- According to BBC Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema is to undergo surgery after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament.
The 26-year-old Netherlands international was taken off on a stretcher during the Gunners' 1-0 Champions League defeat by Lyon on Thursday.
Arsenal said Miedema would be out for "an extended period of time" after her surgery in the coming days.
Writing on social media, Miedema said she was "absolutely gutted".
"It was one of those moments, where I knew straight away," she said.
"There's so many things going through your head. I won't be able to help my team anymore this season, no World Cup, surgery and rehab for a long long time."
Miedema is the latest Arsenal player to be sidelined with a ruptured ACL after England forward Beth Mead - who is also her partner - sustained the injury in November.
Miedema has scored four goals this season to help the Gunners to second in the Women's Super League, while they top Group C in the Champions League with a game remaining.
"It will be tough with plenty of difficult days," she added. "There will be plenty of crying, which we've had a lot of already, but sadly enough it's part of football.
"I'm lucky enough to have amazing team-mates, friends and family around me and Beth, who can guide me through everything that's coming while only being a couple of weeks ahead of me."
The club said in a statement: "Everyone at Arsenal wishes Viv well in her recovery and will be providing her with all the support she needs to return to action as soon as possible."#viviannemiedema

I cannot believe there’s probably another ACL injury, gutted for Viv and for the whole Arsenal squad, losing another of the key attacking players is going to really hurt them
Lieverd leg je gewoon neer bij je taak.
I’m absolutely gutted about Viv’s injury. This could keep her out for the rest of the season, just like Beth with her ACL 😢
Totally heartbroken for the Arsenal Ladies. We need to keep focus even more now and not get derailed with our plan for the rest of the season 🙏🏽⚽️🏆❤️
Gutted for her, wishing a speedy recovery
Had tears in my eyes looking at this as I did my knees in 2014 , I wish her all the best in recovery and I will tell her that she will be playing again soon ❤️
Can we just all appreciate Lia Wälti tho, the sweetest girl ever. She’s always there for everyone🥺❤️
that’s an acl injury probably 😭 no, not another one
It's so sad Viv couldn't play for world cup women this year but i hope she can recovery soon as possible, stay strong Viv
non-contact... plating leg... ugh. just awful. seven months out from her final "prime years" world cup too.
This is becoming far too frequent at Arsenal. Maybe they should try rotating players a little more. They have some of the WSL's most creative players sat on that bench that rarely get a single minute on the field.
Imo you need to shut down the entire organization. Obviously it's a systemic safety issue at this point. Boot them from both the WSL and PL structures permanently.
@@sdgoeij obviously it isn't just an Arsenal problem. My point still stands. There should be literally nothing more important than keeping your employees safe. When teams suffer injury after injury they need to be punished for failing to keep players safe, and punished harshly.
@@chrismburgess it's the way there landing.... Movement... They need a coach for this.. Common basketball injury
@@chrismburgess basically biology denial 🎉
thank you albert einstein
I love the care and attention towards her injury from the players; I hate watching a bad injury unfold; I’m sure I have PTSD from watching a terrible injury unfold with Eduardo and Ramsey. Doesn’t look good ACL wise. Gonna be at least 6 months unfortunately
Really feel for Viv, a non contact injury and a planted leg in the turf - such a freak injury. Now two of our best forward players are done for the season, More than half the teams goals gone. Also their goal should not of counted Mallard definitely interfered with play - so a double blow for us.
Una pena por Viviane, ella ya estaba recuperando ese nivel fantástico que tiene luego de las lesiones y ahora una nueva lesión. 😢
Our 2 best players out 😡
No contact injury
Bon rétablissement 🙏
I can hear the pop and feel the icy heat that happens when you get an ACL injury. I hope she only sprained her knee but it’s unlikely.
I wish it was just a sprain but a non contact injury from awkward landing free trying to get to the ball and not moving afterwards long with a stretcher and that big leg wrap immediately put on. We can easily reach the ACL or MCL injury.
Definitely an ACL. MCL is usually an impact from the side injury. Textbook case is Maren Mjelde in the conti cup final a couple of years back. Planted foot and impact to outside of knee forcing knee inwards. PCL is almost always either a hyper extension upon landing or planted leg with impact from the front. This kind of twisting action without impact is almost always an ACL.
I wonder why this is becoming so frequent. Over the last decade it feels like ACL injuries have become far more common. Maybe the new modern boots? The way the turf is now with the ultra modern techniques and materials? I'm not sure what but it seems to be happening way more often now and in multiple sports too.
Nah, idk if this is just a really big coincidence, but I’ve been playing with the NWSL and WSL in FIFA 23 and I’ve already lost 6 players in total to injury.. what is happening?!?
The women's team is just as unlucky as the men's team with injuries 🤦🏾♂️ sad news.
The ladies need to play on smaller pitches. Acl after acl
Let’s hope she’s back soon
Is Leah on commentary? Sounds like her.
No she was playing 😂
That would be impressive playing while making commentary.
Omg I had the same thought whe I first heard the commentary 💀
Courtenay somebody. Double barrelled surname that I can't remember. Former Everton player.
Remembered now Courtenay Sweetman-Kirk, co-commentator.
MILO❤❤🎉🎉😮😮😊😊
Was milo?😊
What the media never talks about: girls and young women are far more likely than males to suffer serious knee injuries, some studies say they suffer these injuries at up to 10x the rate of males -- this is because the muscles which stabilize the knee joint are much weaker in females, so the knee joint is vulnerable during the stress of high intensity sport -- there has been a literal epidemic of these injuries in girls and young women
the muscles aren't weaker, they aren't trained!!! Don't say it's because muscles are weaker because they aren't. Muscles are trained and when they aren't they become weaker. Girls aren't given strength training at a young age which boys do get, that's the difference
@@bubbleblow7461 You must be joking --- the average 80 y/o man has more grip strength than the average female of any age, and it is not even close, meaning it is significantly more -- the same is true for all muscle groups -- men are a LOT stronger than women
@@bubbleblow7461 That's bullshit. No matter how much you train, a woman is always gonna carry less muscle mass, which in this case creates more risk of acl injuries.
@@paoloh885 yeah no. Literally learn the first basic thing in fucking biology. WE'RE ALL DIFFERENT. And btw, muscle mass is only 1 risk factor. There are many many risk factors and most are related to women not getting the same treatment as men and therefor being more likely to tear an ACL
Terribly upsetting. She won’t be back for the World Cup.
muito triste.
Was war da los bitte
🥺
Miedema 💪🏻 1:22
Omg
Arsenals record is a disgrace with men's and women's ACL ruptures. They need to review their gym sessions and stop doing exercises putting huge shear forces on the ACL, such as jumping lunges and stupid machine leg curl extensions. And check the length of players boot studs so they're not too long. They need to sack some physios and ignorant gym and fitness instructors and get their whole training routine reviewed by a top knee surgeon.
Hoi
🫢🫢🫢🫢🫢😔😔😔
Eres llores may
That's what happens when everything is men made and for men made it's scientifically proven WSL and WChampionsLeague pitches are rubbish or when women teams play on men's pitches (like WChelsea in Old Trafford, etc.) the pitches aren't well treated enough I mean men Chelsea wouldn't play on the same conditions women play because they have no option.
