Your authenticity & workarounds are timeless. Connecting those to some struggling newbies would bring magic. The nostalgia is a delicious bonus. You’re like, the Lovejoy of the photography world.
I’m not a qualified marketing professional by any stretch. But even I can give you some ideas/perspectives.
You’re probably feeling okay-ish & don’t want any hassle. But if you ever have a ‘f**k it’ moment, please let me know how to reach you. I can email you some ideas/perspectives.
    You’re iconic.

I shoot with an old DSLR. If you understand the Exposure triangle, composition and photographing your subject. Please remember that photographer usually has to purchase two of everything. It is easy to get two dslr kit or two aps-c mirrorless kit rather than a full frame.

  • @Digg3r
    @Digg3r Год назад +3

My response is simple, the camera can be simple or it can be all bells and whistles, if you can't use them properly then both may as well be house bricks. I have images from my full frame 5d and my micro 4 thirds em 1 mk 1 (both less than £150) that blow some top spec camera images I have seen clean out of the water. The camera is a tool, if the photographer is equally a tool then the images will reflect that regardless of the spec of the camera. Your equine work is amazing because you understand the camera, it's capabilities and have the knowledge to make amazing images. RUclips is full of keyboard warriors that tend to go out buy the latest gear due to gas and consider themselves pro's yet no doubt shoot in auto and rely on post processing to rectify their f ups. Don't give em the time of day my friend..... Keep up the good work and stay well 😉

Mate, I've just found your channel and I'm starting to get into the world of professional equine photography. I set out to focus on dogs and people but being a horse owner the equine stuff comes naturally. I use older gear and personally hate all the new mirrorless offerings. If your images are good they're good and I really enjoy the content. It's also quite refreshing to see someone using the older gear in a professional capacity on youtube rather than just seeing people use A7iv's and Canon R5's. Keep uploading, I think you'll do well. Gained a new sub from me today for sure. Also a fair point to make is that if the cameras were good when they came out, they still are. The cameras didn't get worse, new cameras got better. That's not the same thing.

I still love using my old 7D. Yeah the dynamic range is not the best, you gotta be careful not to blow the highlights too much with a bright subject but that's usually not a problem.
Canon even put effort making it sound great, and that was a big selling point when they brought it out. And I gotta say it sounds greater than any other camera I've owned.
Thanks for a great video as usual, keep up the good work!

Spent the day today shooting my newly acquired second hand but minty 6D coupled with the old first generation 50mm f1.8 EF lens. Didn't just yet download the pictures, but my last walk around with this 6D coupled with 50mm STM lens was quite excellent. Old DSLR gear is the Christmas we can have every day, since the gear along with lenses is available for joke prices. I own the 5D, in fact 2 copies along with few 1D and 1Ds bodies. Love them all and shoot them regularly. Thanks for a great channel with very meaningful insights.

👍You're right about the 12 megapixel. There's something about those images the new cameras can't get. I think Sony realizes this with cameras like the A7S. I own three 12 megapixel monsters now. The D300S, D700 and the D3S. I can whoop any modern camera with these 3. Solution 1 - Shoot the picture in focus and in perfect exposure for the subject you are expressing. Solution 2 - While another photographer may have to resort to presets in lightroom then poor over 100's of pictures, I'm going through 12 to 36 because I visualized what I needed and usually am grateful I got more than what I needed. (Admittedly I haven't adjusted much from the film days.) Solution 3 - There is software today that upsizes images with great accuracy and all the clarity you think you need. (Note: Most Phone Apps do this on the fly, if people saw what that software was doing they would realize they are shooting 12 megapixels or less-hdr/ai/etc).
Is there a place for higher megapixel cameras? Yes when you know you are going to crop the heck out of the image because it can't be helped. I can shoot anything else with 12 megapixels.
I don't go mirrorless because I'm the type that will go through every image in post and have to do something with it. I already spend too much time behind the desk and not out shooting.
Now I do have this to say. Those who believe they need the new cameras please buy them. They work great. However I can't think of a shot I missed with the 3 cameras I listed above. Furthermore the images from them are great and some are works of art.
I think we can draw an analogy here. I can draw well with even a regular pencil but a mechanical pencil can produce singular lines which can be exact and sharp. I can't make art with just a mechanical pencil but I can produce a blueprint. It's the variation present with a regular pencil held and used at different angles, lead thicknesses, and sharpnesses which allows for the creation of art.

Great thoughts and observations. A relatively famous photographer I was reading about (I honestly don't remember his name) said, "the only people who care about grain in a photograph are other photographers." In my younger days I was hired to shoot large beauty pageants, which were on stage, at night, and lit by various colors of stage lighting. For the first few years I did it with Canon film cameras. Digital came out. I did it all then with a Canon 20, 30 and ultimately a 40D camera. My progression of cameras was each a few years apart; I shot national pageants for many years. No one who hired me ever said a word about grain or lighting, i.e. white balance. As you, with your equine photography, I knew what I was doing. Older cameras and lenses are all good in the right hands.

Look at all the award winning images that were taken in the days of so-called "bad digital cameras" that many now consider being toys.
They prove the point, it was (and it is) absolutely possible to take stunning images with lower spec gear... but camera companies desperately push the other agenda, that's the way they generate their sales and profit.
I have not even touched on the VERY old gear that was used decades ago, almost pinhole cameras shooting photos we still use in photographic education because they are considered masterpieces that stood the test of time. Today most would laugh at what they used back then or happily throw away that gear without a second thought... whilst obviously lining up to buy the latest mirrorless bodies so they can feed their own GAS frenzy, which Nikon, Sony, Canon and all others are gaslighting....
I still shoot on a 7D MK1 and 5Dii and as long as I am happy and my clients are happy that is all that counts

Totally agree, newbies tend to think it's all about the gear. When I'm with s group of photographers who start talking about gear I always feel like yawning and walking away! Most cameras today are capable of taking good quality images, I couldn't care less about what someone uses or doesn't use, I'm only interested in results, the art of photography seems to be being replaced by the art of "my camera is better than yours" 😂 "The photographer is the instrument not the camera" - Eve Arnold. For years I was using a Canon 40D, I only got a 7D because of the 100% viewfinder. My first DSLR was a 6.3 mp Canon 10D and the A3 prints from it were beautiful! Just a bit slow to use. I'm not even all that interested in full frame, do I really need it? It would mean selling most of my lenses designed for the crop sensor, some which i really like and rate, and having to spend more money getting lenses for the full frame job. Most people I know who do use full frame cameras heavily crop their images... ergo they are not shooting full frame! 😂 As a street photographer the Canon 7D and my present aray of lenses might possibly be all I will ever need? I do have a lumix lx100 compact camera I sometimes like to use if i want to travel light and fast, and for a 4/3rds sensor it's a very capable camera, even in low light.

Honestly, I often found having the newest and greatest in terms of pretty much anything, (even besides cameras), made it such a novelty I would be hesitant using it. Cameras are made to capture moments and not dust. Its so sad to hear all these rude comments that seem so shortsighted. Yeah - if you need the latest and greatest, get it! But most people don't and don't realize it until they have spent too much and try justifying the expense in retrospect. (Granted, this is coming from a hobbyist who has fallen in the "trap" before - I've never been paid for my work nor had intention of doing so - perhaps milage may vary.)
I mean I remember when I read about a multimillion dollar show being edited in Final Cut Pro (pretty sure it was "Dexter"), and how it was "amateur" software compared to the "superior" Adobe suite - there was so much negative air. All I realized is that most people only cared about the end product anyway - most people were too busy raving about the show and the critique died shortly thereafter. Sure, it's probably a great starting point and has limits, but working within those limits can really push you creatively as well.
The lighting and color in this video is amazing. Brings me back to other older warmth of my youth. Find everything to be too cold nowadays.

Yeah I nearly bought an xt3 a while ago. Lens prices made me think twice, but it really is an awesome camera though.

Still own a 20D and there are times I think it takes better shots than my newer body.

I own about 60 cameras and my favourite is the Samsung NV7 7.2MP simply for its incredible macro. I bought 7 of them as it's cheaper to buy one second hand than to have a camera serviced.

U r a legend!! Completely agree with you.. I recently got an old Pro Mf lens from the 80’s and undoubtedly outperforms optically most of the new pro lenses, of course with some limitations. Love old shit, good for the wallet and also for the brain!!

Problem is that people are not actually forced to watch your videos or share your views. However it's all this 'entitled' society - and their entitlement to their own opinion which makes them feel obligated to express it - or a unicorn will die somewhere if they don't. That's what it seems anyway. If you don't like it, move on, leave it for others, as it clearly shows that you've got quite a following so it resonates with many, but not all. I've got my 7D and not planning to upgrade until when I feel it is restricting me. I will probably buy another camera at some point, but 7D will stay where it is. Been there, had the newest kit and ended up selling the lot due to unplanned changes in my life. Same camera (30D) then cost me over £5k with lenses, now bought one before 7D for £50. Guess what, still takes great shots, I had some really nice ones back then - but I was out with it, shooting a lot. And since I worked in large format printing in the past - back in the day when Sony introduced the first Mavica with floppy disk drive - I've been enlarging and printing stuff of such low quality by today's standards, yet - at the time we've printed posters for fashion shows, billboards - and not one person complained. And you would never tell, this was a low res image... :)

Great comment my friend - yeah, folks be strange sometimes.
So true about large printing, but still the messaging online is 'more pixels, more pixels'...
      Thank you,

These comments come from a consistently annoying base of photography gate-keepers. Ones that are feature-focused on the latest and greatest. More often than not, they tend to have the greatest gear and some of the most mediocre photos. The fact you can do light years more with less speaks to what makes a photographer, skill, knowledge, and experience. There's no megapixel amount that could ever compensate that.

I didn't realise how many snobs watch your vlogs, truth be known these guys don't or can't use all the technology in a modern camera.
