I've gone all over RUclips and Google looking for guidance on recording vocals, and I concur with the comment below that this is about the best video around. Many thanks. Figures it comes from Berklee.
This video was presented very accurately and better than most, in my opinion. Also, it gives more of a practical understanding of what Crissy explained about the playlist, which I was so unmindful of. I miss taking the on-line courses with Berklee. I wish I had Crissy as my instructor. Great job on the vocals, Satarra!
Amazing singer!!! She' s the one who every engineer wants in studio. Where can I find the whole song? Thanks for these Pro Tools tips, I' m new with it, I always used Cubase but my teacher showed me this amazing DAW so I was just learning something new, thanks a lot !!!
Thank you so much for this upload. Taught me so much that I needed to understand (like playlist options). The singer was also fantastic. A pleasure to listen to over and over.
Outstanding video, instructor, and singer. :) I really appreciate how you explained what, why, and how you did what you did. One of the best instructional videos I've seen. Thank you!
Thank you for this video, it's straight forward and I learned exactly what I needed. My recording classes did not teach anything about the harmonies, although I can obviously hear it on other people's recordings, I wasn't sure how to approach it.
First time visiting this channel! Wow, thank you so much for this insight. I used it on my vocals today, and it was so useful! Going to have to do it a few times to get it smoothed out, but I am excited to check out more of your content. I am also blogging to send more people to this so they can benefit from your knowledge! Thanks again! Here's to the chase!
"This is the central scrutinizer"... I believe Zappa must have making deliberate use of the proximity effect for this specific character; I can't imagine a potential use of the P's in a musical setting but it's kinda fun to think about it. A great video - very clear and well paced. Think I learned as much about making a strong presentation as I did about recording vocals watching this. There's a lot of information yet it's paced in a way that its easy to digest. Also rather than static, it incites a strange sense of adventure inviting the viewer to explore and tinker without loosing its sense of direction. Finally despite the lack of humor, the combination of the songs character and presenters body language keeps the tone friendly and casual. Again, tons to learn here ...
This is a fantastic and truly illustrative tutorial. Thanks for going step-by-step and fully explaining each step! Awesome learning. And the singer is just making it look so easy. ;-) Great voice.
Thank you all the videos that I have seen none of them help me the way you just explain to diffuse all of the sequence questions that I was once asking this video has answer majority of them I hope you make more videos thank you again this helped me a lot
Awesome tips and presentation! Loved it. Thank you so very much for sharing! BTW, I couldn't find the song lyrics. Is it written anywhere that I can copy from? Thanks again!
Great stuff here! You may be doing this with the vocalist (can't tell) but I find it's much easier to sing more in tune if I'm NOT hearing the original track I'm doubling in the headphones. I always mute the original track when doubling. The key is to rehearse every nuance of a part that is to be layered beforehand. Hearing myself on an earlier take tends to throw me off pitch a bit for the current take. OR you can take off the left or right side of the headphones so you can better hear current intonation as you match performance subtleties with the earlier take in the other ear. That's me anyway. Other (better) vocalists may not have this issue.
Great video! A new technic is a software from SynchroArts with their Revoice Pro where you can create harmonies and doubles in stereo or mono. Very useful. A BIG 👍🏻 for your video again.
It's distorted because you didn't gain stage the closer mic position. The proximity effect is often desirable. Especially for a delicate or intimate performance. 3 inches away isn't the "right "way. The right way is the method that sounds the best in the given context.
Viewing this in April 2020! Covid-19, (the voice killer) days! Anyhow, I had just last week downloaded Pro Tools First, free software that came with a new Mackie ProFX6V3 mixer that I bought. I hated it. Went back to Audacity that I was using (mostly for fun karaoke recording). Then I discovered CAKEWALK BY BANDLAB, an awesome FREE DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) which I run on my Windows 10 laptop. Watched several YT videos, and then got going. Superb for home use, and could be used in a studio too! Am not going back to Audacity again!! I just use a Shure SM58 dynamic microphone with a foam cover which pretty much handles the pops well. For just this fun stuff I do not feel like spending $400 and up on a condenser mic; besides, I already have an AKG condenser mic which I bought 15 years ago for $150, an AKG C1000S; it now sells for $199 and is pretty good, really. But a noisy household is no place for a condenser mic! And oh, maybe a good mask will work as a pop filter? Likely not; just kidding! :)
MJ used an SM7(Dynamic Microphone) on 'Off The Wall' & 'Thriller'. They worked @the same Studio I started out at: westlakestudios.com - Be sure to check out the Speaker Catalogue as well! - we had a few MJ, Police & Kravitz 2" tape copied reels we'd use for Mixing practice(it sounded like the Record when the faders were at 0/unity).The 1st two LP's by MJ were done in Studio A. The Control Room was built by Glen Phoenix(Electrical Engineer/Physicist/CEO). He changed the game and brought theEngineer's listening environment to a whole new level and is considered ny many to be the Father of Modern Control Room/Far-field Speaker Design. Many of the biggest Records continue to be Mixed @Westlake. I borrowed a few ideas when I built my own place.
If you mixed a song and found the vocal was too quiet: A.You would re-record the vocal. B. You would remix the song C. You would add some echo. D. You would not do anything.
You're still hitting the analogue front end of that convertor that hot to achieve those levels, and THAT sounds crappy. A better argument is that with 24bit or 32 bit float DAWs there isn't any REASON to record that hot.
Why i messed up my vocals is by -recording too Hot. -Then having to change recording level during recording. -Then changing monitoring levels during recording. -Not Positioning my Mic Directly. -Shuffling around in my chair

If you mixed a song and found the vocal was too quiet:
A.You would re-record the vocal. B. You would remix the song
C. You would add some echo. D. You would not do anything.
Given that everything was set-up properly for recording, I would raise the volume of the vocal or bring down the volume of my track.
I'm subscribing!
Super #Superb... Mountains of #Appreciation
PLEASE if you're not recording to tape, keep your levels between -18 and -12 dbfs. It will SAVE YOU A LOT OF TROUBLE.
Pollard you can record as hot or as low as you want with modern 24bit converters
There is no reason to hit that number at all
Handy tip 15 years ago
hahaha. thank for the advice, you save my 8bit interface from distortion. =D
You're still hitting the analogue front end of that convertor that hot to achieve those levels, and THAT sounds crappy. A better argument is that with 24bit or 32 bit float DAWs there isn't any REASON to record that hot.
