- My everything hurts. I'm pretty sure I inhaled enough welding fumes, grinding dust and wood shavings during the course of this project to take a few years off my life. I worked so hard, sweated so much, and ate so little for four days that my old pants fit again. I'm not joking - that actually happened.
Anyway, as I explained over the course of the first two videos on this first gen Cummins truck, I have long had a vision for my ideal car hauler. It comfortably fits an A-body Mopar on the back to go racing, while still being of a reasonably parkable size. It has main flat bed section that can be used for flat bed things. It should have storage for other necessary equipment and junk while there is a car on it. Ideally it would have a 60s Sweptline cab, big tool boxes, a boom for lifting engines and such, a giant winch or two, onboard air, a generator, lights everywhere, maybe a welder... Listen, it's not done yet. But on today's episode, my ramp truck project takes a humongous leap forward. Let's dive in! - Авто/Мото

There's literally a thousand different ways you could've done this. But then again, the thousand ways would come from your audience. I have to point out that the truck is yours. Meaning, how you did it, is the right way. Coulda, shoulda, woulda, it comes down to how you wanted to build the extension. The choice of materials is yours. How I'd do it, vice your ideas, is why I'm not gonna say anything about that. It hold a car, that's all the you're after. Good job brother.

I'm running 12x16.5 duplex rims on my D350 dually. Weight capacity is the same. Smoother ride as there is only two side-walls, and stays in balance better.
I am impressed! And no rain!

I rattle canned my hood with flat black paint (do this about every 5 years). I use mar-hyde one-step rust converter for the rest of the truck. Since the truck is faded black, the mar-hyde just blends in if done correctly. I have two super nice leather seats out of a mid-80s sports car in my 93 D350 - comfort is #1. I need to get the A/C working as we have already hit 100F. This past weekend my son helped to swap out a 1" spacer on the front coils for a 3/4" spacer. The 1" looked nicer, but it was almost impossible to get aligned. I like that old cab you have.
Nice. Yes when the cab swap happens, I have big plans for comfy seat, center console, etc. creature comforts. That will definitely be a while.
My 92 D350 had seats that look comfy and sporty. From the factory. But they were killing my back. The side bolsters were cutting into my side and I am not even fat.
I swapped in a seat from an E body Cuda and problem solved. It was a direct bolt in. Well, the punishing suspension part of the problem was not solved but the seat part was.

Great job Jamie! Congrats on the feverish burst of energy and focus. This is how things get done. My opinion on the Sweptline cab swap - forget it. I'm old enough to clearly remember my Uncle's new '66 pickup. Doors never fit right, door handles stuck, glove box was a struggle to open and close, windows resisted opening and closing, whistled and rattled from day one, and within five or six years you could see the ground through the cab floor. Nostalgia has its place, in our thoughts.....
This cab whistles. It rattles. The doors don’t shut right. The glovebox doesn’t close right. The driver’s window doesn’t work right. Half of the electronics are dead. So really, it seems about right 😅

I’ve had a lot of ramp trucks over the years. Here’s some unsolicited advice.
Relocate the taillights and make the whole side a lip for the ramp. You’re gonna need it
Work lights by the trailer hitch, and low on the deck at front. The lights up top seem like a good idea but they make shadows and are useless.
Fill that center in except for a slot for ramps. I know you want storage but you’re gonna drop a lot of cars in it when the deck is wet.
There’s more but I’m not writing a book
Awesome. I actually got some big gnarly lights to use for reverse lights on the bumper, and already added a spot in my control panel for a switch to use them as work lights too. Dropping the front lights to the deck makes good sense. I wasn’t totally sold on having them up top for various reasons anyway. The center area is going to be completely covered by a panel that opens. I intend for it to be strong enough to resist the occasional car trying to drive over it. I also don’t plan to use this for anything but race days, when it shouldn’t be raining - but obviously stuff happens. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

The best part is seeing you get off your butt and _do_ car things all the time. Its inspiring! Another weekend here with zilch done on the car (but yes we did do gardening and planters and other stuff). I need to work on the car!

Very ambitious project there Jamie, especially for a self-professed "non-fabricator".
I'd have some concerns about cantilevered forces at play or some such, but most of
the weight of the towed car will be up on the main deck typically, so there's not as
much concern there.
As it stands, you've improved that old girl by quite a bit regardless.

You got what you needed through trial and error just learned another real life skill that will save you money. Imagine what it would have cost taking it somewhere and having them do all the cutting, fabricating ,and welding on that truck. You did a nice job can't wait to see the underside storage compartments when you get around to it. Your description of the long term vision sounds really good and functional . Just Keep it on the ramps and no shame in a back up camera it's smart .
The ramp bed looks good, and it definitely looks strong enough. And, a sweptline cab would be super cool, especially with a"DDG" logo on each door.

Right after the creation of the welder, they created the grinder. This probably isn’t true, but I say it almost every time I weld.
Welding is one of those skills you have to keep using to stay good at it. When I used to weld a lot, my welds were much more pleasing to the eye.

Bro, Ramp truck dreams for the WIN! Solidly impressed. She's straight and true-ish. Looks banging with your charger in her. Maybe once you get the sides boxed in, Add the hockey sticks to the side? or maybe AAR stripes? dunno but she needs....something. Besides lighting and the crane. Just an Idea. Keep it up, we're still watching and loving every minute.

This is a great exercise in built not bought. This things awesome! Pretty similar to what I have in mind for my ramper, just going to build it on a crew cab Squarebody instead! For now I'll have to be satisfied with my wrecker!

Another great vid, I said it before and I'll say it again "Better n tv" , your editing is pro and I love that you don't annoy with high speed redundant mundane recording or lame background music and gimmick sounds or idiotic memes. Although I despise fake drama I did appreciate the artistic license during the previous Holley replacement vid. Definitely had some Jack Nicholson "The Shining" moments.

I think you should consider using expanded sheet metal for the front of the rear storage area. Regular sheet metal would just act as an air brake/parachute. Any reduction in drag should be helpful. 🤓
But do I want air flowing up and through there? I’m definitely not smart enough to model the whole truck in Air Shaper to find out. Haha.
All I can say is "Wow." 👍 There are different options for the tie downs. I would try some in the metal at the front and back, and some in the wood on the bed. I think they look like "D" in little holes in the wood.
The Mopar radio is roughly Din and a half and most of the aftermarket radios with inputs for rear view camera are double Din. A few are single Din.
As for it being the perfect truck, I would like all my "first gens" to be Club cabs since I don't like the shorter leg room and upright seat backs in the standard cabs.
There was a long feature in a car mag about 40 years ago about a stock car racer with a long career. A Mopar guy. He built the "perfect ramp truck" by combining several other trucks. I think the key to it was starting with a diesel powered D600 or something like that and replacing the cab with a Club Cab or crew cab and lengthening the frame.

I had a 79, it’s ridiculous how similar they were with a 92 🤣 not a whole lot of major changes going on in those days.
Dude, yeah. Haha. Basically ‘72-93 are the same truck. Yes the dashes, interior panels and noses changed, as well as the added body lines, but to me they’re all the same thing.
