This week we are talking about what we do for a living to have transitioned to full time digital nomads working on the road.
Are you looking for remote jobs you can do from a van and a way to travel cheaply, then van life is definitely a more affordable way to live for most, here's how we do it.
Van life isn't free though, especially as we still have a base here in the UK, so what is it we do to pay for long term travel trips?
For those of you still asking what exactly it is that Emily does to be able to work remotely from our self converted campervan, how to stay connected with wifi in a van or motorhome and what it's like to balance work and travel then hopefully this video will answer those questions.
As always thank you for watching, if you have any questions about this topic then drop them below and we will do our best to answer them if we can.
Follow us on our journey as we attempt to create a proper youtube travel series as we, two female travelers and vanlifers, attempt to travel across Europe in our rolling tiny home.
Hit the subscribe button to see where our DIY campervan takes us next and how this van life couple copes living in a van!
Have a look at emily's blog for her thoughts on all things van..

I travelled the world only speaking English because it made me engage with people more. In Colombia I went into a restaurant and the waitresses asked "Soupa?". Si. And then she gave me a choice. Two middle aged ladies on the next table pointed to their soups, I pointed to vegetable. Main course I heard coory, yes I love curry. One of the 2 adies asked me if I enjoyed my meal. "Bien, mucho bien."
But she tried to teach me a better word that I couldn't hear. 3 workmen on another table smiled and one wrote the word on a napkin. When I could read it I could say it. The waitress came and asked me if I enjoyed my food and I read the word on the napkin. We all laughed.
If I spoke Spanish I order my meal, eat and leave, but because I didn't I had a laugh with the two ladies, the 3 workmen and the waitress.
Body language, facial expressions and hand gestures took me round the world and helped me engage with everyone I met.

Pummel the mortgage is great advice to people whether they are planning on van life or not.
Every penny that you pump into the mortgage is several pennies more off the total interest that you pay over the term of the loan. I know that it is harder now with massive gas and electric bills but reducing the mortgage is one of the best money savings that you can make if you can afford it.

Emily - there was a workplace study done here fairly recently that found in-office employees were productive for just about four hours so you're doing just fine with your four and your plus one (the hour, not the Lou). This was a great video especially the section on getting prepared in advance because it does look a lot easier to pull off than it really is. Don't be afraid of French. My French friends tell me that people like it when we try to speak their language (I love it when I get corrected by a native speaker...I always thank them.) Allez mes amis avec joie de vivre!!! Being debt free is my and my wife's greatest achievement. It has freed us to have no money worries. Clever budgeting and financial skills and doing without paid off. The house is paid for and the car is twelve years old, in good condition, very reliable and paid for. We travelled the world and Europe for the last twenty years. You gave seriously good advice. I love the way you share your lives and give each other space, very important and where many relationships fail. Enjoy each other, the van, the pets, and the journey. ♥🚐

I told people I met when I was travelling (staying in dormitories in hostels), "The Journey is not about the places you go, the things you see, or the people you meet, the Journey is what you discover about yourself. Every day it seems we have to overcome Hurdles, with no friends or family there to advise you, you have to deal with it yourself. You face problems you would never face at home, travelling is about how you grow as a person and the new skills you get to put in your social tool box". And you keep those skills for the rest of your life.

I learnt my languages before the internet & apps but I went on a trip around Eurpe with our American Export Manager and he was amazed how much more productive we were & how much easier it was to get around because I spoke French & German with a smattering of Italian & Spanish. Just being able to stop & ask directions in those pre GPS days was a boon. That experience netted me the European Manager role, so the ability to communicate with locals is really valuable...

I think the work from home culture is definitely going to make it easier for people to travel more whilst holding down their jobs, but I think your new lifestyle is a reminder that van life and travelling is not something you can do without an income. It's like off gridders. There is always a passive income, an inheritance or a stash of savings somewhere in the background supporting it because it really is impossible to live without money. You should be so proud of yourselves for having achieved so much at such an early stage in life. I finally got my camper age 56 in Feb 2022 but it was bucket list for me as I have incurable cancer and that spurred me on to finally get my ducks lined up!! A long trip abroad is out for me due to treatment, but there are loads no of places in NI/Ireland to explore so I’m not stuck at all for journeys. Maybe you will come here sometime - you would love it!!
I’m also interested in how you manage AJ and Summer. I’ve 2 dogs (18mth) but we haven’t ventured out with them yet very much. My partner is not a dog fan so I’ve probably more ground work to do with him than the dogs 🤣🤣🤣

I have a campervan and I would find it difficult to constantly be filming, getting the drone out , doing social media etc etc rather than just enjoying the experience. I am not on any social media apart from watching stuff on RUclips and find I'm much more relaxed in life because I'm not constantly checking stuff that doesn't matter in my life. I fully understand you have to do it and I really appreciate it because I enjoy your channel. Keep up the great adventures folks. Love from the Highlands.

Hello spot on with the advice , we sold up in the UK and France and fulltime now.
Been living in a motorhome for years, but now nearing 70 years old it's time to travel even more, it keeps us young.
As for learning a language, it's a great idea.
I would say French is a main one to learn( not because I speak French ) but like English it's used by many people throughput the world.
And many words the same but with an accent.
Great viewing, a touch of fresh air.

I am far from fluent but immersion is one of the best ways to learn once vocabulary and basic verb structure is learned. It's about patterns. Remember to say "Bonjour Madame" (Monsieur) or "Bonjour" with a bright voice whenever you meet someone before asking a question or making a statement. It is VERY polite in France. You could also say "Je prends" or "J'aimerais" un pain au chocolat. Bonne chance avec bon courage! Bises. You are always welcome to my village. Really lovely video... you manage to look at the camera as if you are looking at us. You conversational style is good to listen to.. Well done for sharing what works for yourselves.

This is a HUGE vlog....super informative...and super-honest...thanks for sharing all this with us...I thought it was a ROSES Lol.... I had a job like Emily and made big bucks...now redundant and live on ONLY Social Security...I am super poor in the USA...having been in an industry that had NO retirement system even at a "C" level Executive for 45+ years.....I feel much more aligned with Lou trying to make a living out of something new...I actually walk dogs and take care of pets in my apartment complex at like $100USD a week...super Cheers girls!!!

I just checked in during one of my "hair on fire" days, likened to Em, I am a Director of Operations and Information Systems. High Tech is insane and I do get lost in time zone changes often...snack bandit alarms can go awry at times :] I appreciated this vid because it does speak honestly to the fact that there are always "give and takes" to everyone's choices, but the life you dream is totally doable and its admirable that Em is equally vested in those who depend on her (personally and professionally). I've always told my teams that you can come to work in your PJs as long as you give me your best and meet the deadlines. Thank you for an enjoyable time-out gals, even though you weren't running around a campsite with a camera or capturing/sharing the wilds! Hola to the furballs and Fanny...til next time.

Excellent and informative video I agree with others that remote working is here to stay and far more acceptable than it ever was and very impressive how you both work together and Emily manages not to bury Louise under the patio! :-) Just kidding! you are a great team and that's why it works.. Ps pretty sure Emily you can connect up to two laptops and run one as your second screen, keep up the good work you two..

LOVE this vid! Loving your travels aswell, I’m a fairly new subscriber (few weeks) so this ‘behind the scenes’ was great as I’d love to solo trip with my 7 year old Jack Russell - just trying to gain some confidence, I’m currently overpaying on my remortgage and have a small savings pot towards a van (no idea what/when etc) so all tips appreciated. Loving yours and Liam the Terribles channels and just watched your ‘live’ (not to me) and you mentioned him so I’m tickled! Anywaaaayyy.. I’m off to watch more vids… where to start/middle or end hahaha. Keep enjoying Norway and thanks for sharing your lives xx 😘

I agree that apart from diesel it's as cheap to travel as stay at home, 'cos of my dogs we don't go for city breaks & there's so many wonderful places right for all 3 of us. Great to bump into Emily & AJ & later Louise too at Camp Quirky, hope your next trip is a blast.

I was always taught that it's rude to ask what somebody does for a living as it seems you're more interested in what you can get from them than in the person themselves. I spent the first year after I left the army living in a (badly) converted landrover 101 ambulance and it was generally not a good experience as I had not done any of the things you had to prepare for it. I think you've covered pretty much everything that I would have liked to have known beforehand. I've only just started watching your channel and I'll be honest what first attracted me was the two awesome smiles (2 girls.. one campervan video). I find your content refreshing and any video with both a dog and a cat in it has to be worth watching!
Stay safe and happy ladies (and give the pets a fuss from me)😊

That was a really nice video and a lot of answers to the questions we probably all have. Do you rent out your house, you never said but it would make sense to provide additional income. Remote working has had a huge push as a result of COVID and more and more companies are realizing how well it can work for both employer and employee.

That's an interesting though, although renting out may be more of a hassle than it's worth: Here, authorities are beginning to look at extracting taxes from the rent from those people who rent out their properties. So, you'll have additional paperwork. As well as worrying about people not respecting your property as you, the owner would...
