I think that the competitive aspect among many of the stars is just not there. Like you mention the players protection of their brand has reduced the natural competitiveness. It still exists in a rare few of the players and there are coaches that will allow nothing less. Unfortunately players will give up a layup to avoid being in a highlight that would reflect badly on their image. Attitudes in some of the current generation can be seen in Anthony Edwards insisting that he was the Olympic team’s first option, all while coming off of the bench! There is a sense of entitlement present in many of these players making them difficult to be coached and ruining the team chemistry needed for their team to be at their best. It is all about them and not the team. The NBA and the mainstream media play into and promote this on the regular.
Get rid of the "travel step" and carrying and you'll start to see the game change. There should be no reason a player should be able to take 3-5 steps back to the 3pt line without dribbling.

Bring back hand checking which will allow the defense to be more physical. Everybody can shoot now but they don’t all have the ability to create a shot
Officials still allow hand checking to a certain degree. They allow the arm bar even when it is counter to the actual rules. The arm bar is supposed to be allowed when the player with the ball has his back to the defender but the officials very loosely enforce that to the point where it is utilized when a player is driving to the basket. As always certain players are allowed more leeway than others and that applies to both ends of the floor.
I do not hand checking anytime I have seen it. If they were hand checking the defenses hand would be on them and they wouldn’t be all these wide open 3’s so not sure where it is.

1. Bring back hand checks and allow the defense to be physical again. There is no defense, so it DOES feel like a contest instead of competition. Just shooters taking shots back and forth. 2. Follow the rules of basketball - call traveling, double dribbles, and carrying. "That's why you can't change the rules - because the rules make it fun!" - Coco (Bluey) 3. Stop throwing technicals for stupid calls. It's a men's league, allow them to flex and talk smack again. It brings out the competition. 4. No more flopping or foul baiting. If players do that, just don't call the foul. 5. Players need to stop complaining. Sometimes refs make mistakes, shut up and keep playing. The whole flow of the game gets ruined when you constantly have players whining over every little thing.
Bribing guys who already get paid astronomical amounts of money and only work 7-8 months out of the year in a failing league, with cars and more money to do their job is insane. That’s the problem, they already get too much. The NBA needs to step up to the players union and negotiate non guaranteed contracts. Big contracts that work on a bonus structure and players only receive those bonuses if they play a certain amount of games, make an all star, win a certain amount of games, make the playoffs, win a title, mvp, etc. giving them more will only exacerbate the problem. However, it’s mind boggling you have to incentivize competition and it’s not innate
Giannis and KD are some of the few NBA players that remind me how players used to play during the 90s and early 2000s which is points coming mostly in the paint, midrange game and sometime shooting the 3. Nowadays everybody trying to pull from the parking lot.
I have a solution that nobody is thinking about it...scoring in the paint without the 3 second rule count 3 points too! But you have a limited time to score the 3 in the paint...same behing the line...but elsewhere on court you have 24 seconds to shoot it!
Here's how you make the All-Star game good: If you're selected as an all-star you agree to put up $500k of personal funds. Winning team takes all! Also, you could break up the East/West and maybe do a random selection or have teams selected by a voted mid-season MVP of East and West.
There has been too many rules that have helped NBA offenses, and it has thrown the balance off. The NBA needs to add rules that help the defenses again, because more dynamic defenses lead to more dynamic offenses being ran
I'm sure players these days love the soft play with switching everything on defense and putting up 3's and avoiding any contact. I've been a die hard fan since the early 80's and I haven't seen a single NBA game this year. I'm only watching college games until the NBA fixes itself.
Sports betting is ruining the game as well. People are rooting for both teams sometimes because they got multi bets. Like they not even watching the flow of the game just waiting for the score or stat line to show up. People watching basketball for that reason is slowly ruining the game, but espn and basketball analysts can’t talk about that because they owned by them 😂
Zero creativity. 3pt or layup/free throw. No real defense for more than a moment or two here or there. The traveling rule has been let too loosely. The players have no passion for the game itself. The money has really been a huge factor in the decline. The flopping. It’s as if they have amplified everything that is not great about the game and everything that made it special got suppressed. I used to not be able to get enough. I’d watch so many games in its entirety. I can’t even get through a complete game now. It’s boring. Nothing exciting. I put more effort in on pickup games at the park than most of these guys do now. Adam Silver has let the degrade into a sad product. And while ratings are down they try to act like that’s not a big deal and ppl are just finding other ways to watch, that’s bs cuz the other sports are making gains. They are making adjustments to get viewership back up and they are increasing. Ppl just aren’t interested in watching guys who get paid so much not out in full effort on both sides of the ball, sit out 25% or more of the season to rest. Watch every team jack up a bunch of 3s like curry when only curry can shoot like curry. It’s unwatchable.
allowing carrying every possession ruined the game... now every player can drive and kick, dribblers and shot creators dont stand out anymore as much as they used to...its like players just go trhough the motions now instead of being free flowng because they all know eeveryone is carrying so the possession always gonna be carry drive and kick
Just pull the 3pt line back. Turn a 40% shot into a 20% shot. Force offenses to start within the arch and force them to kick it out or step way back if they want to take that weak shot. Then, relax the 3 second rule in the paint to 4. We need more post ups but force these good shooters to hit mid-range shots. Force people to the basket.
I love Godfry i saw him Orlamdo FL. From the time he went on stage till he went off every jokes hit Godfrey love you man. Ill help with your stand-up show
They've bastardized the rules so badly that they've destroyed the natural competition between the offense and defense. We aren't even watching a sport anymore.
Switch it. Make shots close to the hoop worth 3 and anything outside a certain area worth 2. Reward teams for manufacturing good looks. Bring back physical defense, too.
It’s come full circle, now it’s like 24hr fitness open gym with super good athletes and better talent. Rebound jog up the court loft up a three, rinse repeat.
Offensive players were not supposed to be able to dislodge a defender in legal guarding position. O'Neil quite often rammed right through a kegal defender without a foul being called. Setting that aside... Defenses could make almost every three point attempt a low percentage shot. The problem is that the defense would give up a 95+% two point shot, most likely a dunk, every possession.
I got me a blue Orlando 32 jersey when I was a kid. 1st jersey and bout ran away to get it. Ripped one rim down. Tore another whole goal down cuz the pole was rusted. Lowered goal of course. just look at what happened to that glorious best-of'em-all 3-point-shooter Currie in Suns vs Warriors when someone started playing real defence on him. Brick - Brick - Brick.....
The only reason people complain about the current format of the All-Star game is because the players don't play defense. They don't play to win. They don't play for the fans who want to see competition from the best players the NBA has to offer.
The NBA game looks uninspiring. It’s not “did you see that move from so and so last night?” anymore. It’s more “see how many three’s so and so made?” And which team won or lost. There are not too many dimensions to NBA games anymore it’s very straight forward
Basketball has become position-less. You have forwards and centers that can do the same things that guards can do. Everyone is playing outside of their SUPPOSED role.
It’s analytics, the team decision makers are implementing this play style to the detriment of the traditional game. Owners want to win and they will take any edge they can get. Now we’ve reached parody.
Shek, if you’re reading the comments please take note of this because I know you’re going to agree. The level of competition at the All-Star game is set by the face of the NBA and you know better than anyone that that face changed significantly when Kobe retired sent them. The game has deteriorated to the pathetic excuse we watch each year until now you know what I’m talking about thanks my man
The player need to be allowed to play defense without being called for a foul on anything. They need to extend the court.Raise the rim and push back the 3 point line. That sounds extreme but I think its time

1. Bring back hand checks and allow the defense to be physical again. There is no defense, so it DOES feel like a contest instead of competition. Just shooters taking shots back and forth.
2. Follow the rules of basketball - call traveling, double dribbles, and carrying. "That's why you can't change the rules - because the rules make it fun!" - Coco (Bluey)
Take out the three point line! Bring it back to old school!
I Definitely Agree With Shaq
Just add handchecking…..And the game will stop being a 3 point contest.
Here's how you make the All-Star game good:
If you're selected as an all-star you agree to put up $500k of personal funds. Winning team takes all!
Also, you could break up the East/West and maybe do a random selection or have teams selected by a voted mid-season MVP of East and West.
I decided to watch a little of the NBA a week or so ago. I seen Wemby take like 6 or 7 3's in the first quarter and I had enough and turned it off.
U might as well run the 4 out motion at this point….Because nobody is taking a mid range or posting up.
I forgot what the vid was about, godfreys begging caught me off guard
2:23 LOL sooooo true. "WTF you doing, get your ass in the middle" LOLOLOLOL love that
In the 80's and 90's I could name teams entire starting line ups! I couldn't name 10 current players now.
shooting 33% from behind the arc is like shooting 50% from inside the arc. It makes more sense to shoot 3s
Which makes it a 3pt contest …Looks like they have no bag .. all those 🧱’s smh ….
🤡
They need too reestablish the old rules
There has been too many rules that have helped NBA offenses, and it has thrown the balance off. The NBA needs to add rules that help the defenses again, because more dynamic defenses lead to more dynamic offenses being ran
I call it WATERED DOWN COMPETITION WITH GOOD MARKETING.
I'm sure players these days love the soft play with switching everything on defense and putting up 3's and avoiding any contact. I've been a die hard fan since the early 80's and I haven't seen a single NBA game this year. I'm only watching college games until the NBA fixes itself.
Then you aren’t a die hard fan at all, you’re literally a casual fan if you don’t watch games and just complain on social media
@ 😂 I’m a die hard fan of competitive high end basketball. As soon as the NBA gets back to playing it, then I’ll get back to watching them.
Godfrey is so right. The players are partially responsible but the onus falls on the executives, coaches, and owners.
Take out the 3 point line for the all star game. It’s already gimmicky. Let’s see what happens if the 3 isn’t an option.
Sports betting is ruining the game as well. People are rooting for both teams sometimes because they got multi bets. Like they not even watching the flow of the game just waiting for the score or stat line to show up. People watching basketball for that reason is slowly ruining the game, but espn and basketball analysts can’t talk about that because they owned by them 😂
"I don't know what the f we're watching now"😂
I haven’t watched a full NBA game since 2015 almost 10 years 😢 I miss watching good pro basketball
Basketball is reminding me of what happened with boxing. The quality went down and the sport all but disappeared.
Force people to the basket.
i kid you
not, the new
excuse now
is
the media
ruined the
nba.
So many three’s… missing those days that centers are not licensed to shoot 3’s. I feel like Giannis is like the closest to guys from the 90’s.
I don’t see how “high scoring” is deemed enjoyable, even to casual fans. No defense, no competition-No longer enjoyable. 3 pt layup line smh
0:20 Skip 2 My Lou is what comes to mind. He played in the NBA, Rafer Alston. Much respect, he made it.
2008 ish to 2013 ish was my favorite, good mix of post play, dunks and 3s.
I love Godfry i saw him Orlamdo FL. From the time he went on stage till he went off every jokes hit
Godfrey love you man. Ill help with your stand-up show
TAKE AWAY THE CORNER 3! …Also call; travels, carries, and moving screens⬅️
@7:48 Lefkoe gives the “that made zero sense but I’ll bite my tongue here” look
Players want to load manage, play out of position and shoot 3s and are overpaid removing incentives to get better.
They've bastardized the rules so badly that they've destroyed the natural competition between the offense and defense. We aren't even watching a sport anymore.
1989 all star game. Zeke played with MJ, Charles. You know Zeke battled MJ so hard yet in that game, they worked together. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Good times. 😊
NBA is nothing but a *shell* of the league it once was 🐚
Switch it. Make shots close to the hoop worth 3 and anything outside a certain area worth 2. Reward teams for manufacturing good looks. Bring back physical defense, too.
Dunking worth three points and behind the arc worth one point.
I only keep track of stats online. I CAN NOT watch this eras game.
The NBA sucks today it soft I miss the old 80s and 90s
Adam Silver is nonexistent 💯💯💯
The league misses Shaq, Hakeem, and Ewing
I got me a blue Orlando 32 jersey when I was a kid. 1st jersey and bout ran away to get it. Ripped one rim down. Tore another whole goal down cuz the pole was rusted. Lowered goal of course. My buddy across the street loved some Hakeem... every day Shaq vs. The Dream in the driveway. These kids out here playing horse today.
Dallas vs Warriors game where they set the 3 point record. The game was boring. It was just a 3 point shooting contest with no defense
just look at what happened to that glorious best-of'em-all 3-point-shooter Currie in Suns vs Warriors when someone started playing real defence on him. Brick - Brick - Brick.....
The All Star Game use to be about the Fanes .You can sit in the 1st row for less then $500.
The only reason people complain about the current format of the All-Star game is because the players don't play defense. They don't play to win. They don't play for the fans who want to see competition from the best players the NBA has to offer.
I remember the dudes posting up on the block and taking elbows to the face and getting feet stepped on to get 2 points. And I played guard. ✊🏾
The NBA game looks uninspiring. It’s not “did you see that move from so and so last night?” anymore. It’s more “see how many three’s so and so made?” And which team won or lost. There are not too many dimensions to NBA games anymore it’s very straight forward
The problem is ... too many shots being taken ... not enough plays happening ... no defensive strategy ... players don't have to worry about making it
Basketball has become position-less. You have forwards and centers that can do the same things that guards can do. Everyone is playing outside of their SUPPOSED role.
Bring back the foghts like Malice at The Palace. And the rowdy outlaws like Dennis Rodman! Basketball became beta!
That sounds extreme but I think its time
If wembie isn’t dominating the paint and throwing up threes you know the game is changing
Todays NBA is basically And 1. EVERY night I see palming the ball and traveling and its NEVER called.
i dont even think giannis plays basketball its like some other sport
The carrying thing still throws me off. I remeber we would call that in streetball games in Middle School. All of a sudden its legal in the NBA.
The traveling is pretty jarring for me to see. Been watching since the 90s and I don’t even know wtf I’m watching anymore.
NBA is a representation of the world today. It's just a big show... it's like nothing really matters anymore. Just looking for that one moment to go viral...
I can't even imagine watching an NBA game today.
I think EVERY city with an NBA team deserves to host an All Star weekend at least once.
I like the idea of players losing a small percentage of pay if they lose the all star game. Don't know if it'll be from their regular team contract, their all star bonus, or other means of pay, but you touch their wallets and they'll compete.
They're trying to recreate the wheel with the new analytics.😎
Had to watch the pod with draft kings flashing nonstop at the bottom. I couldn’t finish it. Agree with the takes though.
Supposed to say “Hard” to watch. Sorry.
Give them a Cybertruck…? LOL Nobody wants that headache! 😂
