      I hope it goes easy for her! I recommend vitamin C supplement daily for her. Not drops on the water. Oxbow makes a vitamin C cookie, but Child’s Life oral liquid is the best. She’ll benefit from it now and through a month after the babies are weaned. You need to separate boys out at 3 weeks old- both boys and girls can be fertile at that young age. A vet or rescue can help you gender the babies.

      I’m sorry for your loss. Yes. Piggies under 5 months are high risk pregnancies. There is a formula for the babies. Don’t use kitten replacements or goat milk. The recipe for the formula is:
      1 egg yolk
      Evaporated milk to equal the amount of the egg yolk
      Water to equal the amount of that mixture.
      Mix it very well and serve slightly warmed. Once they get the hang of the syringe, they will usually take it readily because it’s kind nursing to them. They need to eat every 2-3 hours day and night for the first 5-7 days, then reduce to every 3-4 hours for the next 5-7 days. By the start of their 3rd week, they usually only need every 5-7 hours. You can store the formula it in the fridge for 3 days. You have to throw it out on the 4th day and make new. After you feed the formula take a soft cloth and gently wipe their butt to stimulate the excretory process. Feed the formula slowly so as not to aspirate them. They will eat hay and veggies hours after birth, so hay should always be available and veggies twice daily. Keep veggies simple. Lettuce (never iceberg of course), bell pepper; small amounts of carrot, parsley, celery leaf, cilantro are all fine for them. If you don’t have experience hand feeding animals and there is a rescue near you I encourage you to ask the rescue to check them over and help if you need it. You can also email me at therescuegarden@gmail.com for more advice and I’ll help as best I can.

      No hate at all! I appreciate your concern! I run a Guinea pig rescue and have significant experience with pregnancy and birth, including high risk pregnancy for Guinea pigs. Part of being experienced, however, is knowing when they need to go to the vet. Our animals have the best vet care available if I have even the tiniest concern about any issue. This girl was fine, and there was no worry that she would have trouble. Also, she had only just arrived here from the shelter when she and her sister both went into labour. They were only supposed to be here for an hour before the rescue who was ultimately taking them arrived. We were only transport from the shelter because the other rescue was far away, so we were able to save them an hour of time and about 30 miles of travel.

      Hi Heather! Guinea Pigs have between one and five pups. Although I had a rescue that had seven, while her sister had had five the day before. Boy was that a surprise!
      A pregnancy lasts between 59 and 72 days, and a guinea pig can get pregnant within 15 hours of giving birth.
      The babies nurse for three weeks. The boys have to be separated from the girls at that point as a precaution, because it’s biologically possible for them to be fertile at just three weeks old.

    • @therescuegarden38
      @therescuegarden38  Год назад +2

      @@blaurennjay5548 you’re very welcome. The gestation period for Guinea Pigs is between 59 and 72 days. Usually in the sixth or seventh week you will be able to feel the babies moving. You may also see mama’s tummy ripple as the babies move. Once the babies are moving, you can estimate about a week or two until birth. She may start to pace as the babies start moving just before labor. She may also bend down like they do when they clean their underbelly a lot. Some will make a noise like a little “yip” as the labor starts. Labor should start rather quickly, and there is usually 6 to 8 minutes between babies. Once all of the babies are born, the after births will be expelled. They do not need to eat those so it’s OK to scoop them out. The only reason they do eat them is because it is their instinct to have to clean up everything so that predators don’t find them. There is no medical benefit to eating the afterbirth. Newborn guinea pigs weigh 75 g average although the actual weight will depend on how many there are, how big mama is, and nutrition and prenatal care. The babies need to nurse for three weeks. Boys need to be separated from girls between three and four weeks old. Adult males should not be kept with the female as she can get pregnant again within 15 hours after birthing a litter. Good luck with your piggies!

Unfortunately, we get a lot of high-risk pregnancies in rescue that do need to be attended. I've dealt with at least 100 piggie pregnancies and births. It's not a good idea to breed your animals. You can always rescue a baby guinea pig from a shelter or rescue when you are able to afford them. There are a number of issues that can make it dangerous to breed animals when you are not a professional. These piggies came to the shelter pregnant and were taken into rescue. There are already tens of thousands of unwanted animals of all kinds- literally from fish to horses- in shelters and rescues, and who are being killed every day because there aren't enough good homes for them.

      She hast to chew through the umbilical cord, and then get the amniotic sac off of the baby. She will eat the after-birth, because in the wild, they have to clean up all of the mess from a birth so that predators can’t smell and find them. The instinct, even in domestic Guinea Pigs, is still to eat that, but they do not need to eat it in captivity where they are safe.
